I watched Buddy Guy live at the Blue Note in Columbia, MO. almost 20 years ago, in the middle of a jam, guitar in hand he walked through the crowd, up a set of stairs and into the men’s restroom where he proceeded to jam for the people waiting in line to pee. Legend.

Yep. Walking the crowd, hunting as Michael said, I held the door to the women’s restroom open for him in a really small club in Marion, IA early ‘90s. And like noted, longest guitar cord ever!! I’ll never forget it. Dude is legendary in my book.

In fact, it’s awesome to know that thousands of people had the same experience that I had. Buddy is the ultimate showman. I’ll never forget him at the Blue note with his polka dot guitar, overalls, jehri curls, all sweaty and with that pearly white grin that never seemed to leave his face. I forgot to mention that we saw him on the street after the show, we hollered out at him and he looked up, waved and acknowledged us with a “Hey!!!” and that unforgettable Buddy Guy laugh. ❤️

I met Buddy in line at a Wendy's a few years ago. He was skeptical that I knew who he was, but once I said he's the guitarist that Clapton calls the greatest, he shook my hand and hurried out before I could go fanboy on him!
Buddy guy is a legend. Great skill on the guitar, great voice, and pure love and passion for the music and entertainment. Seeing him play puts a smile on your face.
The best blues show I’ve ever seen was Lefty Dizz at the Checkerboard in Chicago. Junior Wells and Buddy Guy were at the bar and sat in on all the sets. Buddy is a great showman, Junior was even better and Lefty was the best. On fire!
What makes Buddy Guy so great to me is you can tell he’s having fun entertaining everyone with his love for the music….and his wicked licks of course!! ✌🏻🎸
He's one of the few that have "IT"! The ability to have your brain and the guitar run as one solo machine and your heart and soul come out through the sounds it makes. You either have "IT" or you don't! God damn it's amazing!!
I live in Chicago and saw him dozens of times at his club Legends. Not only an outstanding guitarist but great guy. Would hang out before shows and always put in 💯.
I'm embarrassed to admit it, but this is the 1st time I watched a video of Buddy Guy in action. I'm really glad I did and thank you Michael for explaining some of his moves and why. I've heard his name in conversations many times, but never watched. Honestly he seems timeless as its been over many years I've heard his name. This time won't be the last. I can see pretty clearly how I can learn from him coupled with your lessons. Thank you for doing this Reaction.
Glad you found Buddy. He's arguably the last missing link between vintage electric Blues and modern Rock/Metal. He's 84 years young now so if you ever get a chance to see him live...please do. Even in his advanced years, Buddy Guy is still a major force when the house lights drop and the stage lights come on. 👊🏾
Ive seen Buddy 25 times we used to go to Chicago in the late 80's and 90's to see him at his club Legends. Many great memories there, meeting him at the bar, getting pics of him playing outside on Wabash to having Otis Rush walk by me one night. He is one of the last living Blues legends everyone should see him while he's still playing.

First saw Buddy in Birmingham UK in 1963, what a night that was. Backed by a young local blues band and he bowed to them at the end of his set, always a gentleman
"4K" is pure museum of blues, able to be seen and heard. And, I was actually there when Buddy was 2nd guitar for Muddy. Then I saw him move to the front. SO many nights as the only white,teen-age face in the place. I was at the back, way "after hours." Sometimes a beer would appear on my table. On "miracle nights," someone would invite me up front. Very good recordings and videos nearly make me cry and laugh at the same time. Thank you, Anthony and Michael, and of course, Buddy and Muddy, et al.
Had the opportunity to see him in a "private" birthday party concert. BEST night ever. He is a DON of Blues! Super insightful commentary once again Michael. Top marks...
I first heard Sweet Home Chicago at 8 years old because it was in the Blues Brothers movie. My intro to Blues. Best thing about Blues to me is that, you get a good player, and he will have Stank Face when they play. BUT, if they are REALLY good, you will get Stank Face just listening to it!
We go see him every chance we get. It’s basically the same show, but what a show! My favourite part is when he goes all quiet for a light passage and then you see him flip that volume pot to full, hear the amp hiss and you know he’s about to rip your head off!!
I saw him in a small club in Chicago, walked in without even knowing it was him until it dawned on me , it HAD TO BE the one and only..had planned on bar hopping, but found myself there into the wee hours. He was so open with the crowd and talking shit, it was a blast. I got his autograph somewhere in my collection.
I have been away in virtual Hawaii with Billy Kreutzmann and the Kids and Billy Strings. Billy picked up a *new* old Les Paul along the trip. Santana was the *secret* guest. Lots of GD songs and BMFS holding his own. I was most impressed by James Casey on Sax and Thomas Hamilton on guitar & vox. Full concerts are behind paywall, but two half hour *sneak peeks* for each of the three days. 💕🙋🎶🎶🎶

Buddy Guy shows, as well as some of SRV or Albert King ones, makes me think : Wanna see some modern blues guitar player with a tremendous energy and aura on stage and the hugest sound you've ever heard ? Check out Philip Sayce man (like the Silver Dollar show or the Maui Sugar Hill at LA). He took and learned from every great blues players and using it his own way.
My twin brother was recently the engineer on a recording of Buddy. And says he plays with such ease while ripping that it was unreal. Buddy has always been one of my favorites. Back when I was a little puck rocker he was the first blues player I found and it changed me and my playing forever.
excellent analysis...Ive always said what separates the pros from the amateurs is the use of the major notes 3rds 6 and 9 tones in the solos...buddy always shows this when he solos!!
I saw Buddy play "Europa" with Santana in 1996. After trading licks for a bit, Santana just shrugged, put his hands up, sat down and lit up a smoke to watch Buddy play the song! Buddy had so much charisma, it was like seeing Hendrix up there: complete mastery of himself, the instrument, and the crowd.
If you love blues guitar you owe it to yourself to see Buddy live. Absolutely one of the greatest entertainers I’ve ever seen. He’s 84 so don’t put it off! You’ll kick yourself if you don’t.
He has a club called "Legends" in Chicago. My guess is he plays there a few times a year at least. See him while you can! Willie Nelson, too. You'll never heard anyone else like them!

I’ve seen Buddy Guy twice and he’s always blown me away with his energy and spontaneous ability. His Bring Em In album with John Mayer, Santana and a bunch of others has become one of my favorites as well. Great video!
About that Diminished triad on the dominant seven, I usually call that the Pat Martino/Barry Willis chord. Pat had an entire instructional video on how to alter that in a jazz context.
Love buddy. Amazing guitar player,singer, entertainer and so humble. His other guitar player at this time I believe his name is Scott holt also killer player. I had a solo cd he made that has some great playing. I had a recorded vhs version of this buddy guy band from austin city limits I basically wore out from just Sitting down and learning the licks. I’m sure it’s on TH-cam somewhere I’d def search it out.
Buddy is an absolute legend! One of my absolute idols and I saw him as a teenager in the late 90's and he blew...my...mind! I talked to his keyboard player once named Tony Z and he was a SUPER nice guy. Scott Holt (that's him in this video) also used to be his rhythm player and I met him and had him sign a Strat once. He can burn it up as well and has an album from the late 90's that I HIGHLY recommend called Dark of the Night. He's an incredible singer too.

Saw Buddy many times (late 80's -early 90's). One time while tripping on Grateful Dead blotters, Buddy used my finger as his pick while on one of his wild-man Knock on Wood walkabouts! Ahhh, those were the days!
I believe the rhythm guitar player is Scott Holt. Not 100% positive, but the timeline of his career seems to suggest it. His look has changed quite a bit, but I think that's him.

Buddy Guy is the last of the great bluesmen. He is why I wanted to learn to play guitar. One of the best entertainers to ever step on the stage. Is it just me or do MP's fingers make anyone else thank of James Brown dancing?
Buddy Guy, Jimmie Vaughan and Charlie Musselwhite were the last show I saw before lockdown in Santa Barbara. Buddy may not shred it like he used to but at over 80 he hasn't lost anything in showmanship. I think they might have stopped their tour right after our show too.
Great as always, the instructional value in these videos are so high, the way you explain how things relate to theory (even if the artist maybe wasn't thinking about it at the time as probably the case here) is so valuable. One video that came to mind the other day that would be kinda fun if you did a react to is Roy Buchanan's "Backyard jam", which is really a clip from the PBS documentary. Keep up the great work and thank you for all the content you provide.

Thank you so much for the actual musical explanation. As a blues guy myself, I can give the stupid... don't know what I am doing version for the music dumb folks like me. I am often playing multiple scales when I play, not because I'm smart, but because I am dumb. Blues in Em I will play the blues scale in Em, Emaj , Am and Bm pentatonic. So I can play the minor blues box open, 5th fret 7th fret and 9th fret for an Em song. Same shape and I'm all over the neck. If you don't believe me, turn on a blues jam and try it. Combine it with the other shapes in all those scales and you're cooking with gas. If you ever hit a note you don't like, hit it again... then again. about time #3, you will love that note. I often do this with the blues note on the 5th's (Bm) blues box so in Em song the note would be F or b 6th? I don't know, but it can work.
I've seen Buddy 20 times both with Junior Wells and as a headliner. Clubs, festivals. I prefer his 80s tone using the Guild Starfire IV vs the Strat. Regardless, he has a stinging, wailing sound no matter what guitar he plays. The clip was a great showcase of essential BG. And Scott Holt is no slouch on second guitar!
I can only think of a few people who COMMAND the stage in a way such as him- Freddie King, Muddy waters, Albert King are a few that come to mind. Buddy Guy just has this sharpness about him, not only his playing. He's just an all around badass.
Don't you just get killed by the way he respects, but drives his band with looks, smiles, and occasionally speaking to them. When he "moved out front" in his Chicago career, he had learned that from Muddy--as a 2nd guitar for the "Man" he was a recipient of that praise and, really, fellowship. And you know that makes the band so glad and proud to be with him. They don't feel "second class" at all. They are playing for Buddy, but also the crowd. When I was in those clubs, I was just in heaven. I could be sprayed with and could smell the sweat from the people dancing; no space between them, or them and the band. On those "magic nights" I got sprayed by Muddy;s sweat, or Buddy's; maybe Dixon--damn near from the drummer or Otis Spann on keys. Some nights I was in agony from "swimmer's ear" but I could not leave; the additional pain was worth it. All of this in my young life instilled a sensation within me that I still carry.

The irony is that I can build a fine guitar; mostly acoustic, but also electrics. I only build OM's and slope shouldered dreadnoughts in acoustics. In the past, I have built LP 58-60 true replicas, like the one Slash and others actually play; their real "Bursts" are kept in vaults. (About 8-9 years ago, Gibson's lawyers got bored and sent C & D letters to my mentors so I stopped at 2.) I have one left. I need to bind it and get it "shot,: and I'll wire it up---maybe someday. I now build an LP Jr. style, but fully bound and very nice pearl of my choosing. HOWEVER, I have a younger brother who is a gifted bass and guitar (and more)player who made a great living as a bluesman; a band booked so well they took a 2 month vacation off the road. And, my nephew studied guitar (jazz) at Berklee and graduated with high honors(on campus). I gave both their first guitars. Neither would build or repair anything not just screwed on. Though I have played with difficulty since 1964, I am a Guitargate student, but afraid to start. I do not understand a damn thing Michael discusses in his reactions. I can roughly play acoustic, fingerpicked, Delta blues---purely imitation. I retired from 39 years as a major felony trial lawyer because of short-term memory loss. Imagine me trying to remember anything but straight I, IV,V.?

When he was home, as I was older, he would play blues and honky-tonk piano; only on the black keys. A co-worker taught me folk music on guitar, all classical form. I had not even heard of a "power chord" until a few years ago and I still don't know how to play even one. But, I can barre` all chords up the neck. As a result, I mostly play John Hurt---my left little finger worked pretty well. You seem like a real gentleman. I ended up making my home and career in Davenport, Iowa. My twin brother was recently the engineer on a recording of Buddy. And says he plays with such ease while ripping that it was unreal. Buddy has always been one of my favorites. Back when I was a little puck rocker he was the first blues player I found and it changed me and my playing forever.
excellent analysis...Ive always said what separates the pros from the amateurs is the use of the major notes 3rds 6 and 9 tones in the solos...buddy always shows this when he solos!!
I saw Buddy play "Europa" with Santana in 1996. After trading licks for a bit, Santana just shrugged, put his hands up, sat down and lit up a smoke to watch Buddy play the song! Buddy had so much charisma, it was like seeing Hendrix up there: complete mastery of himself, the instrument, and the crowd.

About that Diminished triad on the dominant seven, I usually call that the Pat Martino/Barry Willis chord. Pat had an entire instructional video on how to alter that in a jazz context.
Love buddy. Amazing guitar player,singer, entertainer and so humble. His other guitar player at this time I believe his name is Scott holt also killer player. I had a solo cd he made that has some great playing. I had a recorded vhs version of this buddy guy band from austin city limits I basically wore out from just Sitting down and learning the licks. I’m sure it’s on TH-cam somewhere I’d def search it out.
Buddy is an absolute legend! One of my absolute idols and I saw him as a teenager in the late 90's and he blew...my...mind! I talked to his keyboard player once named Tony Z and he was a SUPER nice guy. Scott Holt (that's him in this video) also used to be his rhythm player and I met him and had him sign a Strat once. He can burn it up as well and has an album from the late 90's that I HIGHLY recommend called Dark of the Night. He's an incredible singer too.

I saw Buddy in Birmingham, AL almost 20 yrs ago. Seriously one of the best showman I've ever seen. He took off through the crowd like a rocket & playing the whole time with his wireless cutting out and all. He didn't care.

Saw Buddy many times (late 80's -early 90's). One time while tripping on Grateful Dead blotters, Buddy used my finger as his pick while on one of his wild-man Knock on Wood walkabouts! Ahhh, those were the days!
I believe the rhythm guitar player is Scott Holt. Not 100% positive, but the timeline of his career seems to suggest it. His look has changed quite a bit, but I think that's him.

Buddy Guy, Jimmie Vaughan and Charlie Musselwhite were the last show I saw before lockdown in Santa Barbara. Buddy may not shred it like he used to but at over 80 he hasn't lost anything in showmanship. I think they might have stopped their tour right after our show too.

Great as always, the instructional value in these videos are so high, the way you explain how things relate to theory (even if the artist maybe wasn't thinking about it at the time as probably the case here) is so valuable. One video that came to mind the other day that would be kinda fun if you did a react to is Roy Buchanan's "Backyard jam", which is really a clip from the PBS documentary. Thank you so much for the actual musical explanation. As a blues guy myself, I can give the stupid... don't know what I am doing version for the music dumb folks like me. I am often playing multiple scales when I play, not because I'm smart, but because I am dumb. Blues in Em I will play the blues scale in Em, Emaj , Am and Bm pentatonic. So I can play the minor blues box open, 5th fret 7th fret and 9th fret for an Em song. Same shape and I'm all over the neck. If you don't believe me, turn on a blues jam and try it. Combine it with the other shapes in all those scales and you're cooking with gas. If you ever hit a note you don't like, hit it again... then again. about time #3, you will love that note. I often do this with the blues note on the 5th's (Bm) blues box so in Em song the note would be F or b 6th? I don't know, but it can work.

I've seen Buddy 20 times both with Junior Wells and as a headliner. Clubs, festivals. I prefer his 80s tone using the Guild Starfire IV vs the Strat. Regardless, he has a stinging, wailing sound no matter what guitar he plays. The clip was a great showcase of essential BG. And Scott Holt is no slouch on second guitar!
I can only think of a few people who COMMAND the stage in a way such as him- Freddie King, Muddy waters, Albert King are a few that come to mind. Buddy Guy just has this sharpness about him, not only his playing. He's just an all around badass.

Don't you just get killed by the way he respects, but drives his band with looks, smiles, and occasionally speaking to them. When he "moved out front" in his Chicago career, he had learned that from Muddy--as a 2nd guitar for the "Man" he was a recipient of that praise and, really, fellowship. And you know that makes the band so glad and proud to be with him. They don't feel "second class" at all. They are playing for Buddy, but also the crowd. When I was in those clubs, I was just in heaven. I could be sprayed with and could smell the sweat from the people dancing; no space between them, or them and the band. On those "magic nights" I got sprayed by Muddy;s sweat, or Buddy's; maybe Dixon--damn near from the drummer or Otis Spann on keys. Some nights I was in agony from "swimmer's ear" but I could not leave; the additional pain was worth it. All of this in my young life instilled a sensation within me that I still carry.

The irony is that I can build a fine guitar; mostly acoustic, but also electrics. I only build OM's and slope shouldered dreadnoughts in acoustics. In the past, I have built LP 58-60 true replicas, like the one Slash and others actually play; their real "Bursts" are kept in vaults. (About 8-9 years ago, Gibson's lawyers got bored and sent C & D letters to my mentors so I stopped at 2.) I have one left. I need to bind it and get it "shot,: and I'll wire it up---maybe someday. I now build an LP Jr. style, but fully bound and very nice pearl of my choosing. HOWEVER, I have a younger brother who is a gifted bass and guitar (and more)player who made a great living as a bluesman; a band booked so well they took a 2 month vacation off the road. And, my nephew studied guitar (jazz) at Berklee and graduated with high honors(on campus). I gave both their first guitars. Neither would build or repair anything not just screwed on. Though I have played with difficulty since 1964, I am a Guitargate student, but afraid to start. I do not understand a damn thing Michael discusses in his reactions. I can roughly play acoustic, fingerpicked, Delta blues---purely imitation. I retired from 39 years as a major felony trial lawyer because of short-term memory loss. Imagine me trying to remember anything but straight I, IV,V.?
@@jetobey5656 Brother, don't be so hard on yourself. The overwhelming majority of Blues guitarists don't know a lick of music theory, but that never stopped John Lee Hooker, BB King, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Albert Collins etc from being absolute icons as Blues players.

When he was home, as I was older, he would play blues and honky-tonk piano; only on the black keys. A co-worker taught me folk music on guitar, all classical form. I had not even heard of a "power chord" until a few years ago and I still don't know how to play even one. But, I can barre` all chords up the neck. As a result, I mostly play John Hurt---my left little finger worked pretty well. You seem like a real gentleman. I ended up making my home and career in Davenport, Iowa.
