    The 2019 Volvo XC40 is out and we got our hands on the T5 AWD R-design variant. Come see what I have to say about the good, the bad, and the ugly of this completely new platform for Volvo. Did Volvo make a seriously strong small SUV competitor or will this one just blend in with the crowd in an already saturated segment?

    One benefit of the plastic is for salt states to prevent lower panel rusting

    The black wheel arches are on the BMW X5, it is also on the Tesla Model X, both really expensive SUVs. Yes, not sure why they do that, but on this XC40, R-Design, the White looks great with that feature.

    After being a passenger in an Xc 40 my big criticism would be!, when the front driver seat is forward for a smaller person you can see all of the seat cable loom which doesn’t make it feel like much thought went in to it. Having said that it performed well with a comfortable ride!

    Can someone please help me.. Am I wrong when I compared the momentum trim with the momentum plus package against the r-design, it comes out to same price but don't you get extra value with the r design?

      Did you pre-order it without seeing it in the flesh? I test drove one a day or two after the local dealer got them, ordered it the next day, and I won't be getting it until mid-July!
      I also ordered an almost fully-loaded (apart from heated seats and steering wheel, which aren't that useful in California) Momentum. We considered the R-Design (which is what I drove), but the nubuck-only seats scared us off. Suade and a 3 year old, and newborn don't mix!

    • @robertenglebright8257
      @robertenglebright8257 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had to wait until the nearest dealer had one in stock before I could test drive it, which took a few weeks. Then I ordered it the following week. This was at the end of March. I've been told it's been built and was even given the VIN.

    • @jeffs6090
      @jeffs6090 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You guys will definitely not be disappointed. It is worth the wait. I actually got rather lucky with mine. I talked with my dealer last October when I first new about the car. He then called me in March when they started to get them in. My then vehicle's lease was due to be up in May. I went to look at them, did not drive one, but really liked how it looked. They only had white and the light blue (Amazon Blue) in at that time - colors I definitely didn't want. Those sold quickly, along with the next few that came in. If ones were not already sold from preorders, they normally sold within a couple of days.
      So, at the end of April, he called again. "I have a loaded black momentum with red seats that just came off the truck today." I said don't call anyone else, I'll be in after work tomorrow. I went in, saw it (still in the wrap from delivery), test drove their demo, bought the black one, picked it up 4 days later (May 2nd) after they cleaned it and got it ready, been loving it ever since!
      I agree with the seats on the R design. I initially wanted an R design because I loved the blacked out grill, the wheels, and other things. But the seats, albeit awesome looking, were turning me off. The suede inserts are hot. I sweat a lot and easily as it is, and those seats definitely do not circulate air well. My dad had a Cayenne GTS with the suede seats, and I rode in that a few times and had swamp ass and back getting out of it each time. He did too and traded it after only having it barely three months. Plus, in your case, it may not be the best for a toddler either.

    Wife is digging the XC40 R-Design. We said the same about those rims a few days ago. Terrible. The price is great for what you can get loaded on the R-Design. Now we just have to see if the smaller size is functional compared to the XC60. Did you sit in the back seat? How did it feel? Does the trunk have enough width for a set of golf clubs? Hope you get one for a week, just pray you don’t get the Momentum😄

    This car will come as full EV this year. None seem to mention that! ^^ Will be their first full EV. And as mentioned below, the plastic is good because it protect the rest of the car. Especially those that live where you get snow and salt on the roads each year like I do and you guys do as well. I also disliked it but if it makes my car last and not rust and maybe ensure I get much better resale value on it because... no rust! thats great! :D All I want now tho is a large family EV that has a reasonable price and 300 - 400 mile range. 40 - 50k price range...

    It's a great price. People are dropping 30K on loaded RAV4 and CRV. I love Volvo but not a fan of the new inline 4 turbo. I usually get a S60 loaner with the new 4 and I don't like how it sounds. Glad I have one of the last inline 6 turbo

    • @Hilariumosis
      @Hilariumosis 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Polestar Wes If you want better sound you have a sea of cars for that. If you want a car made for everything else that makes the engine sound irrelevant then there's a sea of cars there too like Volvo. If you want the best of both worlds then pick one if it's competitors for a more expensive price... Or a Polestar if you still want it to be a Volvo nowdays. Otherwise an older model before the 4-cylinders or tuning/modification is the way to go.
      The bottom line is Volvo is not a performance brand anymore to the same extent like years back with the T5-T6 engines and V70/S60 R. It's a premium brand with focus on the more boring safety & everyday usability. Engaging handling and exhaust sound is not luxury like not an expectation of what's considered luxury. That's sporty.

    • @v60polestar88
      @v60polestar88 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hilariumosis Wrong!! BMW has a 4 cylinder too that sounds like crap too. Mercedes 4 sounds like garage too. Volvo are safe cars but the inline 5/6 sounded awesome with good performance. It's not just Volvo that has gone into boring awful sounding 4 cylinder mode

    • @particleinthewave8378
      @particleinthewave8378 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      OMG not liking a car simply because of exhaust note is about as dumb of a first world problem I have ever heard. Turn up your stereo or something

    • @Hilariumosis
      @Hilariumosis 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Polestar Wes Of course, but your comment was complaining on the current Volvo 4-cylinders. You're right that they're not exciting to drive and listen to. But no one's forcing you to buy a new Volvo and live with that. I added a little to my original comment fyi.

  • @markkibbe1802
    @markkibbe1802 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    An easy way for Volvo to make an XC40R or XC40 Polestar would be to do some suspension work, retune the transmission calibration, and drop in the corporate super/turbo 316hp variant of the 4 banger. That would make this thing from fun to an absolute hoot to drive. Also, it wouldn't be very expensive for them to do, as they have the big things (engine) already, and the tranny tuning for sportier shifting would be mostly, if not all, software. I would love to see an idea like this come to fruition.

  • @klaspeppar5619

    Actually Geely uses the Volvo CMA platform for their lynx SUV, crossover thing.
    But Geely don't sell cars in the US or here in Europe.
    I don't think I like the styling, I don't know why but, it looks like a Toyota to me.
    I prefer the more classy Swedish look of the XC60.
    When it comes to diesels not being able in the US, it could be due to poor fule quality and they would not sell.

    What about the wheel? Doesn't it feel light and unstable? Also, doesn't the start-stop button AND the gear box annoy and confuse you? Plus, the blind spot is far too big...Great-looking and safe Volvo though, with a lot of smart, practical details!! A sort of step or ladder for the older dogs (or, for heavy luggage), would be appreciated by people like myself!!

    • @noxius6165
      @noxius6165 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's more about the person, because I took the XC40 on a test drive multiple times and the steering wheel felt rlly nice and the start stop button wasn't a discomfort at all. Together with the blind spot system the car kinda complements for those big blind spots that it has, but like I said it's more about the person who drives it and how they feel like when driving it

    The catastrophic VW diesel fail nearly broke that company; why another would think to re-enter that arena is unimaginable. The U.S. market is heading solidly towards more electric and hybrid vehicles, like it or not, and diesel will likely stick within the truck and Ut-van world for many years. Turbos that take regular gas are still more viable than everyone else's. Designers for unknown reasons get stuck in the deep ruts made by a few trendsetters, year after year, competing mostly with embellishments and not real creative alternatives. Just one toss-off here: an XC styled Prius wagon, AWD with some clearance. Never, ever gonna happen, even though that is a closer fit to the first gen Subaru GL which made the market for the wave of Subie fans. Why Americans who don't work construction or farm buy big-ass pickups is the biggest unsolved mystery yet.

      Yeah they get everything cheaper than us Brits, and they get paid way more, have bigger houses, and the cost of fuel over there is SO cheap compared to the UK. That's why they will be the very last country to wake up and smell the coffee to what is going on in the world, they are paid well to sleep.
      I think it's an absolute dog though, that rear 3/4 panel looks like a 90s skoda, i really wouldn't want one giving to me, I'd trade it in for anything else at the volvo dealers.

    • @MaximilianvonPinneberg
      @MaximilianvonPinneberg 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends where you live Jezyby47. New York and LA are both more expensive than London for sample. And every car design award this year has gone to this car. I think it looks amazing. The rear swage line is reminiscent or the P1800. Thee are nods to the 480 in the panel lines and the interior has many Jonas Lindval touches, one of the great Swedish furniture designers of the 1960s. I'm not sure which Skoda you've been looking at though. It is such a clever design.

    • @jezzyby47
      @jezzyby47 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are seeing the p1800 anywhere in that design, you'd better get your eyes checked ace. The S line/drive BMW Z4 in white is a homage to the p1800 imo.
