Always an unstoppable force for uniqueness amid a sea of generic swill, OPETH has been setting the rulebook ablaze, and ploughing a uniquely progressive and exploratory furrow for over 25 years now. Neither conforming nor exhibiting any desire to be restricted to a single genre, OPETH, quite simply, has a time honored tradition of blowing our minds with both class and forward thinking. All these years later, nothing and everything has changed once again with their most recent album, Sorceress.
Sorceress was released in September 2016. For the band's first effort for Nuclear Blast via OPETH's imprint label Moderbolaget Records, the group returned to Rockfield Studios in Wales, also home to pivotal releases from QUEEN, RUSH and JUDAS PRIEST, where the Swedes had tracked Pale Communion in 2014 with Tom Dalgety.
Their sound tech needs a freaking raise.
Regcors levek awesomeness.. you can heard everything!
Guys...all the sounds of live concerts that are destined to future releases on cd, dvd or blu-ray are mixed and corrected in the studio, what you hear is not what comes out of the speakers
@@giuliobizzarri6103 hmm 💭 🤔
Some could be, not all are corrected though
Giulio Bizzarri I agree some mixing takes place. But ever seen Opeth live? They play as tight as they come man.
@@giuliobizzarri6103 Yeah but watch Alter Bridge at Royal Albert Hall with the Parallax Orchestra, their guitar tone and live mix was terrible. And I love AB. The guy setting up their live sound has a huge part in what we're hearing.
I want to buy this sound guy a beer
Also the mountains :)
Especially because the wind was blowing like 40 mph that night.
I’ll buy the sound guy a Truck of beer 🍺
trust me a Black Belgian beer is better than a truck bc its heavy and tasty enough
Where were you? There was hardly even a breeze that night at Redrocks.
Opeth is the Pink Floyd of extreme metal.
The first time I heard this band I said this is King Crimson meets Pink Floyd meets Napalm Death. An amazing combination of sounds and ideas.
Couldn't agree more! My very early years of life, my dad introduced me to floyd, I found Opeth on a whim in my early teens and the feeling I get from Opeth is the same as Floyd!
Also, sticking with Prog, I'll recommend Caligulas Horse, they're an Aussie prog band with clean vocals, start with the song Graves and you'll hear the Pink Floyd influence!
Added bonus they also opened for Opeth here in Aus!
I love how Mikael can switch between his death growls and his natural voice with such ease.
An angel / a demon... What a powerful voice 🖤
Cheesy Movie Productions Just as good as CT eh?
Cheesy Movie Productions well his cleans are better and the growl is more demonic than CT but that is my opinion
It's one or the other though!
his growl sucks now
As an audio engineer, it brings me much joy to see so many people complimenting the mixing engineer on the sound quality. I agree - incredible mix! Amazing band, amazing song \m/
As an audio engineer, you obviously also know that it was mixed afterwards in a studio. What you hear here, is not how it was at the show.
@@Khazandar So? We're listening to this and not the actual show right?
@@warrenoids true, but I've been to their concert once and actually they have incredible live sound even compared to like Dream Theater or G3. Idk wether it's the band's skill or the live sound engineer or great arrangement (probably both), but their live sound was damn impressive.
@@AntonNidhoggr having listened to both, I agree that sound was superior on Opeth. I am not much of mixing expert but I tried to explain to myself that with DT there's just too much going on on each instrument at some places, that it's impossible to mix properly :)
@@Khazandar if I may chime in at a much later date, I actually live in Denver, CO. and I've been to one or two, or 30... shows up at red rocks amphitheater, and the acoustics are astounding. I mean the sound is unbelievable. Most live recordings at red rocks are taken right through the board and Need little to no post production. I can't describe it to someone who has never seen a show there, but I'm telling you, aside from tweaking out some crowd and background noise, this is pretty much raw audio.

@@leotrash32 If you want to be blown away go check Wilderun - Veil of Imagination album, mixed by Steven himself, a pure masterpiece of an album, probably of of the best of the 10' decade... Thank me later!
@@brunocosta6849 Veil of Imagination was mixed by Dan Swano, the guy who produced the first two Opeth albums. I agree that is a masterpiece of an album, but Steven had no involvement in it
If opeth and gojira get together for a song, ill lose my shit. I love this so much.
What? They are different people?
my fave metal crossover is Of Blood and Salt by Gojira, Devin Townsend and Fredrik Thordendal from Meshuggah

That would be absolutely orgasmic
the mix is so good you can even hear the bass clearly
@@LETSTALKENTERTAINMENT not always, I'm listening in a shitty headphones and I can clearly hear the bass!
Completely wrong. The opposite is the case.
It all depends on the recording equipment and the person mixing it.
Don't spread misinformation please.
@Jared Dowty of course it matters, but the audio is so good you can listen really well with any equipment
No not really no bass

These jackets are badass
Even the wind started blowing when Mikael was soloing. Perfection!
@@drestamahadhika1620 Äkgreed.
Can't argue with facts
Joakim doesn't get enough credit for his backing vocals
Agreed on that point. His backing vocals are perfect.
Frederik does a good job too, imho.
Frederik's back vocals for Cusp of Eternity are spot on
Altay Bayraktar He also sounds cool in Sorceress, I think.
I never knew how good of a singer he was until checking out this very video. I REALLY hope Mikael's been paying attention to this and that their next studio album utilizes his voice with Mikael's for some really awesome and haunting vocal harmonies.
Man, always impressed by Mikael's guitar playing. He's no shredder or guitar god, but he's far better than most guitarists and that's still underestimating his playing. He's clean, controlled, his solos suit the pieces and are often very cool. But above all that, his compositions are filled with amazing atmospherics, beautiful chord progressions, often heartbreakingly dark or melancholy...
I couldn't agree more. He's got a real David Gilmour-ness to his solos and he has one of the best sounding vibratos
Ah I see, you are a man if culture as well ...
Couldn't agree more
@@boagrius3292 total gilmour
Opeth chord progressions are sooo good. Take Harvest for example
One of the best production/mix I've ever heard. Insane.
David Castillo is a genius. I haven't heard an album he touched that doesn't sound excellent.
@@theliberation9061 That's the David Castillo who works at Jens Bogren's Fascination Street Studio, right? I tought I heard his name previously somewhere.
Indeed, it sounds incredible. Will be purchasing.
Yeah those guys are amazing! Sounds really clean and organic. Suits opeth really well!
I don't know man, it's not bad but definitely not anything legendary. This mix has many good points, but I can definitely name a few bad ones.
Barely any bass, high notes on the guitars are sloppy, soundscape is imbalanced, no harmony between the instruments. It's as if the sound is organic, but at the same time it neither sounds as if you're standing in the audience, nor as if you're listening to it on record -- maybe the producer couldn't decide where to go with it? It's just not there yet. Performance is great tho.

Things to do before death: EXPERIENCE AN OPETH CONCERT.
Totally worth the money!
I'm doing it on November of this year in New York city
Did this back when ghost reveries just came out
Great expenses!
I've seen them live for five times. Best decisions of my life!
Fuck yessss!!!
I love how everyone’s talking about the sound engineer, but praise is also due to whoever is in charge of cinematography. This video looks like a movie.
Youre not wrong, but, uf the cinematography looks like crap, the song is still incredible; if the mix is bad, it directly affects how good the song is
@@bearmanguy it still affects people's perception of the music
@@snarkycat9563 agreed. imagine performing this in broad daylight with these effects lol. would look weird as hell.
Video editor more than cinematographer because I think this is not scripted, obviously, so they might have had 100s of videos from different angle. They would've sat down and chose best clips from each angle for each part of the song, synched it with the live audio, then color graded and added simple effects to make it like a movie. The video indeed looks like a movie and they have done a great putting everything together.
Watching this in 4k is better than most movies I've seen
EVEN THE FANS ARE IN SHOCK.
The live lasts EXACTLY THE SAME as the studio version. They are literal gods.

The Nordic metal scene is just ridiculous. So many awesome bands!
The last 15 years we have been honoured to live in the Nordic Metal Renaissance....Opeth, Nightwish, Ghost are for me the top of a very gorgeous looking Nordic musical iceberg....agreed

definitely not better than ever. They're still very good though
@@temporarymomentary I've been a fan of Opeth for more than a decade, I've heard Mikael growl both on record and live... this? This is Mikael's worst attempt at growling by FAR. Listen to this clip and then listen to his growls from any gig they did around the release of "Ghost Reveries".. if you still can't see this is bad, well...
(And I loved this bad, I don't bash on Mikael easily.. he's a brilliant musician and an awesome dude, but he has lost his growling touch these last few years. It's sad, but it's the truth)
to all the people talking about the sound guy...this is a from a Live DVD that Opeth released, not from a musical festival or something like that. The guitars, drums, bass, keys, and vocals were recorded at this show and then brought to a studio and professionally mixed. I am not a death metal fan but I frickin love Opeth. They have sick riffs, melodies, chord progressions, sick grooves and rhythms and screaming isnt just over the blast beats, and he sings natural vocals.
It's called prog metal and its hell of a ride. One my favourite bands of all time with distance
Sounds like you've been listening to some shitty death metal bands. There are plenty out there with Opeth level quality, or atleast close to it.
I wouldn’t call it death metal
@@A-Bomb401certainly is progressive death metal

I've been on this planet for a fairly long time and when I hear things that NEVER existed before I notice. That's what I love about Opeth, you hear melodies and riffs that never existed before. They caught my ear fairly early on, but I confess it was a challenge at first with the harsh vocals (love them and the clean vocals now). You're never too old to acquire a taste of something new and amazing!

I really really hope that you've opened up your world to Opeth. So many amazing albums. I'm an old time fan, but right now I'm completely in love with their latest album, it's not really metal, more of a prog rock classical album, but damn is it good.
Same here, I’ve never heard their music before
Was feeling somewhat depressed before listening to this, feeling better after listening to this, thank you Opeth.
That acoustic guitar effect is 10/10
You know that Opeth is a great band, when the fans are the kind of people who highlights the quality of the sound engineer..
I don´t know you, but i love you guys! The sound is fucking tight indeed..
I would like to highlight the Martin Méndez work, Opeth sound just wouldn´t be the same without this bass genius.
I found myself in the crowd, this was such a killer show!
The drummer freakin' nail it!!Denggg!!
I love how Opeth's shows are the perfect mix of an Extreme Metal show and an Eloy show. I mean the stage looks like an Eloy concert and so do the members. But most of the songs they play live can be considered part of the Extreme Metal sound, regardless of genre.
This is the best mix I've ever heard for a live band.

Thanks for making life a little less miserable by connecting me with my misery with this weirdly dissonant sad AND evil sound. It's late autumn now. Perfect to listen to this masterpiece
I've heard of these guys but never listened until now. Instant fan! What an incredible band. 2021 will be spent catching up with what these guys have done to date.
Curious to see how much you have heard now?
What a great gift to the world this band is.... Just seen them in Milan; wonderful show. I'm always amazed by how much they change from one song to another, or even within the same song; but always remaining on point and sounding distinctive... one of my fav band ever.
I can’t believe after a decade that I heard this song for the first time it’s still performed tremendously by opeth!!! I still can’t get the fact that the mix is so damn good, you can clearly hear that bass smoothly!!!
Such an impressive performance. I want to see them live so badly.
The growls aren't like the old times, but they're still absolutely glorious.
Great performance!
True !!! But" once opeth always opeth"

Words can't even describe what I feel everytime I listen to this masterpiece. Ghost of Perfection. 🙌🏿 true artists.
Love and Respect from Nairobi, Kenya.
This song is the entry point to another dimension of music. All other bands/musicians/artists come into same realm but not Opeth
@facepalm486 i have listened to more than you could imagine. Tool are pretentious with mathematical cringe. DT and KC are my all time favorites and Porcupine tree/SW is the only band that can be kept parallel to Opeth
@facepalm486 see for me, music should represent some kind of emotion and also, that shouldnt be deliberate. DT PT KC Opeth these bands have never composed something to prove their instrument capabilities. If you cant take a criticism about Tool, you too somewhere need to get down and listen to more soulful stuff no matter how much technical/non technical it is. I have learnt so many things from Danny carey but when it comes to memorable and emotional melodies, i dont recall many except schizm 46 &2 jambi right in two
The fuck with this cringy comment..just watch the video..give a like and fuck off..after 2-3 years you would realise that there's no 'entry point'. Good bands are good but no need to overbloat anything.

such a good sound quality for a live vid by a band that has near perfect albums release after release. goosebumps are an understatement
This is insane, it literally sounds almost identical to the studio version. Everything about this is perfect
I went to a metal festival once in Toronto. Mastodon was there. GWAR was there. Opeth came on part way through the day after some much heavier bands, and when Mike growled into the microphone I thought the fucking roof was going to come down. Could almost hear the sound engineer panicking, like, crap, I had this set for all the other vocalists.
this is a masterpiece... amazing band, amazing song, performance is top notch, location is crazy good looking... sounds better than the studio album!
This video and basically every concert video you've seen that takes place at Red Rocks NEVER fully captures how magnificent and magical this venue is. It is beyond words the feelings that overcome you in the middle of the headliner, after dark, and the crowd suddenly morphs into one gigantic entity, an ocean of people. You truly lose yourself, and that's just being SOBER lol. Believe me I've seen some people damn near have out of body experiences at that place. Best venue on Earth.
Opeth is literally an entire universe. They paint it in my mind when I listen their music. Everything from Orchid to Watershed represents Night and Darkness. That's why Damnation is so different from their new albums. Everything after Heritage represents Day and Light. Opeth is bigger than God because unlike God they exist.
Just got into Opeth, this performance really blew me away

Ghost of Mother lingering death
Ghost on Mother's bed
Black strands on the pillow contour of her health
Twisted face upon the head
Ghost of perdition stuck in her chest
A warning no one read
Tragic friendship called inside the fog
Pouring venom brew deceiving
Devil cracked the earthly shell foretold she was the one
Blew hope into the room and said:
"You have to live before you die young"
Devil cracked the earthly shell foretold she was the one
Blew hope into the room and said:
"You have to live before you die young"
Holding her down channeling darkness
Hemlock for the Gods
Fading resistance, draining the weakness
Penetrating inner light
Road into the dark unaware
Winding ever higher
Darkness by her side spoke and passed her by
Dedicated hunter waits to pull us under
Rose up to its call, in his arms she'd fall
Mother light received, a faithful servant's free
In time the hissing of her sanity
Faded out her voice and soiled her name
Like the marked pages in a diary
Everything seemed clean that is unstained
The incoherent talk of ordinary days
Why would we really need to live?
Decide what's clear and what's within a haze
What you should take and what to give
Ghost of perdition, a saint's premonition's unclear
Keeper of holy hordes, keeper of holy whores
To see a beloved son in despair of what's to come
If one cut the source of the flow and everything would change
Would conviction fall in the shadow of the righteous
The phantasm of your mind might be calling you to go
Defying the forgotten morals where the victim is the prey
