Wow... that man can play!!!! such expression, a lesson in 'less is more',there are sections where Gary let the last note of a line sink in for 3 to 4 seconds or so, and it was not all fast all the time, wonderful playing. son enjoyable to listen to...

But your smile in this case is one of real enjoyment and respect from someone that you really enjoy . It shows a sense of awe in his playing style. It's great to see YOUR reaction to this performance. And yes I picked it up right away that Gary left his Peter Green 59 Les Paul at home and used a Fender Stratocaster just as Jimi would have done. Great, really great performance. Thank you for this.

In 1978, at the ripe old age of 19, I had tickets to a Rainbow show in El Paso, Tx. but it was cancelled. We didn't know about it until we drove the 165 miles of desert 2 lane in summer heat to El Paso, in anticipation of seeing Richie, Ronnie and Cozy blow the roof off the dump! Disappointed and chasing down a refund, we ended up at an outlet that wasn't able to give us our money back, but instead offered us tickets to a Kansas show. I wanted to know who was opening for them to see if it would be worthwhile. It was freakin' Thin Lizzy! I took that ticket. 2 months later we're back in El Paso. Thin Lizzy rips into 'Jailbreak' to open the set and there's no Robbo. But there was Mr. Gary Moore and Greeney. I couldn't believe I got to see a musician of that caliber playing such an iconic guitar all because a ticket outlet was short on cash. The guitar gods smiled on me as I'd seen Tommy Bolin 2 years earlier, then Rory Gallagher in '82. Sadly, I missed Randy Rhoads and I haven't seen Bernie Marsden yet, but I have tickets for my son and I to see Joe Bonamassa in March, so that will be 4 of my 6 favorite players. Me and Bernie are getting up there in age, but I really hope to add him to that list one day. But enough about me. As always, you did a damn fine job here, Fil. Now go find some Indigenous and analyze Mato Nanji for us. Great player.

Gary Moore, modern day guitar virtuoso, makes his instrument sing, whine, talk & cry. Only thing it couldn't do was get up and walk itself offstage. My fav is Parisienne Walkways with Gary & Phil Lynott. The way in which Gary wrote the song was otherworldly and he actually blew Phil off the stage in the performance. We miss Gary & Phil.

I think I would have to agree with your assessment of what Gary could make a guitar do, sing, whine etc. However one must give credit where credit is due and even though this guy is not on my top five list of great guitarists he must be acknowledged..... And that would be Roy Buchanan. When he wanted to he could make a guitar do just about anything that a human being could ever hope to do with that instrument. And do it well.

Just a small correction: Gary's next album after Still Got The Blues was in 1992 with After Hours, which contained classics like Story of the Blues, Separate Ways and Nothings The Same. It was interesting being a fan of Gary's blues playing, as like Fil my appreciation of his playing was solidified from his rock days with songs like The Loner, and even though I was starting to get into the heavier sounds of Pantera and Sepultura, I always had time for the unique expression of Gary's playing.

Coming of age musically in the ‘80s and worshipping at the feet of guitar gods like Hendrix, Page, Clapton, Beck, Gilmour, etc., I always regarded Gary Moore in that second tier of guitarists, along with Rory Gallagher, Mike Bloomfield, etc., more known for their guitar prowess than for their songs, per se, but then I “discovered” Thin Lizzy’s “Still in Love with You” about a decade ago and found Gary’s 2005 tribute concert to former band mate Phil Lynott in Dublin on TH-cam and was blown away. (You should review that here, Fil. th-cam.com/video/e2ffgZOab2k/w-d-xo.html) I immediately became a devotee, and, as soon as I finally came around to discovering Gary’s guitar brilliance, he died unexpectedly, just as Bradley Nowell (Sublime) and Mark Sandman (Morphine) did right after I finally found my way to them musically. What a tragic loss. But his music lives. Thanks, Fil.

Gary Moore was truly unique. He could go in full shred mode in the middle of a Blues solo without it sounding out of place or making it a formless stream of notes. His phrasing and his dynamics were just incredible. I'm a huge guitar music fan but I'm really not that into 30 minutes solos - except when done by Gary Moore, because he knew how to keep my attention the whole time and always giving me something new, something different, while at the same time being repetitive enough for it to be catchy.

When he walked out on stage with that Strat, I was "Whaaaaaa?". He nails every tone that the Strat is known for, lots of tribute to Jimi but still his own. Most other artists on the DVD do two or three songs for their set, but he just does one long version of Red House. And, as you mentioned...best Guitar Face ever.

Re personality coming through in the playing, Gary really muscles up as a guitarist; he gives it everything in his performances. Me, I'm not so much of a Blues fan so I prefer his more free-flowing songs like After the War, Speak for Yourself, Running from the Storm, Wild Frontier, Out in the Fields, Run for Cover, etc. He has some incredibly emotive melancholy non-Blues tones like on The Loner and Crying in the Shadows too.

I went with my twin brother and I'd always maintained that he missed Gary Moore when he went to the toilet, which he denied. So you can imagine my joy when on the video after Phil pauses it and it shows a wider view of the crowd you can see him coming back to his seat. Getting that kind of vindication doesn't come along every day :D.

Rory is in a class with Louis Armstrong, Pele and Muhammed Ali as Peace Makers. They each were able to perform their art but they insisted that there should be a ceasefire in the fighting. Rory always went to Belfast to give a Christmas concert and there was a temporary lull in "The Conflict".

By the way the full concert where Rory plays that version of Bullfrog Blues is still here on TH-cam. I do not want to get that taken down as well, so just search on YT for Rory Gallagher + Paris if you want to find it. It’s also in my playlists. Thank you for the Rory sax video.

OMG!! He was not messing around! If Hendrix, Clapton, and SRV were audience members, this would have demanded their full attention! Thanks Fil for yet another outstanding evaluation of what in the hell was going on with this madness!

Thanks for this video. If I have learned from your videos, this would not be classified under Easy Listening, but rather Slap You In The Face? I saw Gary in Montreux in 2000 on a hot July night. There was Smoke On The Water after the concert.

Great analysis Fil ! Yes, Gary played with such boldness and uncompromised wild abandon and he had so much expression in his playing . Very few, if any, could ever hope to live on stage with Gary Moore !

Fil, first Merry Christmas, and naturally thumbs up. I only include this because back a decade and a half ago, I had the opportunity to play with some fairly decent musicians. This was when the "band" was taking a break and letting some other folks (who all either played with or subbed in from time to time) play. The young fellow singing was 13 at the time. The other guitar player is his brother, as is the drummer. His father was playing bass, but I can attest is also a heck of a blues player. Hopefully my cut/paste/going to the right part come out right. If not, it is about 4:09 into the video. (And the young man became a guitar wizard by the time he was 18, and there is a locally famous video of him doing a church mission trip to New Orleans where Lenny Kravits overheard them and joined in, but I'll leave that up to you and your viewers to google up if interested.) Again, I hope you and everyone here is having a wonderful Christmas.

One of the all-time greats for rock and blues. Like Stevie Ray Vaughan exemplary musicianship is so off the charts it it’s just pure energy of extraordinary talent once in a lifetime player. Show me thank he plays over the top or seemingly self-indulgent when he plays for prolonged periods of times like this nine minute solo. But just think what we would miss if he decided to just leave two or three minute tracks behind it would be such a loss

Great video Phil, Gary is my all time favorite player. Did you know what is more amazing? Gary is actually left handed...Just amazing huh? "Moore suffered from the classic case of ‘right handed guitar as a gift’ despite being left handed. Now he’s one of the greatest blues guitarists on the earth."
