Look at the roster and all the money being spent on this team. Most fans think the nfl is a hardcopy, level playing field. But it's not really. When you have an owner like haslam that's willing to write big checks it gives you tons of flexibility and options with the cap that other teams can't do bc the owner is cheap.

The damage of that deal is going to have huge ripple effects for decades. Football is a collision sport and QBs go down all the time. Giving Watson that guaranteed deal started a domino effect. Quinn is right - that contract is like a trust fund. If Watson decides next year that he's not getting any better and he doesn't want to spend his old age taking arthritis meds he could just quit the sport, move to Thailand, and buy his own island. And Cleveland will still owe him every penny of that bad deal. Burrow ($219M), Herbert ($218M), and Murray ($189M) could all do the same thing. Not so much Mahomes ($210M) because he's already proven himself with 2 rings.

The biggest issue I have with the Watson contract is the ripple effect it had, the proverbial "poisoning of the well". Remember the Lamar Jackson contract debacle? Lamar was using Watson's contract as leverage, cause he wants a fully guaranteed deal like his too. If the Eagles had not righted this ship with the Jalen Hurts extension, we would be seeing more of this drama from not just Lamar Jackson, but guys like Justin Herbert, Joe Burrow, and Kenny Pickett once it's time for THEIR big boy contracts. Mercifully, asides Kenny Pickett, the names I mentioned already have their extensions (and none of them fully guaranteed), but I have to imagine teams are not happy with Haslam and his utter stupidity by giving that fully guaranteed deal in the first place.

  • @DanTheMeek
    @DanTheMeek 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

As a former 35+ year fan of the Browns (stopped rooting for them when they traded for Watson), I do think the end of this video isn't taking the Browns history into account.
What your saying they should have done, is what they did for the entirety of their existence, trying to find a young QB of the future in the draft, over, and over, and over, and it never working out. The browns had everything needed to be a contender short of a reliable QB, and while I personally think they could have won with Baker, there odds of winning were much lower then if they had a top 10 QB, which Mayfield was not. Could they have just traded their way back into the top of the draft to try to start the rookie QB experiment all over again? Sure, but as they'd learned time and time again, there are no guarantees in the draft, and they weren't looking to develop some one, they were looking to win while their window was still open. Watson looked, to most people's eyes, like a sure thing. The complaints about the trade were more about his character/crimes. Generational fans like myself left not because they thought Watson couldn't win, if we cared about that we'd have left decades ago, but because we didn't want to win at the expense of integrity.
So is this the worst trade in nfl history? It's certainly up there, particularly if you consider the contract they gave him part of the trade and not a separate terrible decision. But at the time, if integrity didn't matter to you, the trade and even contract made sense. He was a proven, consistent, super star, in his prime, playing the most important position in football, going to a team whose biggest roster hole was said position. He made FAR more sense then trying their luck with another rookie QB. The thing they didn't account for was the seeming existence of Karma.

  • @23Robusto

As a Houstonian, we thought we got The Guy in DW. The moment everything changed is when he got that first contract extension from the Texans. The massages, the girls, the lawsuits and trade demands followed. Now who knows whether his shoulder is really injured, or he just doesn't want to play. We are just glad he is someone else's problem now.

Who would have guessed Watson doesn't want to play when he signed a big contract with the Texans, a known poorly ran franchise, and then sat out because they when poorly ran. Guy threw himself out there even injured and found out the Browns were thinking of replacing him through the media. They didn't even bother to tell him it was a possibility before meeting with Watson the first time while he was rehabbing his shoulder. It's probably something that should be blamed on the Browns front office, but the fans are taking some of the flak for it as well. Which probably isn't fair, but it's what happens.

You're correct about how to structure a team. Gotta build that foundation first. Teams have got it twisted showing desperation. Desperation makes people do a lot of dumb things. Why would any team make a guarantee for 5 years? It's unrealistic unless you're a unicorn like Brady. Mahomes is locked in for 10 years even though most players hit a peak & start to decline. What about a very potential injury? Also, there's always someone new on the horizon. Just like the upcoming QB draft class. Overall, it's a horrible business decision. Not gonna talk about Murray, yet! Also, think there's something going on with Watson psychologically. Will & want to play? Maybe, because we also know he did not want to come to Cleveland. It's a big mess. Should be a lesson to other teams & owners.

They also traded their future success by trading a pile of picks. Finally, they traded away their good will by offering all of this to someone with the legal and PR issues that Watson has.
All this silliness was performed by a team who has failed with 33 consecutive starting QBs (in order to get rid of the most successful of those 33 QBs) in pursuit of a QB who couldn't save his previous team either.

16:56 This is *NOT* the pose you would be standing in if you have a rotator cuff injury! Personal opinion, and I think I've said this before, but the issue is that Watson doesn't want to be in Cleveland. When he was shopping himself, the Browns was the only team he said, out loud and on the mic, "No" to their offer. No one was certain where he'd go, but we all knew where he didn't want to be, and that was Cleveland.
Then the Browns made him a new offer, and Watson decided he couldn't refuse all that money because he had no hope of getting that money in any of the other locations he was interviewing with. Watson chose the money, and now he's miserable! Which is almost always what happens when a person chooses the money; they get misery. All Watson had to do was go with Atlanta or Carolina (as was suspected) for a couple years, played with some effort and desire that he isn't showing right now, and then get a new contract where he'd have the money he wanted. Nope. He chose to go to the place where he explicitly said "no" before. Idiot.

In sports, some people want to win, and others just want to make money. Not just players, but owners, coaches, GMs, etc. Dynasty's like the Patriots or Chiefs don't happen without the entire organization aligning with the goal of winning. That's why you have competitive players like Brady agreeing to team friendly salaries, or Aaron Rodgers desparately fighting recovery to get back to play this year. One selfish money-focused cog in the organization can ruin everything. Some organizations are especially screwed if that person is the owner, since that changes way less frequently.

Watson played at least 9 games a year inside a Dome every year as a Texan and then had a game in Jacksonville. If he got a first half of a season game against the Titans, then all he needed to worry about was 6 games every year as a possible weather game. Now every game is a possible weather game for Watson as a Cleveland Brown playing against the hardnose defenses of the AFC North with 2 Hall of Fame Coaches. IMO Baker is a better QB than Watson, a tough smart warrior.

I can't get over the phrase "fully guaranteed contract" he doesn't even need to play, he can get cut and they still have to pay him.

As a Texans fan was sad when he left but was happy for him Texans were a mess at that time thought he deserved better sucks to see that it kinda looks like he lost his love for the game

I’m 40. I remember my family’s MAJOR SB parties so I’ve been watching since I was a toddler. I watched SportsCenter before elementary school instead of cartoons. By the time I was 10 I went to my first live game and really started to understand the game. I’m 40 now; played fantasy since 2006 and followed the league and the Browns (I inherited CLE fandom) and I’ll be 40 in March. 3 decades.
The Browns are the worst franchise in the NFL. The only constant has been the owners. A lot of people may not know how much MEDDLING the Haslam’s do, that Jimmy is a convicted felon, and that Cleveland is football purgatory. Talent rarely flourishes there.
Cleveland Will continue to underperform until the Haslam’s sell, Watson is gone and the butterfly effect from his abhorrent contract is behind them, and they rebuild like it’s ‘99 all over again.
I’d even consider trading HOF LOCK Myles for capital.
This team will go nowhere until everything changes.
