    In this factory tour, we're looking at a painting factory in northern Taiwan, used by some computer hardware manufacturers (Lian Li and Digital Storm included) for high-end paint jobs. Painting is the second-most expensive method of coating computer hardware in Taiwan, led only by anodization and followed by electroplating and electrodeposition. We'll learn more about those in upcoming tours on the channel, so be sure to subscribe for that and check our factory tour playlist. For this one, we look at some semi autonomous methods of painting PC hardware, including robotic arms that are pre-programmed to paint specific products. A lot of processes in painting are still human, but these factories are moving increasingly toward automation.

    FYI: We completed nearly all factory tours without issue. We left one day early due to US airlines shutting down service to Taiwan (pending borders closing and international travel bans). We are home and finalizing our content from the trip. The planes and airports were ghost towns on the way home, so we are not concerned about exposure.

    The 8H hardness is probably on the graphite grading scale for pencils. While not very hard, most ceramic coatings offered for automotive use to improve scratch resistance claim to achieve 9H hardness. So I guess 8H is pretty good in terms of paint hardness.

    • @Bfiftytwo
      @Bfiftytwo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It does sound correct but also strangely it might be based on Mohs Scale and the Rockwell Scale. It's probably a simplified and butchered way to tell the hardness of rubbing against different materials.

    • @Piupiumacher
      @Piupiumacher 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    • @stoneymahoney9106
      @stoneymahoney9106 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The challenges with white paint are two-fold. The first problem is production - maintaining colour tolerances on something that effectively has no pigmentation is extremely hard as you have far fewer ways to correct for variations from the target colour during production, meaning your weighing/measuring and mixing processes have to remain super-accurately calibrated batch to batch. The second problem is application - while lighter colours are often used to hide blemishes on materials, pure-white paint (especially gloss) does exactly the opposite and picks out any roughness, moulding lines or other imperfections that disturb the uniformity of the light scattering off the surface. When applied to materials like plastics with a certain amount of variation in the way the surface texture turns out between batches of the base material, it becomes nigh-on impossible to get a white coating match between plastics and metals without extreme attention to detail at every step of the production process.

    The hardness rating of paint is the hardest pencil lead that doesn't cut through the coating. Typically these tests are done with H to 9H leads but can use others like F or B leads. The test is performed by first flattening the tip of the lead with fine grit sandpaper till it's completely flat across the entire diameter of the shaft of the lead. This will make a sharp 90°edge between the flat tip and the side of the shaft. The shape edge is placed on the surface of the paint so that the lead is at a 45° angle from the painted surface. Then you must push forward a least 1/4" with as mush downforce as you can without breaking the lead. You will repeat this process with different hardness of leads until you find the hardest one that doesn't go through the paint.

    You may not believe this but here goes: I working in a shop with painting rooms/booths where we had a particular problem from a maintenance perspective. Management wanted the booth airflow to vary based upon whether the entrance doors were open or closed. The reason given was that dust could enter the booth with the doors open thus ruining the paint jobs. Also, with the exhaust pulling air into the booth, the doors would slam shut upon closing, knocking dust from the ceiling and door frames. Well, this was an easy fix... magnetic proximity switches were installed to kill the exhaust fans if the doors were opened. The fans were powered through VFD drives so we also ramped the fans up slowly so as to not disturb the environment. Well, after constant complaining about the lighting and air and, and, and we discovered that in between paint runs the booth was used as a sanding booth, creating all the dust that were the basis of the complaints. My point is that after you went thru the dust blowing at the entrance, put on the booties, blew off and wiped any dust from the product to be painted ...well, would you paint them in a sanding booth?

    3:48 They most likely spray adhesion promoter to plastics. Adhesion promoter is more efficient than abrading the surface prior to applying the first paint coat. Oil contamination is a huge issue. So large an issue that they have communication channels with the plastic manufacture to ensure that something as simple as release agents are not changed before validating the effect.

    Back in the late 90s to early 2000s companies like Falcon Northwest and Voodoo (prior to the HP buyout) painted their cases with automotive paint used on high end to exotic cars and they did an amazing job with it. They also went as far as to fold the IDE cables in a way akin to origami. Such detail is lost on most of today's builds, even outside of the PC space.

    the hardness that they mentioned may be HRC (rockwell C scale) its used in giving metal a hardness scale almost always. specifically its the gold standard for knife hardness measuring high end knifes are around 60-67 HCR so around 1-8 HCR for paint sounds right

    • @bengrogan9710
      @bengrogan9710 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unlikely HRC, the C is related to a conical tool indent test and is usually related to metals rather than paint - this is likely related to graphite blunting tests

    Question: What type of paint were they utilizing? Water based, or petroleum based like enamel, lacquer, urethane? In developed countries the push is for water based to reduce VOC's (volatile organic compounds). It is more than just changing the paint though as each paint technology requires a different drying technique. Water based for example needs lots of air flow to dry properly. Petroleum responds well to IR heat that penetrates the substrate and dries the coating from the bottom first.

    hmm interesting the robotarm looks like an arm for welding and not for painting (this energy
    supply for the EOT through the arm itself is pretty common on welders)
    paintrobots typicaly have a different design for the hand to help with straight line movements
    also i have never seen a paintrobot without a protectiv cover over it, but thats mayby due to LVLP
    instead HVLP and the need for very strong ventelation with a worker in the same cell
    thats another point, here in germany if such a set up is checked you can close the factorie till its
    fixed
    you have a worker in the same cell as this non collaborative robot and workareas overlap without
    an obvious way to prevent the robot hitting the worker
    no hardstop for the arm in place and no light curtains for an approved software solution
    even the gantry style robots wouldnt be approved and i can tell you the gantry style might hurt,
    but the 6-axis arm would simply not care if it hits you

    Was a surprise for me see that air conditioning cover (the Hitachi transparent cover) why don't use a plastic white mold?

    • @blahorgaslisk7763
      @blahorgaslisk7763 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My guess would be that it's to ensure color matching. It's actually hard to match the exact shade of white if some parts are white plastic and others are painted metal. Even different plastic materials can be hard to match. Painting them all is much simpler.

    If it truly is a solvent-based paint like you mentioned, I'm surprised they can get away with not using a hazardous location robot. That particular robot is not certified for class 1 division 1 environments. Then again I'm sure they have different rules in different countries. But that would never pass muster in the US.

      Wait, why would that robot not be classified got hazardous locations? Is the solvent a danger to the outside material? I'm a programmer and I just found out that this is a thing.

      @@theblackhundreds7124 Purely guessing, but many solvent vapours are highly flammable, so machinery operating in such conditions might require certain safety specifications.

      @@theblackhundreds7124 I have no experience with robots, but the first thing that comes to my mind would be flammable solvent fumes. Those can be ignited by electronics that are not properly sealed, hammers that draw a spark when hammering due to their material etc.
      At my workplace every device (mobile phones, walky talkys, flashlights, hammers...) we use in areas with the potential to develop flammable or explosive fume/air mixtures has to be rated for that. I think Eric recognized the robot and knows its not typically rated for that.

    What i learned today: There is not only type of gallon, there are US and Imperial gallons. The world would be a better place if everyone started using SI.

    • @guspaz
      @guspaz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This can cause confusion in Canada, because Canada used (and still does unofficially to some extent) Imperial measurements, which are not always quite the same as US measurements. Further complicating matters, in Canada, we often call the American measurement system "Imperial", even though it's not.
      Luckily, the difference only applies to volume, which is more commonly metric. Imperial weights and distances (which are still common in English-speaking Canada) are the same as US measurements. But fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts, and gallons are all different. And not a little different, one imperial gallon is 1.2 American gallons.
