Only saw Buddy one time. I was at a street fair in San Diego watching R Cray. He cuts his set a little short and apologizes and tells the crowd that "Buddy Guy is going to play in 10 minutes the next block over and I am not going to miss his show for nothing". Half the crowd turns around and moves down the block. Robert and his band stood there with everyone else and watched the show. Buddy came down off of the stage and was walking around the street playing. It was a blast. Every show has a story😊

Great story! Thanks for sharing. I also had the pleasure of seeing Buddy perform. It was in Central Park at the old band shell in NYC . At one point he left the stage in the middle of a song but we could still hear his guitar. There was a commotion at stage right and we knew he was coming into the crowd. People were following him like the Pied Piper and there was a bit of a dust cloud behind the group as he led them further away from the stage. He got about midway through the crowd, turned, and started coming straight towards me and my group. He got to where we were and we started going nuts and yelling and jumping around. Amazingly, he stopped and a huge circle formed around him. Somebody patted him on the back but he wagged his finger "no no no" at the guy and the people moved back a little. He saw a little kid about 5 or 6 years old and waved him into the middle of the circle and proceeded to rip an incredible solo with the kid looking up at him in awe. Everyone was going bananas at this point. Then Buddy high-fived the kid and turned back toward the stage with the crowd parting in front of him like the Red Sea as he walked away. He continued soloing as we tried to pick up our jaws off the floor. He returned to the stage to a thunderous ovation with a huge smile on his face and finished the show triumphantly. That was some of the greatest showmanship I have ever seen and I remember it like it was yesterday even though it was about 30 years ago. I believe he was the greatest performer in the world on that particular day.

Robert Cray such a Class Act. He was the main attraction at a concert and he gave up the number one spot for Etta James. I thought that showed such class. A salute

I don't know how many have noticed but NOBODY has more fun at a Buddy Guy show than Buddy Guy.
I've seen him had least 10 times and met him once. At one show he stumbled coming down the stairs from the stage and another guy and I caught him and kept him from falling. later when he was throwing out picks he came over to me, took my hand and pressed a pick into it.

Buddy Guy! I have seen him live at least a dozen times. Far cooler than that back in the late 80s and early 90s I had the amazing good fortune to be able to sit down and talk to him about his playing and music not once, but twice! Buddy is truly nice and genuine in person. The fist time I met him I started by telling him I played guitar, and commented on the equipment he had used that night. I asked him about his equipment, noting that he was using a full Marshall stack and playing a guild semi hollow, etc. He listened and answered my questions politely and intelligently, and commented I had a sharp eye for detail. He took me by surprise when he spread his fingers wide and put his hand directly in front of my face saying "Its in the hands, not the equipment." Haha! It was a great moment and great advice from one of the Greats. Yes!
The second time I met him was at the same venue. I was there with my girlfriend and a friend who is a professional photographer. We sat and talked and Alex took pictures (which sadly I have no copies of). I asked him about his upcoming shows. Over the next couple of weeks he was playing a huge festival in California, the Montreux Jazz Festival I think. Then he was going to England for a performance at the Royal Albert Hall, followed by an all star show Eric with Clapton, Robert Cray, and Stevie Ray Vaughn. That show was Stevie's last.
Thinking back on all that, it is a surreal batch of memories. This video looks to be from around the time I met him. Both times the famed harmonica player Junior Wells was there as well, and I met and talked with him too. It was amazing, but Buddy Guy was special. Meeting him really inspired me at an age (19,and 24). where events like that can have a big impact. Buddy Guy has been my hero ever since. I was a heavy metal guy at that time, but meeting Buddy inspired me with his passionate blues playing and launched me into a love of the blues. Buddy Guy is the best showman you will ever see, and a damn good guitarist. He has a quirky style that is matched by none. After all, he is Buddy Guy.

Jimi Hendrix once told Buddy that he was one of his biggest influences, now THAT is a compliment! Living near Chicago, I have seen Buddy play many times at his club Buddy Guy's Legends, and he puts on a show like few others. He has such joy in his heart when he plays and you can see it on his face. He is a guitar pioneer, an excellent player, and one heck of a nice guy! Thanks for making this Fil, now check out Albert Collins.

I remember he played outdoors at a Jazz/Blues festival here. He had his guitar on wireless, and he went out into the crowd, and picked a little girl (maybe around 7-9 years old), and had her strum the guitar while he fretted chords, etc. All live. When the weather took a turn for the worse, clouds darkening the sky, the temperature dropping and you could tell a shower was coming, he just naturally segued into "Feels Like Rain". One of the best natural entertainers I have ever seen, and with a good sense of humour and wicked chops and blues singing voice to boot.

Buddy Guy is the greatest of all time. Hendrix too! He was a huge influence on Hendrix, the showmanship, wild abandon. He was the biggest musical epiphany in my life. Saw him at 16, blew me away with that infectious passion and joy. He stood and signed autographs , never left the stage, for an hour after the band left. He is what every musician should play for, the passion of music.

Great job capturing the essence of Buddy Guy, Fil! I'm from the Chicago area, have seen Buddy a few times recently, and in his own club a few years back (where he is super-comfortable - it's his 'home'). Like you say - those bends (!) that just keep going when you least expect it, the fun with the crowd, the dynamics, going sooo low and then the "melt your face" insanely intense burst of energy. If you love the Blues go see him, he is better than ever, and he's the last of that generation. Thanks for doing such a great job covering this Blues master!

I was at this performance at the 1993 Woodlands Blues Festival which included Koko Taylor, Lonnie Brooks, Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, Eric Johnson, B.B. King & Gregg Allman. My wife and I actually appear in the full video when Buddy walked past us while he was walking through the audience. We used to have great festivals like this in Houston 25+ years ago, but unfortunately no more. Now its all hip hop, pop, country, and Mexican music. Buddy is really a joy to watch even if you don't like Blues.

I will never forget seeing him in Holland 1992, I was 16 or 17 years old. In my mind he was already an old man then, he BLEW me away. Energy, Dynamics, SHowmanship. My knees get weak just writing this.
I like to think he played the intro of Voodoo Chile because he saw me wearing a Hendrix shirt. He started, quit and said "enough of this"
    LOL!!!!

Remember seeing Buddy play at the student union at the U of Iowa back in ‘89 (I think). What struck me most besides his wonderful playing and showmanship, was his powerful voice. It was a fairly small venue, but the room was big enough. Most of the time he spent prowling around singing without a mic. Perfectly audible - more than that, strong! It was like hearing him play in someone’s living room :)

The last song SRV ever played was Sweet Home Chicago. I was there at Alpine Valley that night. It was at the end of Clapton’s set. Stevie had finished playing earlier in the night. We had heard Clapton had brought out Jeff Harley for his encore the previous night. We were excited to see who Eric would bring out. He announced Ladies and Gentleman, the World’s Greatest Guitarists. And out walks Stevie and Jimmie Vaughan, Phil Palmer (Eric’s side guitarist on this tour), Robert Cray and Buddy Guy. They did a jam of Sweet Home Chicago that lasted nearly 20 minutes with everyone taking multiple solos. It was absolutely amazing. And then Stevie died within an hour.

Buddy used to show up several times a year at Albert's Hall in Toronto during the 1980s when nobody was paying attention to the blues. He was normally awesome but there were days when you could see the frustration that the talent was not being acknowledged. The biker types were making up a big chunk of the audience in his shows and supported him and Junior Wells. I think that most of us were appreciative of his showmanship. At times, when the weather was good and the crowds were so large that customers had to line up outside he would take that huge extension cord and take the show outside. It was amazing to see him doing his thing outside while the notes that he was playing were blasting from the open windows upstairs. The magic was there as was a tragedy of never getting the attention that he deserved.

We spent a fat chunk of the Chicago Blues Festival at Legends some years back. Buddy had non-stop fabulous unknowns booked for the whole weekend, which he spent fussing over his handmade soulfood buffet and hanging with folks at the club. Pretty epic. I've seen him play many times--also consisently epic. Also cool is that he tours as an opener for guys he thinks he can help boost. I saw him in that capacity with both Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Johnny Lang.

I've had the pleasure of seeing Buddy on 4 occasions. He playing more intimate smaller venues now. Very personal...only man I've seen to use his handkerchief while performing. On my 3rd and 4tih shows I became more brave and approached the stage after the show while he was placing guitar pick literally in some peoples hand. As he passed by I said, " I appreciate your gigs George! Recognize his birth name he smiled and presented a pick both times. Now in his early 80s money is always well spent at his venues. Please see him if he comes close to your hometown.and or countries. Very humble man and personal man.

I know I say this a lot, but Buddy Guy is legitimately in my top 5 list of favorite guitarists of all time. I've seen him live so many times I can't even count. Buddy can do more with one note than most guitarists do with an entire song. I've met him on a few occasions and he is just the coolest, nicest down to earth guys and funny as hell. He is truly one of the last of the old school bluesman.

I first met Buddy while going into a pub for a beer. A crazy black man with a guitar ran down the stairs and played up to the young lady I was with. The music was blasting upstairs and when the outer door opened up his guitar licks could be heard from the windows above the door. We never made it into the pub and wound up going upstairs for a show. We kept going for the rest of the week. And the next time he showed up. And the next. And so on. He and Junior were one of the best acts that I have ever heard and both were amazing with their interactions with fans. Wherever they showed up the local bikers would show up as would more than a few of the suits and older people. I miss those days.

I had the great pleasure of seeing Buddy play an open air show in downtown Savannah, Georgia, in the 1990s. During one song, he came down off the stage and walked through the crowd while jamming. To my complete amazement and shock he stopped right in front of me and jammed for about 30 seconds. Like, a foot away, facing me... it was exhilarating and terrifying. I like to lie to myself and think he sensed a fellow player and decided to bless me with a great, personal, unforgettable gift. What a memory. Great video, Fil.

I lived about 1 mile from his club ("Legends") in a cool Chicago nbhood called the South Loop from 2002 to '13. It was a rockin blues club - really great. I was in there about once a month. Both Buddy Guy and Luther Allison had regular stops to gig once or twice a year in Minneapolis back in the 70’s. They would play a saloon called The Joint which had an outdoor concert space. Not many chairs there and nobody sitting down when these players took the stage. Great showmen as well as musicians. They would ride the shoulders of a bouncer out in to the crowd, play behind the back, teeth, upside down, whatever it took to get the crowd to dance and shake. The joy created on those Summer nights by that music was transcendent. Jimi Hendrix was known to be a great fan of Buddy’s.

His own style? Buddy Guy has EVERYBODY'S style! I saw him at Antone's, in Austin, TX, about a month after Stevie passed, and he lit that place up, on his own hook - but then he started doing "imitations" of other guitarists! Elmore James, BB King, Muddy Waters, Albert Collins, Albert King - and Steve Ray Vaughn! Not just a testament to the man's own talent, but how he respects and honors other musicians by really *listening* to them and *watching* how they make their own magic. I've heard others do it, but not like Buddy - you could close your eyes and not know who was really playing. There's really no one like him, and if you ever get a chance to see him live, SEIZE that opportunity!

Take it to the limit & THEN Some!! Buddy is incomparable in his Passion & Performance! I LOVE IT , FIL!!! THANK YOU!!

Hey, Phil! Love these vids you do, critiquing various performances. They are great! While I'm not a musician (unless you count playing drums in elementary school ;-) one thing I've come to see: The "top" players don't have to look at their hands while they are playing. Their hands just know where to go. This may not be the best "metric" for musicians, but it seems to be a pretty good guide for expertise...

Yeah the top players know their shapes! So even with your eyes closed, you know where you are on the fretboard!

Muscle memory. You learn not to poke your nose with a fork when you’re eating. You know how to ride a bike, with or, without an engine. You can use a smart phone with thumbs to text. Practice and then you get good. Jose Feliciano probably never looked at a fret once in his career. Some people have the ability and desire to be able to do different things. Figure out what you want and what you need to do to make it happen. Players that have had thousands of hours playing, have been teaching their brain and muscles to learn. And then the next couple of months are gonna be easy and the next couple of weeks are gonna be easier, and then the next couple days... see how that works?

I saw a Buddy Guy show about 12 years ago and he just owned the stage and played and sang great. A true legend, thank God he's still around. He recently put a new album out so he's keeping at it, not retiring.

Buddy Guy is one of my all-time favorites!! Something great about him (and a lot of other electric blues guitarists) is that he gets that amazing tone without a bunch of effects other than maybe a wah pedal, a cranked amp, those hands and his trusty volume knob! 🤘🏻🎸😎

One of my favourite ever gig moments: 2001. 13 year old me sitting right at the back of the Royal Festival Hall 'seeing' BG - well I couldn't see him that well but he sure was rocking. Then a few bars into the solo of Damn Right I Got The Blues he starts chatting to the tech side-stage and we lose him, obviously I start thinking there's a problem but impressed he's still playing. Next thing I know he's walking right in to the audience (still playing) and sits down in the back row and has a little chat to the guy next to him while soloing away.

Everyone should aspire to play blues guitar. Like jazz, I feel that it is so free flowing, that you feel like you could go on for eternity.

He's still out there performing at age 83. . try to stop him !
If you're unaware of it, check out the story of Buddy mentoring a child prodigy of the blues, Quinn Sullivan. The kid was born to play the blues ! Since age 5 or 6 he said his hero was Buddy Guy & wanted to meet him. He did, at age 8 (2007) and Buddy had him onstage, and began mentoring him, took him touring. The boy is now a young man of 20 with his own successful performing & recording career, and has played with the big names in blues. He & Buddy still perform together, there are videos.

I saw Buddy Guy at a club in Orlando in about the year 2000, and he was amazing! I love the guy because he absolutely pushes that guitar to the limit (Eric Clapton says he loves Buddy Guy because "he plays great and he always seems as if he's on the verge of losing control"... but he doesn't lose control, he just has this great, emotional sound!. An influence on me, and I'm nowhere in his league as a guitar player. At one point, he walked through the crowd and just kept playing great, he completely connected with the 200 or so people in that club. Gotta love this guy, what a legend. :)

Some years ago I was studying and playing a lot of Jimi Hendrix. I start studying his influences as well. I bought a DVD of the Montreux Jazz Festival.. Buddy Guy and Carlos Santana play Stormy Monday and blew my mind. I very immediately saw where Jimi got a lot of his bends and technique from.

Ha! Yes, you have done him, this version too, he is is a risky, dangerous, inspirational and crazy player! Some of the time I find he can be hit and miss but always exciting BTW I stole all those two tone bends ages ago, it is indeed a great sound, you can do the tone bend over and over then, just hit the big one to end phrase, I love when he bends down while applying vibrato too and that voice and how his lead guitar and vocal contain same touchs.. So much to love with Buddy..
