Heirloom items like China, crystal, and Silver sets are no longer allowed in our house.
We also don't have clocks unless it's on an appliance or our phones.
      We don't have TV/cable.
I got rid of something like... 80 kitchen items at the beginning of the year, and I am doing another purge after xmas.
Also got rid of over 500ish clothing items this year out of my own closet 🥳 and am down to about 10 outfits total for all seasons. My spouse now has way more clothes than I do and he gets ribbed for it often!
The thing I am most proud of right now is my jewelry purge. I'm not 100% finished but it was the most emotional since a majority of my jewelry came from relatives who have passed on. The guilt of going through and getting rid of some of those pieces was pretty hard, but the relief once they were gone made it worth it.
And everything that we got rid of was either donated or given away for free. Selling and haggling with people is just too stressful for me to deal with unless it involves a car or something of comparable value.

Please reconsider adding the sunglasses back into your life. They are not just for comfort but help keep ultraviolet from damaging the lens inside the eye. Ultraviolet light has been implicated in the formation of cataracts and other eye damage.

@@AtoZenLife Im not an expert. But I think that sun rays can come from the ground, they reflect back. So a hat will protect from sun rays above but not what you get below. Also you need sunglasses year round so not sure if you wear a hat in winter. Sun protection becomes more important as climate changes unfortunately .

    • @annecarter5181
      @annecarter5181 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

@@AtoZenLife A hat may protect the skin on your face but UV radiation bounces in all directions and does penetrate the eyes. Eye care specialists recommend sunglasses with dark glass (green color filters well) and lenses large enough to cover light coming from all angles. All family members need eye protection. Good eye wear is now made of safety material to keep it from shattering on impact.

Sunglasses block the necessary natural sunlight in the eyes that the body needs. Sunglasses filter out all the ultraviolet and other shorter wavelengths of sunlight energy. The characteristics of the light are further changed depending on the color of the glass. Glasses of all sort block most, if not all, of the ultraviolet sunlight from entering the eyes.

I like earrings when I wear a nice dress on Sundays, but I don’t own many. I always like to know what time it is and hate taking my phone out to check, so I like watches. I’ve been wearing one ever since I can remember. My family needs a microwave! We use it multiple times a day to heat up our leftovers. Using the oven would use too much energy and heat up the house. I also have an ironing board for my sewing projects - after all, most of sewing is actually ironing and pressing!

I also have a mechanic watch (no battery) and I found it life changing. I find it so much easier and faster to track time that way. I find using a phone to track time is super inconvenient. I can go days without using my phone and so I'm more focused in working and living.

Certainly this is a different list than most minimalists offer... So kudos for originality. Many suggestions don't fit my needs. Using a watch is less stressful than staying in touch with my cell all the time. The night table is essential to me to keep glasses, phone (for night time emergency), hearing aid, cochlear implant, small lamp for reading, glass of water - all things that are essentials for nightime safety or comfort. The hearing aid and cochlear implant are too valuable and fragile to put in a crack or under the bed. And not using a dryer would result in visual clutter and lots of wasted time hanging them up. However I like the boldness of your ideas which brings us to think more on our stuff.

As a minimalist mom, I honestly love my Apple Watch! I waited so long before I got one but I use mine all day, every day. Mostly to be able to do things hands-free with two (almost three!) small kids and without my phone on me all the time. I add stuff to my grocery list, use that same grocery list on my wrist while shopping, manage my meal plan, navigate, pay, use loyalty cards, enter&exit parking garages, turn on/off smart lights and the tv, keep track of reminders, use timers…I sound like an ad but it’s truly that useful 😂
Sure, I could do all that with just my phone, but I don’t want to hold my phone all day long.
Someone else commented this before me but you can just heat a little bottom of oil & dried kernels on medium heat in a medium sized lidded pot. It’s easy and you don’t need anything you don’t already own. Except dried kernels but I’m sure they’re available in every German supermarket (they are in the Netherlands).

There are different styles of minimalism. I personally like “cozy minimalism”, with thick cushy rugs (Target has nice thick bath mats for around $20, which work by my bed), a throw or two, a few pieces of meaningful artwork on the walls, plants, a tray of two or three fake candles (real ones scare the crap out of me; I probably died in a fire in a former life). And of course a small bookcase with my most treasured books. All of this is easy upkeep, but feels (to me) homey and comfortable.

As for a Fitbit, it served me very well when I committed to training for a marathon. I continued to wear it nonstop for 2 years. By then, I was very aware of my average step count and sleep patterns, and was happy to pass it on. My husband now uses it to increase his step goal, and I dont feel like a slave to it anymore.

Like you, I had a Fitbit, which broke and now I just use my phone. No more microwave. Can't imagine life without a mouse, though!!!! It makes work so much easier! Also no more lamps. No more clocks. No coffee maker, no kettle (just heat water in a pan on the gas stove). No dryer of course (I live in Africa, we use the sun!). I couldn't do without a night table (I need a spot for my books, glasses, bottle of water and hand lotion). I don't own a blow dryer; I have dry, curly hair and I let it air dry, even though it takes hours. Blender sounds tempting but I don't have one, we do have a big mortar and pestle to crush things, though. One thing I got rid of was floor fans after we discovered some really nifty fixtures that combine lights with a ceiling fan and Bluetooth speaker! Fantastic! And nothing on the floor you have to move around or that gets knocked over!

I would love to see a video on what to do once you reach your goal. Obviously the journey continues and as our needs change we adapt what we need and can let go of but after months of working at it every day I am now in the stage where I have nothing more to let go of, if I bring something in it’s to replace a broken piece so something else goes. And my entire flat takes a maximum of 15 minutes a day to clean. It’s the ultimate goal, yay me! But I’m left with a feeling of missing the decluttering stage. I’m trying to fill it with something else or just enjoying that I reached it but yet nothing seems as fulfilling. It’s like when someone retires then realises that they actually enjoy going to work, not just for the money!

And my (absolute amazing) mother in law, once arrived with one, and a big smile, telling me 'I know you don't have one so I bought it for you 😁' I was caught off guard and says something like 'b-but I don't want one 😳' she laughed so hard and said 'it's a little heavy, I wish I'd asked you before now'.
Thank you Marissa for the good time 'with' you.🌺

  • @Sapientiam

The first thing I thought of was Microwave, before you said it 😅
I sold my microwave early back in 2020 and I'm so so happy I did!😄 I had a fitbit that I bought back in 2017 and it broke, was put away in a box. When I started decluttering the items in that box, summer 2020, I decided to take a chance and I took it back to the store where I bought it and got to pick out something else for the same price (I let my mother pick something out for her husband's birthday, since I didn't need anything at that time). They initially said that the warranty had just run out, but I said something and due to the situation we where in (Corona) I was able to return it. Just plain luck that I was able to pull it through. I have also returned a doorbell (don't use a doorbell anymore) and a shower soap rack on warranty and got my money back since something was wrong with them (within two years later). I don't use a soap rack in the shower or in the kitchen anymore (sold the one in the kitchen). And it's all because I started to declutter and really think about what I needed and just finish what I should have done years ago.
I quit wearing makeup, don't use sunglasses and so on. There's lots of things that I have decluttered and don't use anymore, among others recently cheap fake fingernails, which I sold with a profit to someone who really wanted them right away.. Let's say I was really lucky.
I find joy in decluttering and I declutter basically every week. Finding that I don't need as much and that I can find calmness from that is a nice feeling. I still find things that I can declutter, which is baffling, which just proves that I have collected too much over the years.
I also don't use candles that you'd have to light up, I sold a bunch of my old ones. I only use Led lights now. I'll soon switch over to rechargeable batteries.
I don't own a car so I don't have to worry about car insurance, fuel or anything happening to it. More money saved.😄
I would like to say I don't own a television anymore, but I was so stupid as to buy one right before I started on my minimalism journey. And now I regret the purchase 😅
I don't own a regular couch as I own two single beds that I use as a couch And bed for guests.
    I bet there's more that I don't own anymore. 😄

Another trick for lessening wrinkles is to mist the fabric with a spray bottle of water and smooth the wrinkles out with your hand- your body heat will dry the clothing quickly! I do have an iron and ironing board, but I most often use the spray bottle trick… and if you want a little aromatherapy, add a few drops of essential oils to the water and shake before each use. I use a small glass bottle with a spray nozzle. I keep it in the bathroom and that little spray bottle with essential oils has multiple uses- wet your hair, mist your bed linens before sleep or use to freshen the air- not just to reduce wrinkles in your clothing!

Have a microwave and use it daily, but I don't cook, so my way of life. No toaster or coffee pot, I do drink coffee everyday but switched to a pour over method. I only have 4 lamps but only use 2 on a daily basis, never paid attention to that prior to watching you today. I've gone for many months or sometimes years before without a TV or washing machine (mostly as a broke student living in small spaces) but it didn't bother me too much. Same thing for the microwave and I also only missed popcorn 😄
Garlic presses are usually badly designed anyway, and annoying to clean. I started using a microplane grater for garlic and never looked back.

I wear a watch that someone gifted, didn't have one before and I know I won't replace it if it breaks. No special pajamas either, sometimes I get tempted to buy them before vacations to feel nicer than at home, but I always resist it because the already owned pajamas do the same job and I never feel deprived. Cable tv, dvd player we don't own as well- yes all ott platforms do the job, and I don't have the time to watch the best of best even. No point having too much to watch. No side tables in our bedroom because our workstations are in the bedroom and they do the job just right. No single use items in the kitchen, yes i can't even recollect we have a separate device to do that job that a mixer or cutting board can do. Kudos! ❤️

I think my instant pot makes my life simpler. ❤️ Also, what a good idea to reheat or steam things in the rice cooker!

I just moved and got rid of my satellite subscription. I have a smart TV so I just stream Netflix & Amazon for my entertainment.
Thank you for your videos. I wished I had started decluttering & minimizing when my kids were little.

I have a lovely CLUSE watch that I wear every day and I much prefer telling the time on it than looking at a digital clock or my phone. It's a comforting part of my routine and I feel weird without it.

Please consider getting and wearing sunglasses. Cataract surgery is quite expensive.

Hi Marissa! I stumbled across your videos about a month ago and am so thankful! I have held onto sooo much that I don't need/use or necessarily want but I've felt sentimental towards or felt it a waste to get rid of. BUT you've helped to challenge those thoughts and look at what are my priorities ie. I really wanted a nice spare bedroom for guests to stay, but it looked more like a storage space for things that I never used. So channeling into that desire has helped let go of these things. I also was excited by what you've said about being surprised by what you can sell on marketplace - and sold $170 worth of stuff in one weekend! :D
The point you made in this video about using what you already have is awesome. About a month ago we got a new piano and I had this box with my music which I put on top of my piano. My cat decided it liked to sit on top of the box. I actually liked my cat sitting up there while I played so I thought "okay, I'll get a cat bed to replace the box"... But while I was searching I realised that I didn't actually need the box anymore for music as I now had a piano stool to put the music in... And I had already purchased things in the past that my cat never used... So if I don't need the box, and my cat has decided it likes the box - then I'll just leave the box where it is - take my music out and put an old blanket in it. She loves sitting up there now and I didn't waste my money on an item I didn't need (:

I'll also say my husband is pretty happy too... He had asked me in the past to consider selling certain items and I just couldn't. He is way ahead of the "only have what you need or use" game than I am

P.S. You can do really good stovetop popcorn with just a frying pan and a lid - cup of oil and 1/3 cup of popcorn kernels. You can control the fat so much better :)

I didn't wear a watch for a long time but finally bought a simple Garmin watch that I use to track my running, biking, etc. I could definitely live without tv but not my microwave. I use it several times a day for tea, leftovers, etc. I agree with most of your other items too.
