“why didn’t they just leave?” So a psychologist by the name Dr. Stuart Hart did an examination on both Erik and Lyle and he said that Lyle had the mental capacity of a 10 year old for his age of 21 and Erik had the mental capacity of a 8 year old at the age of 18. Jose and Kitty had made them SO dependent on them through their entire lives because their parents directed and dictated their entire lives for YEARS. And Jose told Lyle from the age of 5 that you can never trust anyone and he kept doing that until he was an adult. So the psychologist said it was impossible for them to leave because of this. Their whole story is just heartbreaking..their parents failed them, relatives, the goddamn system, literally everyone failed them.

THAT IS SO FREAKING SADDDDD! I can totally understand all of this. Living in those times I bet was awful as well just not having the openness to say anything.

Exactly. and why so many women stay in abusive marriages for years? Actually Lyle was left to Prisnston he was there for summer holidays and Eric wanted to leave for college but his dad told him no. So that was his last chance to say to Lyle what was happening and ask for help.

Do you really think José couldn't find them? He simply banned Erik from going to a far away college just to continue torturing him. And please, let's consider for a few seconds what the mental health of these boys was like? I hope that after this show you guys will be interested in watching the Netflix documentary.

I mean they were older but this was all they knew, i mean they were raised to think this was normal and then to just submit and accept. a child who is abuse their whole life their abusers become this big monster they can't get away from, Lyle and Erik never made a decision without Jose's agreeing with it. Erik and Lyle where both emotionally and mentally stunted, a child who is abuse can have a slower mental development. Lyle wet the bed at 14 years old and still had stuffed animals at 16 years old and Erik never had a girlfriend, and Kitty made him get one around 16 because it could look like he was gay,he never had one because he felt like a girl could tell about his sexual abuse and he never told Jose No, until he was 17 and Jose took a hunting knife and put it to his neck and said something like you never tell me no or I'll kill you. Jose sexually abuse Erik his whole life, i mean that a different kind of trauma, the boys describe Jose like a Greek or Roman god, not like a dad, and normally you wouldn't stand against someone you saw as a god, who told you your whole life they can kill you.

56:34 Regarding the "Why didn't they just leave" part, you have to remember that Erik had it drilled into his mind since the age of 6 that this was his entire life. Now obviously you guys haven't seen the whole show or other documentaries as far as I'm aware so you won't know all the details. So this comment isn't an attack on you, it's just my opinion!
Erik and Lyle had been completely brainwashed since they were kids. Once when Erik was 17 he tried to stop the abuse and said "No" to his father. In response, Jose held a huge knife to Erik's throat, threatened him, and said "I should kill you. Next time I will." Jose then forced Erik to watch himself in the mirror as he was being abused. Link to Erik's real testimony (it's obviously very graphic): th-cam.com/video/pZ-VjaYxdy4/w-d-xo.html
A huge, huge amount of abuse victims have the 'power' to leave but simply do not leave. It's a very complex scenario and I believe it's mentioned in some of the Special Expert testimony during the real Menendez brothers trial (which is entirely on the Court TV website for free, a few vids are also on youtube.) If you ever have time, you should watch Dr. Ann Burgess' testimony, she's an expert psychologist who worked for the FBI. She believes, even to this day, that Erik and Lyle were abused.
In fact, most abuse victims are actually killed while in the process of leaving. Think of OJ Simpson.
Erik also tried to run away at 12 and his father found him and brought him back. I can't remember exactly what happened but his father most likely threatened him into never doing it again. Erik's entire life was abuse and pain, and simply leaving or putting a stop to the abuse just wasn't a possibility. It did not exist in his world.
Sorry for the long rant. I really like your reactions by the way. I'm sure you already know but Episode 5 will be really tough. It's a gruesome episode but it's also my favourite because of how well the actors did.

In the mind of a victim, fearing for their life every moment, living in hell, there is no “just leave”. You genuinely believe there is no possible escape. Your abuser is just too powerful. The world itself isn’t a safe place when they are in it.

No but Eugene weens who served time with Lyle did say he was disrespectful and thought he was better than everyone else, I've also read he could be sassy and manipulative. I also watched the documentary and people in that said he took after his dad and was aggressive and domineering. No one knows what he was like unless they knew him personally.
