Thanks for taking the time to explain things as well as perform! I feel through each video I am getting to know a friend! That is rare for me, but you have that extra something special!
Thank you as a parent of a want to be drummer I know nothing about recording Music now i have a guide to follow if he takes it seriously in the future.
@@DouglasJBender Because of limited space it will most likely he will get drum pads rather than a full drum kit . Just no idea what to get , thought about asking the school for help in choosing equipment .
Loved listening to you about your set up. Back in 2000 I picked up a Boss BR-8 which was pretty good back in the day. 8 tracks with each track having 8 virtual tracks. It recorded onto a 100mb zip disk, which I would then mix down and record my final mix via optic cable to a CD-R. I also used my Rode studio mic. I still have all my old equipment and going to use it again to record my new song. I won't continue to bore you but I have to mention the song you did called "Don't Cry For Me" Wow, incredible. I really liked it. Take care Fill, and as always brother, Rock On!
So interesting..... but way above my pay scale! 😳. I dated a studio bass guitar musician once and was privileged to witness a recording session. OMG!!! The work! But I left with a huge appreciation of how important the contribution the guy on the mixer board was.
Wow! Just the video I needed. Really. When I was young, we didn't talk about song producing, we talked about sound engineering - I loved Alan Parsons for his clean almost ethereal style- (not sure *now* what the difference is), and since I couldn't become a drummer (1st fav instrument. 2nd is the bass), I really really wanted to become a sound engineer, but had no idea where to study for that.... Remember that we're talking early 80s, as soon as I was ready for the university. And no computers back then. No teacher. Now, even if I could, I'm too tired, and stressed out to learn anything new... I'll be 59 on Friday (next week), and have no income to buy software, mics, etc. I think I told you that my parents made me play flute and not drums, as we were coming to live to Spain back in 1976, and apartments here in my city are small (it's a big ancient city with so many ancient monuments, it's hard to knock down blocks and make streets larger, so my city is dense, about 750,000 people, but in a small area of land), and walls are thin,, so there was no way I could play drums and only hear them myself through ear phones. It would've disturbed my neighbors. But I did play flute in a prog rock group here when I was 18. Funny thing is, that, after seeing an ad they'd placed in a record store, I joined. We'd play in some family garage, and practically, as soon as I started, they got tired (not of me, but of their prospects, I guess), and I tried as hard as I could to keep them (all guys) together. Didn't work. So back to..... listening to other people's music, and playing along with my flute, at home. By ear, no sheet music necessary. And improvising, harmonizing, all sorts of stuff, because I'm pitch perfect (my ear is, but my voice is total crap). But I love how you explain everything in such detail!!!!! Good for you, and so happy you now have 195.000 subs!!!!! You've worked very hard to have them. You've learned so much in order to do everything you do. I really wish some stupid record label, who can't see anything decent past their noses, would sign you up, but under *your* terms!!!!!!!!! Oh, and why the heck (and my hearing, thank the gods is still perfect for now), do they hardly give any volume to the bass??? There are some great bassists out there!
Thanks a lot for that introduction to your studio. You answered all the questions after I watched your last video. I like your attitude, and that goes a long way to explaining why you have almost 60K subscribers. And I still like you comment section, interesting people despite the occasional troll. But surprisingly pleasant people, hard to find today. I like aggressive guitars, not comments.
I love the behind the scenes. It’s amazing how far we have come with audio gear and recording. Sometimes just a good clean sinceable approach to recording is the trick. I recorded this on a Fostex four track X 15 back in the 90s. Rich Secrist Take OFF/You can run.
Thank you so much for the insight into what you do and how you do it! So interesting! So glad that you have a piece of equipment that allows you to do what you do. I had a setup several years ago, that allowed me to play along with either radio, CD, phono, or tape, and using my headphones, only I could hear what I was playing. Very useful...I learned a lot of songs by ear that way. Especially the ability to rewind, or skip back to a part that I still hadn't figured out yet. I love watching your video's so much! Rock on Fil! Keep up the great work!
Thank you Fil for taking the time to explain this topic. When I played professionally there were not Personal computers. We spend our time and money talking about amps, mics, where to stand, that type of thing. I have been interested in the digital process every since it became available to the average musician but never had anyone explain it. Again thank you I learned a lot. I hope you will continue on with this series. I am sure many people would be interested. R
Thanks Fil - some really useful info there! I suppose most people will develop their own methods, but its a great starting point for newbies. Really interesting to see how you construct a song, instrument by instrument / track by track and whether you use a mic or plug into the interface.

Great run through that touched on the tip of iceberg regarding equipment, set up and some familiar tens of music production jargon! I agree with many, dedication, hard work and talent also will be the foundation. Otherwise all the equipment in the world wouldn’t be sufficient. Thank you Fil!
Hope it’s ok to say this but I can’t help but think of Taj Farrant Jimmy Hendrix and the great musical geniuses from some other world that I’ve had the privilege of being a part of as one who loves and appreciates music Thanks for all you do Fil You’re simply amazing

My daughter is studying at film school. I have Cubase and want to give it to her since I can't use it on my Linux system, but she doesn't have room on her disc drive.
Really interesting video, Fil. Things are a lot different than the old days when I recorded with a 4 track cassette unit. Much better sound quality too! Nice to see you like the rail bridge pickups. Thinking of putting one in my Strat. Thanks for all the info!👍😎🎸🎶
That was really cool Fil! A great insight on how you lay your tracks down and the amount of hard work that goes into it! Really interesting and informative! Brilliant Fil! Cheers Mario!😁🤘🤘🤘
Hi Fil, (new fan here - so glad I found you!) I just wanted to say a big thank you to you, in appreciation of all the great work that you do! Your incredible voice and guitar playing is MINDBLOWING! And your authenticity in communicating what needs to be addressed in the music industry is eye opening to say the least! I just wanted to say that I tried to be a songwriter for many years. I was recording demos myself at home and I am not technically minded so I needed help along that journey. I asked for advice where I could and in all that time I could never get my head around what an interface was and why it was important. This really held me back! In this video you explained this so beautifully and simply that I understood it in minutes!! Now I am exploring a career in Spirituality and light work, creating Meditations at home, this advice has transformed how I am going to do things! I am now going to create the background soundscapes myself!! So a big THANK YOU!! It's such a simple thing but so many people come out with jargon and industry words that confuse people!! Like its some kind of eiite club you can't be part of. I had a look on your channel for any other videos you have on studio set up or your advice on home recording but I couldn't find any. I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU! & if you plan to do any videos in the future on this then you are SO gifted at teaching the basics of home recording!! You bring a lot of clarity to teaching! Seriously, a BIG thank you :)
Funny ,and you can tell my age and ignorance about the makings of music by my comment, but I didn't know they had electric drums! It's so great for you musicians that you have such technology available. I must say that your sound production here is excellent (never too loud , and we can always hear you clearly). You sound live and like you are in the room.
I dig what you mean about those older components. I still use my 2010 Mac Book Pro because it still has all those firewire ports that talks to my classic Digi 002. There's nothing so simple nowadays. Nice work, son
I use Behringer 2 port interface, and Reaper for the DAW, this works for me, I am amazed with the quality-your set up is great Fil and the results speak for themselves.
Hello Fil !! I am pretty much backtracking on your videos, and analysis videos. Anyhow, I love how you explain anything & everything.... So much to catch up on ,and so little time!! Keep evolving and creating Fil🌟🤘♥️
For a Do It Yourself home studio, you have produced some really great recordings and video productions. Keep up the good work Fil. You're bound for success!!! 😎👍🏾🎶🔥♥️🔥🎶
Fil- just stopped halfway thru this Vid to listen to your covers- fucking blew me away dude!! You need to be a Headliner, dude! You freakin' rock! Also this video is very informative. Keep it up. Ill keep watching and sharingyour vids on Facebook with my friends- many of whom are musicians
I came across this video and I can't even wrap my head around what your explaining😉. So fascinating! People who are musicians are I'm sure are learning too. You are the jewel in the crown Fil. I love your Live Streams and Live Analysis and everything you do. I am so happy to be a Patron for you. Thinking out loud. I was trying to think what I want to eat today and then I remembered you said in one of your Live Streams that you had a ham/pineapple pizza so that sounds good to me! Have a great day! oops sorry it's an admin day for you!❤
That was fun. I have developed a good deal of respect for you through your analysis videos and enjoyed several of your performance videos. That being said, you have made a few choices I would not have made. And THAT being said, my respect for you grows. You make no excuses for your choices and make the only justifications that matter: it works and/or you like it! It doesn’t hurt that the end product is top notch either! 🤙hang loose and rock on!
Thank you for this amazing explanation of the recording process. Let’s see, that makes you a: 1. Musician 2. Songwriter 3. Teacher 4. Historian 5. Computer nerd!

Fascinating world of music making, Fil's explanations are so clear and informative even a couch potato like me can get it. I will be thinking interfaces, mikes and mixing board next time I listen to music, thank you Fil.
Wow! What a great explanation of how You get everything done. I agree with Gear 73 You make it look so easy. I'm worn out just from watching this video. Keep up the good work that You do, it will pay off. Thank you for sharing!
That was absolutely fascinating, and answered some questions I've had in the back of my mind since I started following you. Thanks for taking the time and effort to detail all of it. (I always thought your NT1000 sounded killer from the very first. I hope your new mic is at least its equal!)
Just caught up with this vid from Fil - have been enthralled by his "waveform" analysis ones of various artists - and have to state that so many of the comments from other people on here say ALL of the things that I would have said. There are far too many attributes to mention but a couple for example: Fil's dedication to explaining things for ~ people like me that have NO musical talent / no real knowledge of what a musical performance requires ~ Fil being able to break things down in such a way that is informative and interesting ~ His desire to "educate" us on those aspects that appear "magical" to us non-musicians The list of these attributes for Fil is almost endless. He (Fil) was not around in what I claim to be the glorious 60's, 70's (or the earlier 40's / 50's) when music was not so "artificial" as it is now, yet this talented artist himself (yes, just caught up with a view of his performances on X factor in 2013) clearly recognises the talents from those previous times. Then, Fil, himself utilizes today's modern technology in such a way as to enhance appreciation of bygone performances, together with highlighting modern day performers possibly "cheating". The "cheating" reference is not really meant to be derogatory, just identifying that some are not perhaps quite so talented as previous bygones. Back to this particular vid - A wonderful outline of the of the recording process with enough detail to enable me to realize that it is a time consuming procedure. I am envious (in a nice way) of the talent Fil possesses (and others that are also musically adept).
You need to do one on Jeff Lynne ELO. He's a musical genius. ELO pumped out all kinds of hit's in the 70's. Took over the airwaves. He plays all of the instruments on a few of his songs, with some fancy recording. He a hell of a song writer as well.
I absolutely loved this video Fil, I really like how you are very humble and use relatively affordable gear. I understand about your line 6 KB37..I use line 6 toneport UX1 with gear box..(how old lol)..but it works for me..rythm rascal for drum programming and an Ibanez Jem for all guitar work.....and my daw is embarrasing but i have used it for 21 years...N-Track studio 3.3...as you well put it...when you get really aquainted with a piece of gear and it gets the job done..no reason to upgrade. I actually record exactly in the same process as you do. Brilliant stuff mate...a breakdown on your music videos should definately be on the cards. Thanks for your work Fil.
"They don't make it anymore..." I, along with every other musician I know, has uttered those exact words. I chuckled, in a somber way, when I heard you repeat that famous rant a number of times in the first minutes of the video. Yeah, I wish "they" still made lots obsolete gear. Great explanations, take care!
I love how humble you are about your talents Fil and how you take the extra time to break things down for those who don't know as much as you. I think that is a great characteristic of your videos and honestly a great character trait in general, regardless of the subject matter.

Awesome Fil thanks for the info. I worked with Cubase as well when I was younger. Now I'm messing with Bandlab a free program online.
No problem!
Back in the 70s I did a lot of home recording with nothing but couple cassette decks, mic's, small mixer & LOTS of wire!!! I hear ya Brother! ! Ha
@@davidmartin3971 things have really changed!👍😎🎸🎶
That was really cool Fil! A great insight on how you lay your tracks down and the amount of hard work that goes into it! Really interesting and informative! Brilliant Fil! Cheers Mario!😁🤘🤘🤘
Thanks Mario!
🤘🤘🤘great studio land🤘🤘🤘
amazing really cooool great job
video perfecto artistico bravo🤘
REDBONE-come and get your love
Thanks for the kind words!
Very informative!
Thanks! I'm only ever in this room 😂
@@wingsofpegasus LOL
Sir you are fantastic again as usual I say again. Bless.
Thanks!
I dig what you mean about those older components. I still use my 2010 Mac Book Pro because it still has all those firewire ports that talks to my classic Digi 002. There's nothing so simple nowadays. Nice work, son
What I did have:
Mesa Boogie stereo 2-90 rack mounted
Tri-axis rack mounted
Alissis effects rack mounted
SKB shock absorber case
I use Behringer 2 port interface, and Reaper for the DAW, this works for me, I am amazed with the quality-your set up is great Fil and the results speak for themselves.
Thanks Michael!
Very interesting,I was wondering how you record all your songs.
Thanks!
Been wanting a rig rundown a long time , love it THANKS FIL
Is there anything you can't do? This is genius. 🎶
Thanks!
Thanks Jim!
Very informative installment!! I think this may help folks.
ha, me? A Jazz camera over 5 years ago. the thrill was gone before it started ;)
Have a great day! oops sorry it's an admin day for you!❤
Thanks Fil, cool video.
That was really amazing Fil. But the most amazing thing you revealed here is that you're 35 YEARS OLD!!!
You're definitely aging well my friend
Thanks! 36 now! 😅
Thanks!
Fascinating
Thank you for this amazing explanation of the recording process. Let’s see, that makes you a:
1. Musician
2. Songwriter
3. Teacher
4. Historian
5. Computer nerd!
😂
This just popped up in my feed...just as good the second time..☺️....your hair looks fantastic this way too..😍😀
😂
Very interesting. My brother was a musician too and did all this stuff. But I never knew all the work that went into it. Thanks for explaining it all.
Nahsty hehvy sound! Love your accent! The funny running joke is how people from England could sing perfect English with an american accent and show no English accent (from England) lol
Keep up the good work I really enjoy your reviews thank you
From Los Angeles, CA
Haha thanks! Yeah I learned to sing from American dvd's and videos 😅
Haa haa haa... I noticed I'm loosing my own Native American accent. Still speak my 5 other native American languages but have to pronounce them right. Code Taker here? Makes America Free. We do it again in heart beat.
Fascinating world of music making, Fil's explanations are so clear and informative even a couch potato like me can get it. I will be thinking interfaces, mikes and mixing board next time I listen to music, thank you Fil.
No problem!
Wow! What a great explanation of how You get everything done. I agree with Gear 73 You make it look so easy. I'm worn out just from watching this video. Keep up the good work that You do, it will pay off. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Kathy!
Omg I'm so old! When you said you were going to explain how you record all the tracks I expected to see tape 😂😂😂 This was really interesting.
Thanks!
Great video Fil, many thanks for the insight.
That was absolutely fascinating, and answered some questions I've had in the back of my mind since I started following you. Thanks for taking the time and effort to detail all of it. (I always thought your NT1000 sounded killer from the very first. I hope your new mic is at least its equal!)
Thanks!
Thanks Fil. Interesting. When i write a song it is opposite. But i am untrained! Love seeing your numbers build.
Very informative my friend Fil
Very valuable video.... thank you!
+1 on the Tele. And that NT 1000 is a gem. Thanks for the peek.
☺👍
Thanks Fil!!!
Thank you!
No problem!
Just caught up with this vid from Fil - have been enthralled by his "waveform" analysis ones of various artists - and have to state that so many of the comments from other people on here say ALL of the things that I would have said.
There are far too many attributes to mention but a couple for example:
Fil's dedication to explaining things for
~ people like me that have NO musical talent / no real knowledge of what a musical performance requires
~ Fil being able to break things down in such a way that is informative and interesting
~ His desire to "educate" us on those aspects that appear "magical" to us non-musicians
The list of these attributes for Fil is almost endless.
👍
👍
Thanks for doing this video. Very informative. You're creative and super organized. I hope you will do one about how you create your videos too.
Thanx buddy.....Fil u are talented
Thanks!
Although I am a lover of music I don't know much about the technical stuff. This was really cool & informative! Thanks Fil!🤘☮🎵
Interesting and informative
as always, thanks Fil...
"They don't make it anymore..."
I, along with every other musician I know, has uttered those exact words. I chuckled, in a somber way, when I heard you repeat that famous rant a number of times in the first minutes of the video. Yeah, I wish "they" still made lots obsolete gear.
Great explanations, take care!
☺👍
Not just musicians. Probably three or four of my favorite things have been discontinued.
@@DouglasJBender - True enough, I stand corrected!
