  • Learn to kick fast and hard like Buakaw! Check out more at our instructional martial arts platform www.fightcoach.tv . The roundhouse kick is the powerful “meat and potatoes” kick of muay thai. Fighters who have mastered their roundhouse kick can kick with the force equivalent to being hit by a baseball bat. The roundhouse kick can be targeted low, medium or high. Continuous leg kicks to the opponent’s thighs cause damage, slowing down the mobility of the opponent, sometimes even prematurely ending the fight. High kicks can result in knockouts, while repetitive mid-level kicks can take the breath and energy out of an opponent.
    The power in the kick comes from the explosive rotation of the hips and foot. The kick side arm should swing down for additional power, but the shoulder should be kept elevated to protect against counter-attacks. When throwing a roundhouse kick, the fighter must imagine “kicking through” the opponent. This will give the kick additional power. Contact is made preferably with the shin bone.

    i was practicing these and experiencing pain in my left leg that I couldn't explain. Before I had no problems with that but then I examined this video and how I was kicking, and I realized that I wasn't fully springing up onto the ball of my left foot when launching my right kick. I was keeping my left foot flat on the ground which I guess put lots of pressure on my heel, and then pain would shoot up my calf and tendons. So make sure guys you spring up onto the ball of your left foot when kicking!!! If you experience that kind of pain for too long it will disable you!

      Thanks for the comment Alma! Correct technique is not just about the most efficient way of movement for power and speed, it's also about preventing injuries.

      @almasakic1148 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your reply! I have one more question; it seems the pain in my knee has subsided and now I am experiencing pain in my toes, more specifically the bones of my feet. I have skinny toes/bones to begin with and this pain has really been affecting my ability to pivot during my kicks lately, resulting in weak kicks. How should I deal with this kind of pain in the feet? I am not sure whether to just accept it and push through it, or if there is a smarter way to deal with it?

    • @samm1809
      @samm1809 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +Alma Sounds to me like your problems could be more to do with muscle knots/fascia knots. Can you do a full resting squat? Bridge? Side plank? Rotate your ankle for a while without it becoming sore and stiff? There could be a knot anywhere in your body that is causing all of this foot pain, or there could be knots all over, even in your pecs or glutes or lats. I've been doing thinks like compound exercises, stretching, and massaging myself all over for months, just constantly finding more knots and getting them out, and it's putting my movement on a whole new level. It also is giving me a lot of familiarity with my body, and how everything is insanely connected. I've gotten knots out of my forehead that have caused cracking sounds in my pinky toe, and improved my balance. No bullshit.

    • @almasakic1148
      @almasakic1148 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      thank you so much for your reply!! This is really helpful to me. I too have noticed that the various pains seem to travel from body part to body part; almost as if, if I work out one area of my body the pains soon travel over to another area, and then I have to work on that etc. Sometimes I feel as if there is no end to the obstacles I run into. But I've been doing consistent exercises for about a month now. I think basically I just need to keep it up. I only started Muay Thai about a month ago and I have heard that of all the martial arts it is the hardest on the body. I think if I keep it up and do the massaging, stretching, etc like you do, maybe in a few months time I will have better balance and relieve those knots as well!

    • @samm1809
      @samm1809 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, if you've only just started exercising again, then that's a good sign that it would be disuse-related knots, like me. I only got off my ass 4 months ago as well, and low and behold, it was full of knots. They caused everything for me. Weakness, loss of balance, zero flexibility... just a generally dysfunctional body. I've made massive progress with it, though. The main thing, apart from paying attention to every muscle in the body (both in terms of touching them physically and cultivating neurological awareness of them), is to keep moving in a variety of ways. Mix up the way you move, and make sure every muscle somehow fulfils it's purpose at least once in a while. Don't neglect stuff like under the arms and below the abs. They are the worst areas for me. Oh, and also, stretch, stretch, stretch.

    i like the way his right hand comes back as the right leg kicks. conservation of angular momentum about the pivot leg to allow for a more powerful right kick. i doubt he calculated the physics of it so it's just intuitive or traditional technique based on experience. clever.

    Huge difference between a Muay Thai roundhouse kick vs other styles. Muay Thai puts the entire body into it while rotating the hips which generates phenomenal power. Other styles just like to flick kick from the knee and tap the opponent.

    • @aurelianspodarec2629
      @aurelianspodarec2629 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Tap? Not sure if putting the whole weight + a thrust is bad. People broke like that many legs.
      UFC CHampion uses that kick, not the Muai Thai, but the Kyokushin Karate.
      Why do you talk bad about other kicks?
      Muai Thai kicks are great for ehad kicks as it doesn't take much force to KO someone, and they are faster than any other kicks, however, that is a tap on the body.
      But then again, doesn't matter that much.
      It depends if it does the job or not :)

    • @honigdachs.
      @honigdachs. 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's not correct. Only sports/point fighting focused styles flick the kick from the knee, for obvious reasons. In any style that teaches a "proper", powerful kick, hip rotation and body momentum are utilized, just like with punches.

    • @aurelianspodarec2629
      @aurelianspodarec2629 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're talking to me?
      This is the proper roundhouse kick, full breaking leg kick.
      Not a snap kick like in these videos.
      However these kicks here are faster, and you don't need much force to KO someone, so for head kick Muai Thai kick is better, but not for the body or leg kick - although it depends on the situation.
      If you are kicking behind leg, then Muai Thai kick will be better, but face to face a proper roundhouse kick is required, otherwise it's just going to be a snap.
      Check the proper roundhouse kick here: th-cam.com/video/pasZfyn2NAE/w-d-xo.htmlm18s

      Karate kicks are hard asf bro tae kwon do also they all “tap” but can still knock you out. Sometimes it’s not always about power thy cause a knock out, it’s the strikes that you don’t see coming that kill also. “Tap” kicks are fast as hell and if placed in the right spot will turn your lights off real quick. Don’t underestimate

      TKD style kicks are the ones that use the extending of the knee/leg to gain some power. Funnily enough TKD kicks are usually weaker power wise but a lot faster and with less telegraphing. Both MT and TKD kicks can be useful in different scenarios so if you’re interested definitely check out the TKD round kick!
