Warm tea and honey. You have to prep your voice for this, most metal vocalists take hours to prepare for their shows and practice. Don't drink milk or soda as it can ruin your voice.
So I scream everyday and I can go on and on and on for maybe ~2 hours (3 hours on a good day). Not to be another comment asking for tutorials, but maybe someone in the comments can help me out. I'm capable of singing and want to condition myself to expand more on technique. However, when I sing, I can feel my diaphragm begin to spaz out after about 20-30 minutes and it starts to create some sort of hoarseness (but not the kind that hurts). Basically I could try and go for an extended note that's not out of my range but sits on the higher side for what's comfortable and upon projection it will just give out. Now, here's what I know. 1) Improper diaphragm control. Obviously both style of vocals utilizes it but singing is much more softer and needs to be controlled like a feather slowly falling to the ground. Screaming, well its like slamming into a barricade (the barricade being the barrier that protects you from damaging your voice). 2) Improper Breath control/lack of endurance. This is where I THINK my problems lie. Breathing sounds like something we don't have to think about but it's actually harder to maintain consistently where it keeps your diaphragm and your vocal chords at equilibrium when changing back and forth from screaming to singing. Maybe someone can share with me a little more detail about building that endurance and what you're looking for when controlling the diaphragm when it comes to singing and maintaining that composure. A band I used to be in when I got out of high school beyond-aphelion.bandcamp.com/ was kind of prog-metal-ish?.... the song structures didn't have structure and I would try to incorporate some metalcore/post-hardcore elements to what was basically a mess of instruments over one another (and no I did not like it lol). But the songs on there always managed to make my diaphragm give out even though I was comfortable in that range (only when practicing as a band and yes.... even live...it was embarrassing, don't wanna talk about it lol. lets just say I'd end up having to scream over some parts that were supposed to be singing to cover it up... and yes it tend to work.. especially metalcore shows where other bands didn't have any singing). Anyway, haven't played in a band in 3-4 years and notice I still have this problem despite trying to approach it differently everyday. Any thoughts?
Do your tutorials live on Twitch then re-upload them to TH-cam, it makes it easier, you can answer questions, and you can do these lesson videos more regularly.
So idk if I even do it right, but I've been working on screaming over the past few months. When I first started, even the shortest and moderately loud scream sent me into a long, unwanted coughing fit. Now I hit parts of In this moment, and parkway drive, and even can do whole songs by bands like Mushroom head and thrice. That being said, I see these videos and always feel like I'm doing something wrong lol.
God it's addictive practicing the technique once you get somewhere, I'm really trying to balance not destroying my vocal chords but I keep trying it becasue the sensation is so new/interesting..I think the key is to remember the diaphragm and not tense your shoulders/neck etc when doing it.
I knew it... I'm a baritone and found that I am much more likely to get intensity in rasp when push into my natural range, which being lower, tends to manifest itself in sounds like you would hear from Jaz Coleman or Randy Blythe... the Caveman Roar, as I call it... once I figured that out it basically was the real start of me singing in my own voice
It is very strictly recommend to hold a balance between pressure and voice while doing false cords, because you probably (and many times probably) will get yourself to just very crackeling voice instead of false cords
Dude ngl this video helped me out so much I can’t do fry screama but I was always doing inhales and everyone said there bad so I wanted to learn something better that’s more healthy to do thanks man

Another piece of advice: do not drink cold water when screaming, room temperature or warm water is best
i was so hype when i recognized all of the songs in the intro
God it's addictive practicing the technique once you get somewhere, I'm really trying to balance not destroying my vocal chords but I keep trying it becasue the sensation is so new/interesting..I think the key is to remember the diaphragm and not tense your shoulders/neck etc when doing it.
Exceptionally distilled guide and loved the no nonsense delivery. Bravo! And love your vocals. Talent and hard work by the bucket load 👍🏽🙏🏾
Toilet bowl screen one of the urinals at my workplace sounded exactly lime it
Thanks Andy, your last video was absolutely key in me finding my scream voice, I'm excited to start practicing this one.
I knew it... I'm a baritone and found that I am much more likely to get intensity in rasp when push into my natural range, which being lower, tends to manifest itself in sounds like you would hear from Jaz Coleman or Randy Blythe... the Caveman Roar, as I call it... once I figured that out it basically was the real start of me singing in my own voice
your first video helped so much with my fry screams! would love to see more man
It is very strictly recommend to hold a balance between pressure and voice while doing false cords, because you probably (and many times probably) will get yourself to just very crackeling voice instead of false cords
Thanks Andy!!! Fan from Philippines!
Hoy what’s up my fellow pinoy
Seriously underrated vocalist
Dude ngl this video helped me out so much I can’t do fry screama but I was always doing inhales and everyone said there bad so I wanted to learn something better that’s more healthy to do thanks man
Goddamn I've been waiting for this and you delivered. Great video, Andy! :D I'm not quite there yet with vocal fry, here's hoping *I* manage to get it down before you post another tutorial xD
Can't wait for the next tutorial this year
Thank you Andy, I really enjoy these types of videos! Keep it up!
You're amazing and I seriously appreciate how hard you work and STILL put videos like this out for us, now I need to go practice!!!
Andy I can feel your uncomfiness through the screen 😂
How to metal scream?
Andy: just do it
This is a good one , i could only start doing fry after i watched your previous video so I guess false chord is coming soon lol
Damn.... that was SICK af 💪😎
But I think there is one mistake, if the screaming starts to hurt then you do something wrong, because I heard from a lot of vocalists that screaming shoul never ever hurt!
Dude, I was able to apply it almost as soon as I watched this! I was so scared of damaging my vocal muscles but I’m barely in any pain, I’m still going to get lessons for it but your techniques are so easy to understand! Looks like I’ll be covering some lamb of god eventually 🤘🏼🤘🏼
a year later and i still sound like a grizzly bear having sex
6 years later and i sound like winnie the pooh
Duude where have you been. Im ready for some more coverssss (:
This guy is just grunting in disgust at step 3 and it still sounds amazing lmao
I find doing a bit of throat singing is a really good warm-up as well
Dude we appreciate you so much
excellent, amazing help. the inspiration is strong homie.
Hey, Andy! Please, make more punk goes pop video, like Rockstar cover! I love it! Your scream voice is amazing, so i wanna hear in pop song remakes.
Andy thank you so much for this!
One of the best channels ❤
After watching both how to scream videos, I realized I was mixing both vocal fry AND false chord and thats why my scream sounded so weird 🤣🤣🤣
Omfg those screams sound so good. Just had an ergasm
You are the best. Eternally grateful
I clicked in just because I wanna hear the powerful demonstration
Love this! Been loving the streams my guy! (When I can watch em) ❤️ keep pushing brother
Yessss i waited for so looong
I’ve been waiting for so long
Me trying that hhhhhh from my diaphragm: *lightheaded in 20 seconds*
I can do false chords but sometimes I tend to push to hard. When I do fry screams it feels much familiar because I learned fry screaming first, so I learned false chord very quick but I really have to take care not to push harder than I should.
Awesome to see you again
fry scream tutorial helped so much, can't wait to try this out! you're a fuckin beast bro
I wait you until you upload another video to learn how to scream and thank you for your teaching, its very helpful and i learned it now thanks lodi
Hey so female vocalist here. I have looked up every tutorial on the planet and I’m trying to follow every step that everyone says but I’m still having immense trouble doing a false chord properly without exhausting my voice and getting hoarse. And everyone says I’m doing it wrong if I’m getting that way but I am trying so hard to follow each step. What do you think?
I just sound like patrick screaming...
I wanna say Andy, 5 years ago when i started singing im glad i found you cause i wouldnt be where i am now without watching you grow aswell! cheers for all the vids!
That "lets go" was awesome.
I think I first started learning how to scream using this technique; it’s just that I’ve always had a hard time holding it longer than 5 seconds :/. I can hold mid and high fries quite easily though although I can’t really do fry lows.
