ABB's IRB 5500 model with IRC5P controller and CBS II cartridge bell system. A fill station with a separate gripper robot exchanges paint cartridges filled from the color tree in the process cabinet, completely externalized from the paint robot arm.
Yes, it's possible and is regularly done. The most common "two color" jobs are tricoat whites, where the first pair of robots sprays a straight shade white basecoat, then the second pair sprays a pearlescent mica coat on top of it at the same time. Several other "premium" colours are done this way at various manufacturers but it varies while tricoat white is near universal. Two-toning (different coloured roof from body colour) is fairly common nowadays too, but most manufacturers do not spray both the two tone roof and the base body simultaneously. They usually spray one of the two first, mask that section off, and paint the car a second time for the two tone portion.
Paint spray heads are rotating at 40,000 RPM driven by air line inside the robots arm. When done between flash, the robot places the spray head in a cleaner, while air spray focus onto the important parts that can build up the paint or clear. Agitation helps between a short down time with solvents being drawn off, into a large hose around the cleaner pot, causing it to dry in 3-4 seconds, before spraying again. A change in color is very interesting as well as it runs solvent into the clearer pot. This is similar to having 10 guys painting one square or rectangular of the vehicle, at the same time! Very interesting! I wonder what they use for anti-corrosion e-coat during the drip as the still rust out and never saw and seam sealer applied, did you? Either spot welding or panels welded by a tech, does this inside get coated with a waxy coating designed to prevent rusting! I have an advantage as I purchased the dealers set/kit after they switched away from selling a protection package! I am restoring a 67 C10 and don’t like weld-thru rust spray. Equipped with 5 different tips & 5 quartz of product, I still purchased as case of 12 qts. and will use it wisely! Thanks kindly to all who commented. (Note; dielectric grease and internal frame coatings from doors, rocker panels, rear quarter legs, trunk extensions all need attention with this product. Dielectric silicone grease is mentioned in the owners manual to re-hydrate rubber door seals to last but also keep doors from freezing shut if in an area the gets below 32 degrees. Permatex dielectric grease is sold in home improvement stores.. cheaper than part store. When placed into connectors, bulbs, tool box flashlights keep moisture from causing corrosion. It well cheaper at $6, than a $28 lamp socket. ASE Master tech since 78.
Atomizer bell speed depends on how finely the paint needs to be separated. This is based on color primarily and can vary anywhere from 30 kRPM to 60 kRPM.
There is. Post application the vehicle runs through both automated and manual inspection, during the latter of which imperfections are wet sanded and buffed with a buffing compound. Anything to minimise repaints.
Two toning is usually done by spraying the body the basic colour, curing, then masking the dry painted body off with masking tape and cover wrap, then spraying the unmasked roof through the booth a second time with black (or other two tone roof colour such as white as Toyota does). Some automakers do it the other way round, spraying the roof first, then masking off the roof and spraying the body colour, but it's not as common. If you mean the black B-pillar and C-pillar "floating roof" effect that is popular now, that is achieved using black-out tape or black plastic snap-in trim piece.

I still don't understand how the don't get runs in the E-coat after it's submerged. I'm a painter and this has never ever sat well with me I'm baffled. Explain to me that it's electrical electorally charged and it still doesn't make sense, some of that coating is visibly running off the of the car. There should be runs everywhere
I was wondering the same thing. The only thing I could think of is that it's very low viscosity so it runs off and sheets in a thin layer then cures quick. I'd love to know the details.
After the electrolytic bath, the part is sent for rinsing. As a result of this process, soil particles that are not fixed on the metal surface are washed off. The rinsing can be done either by immersion or by passing the part through a spray tunnel. Then drying from 160 to 180 degrees Celsius for about 40 minutes

Those spray nozzles are amazing.
Is there sanding process on factory car ? Or they never sanding after coating.

Does anyone know how they do the black roofs on SUVS from factory?

Prob something do clean the metal
Doing primer on the metal components for the corrosion resistance, from the tank solution colour it seems to be phosphating process.
