@@csengegall2595 I can only support this suggestion. Reverie/Harlequin Forest and Burden are two songs that really, in my opinion, show how an incredible vocalist Mikael is.
Ghost of Perdition, in my mind, is the PERFECT "metal" song. It flows perfectly, every section is engaging, it's heavy, it's mellow, it's got groove, it has that "opeth" sound, it's melodic, it's just magic.
Imho it suffers from the same issue as most Opeth songs: It feels a little harmonically lost. Chord progressions are slow and seem to go nowhere. Which fits the theme of the entire album perfectly. It's just that every Opeth song is like this. You don't have to go full Power Metal 4 chords song all the time, but having only these aimless chord progressions feels just... aimless.
This is a great version of the song! It one I recommend all the time, that concert in general is one of my favorite live performances from this band. "Harvest" and "Hope Leaves" from this same concert would be a couple of great singing-only picks
Love when you go in “educational mode” that definitely part you from most of the rest of the reacteurs out there. The way you know what you’re talking about sets the standard. No doubt you’re a true music lover. 🥂👍
The funny part about this is that, to Mikael's standards, the growls here aren't even good. Check out The Roundhouse Tapes concert for one of his best performances.
Exactly. I also feel these more recent live prrformances lack some of the emotion compared to the older live vocals. At least with these classic Opeth songs. That's natural I guess.
As a pianist/guitarist with no talents at drumming whatsoever, its not something I tend to actively listen to in songs. Opeths drummer, though, is one of the few that's made me stop and replay parts of songs because I was just like "whatever the drums did there was brilliant and i need to hear it again"
You were already cool Elizabeth but after this video, you've reached whole new levels!!! I enjoyed your reaction a lot and couldn't agree more with your analysis. Good music is good music and I'm glad you appreciate bands like Opeth and prog metal in general for all the right reasons. Keep it up, thank you! :)
That's an awesome tune! I like it so much that I learned it on guitar and hopefully one day I'll learn to sing it. But Mikael's singing has changed in the last 22 years, and in case you haven't given it a chance (which a lot of Opeth fans don't because it's "less metal" or something) listen to their last album, which hold Mikael's best singing performances. Bonus points for the Swedish version. I couldn't stop listening to the end of Continuum in a loop yesterday for instance.
I read in an interview with Mikael one time, that the initial opening line turned out that way to prove to himself and listeners that he can still scare the hell out of people. I think it worked lol
To me “The Moor“ is one of the best opeth songs. I feel like when people are only scratching the surface on this band “Still Life“ is an album that does not get the attention it deserves (I might be a bit bias because it’s my favourite)
It's consistently ranked as one of the top Opeth albums (sometimes #1, almost always top 3), so I'm not sure about being underrated. Maybe not quite as popular as BP, but still... life.
@@xyhmo no in general it’s not underrated at all but I feel like newer opeth listeners don’t give it as much attention because they see it as independent pieces rather than a whole concept album.
Yeah still life is definitely my favorite opeth album, with my favorite song being serenity painted death or white cluster. I’ve been listening to their first 2 albums recently and they are definitely underrated, but I’m still not a fan of my arms your hearse and deliverance even after giving them both multiple chances.

Man, that Red Rocks concert was/is so awesome, cool to see your take on it Liz, I was hanging out for this one. I'd also highly recommend checking out Demon of The Fall from the same set, they played it right after Ghost of Perdition and it goes off like a bag of cats, absolutely tremendous song. Cheers!
Awesome to see this on the channel! Mikael Akerfeldt was one of the first extreme metal vocalists to push the contrast between growls and really beautiful clean singing. And if you like Progressive Metal, their album Blackwater Park is an absolute landmark- and they even performed the whole album in a filmed live concert at the Royal Albert Hall about ten years ago, so that's something you should check out. Love the channel and hope you have a great new year!
Dissecting his vocal technique and analysing the overall awesomeness of his singing/growling takes a whole other level once you realise he is doing all that while playing guitar in signature times... wow
People who thread the songwriter needle like that only come along once in a generation. He's right up there with Dylan, Waits, Lennon and McCartney in my opinion.
@@ferox965 imho he is even above those legends you just stated, mainly because the genre he writes & plays the songs in is itself more complex and technical, and of course, the songs being 10 minutes long on an average. But to agree with you, he's right up there along with the established greats in music. I just wish he was recognized more, but that sadly won't happen given the niche genre of music.
Just wanted to say this is one of the best reactions I have seen. Elizabeth really knows what she is talking about, she has a lot of musical knowledge and sensibility, and her comments are always interesting and on point. Awesome!!
If you want another live version of Opeth that shows his growls in their prime, Deliverance or Master’s Apprentices from the live show Lamentations is the best footage you’ll get
Oh my god you did an Opeth song, my favorite band. This is amazing. I would highly recommend doing a song off of the damnation album to get the contrast between their heavy and soft sound and vocal styles.
I took too long to discover this MARVELOUS BAND. But never is too late. When I started to listen it has become easily one of my top 5 favorite bands EVER.
I love what you said right at the end about the melody being something that connects you back to the music and provides that familiarity - one of the things I love about this kind of music is the way it can create such chaos and dissonance one minute and bring you right back into comfort the next. Really takes you on a journey in that respect!
I love opeth, mikael is incredible, but man there is so much subtle perfection in a studio recording that you missed out on. The growls are so damn good in studio
I saw them live at a small venue and the lead singer stopped singing and saying guys, guys, stop! He asked the sound guy to change a few things and changed a couple things with the band and they started the song over again. One of the best sounding live performances I've ever heard compared to their studio sound. Long time fan
Michael was known for having very variable live vocals until about 2006/2007, when I think he started getting some benefit from vocal lessons. His live clean vocals has improved massively since 2007, so I think it's fair to say that his vocals really are a product of practice and training.
I think that high "ooohhhh" is still Mike. at 11:09 you can see Mike still holding a note while the other voice (Joakim) is doing the "yeah yeah ya" vocal line.
Given her response to how he sings vs. Growls in this song, I'd love to see her do a song from this set either post Watershed or from Damnation so she can get both sides of Opeth's diverse spectrum.
The funny thing is, Mike's not even a founding member of Opeth. He was asked to fill in one Bass. Then, the original members quit, not thinking the band was going anywhere. So, Mike took control, and the rest is history.
Some "Porcupine Tree" maybe? A brilliant Steven Wilson's voice blended with perfect instrumentals. "Arriving somewhere but not here" would be an awesome choice
I hope Elizabeth does a song like baying of the hounds or beneath the mire for examples of the crazy contrast between his harsh and super delicate soft pretty vocals! My favorite type of vocals! 😈🤘
I highly recommend the album version of this song. Mikael's death metal growls are deeper and truly inhuman sounding, and he sings those high notes at the end of the song himself, and not in falsetto. The live version is pretty good but the album Ghost Reveries from start to finish was Opeth at its peak.
It is really cool watching someone who obviously loves music in all of its subtlety appreciate this level of performance. Watching your reaction is almost as entertaining as watching the music video.
The first time I saw Opeth live was in a little dive just off a college campus. It was just after Damnation was released. There were scores of little sorority girls there, no doubt drawn to the melodic instrumentals and clean vocals of Damnation. The band opened with Deliverance. The look on those little co-eds faces as they fled that venue in abject horror were priceless!
I had the opposite experience…I went to see Opeth live and was hoping they’d play Ghost Of Perdition…they didn’t do that song and didn’t do a single hard song either…when the concert was over, I left in disgust…I’ve never seen them again live since
@@progperljungman8218 Yep, it was about ten years ago…if a band’s going to do something like that, give the fans a heads-up first so we can decide whether we want to see a performance with *not* a *single* death metal song…that’s the main reason I’ll never see them again…it’s like seeing Metallica and then they surprise you with an entire set of “Nothing Else Matters”-type songs…it wouldn’t surprise me if everyone in attendance becomes ex-fans
I usually love your reactions, I always find you so sweet. But this time your shock to when Mikael changes from growling to clear voice is priceless...lol!!! (I love Mikael btw, I love his voice)
I just adore Mikael so much. He has one of the best vocals in metal I've ever heard, and I've heard a *lot* of metal in my life. His growls are so resonant and consistent, and his cleans are just ethereal and haunting. And yes he does *all* of the front vocals, including those floaty high notes I've met him too, he's so warm and lovely, I got hugs and extra stuff signed and a short chat before they had to go out on stage 💕
So… I happened upon your reaction to Dio, Last In Line. I then, of course, searched for Opeth and loved this review as well! (I wish my 1st exposure to Opeth had been documented)😂 I love your reviews and analysis. Your innocent quirkyness mixed with child-like glee while being bathed in the intricacies of progressive metal is a delightful experience to witness. 😊 I searched thru your catalog of reaction videos and surprisingly found no Otep! 😳 I must recommend Ghostflowers!
Opeth is heavly inspired by both blues and jazz, so yeah. They started out closer to death metal but have slowly progressed towards a softer blues/jazz/progrock sound.
What an incredibly insightful video! I've been a guitarist my whole life but have been capped out by having little to no knowledge of music as a science. This was super cool and Opeth is suchhhhh an amazing band!
You don't need alcohol for unfiltered nerdiness, Elizabeth. You're a giant nerd in all your videos! Which is why I subscribed 🤩 Never stop being your amazing self.
My recommendation is that you find some interviews with Mikael also. His speaking voice is this really effortless, soothing baritone and he's a weird dude who always has interesting perspectives on stuff.
Aaaaaaa yes, finally a vocal coach reacting to opeth! Mikael has such an incredible voice. And he's just as good at the clean vocals as he is at the screams.
Something to note about Mikael is he's completely self taught how to sing. If you contrast he's clean singing in Morningrise and compare it to lets say their last album it's literally night and day.
Let's keep in mind this is done during a 2 hour long gig at 6500 feet of altitude. Impressive feat for the whole band, but especially for Mikael and ESPECIALLY at a time many consider him to be past his "prime" (I personally disagree, but it is inarguable old performances like the one at the Roundhouse Tapes here on youtube or with Bloodbath at Wacken are completely surreal vocally). That said, very happy to see Opeth! Looking forward to the premiere tomorrow.
His growls have certainly degraded at some point between 2006 and 2010 and pretty bad too, however from 2019/20 those growls are more consistent and sound better but the technique is still quite different from the early 2000's. That being said his cleans are consistently getting better and better and Mikeal in general is delivering beautiful gems of rare beauty as a performer and composer.

You don't have to go full Power Metal 4 chords song all the time, but having only these aimless chord progressions feels just... aimless.
@@horsti123654 *shrug* to each their own. I don't hear Opeth that way.

Nah, the pure acoustic guitars on the album version make it the superior listen.
This is a great version of the song! It one I recommend all the time, that concert in general is one of my favorite live performances from this band. "Harvest" and "Hope Leaves" from this same concert would be a couple of great singing-only picks

Im so impressed by the drummer. There are sooooo many tempo shifts and he keeps up amazingly
As a pianist/guitarist with no talents at drumming whatsoever, its not something I tend to actively listen to in songs. Opeths drummer, though, is one of the few that's made me stop and replay parts of songs because I was just like "whatever the drums did there was brilliant and i need to hear it again"
"Sounds like you're in a forest".... yeah.. Harlequin Forest!

The forest mood is quintessential part of Opeth.
just rewatched this reaction. I love it when you start talking meters and stuff...You almost make me understand it.
Ooooh, this is going to be good, I am so glad Opeth has been chosen
Elizabeth, you should REALLY listen to Opeth's "Face of Melinda" to appreciate the most of Mikael Åkerfeldt clean vocals.
I couldn't stop listening to the end of Continuum in a loop yesterday for instance.
my favorite clean vocals song from opeth is probably "hours of wealth", if not "face of melinda". both are great anyways.
Most underrated Opeth song ever. A true masterpiece. One of my all-time favorites.
Another pretty great song with Mikael singing with a clean voice is Universal Truth, at least to me that is
Yes good opeth...like to bid you farewell...anything from still life...a true masterpiece

Still life is what defines opeth's music actually.
Godheads lament is epic for me
It's consistently ranked as one of the top Opeth albums (sometimes #1, almost always top 3), so I'm not sure about being underrated. Maybe not quite as popular as BP, but still... life.
@@xyhmo no in general it’s not underrated at all but I feel like newer opeth listeners don’t give it as much attention because they see it as independent pieces rather than a whole concept album.

I’ve been listening to their first 2 albums recently and they are definitely underrated, but I’m still not a fan of my arms your hearse and deliverance even after giving them both multiple chances.

Mikael Åkerfeldt The growl master. he is insanely good. He is like the male version of tatiana
Akerfeldt is one of the greatest songwriters of the last thirty years easily. Someone like him only comes along once in a generation.
They were the first concert my wife and I went to together. He is amazing to see live because he can switch between both vocal styles at will.
Cheers!
Her surprised expression when Akerfelt went to clean vocal mode is priceless! :D
Dissecting his vocal technique and analysing the overall awesomeness of his singing/growling takes a whole other level once you realise he is doing all that while playing guitar in signature times... wow
Let’s not forget he’s doing all of this while playing guitar which is so hard. Can’t even tell ya how hard that is
I can.
It's really really hard.
The greatest band of all time. Akerfeldt is a musical genius as well as a fantastic vocalist/instrumentalist
and most importantly, an exceptional songwriter.
He is also the best dude on The mic between songs. Laid back and utterly hilarious

11:24 - Joakim Svalberg, the keyboardist.
He is fantastic and an amazing person too
I think that high "ooohhhh" is still Mike. at 11:09 you can see Mike still holding a note while the other voice (Joakim) is doing the "yeah yeah ya" vocal line.

The first time I heard Opeth, I thought it was two different singers. Nope. This is Mikael Akerfeldt in all his Swedish glory.
Some "Porcupine Tree" maybe? A brilliant Steven Wilson's voice blended with perfect instrumentals. "Arriving somewhere but not here" would be an awesome choice
I second that; Arriving Somewhere is an amazing song in every way. Mikael Åkerfeldt also sings and plays guitar on the studio version of that song.
Yep and the live version during that tour is stellar.

DEMON OF THE FALL AT THE ROUNDHOUSE TAPES!!!!! BEST GROWLS IN HISTORY OF MUSIC
Opeth, wine, and musical nerdiness? Take my sub.
I hope Elizabeth does a song like baying of the hounds or beneath the mire for examples of the crazy contrast between his harsh and super delicate soft pretty vocals! My favorite type of vocals! 😈🤘
Deliverance, my dude! Deliverance is peak Opeth, imo.
I highly recommend the album version of this song. Mikael's death metal growls are deeper and truly inhuman sounding, and he sings those high notes at the end of the song himself, and not in falsetto. The live version is pretty good but the album Ghost Reveries from start to finish was Opeth at its peak.
About time some Opeth was done. Great song but I'd suggest Harlequin Forest to get a true sense of his vocal abilities.
I am sure she will return to Opeth.

They have one of the cleanest sounds live I have heard. Phenomenal live band.

I absolutely love Mikael Akerfeldt's vocals. For a man who never wanted to be a singer, he's awesome. Getting to see him live twice was amazing.

I was at Wacken that year and saw Bloodbath and it was so damn good.
