    Some of the references are to the "Jabberwocky" poem in Lewis Carroll's "Alice Through the Looking Glass." "Slithy tobes," "borogroves," "heffalumps," etc. The main theme seems to be to make every minute of our lives count. I love its bouncy fun. It cheers me up every time I hear it.

      This was a favorite poem of my brother’s when we were growing up, he had it memorized and would recite it on command when he was about 9 or 10. So these phrases were very familiar to me 😀

    I love this song from them. My daughter says it sounds like what faerie folk would say to someone when trying to get them down to Underhill.

    Quirky really covers it! Mitch was asked what it was about and he said he had no idea, but it was fun to sing. Fun for us, too. The original is also strange and weird. Very creative.

      Yeah, I heard that interview and thought, if they can't even figure out what the song is about when they've learned the words and pondered on it, then there's no sense in me trying to figure it out. And yes, the more you listen to the song the catcher it is and the more you begin to like it - even the verses.

    “I don’t know why I like it so much”. 😂 I think anyone that didn’t know the original felt the same way. Why do we like it so much? Because PTX knows how to create magic…and it always works! Great reaction as always!

    The song references "Winnie the pooh, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan" Greek myths, and other children's stories. In other words, come along to world of adventure, fantasy and play

    The original by Cosmo Sheldrake is much slower, has a long drum introduction, and is a single singer, so it's very different from this version. It's definitely not a Christmas carol, although I'd just have to call it a fantasy song. But this is one of my favorites - whether the song lyrics make sense or not, it's a blast to listen to them perform it!

    I didn't know this was a cover, for a long time.
    It's sort of like a capella meets Dr Seuss, without the rhymes.
    Or maybe a song that like Tim Burton would write.
    But, with a happy and bouncy upbeat twist.
    It's actually one of my favorites.
    You might find, after the 2nd or 3rd time through... You will probably like it, more than you think you will.
    😸

    Listen to a bit of the original. It is even more bizarre. This was written to go with the Alice and wonderland kind of theme, I think. Listen to it 4 more times and you’ll love it like the rest of us!

    Checked it out and the guy that wrote it is an English guy. He calls his genre "Baroque pop". Some of the words are made up to give the song the feel of a fairy tale. The reference to the "birdsong" is that he bases his melodies on birdsongs. Hoped it helps.

    I love this song so much. It puts you in a good mood, but at the same time, the lyrics are so cryptic that you keep thinking about them. It's from Cosmo Sheldrake. The song became known through a 2019 Apple TV commercial. It's not Christmas themed at all. More inspired by fantasy stories. For example, The "Heffalump" is an animal from Winnie pooh, and the "slithy toves and Borogoves" from a dark children's poem called "The Jabberwocky" by Lewis Carroll :)

    Cosmo Sheldrake - "son of parapsychologist Rupert Sheldrake and voice teacher Jill Purce, and the brother of biologist Merlin Sheldrake", English composer. Started very young with incredible originality. Takes ques from the sounds of nature. Definitely worth going down the rabbit hole discovering him. The song took off in the US when it played as the soundtrack for a commercial for an 2018 Apple iphone. The minute I heard that song before PTX covered it, I posted over and over again that they needed to cover it. Thankfully, someone read my posts and they covered it in 2019. LOL

      Vocabulary note: cues and queues are homophones. It was pretty creative of you to split the difference and write "ques" when you didn't know which word you wanted. The word you wanted was cues.

    I get the impression it is telling us that life is too short to live it in a humdrum way. The reference to mythical creatures and nonsense phrases is calling us to live more like a child with the wonder of dreams and play.

    I always feel like I've entered a fairytale when I listen to this one. I love that PTX shows us that we don't have to be tied down to one type of musical genre. We can dip in and out of all of it and love it all. They make us more well rounded, musically. After they hit me with something unexpected, I hear myself saying over and over again, "OK. What's next?"
    Would. LOVE for you to react to "Shoshanna Bean with Scott Hoying - All To Me". Scott is more soulful than you've ever heard him. Please don't miss this one. I promise, you won't regret reacting to it. Thanks.

  • @Masq1980

    I had to look it up because I couldn't remember and it was driving me nuts but it's not Doctor Seuss (close though), it's inspired by Lewis Carroll’s poem Jabberwocky from Through the Looking-Glass: “’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves / Did gyre and gimble in the wabe.” So very much related to Alice in Wonderland I believe! It's just such a fun quirky song that is very upbeat and bouncy and you just can't help but chair dance along to it - and friggan song of a Mitch! He gets up there high - another fun one that I have probably suggested before (my memory is crap) so sorry for a repeat potentially but 'Sing' is an original that is amazing and upbeat

    Welcome to the club of "I don't know what this is, but I really dig it." That seems to be the general consensus of a majority of people who listen to this one. I've got a background in classical music, so I was less tripped out by it than a lot of people (musically), but the lyrics were like putting Alice In Wonderland to music, so it was definitely still trippy for me, too. I loved your reaction (you popped up at random on my front page, btw)!

    This song always trips me out! At first I thought it was a song from Winnie the Pooh?? The only Heffalump I’ve ever heard of is in the world of Pooh! 😂 The chorus is so damn catchy it made me love the song!
    Thanks for your PTX reactions!

  • @martinhafner2201
    @martinhafner2201 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think it is a fantasy song like some of the Winnie The Pooh songs, such as Hephalumps and Woozles, but with a darker edge.
    I had heard that it was supposed to be part of a sequel to the Nightmare Before Christmas or something like that, but it never happened.
    It had references to Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky" and Winnie The Pooh and various phrases that reminded me of Alice, Looking Glass and Winnie The Pooh. I get the impression the song is the siren song of some dark master cheerfully luring children away from their regular life for some bad purpose.
    They do a similar treatment to My Favorite Things, which is usually a bubbly song, being from The Sound Of Music. But they did the dark elf version, which is really fun. When a song has become too predictable and boring, they make a key change and give it new life. Quite often, all they really need to do is to fix the arrangement, better chord sequences, better percussion design, cleaner vocal execution and removal of annoying indulgences, such as in Royals. I hated the syrupy original of Royals, but PTX's version has the syrup removed. But sometimes a good song has been done the same way too many times and just needs a change to be interesting.
    PTX's voice mix is exceptionally good at strange fantasy songs. Oddly enough, an excellent example is their rendition of "Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy" from the Nutcracker Suite, which won them a grammy.

  • @SweetSlytherinGirl-Jennifer
    @SweetSlytherinGirl-Jennifer ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Definitely weird, but the technicality and difficulty that PTX just smashed out of the park makes this one of my top 10 favorites by them! Never heard the original, and I probably would not like any other version but this. You can't help but vibe to it, even if the words make no sense!

  • @jimk.7663
    @jimk.7663 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    It's a weird and catchy song, think of it as a psychedelic 'Alice in the Wonderland' song. The lyrics were originally written sung by Cosmo Sheldrake, but Pentatonix as usual made and sung it much much better.

    Owhh it's been so long since the last time I listened to rhis. This is an orginal of an English artist named Cosmo Sheldrake. After watching this, I checked out Cosmo. His other works are yup, somewhat weird. The PTX upgrade is indeed upbeat. This is not a Christmas song btw. And yes, the song has been used in an iPhone commercial years ago. Thanks Sean

    I think the first time I saw this one I just said "I have no idea what's going on but I'm having a good time."

  • @Eric1SanDiego1
    @Eric1SanDiego1 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I agree. It's weird, but a good weird! And the more times I listened to it, the more it grew on me. As for what genre it belongs to, I kept it REALLY simple. It's in the Pentatonix genre :D

  • @vidsorama2
    @vidsorama2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This is definitely not a Christmas carol nor Christmas song. Maybe you need to watch the original video by the original artist. You will be scratching your head even more. LOL. I love this Pentatonix video and I love their rendition of the song. Most fans love "Come Along". I see that others have explained the song already so I won't repeat. The words of the song are pretty cool. Read them and listen to them. Who wouldn't want to run away from the hum-drum and go to a place safe from greed, anger and boredom...?

    I don't know what the hay they are singing about, all I know is that I love them singing it. There is not any other song that I listen to where I don't know what type of song it is, I don't understand what the song is about, and I think the song is weird but in spite of all that I love the song and add it to my playlist anyway. I think that speaks to the expertise of Pentatonix that you will like a song and not even know anything about the song itself. Sometimes it's best not to put everything in a box and just enjoy it for what it is, good music.

    The original song had a darker, more malevolent feel to it. PTX kicked up the tempo and gave more of a funhouse vibe

    Think Alice in Wonderland meets Winnie the Pooh meets Walt Disney and Tim Burton. Not sure how you got Xmas out of that. 😉

    Hey Sean. You like PTX and so do soooo many people. I think you would truly enjoy their cover of “The Sound of Silence”. In my opinion, it’s better than the original.

    It sounds like the music from the baroque era of music, just modernized. A lot of Christmas carols are from the renaissance era; baroque developed richer harmonies and strayed away from the heavy religious nature of the renaissance. It sounds very whimsical and festival-like. My take, and I'm not an expert.

    Alice in Wonderland whimsy. Does that need explaining? It just is what it is. Yeah, the point is that it's still great the way they did it and sounded like a lot of people when there's only five.

    If you think this is weird, listen to the original. I say "weird" in a good way though, I had to listen to it twice, before I liked it, but I do like it. The first time through, I was enamored by the process of the making of the song.

    It’s a weird little song for sure, but it grows on you. I like that PTX upgraded it big time. The original is even stranger. It’s by Cosmo Sheldrake. th-cam.com/video/bIyl9bCp6W4/w-d-xo.html

    The reason you didn't like the verses is because the verses are written as choruses. in the last "verse" the lyric is; Come along with this verseless song and get to where the 2 ends meet" The song is styled with no real versus which is why the ones you thought Were versus didn't sound good to you. It's a clever tune. If you listen to the original, you see that this is truly an upgrade.
