Separate from my previous comment about the CFexpress card and reader, I very much appreciate your review of the C300 Mark III. It helped confirm in my mind that I want the C300 Mark III instead of the C500 Mark II. Additionally, I always appreciate your reviews. They are clear, concise and easy to understand. You are a straight shooter without being mean or rude, which is the way everyone should be when doing reviews. I also like your reviews that get really deep into the technical stuff. Keep up the great work.

Nice coverage - thanks Gerald! This is tempting. I find myself using my C200 more and more over the P6K because is is just a simpler setup - no need for a follow focus or a big cine battery plate hanging off the back. So now the C300mkIII is tempting as a new A cam.

Great review! As an owner of a C500 Mark II, I agree that this camera should be up there. The 120fps w/ AF alone is worth it. However, the fullframe look is definitely hard to beat.

I've been watching your reviews for a while and I've always appreciated your thoroughness and professionalism, but I wish you'd include more test footage (and I don't mean color charts and objects), because technical specs and functionality matter a lot, but at the end of the day we need to gauge the image quality of a camera (at least it's important for me), as I can handle any quirks if the camera produces a good image

I recently wrap a shoot using this camera (provided by canon), I would say this camera is the few camera I feel that I don't need overexposed and I can live with normal exposure and even underexposed little bit. the grain structure is much improved compare to c300 2 and c500 2 (both shows very similar fixed pattern grain).

    7:20 - To correct you :
You may notice that your signal on your waveform can go beyond 100, or below 0 (there is some room above and below).
So, the thing is that the wafeform is using an IRE scaling ( -6% to 109% IRE, where 0% to 100% IRE correspond to limited range) while the zebra is using full scale signal (0 to 1023 in 10 bits)
That means that 0% on the waveform corresponds to 0% IRE = 64 (on a 10 bits scale)
And 100% on the waveform corresponds to 100% IRE = 940 (10 bits)
    (And just to be clear : -6% IRE = 0, and 109% = 1023)
With a quick formula, you find that 92% IRE is equal to roughly 872 in term of 10 bits value
While 86% (full scale) is equal to ~880
The small gap between the 2 value comes from your percentage reading on the waveform !

Nore than ever it's a minefield for us punters and the clarity and depth of your reviews is very helpful. Dual gain sensor is really clever and the future I think - an APC sized sensor trashing a full frame, about time. No comment about heat or duration, this must be a proper video camera!

My C200 is only ever user in my studio and for client interviews in a controlled environment.
The controlled lighting means that's more than I need.
Whenever I'm out in the wild, I prefer something more portable that can be used more easily hand held or on a gimbal.
I love Canon cinema cameras, and this looks like a great option, but I'd probably still use my GH5 more.

One thing that most people don't consider when they like or dislike any camera is "shoot day anxiety". We all have it and the biggest consideration of buying a $ 15K camera that nobody really talks about is the having most of the controls on the outside of the camera in the form of those dials and buttons makes you less anxious and more inclined to change settings. There are so many things to keep track of when shooting that those buttons are great compared to searching though menus and potentially messing something up when $$ and your rep' is on the line. A BMPCC4k with a a button setup like the Canon C serious would be amazing, or maybe a special breakout box that you attach to the usb type-C...., wait! that was my idea lol!!!!

Hey Gerald, I think I'd agree with you on the C300 Mk III being my favorite cinema camera at the moment. However, with the C200 now only costing $5,500, and as someone who shoots mostly event coverage, indie narratives, and occasional commercials but never for professional broadcast companies as of yet, I'm having trouble deciding if it's actually worth spending exactly twice as much just for the addition of the 10-bit AVC codec. I've seen two schools of thought which state either that 10-bit is only necessary for professional broadcast and all web stuff or projects for individual clients should be done with 8-bit, or that 8-bit is worthless and everyone needs to start shooting 10-bit at minimum for everything. Do you have any thoughts on this? I don't necessarily have a budget as much as I'm wanting whatever is going to be the best value and investment (and by investment I don't mean retain monetary value as much as serving me best for the longest amount of time without needing to upgrade).

Gerald, I have to challenge you on your dynamic range opinions. I've had a comparison between the Blackmagic Pocket 6k vs Arri Alexa, and the Pocket 6k won by a mile. At least 2 more stops in highlight latitude. If you're not getting the same results, then you're settings must be wrong. I'd be willing to test this any time if you doubt it

Thank you for the full and comprehensive review of the camera! What is your favorite consumer camera under $5k I've been considering an external recorder.

As far as I understand I don't really need CF express cards, so long as I already have SD cards (e.g. SanDisk Extreme Pro 300 MB/s) - is this correct? also the new c500 only has the SD card slot for "proxies" whatever that's supposed to mean; am I missing something here? thanks

The SD card slots on these cameras are for utility purposes. Loading LUTs, saving settings, and yes, writing smaller proxy files for easier editing. To record the proper footage you need CFExpress cards.

@@geraldundone Thank you for demystifying this! as you say in the video, the C300 is a better choice regardless; I was just hoping to cover my useless purchase of the Sandisk Extreme PRO SD @300 MB/s as I misread Mbs for MBs in the data rates for the Canon EOS R :)

Which Stabilisation method do you prefer when comparing the eis of the C300 iii to the gyro stabilization of the fx9? Thanks for the great vid!

Your the best at what you do from what I've seen. Thank You!
I'm not even in the market for a camera this expensive, but I watched it all anyways. I have a fun idea for you that I'd love to see. Film a video on the original bmpcc and don't tell anyone until the end and see if anyone could tell the difference.
I admit to my bias as I'm kitting up my OG BMPCC now to do some video content. I don't believe anyone would notice the difference between really high quality 1080p and really high quality 4k without pixel peeping.
Either way, have an awesome day

I guess I mean film the A cam talking head stuff with it because you usually use a pocket 6k or 4k if I'm not mistaken.

Hi there! Awesome review, such great technical info as always!!! A couple questions about when you say, "shooting with the default CLog2 profile, you can use Canon's official LUT, you can convert to 709 and get terrific color and tonality in just one step" and "there's no benefit to overexposing on this camera...likely because of the Dual Gain Output...I prefer this method...it means a 709 LUT will always be spot on." First question - with CLog2, are considering 18% grey at Canon's recommended 39.8% IRE for CLog 2 to be "correct" exposure to make the LUT be "spot on?" And second question: do you think that this is also true for shooting at high frame rates (like 120) without the DGO, or would you advocate overexposing HFR video by one stop with this camera? THANKS!!!

I want to see Gerald and Phillip Bloom fight it out in the Octagon! Pretty tough choice between this and the FX-9. Not that I'm complaining! So glad to be living in a time where both of those cameras exist. (Maybe the only good think about 2020? :/ ) I think a huge consideration to make is ergonomics. Do you like the handheld approach or the shoulder/ENG handling? I think a lot of operators prefer the ENG ergonomics that the FX9 affords you. Am I wrong? Great review as always, Gerald!
