  • Frogmouths are a kind of night-hunting, bug-loving bird that live in India, Southeast Asia, and Australia. They're very good at catching bugs and hiding and very bad at building nests. They mate for life and, in places where there are cars, they are very good at getting hit by them because they fly toward the bugs that are illuminated by headlights. Dangit.

      i find it hilarious when birds die from falls, its like finding a fish that drown or finding a cow that overdosed on grass. like intellectually i know its possible but since flying is kind of the thing birds excell at you dont expect them to die from falling.

    So when I was in Grade Six in Tasmania, Australia, an injured Tawny Frogmouth decided to start living outside my classroom window! It was a cute and amazing experience. He was eventually safely taken to a wildlife sanctuary and treated.

    Had a Tawny Frogmouth nesting in a tree out the front of my house once when I was a kid. Thought it was an owl for years.
    Repeatedly climbed close to it. Did not get sprayed with poop.

    Oh I love tawny frogmouths! Being Australian I’ve always known about them, I saw a wild one last weekend while camping! It was sitting on a tree branch and was all squashed down like it was trying to just look like a lump on the tree. They are rad birds

Within that time, I moved to Ethiopia, graduated high school, had some traumatic stuff happen personally, met Light, and now am a senior architecture student.     I have been carrying around a picture of this crazy-looking bird that I saw in an owl sanctuary in Japan. It did not look like an owl at all, but my Japanese is not good enough to ask what it is. I’ve been asking all of my friends and no one could tell me who this amazing bird was that looked like it was about to send me on a quest in a fantasy novel. IT’S A FROGMOUTH!

    They’re in the St. Louis Zoo’s birdhouse. St. Louis Zoo is free to visit all year round and is one of the top ranked nationally every year

      a _free_ zoo? that's insane. The local zoo here is city owned and it costs $23 for adults, there's a smaller private zoo and it's still over $15, and i dont even live in a big expensive city.

    We have a pair return to our property every year to nest. They pick the same broken off tree barely big enough for one adult. It takes a while to realise they have returned because they are so well camouflaged.

    In context of convergent evolution: there are birds called potoo that share a lot of traits with frogmouths, like huge eyes, nocturnal lifestyle and choice of prey.
    Also, they have excellent camouflage and have absolutely hilarious photos when googled.

    I became a fan of the tawny frogmouth while traveling in Australia. As you say, remarkable bird -- and I always loved that "look, I'm a log" pose that they used to avoid detection.

      I live in HK, was present at a random police action in my local area where there was no issue until the police turned up to intimidate the regular population and the whole body of citizens just turned right against them jeering and heckling. The HK Police are totally acting out.

    Tawny frogmouths are one of my favourite birds! I love that when they camouflage they have their beaks raised up and they just look so proud to be looking like a tree branch

    tawny frogmouths are legitimately my favourite animals! i fell in love with them after getting to hold one at a local animal park quite a few years ago. it was soft, auspicious, owl zen all rolled into this one amazing creature sitting on my fingers. i couldn't get over it! 😮

    Growing up in Australia, in primary school we learnt about Tawny Frogmouths and their branch imitating camouflage. They sometimes hang around street lights catching bugs that are attracted to the light.

    I petted one when I was a kid at a hands-on exhibit, and my life was CHANGED FOREVER. (Ok, maybe not really, but I still remember it 20 years later...so it was definitely awesome).

    I, too, LOVE the FROGMOUTHS! I love that they pretend to be wood when asleep. I love their giant eyes & mouths. I love that the babies look like unfinished muppets from Jim Henson. I, also, love potoos! Thank you for giving a shoutout to frogmouths, they rock & so do you!

    We had some in our backyard. They're awesome. They're definitely good at camo. They had a nest and a chick and sometimes we could spot them and sometimes we couldn't. Wonderful birbs

    This genus is so interesting and cute. I love their calls. I had opportunity to hold a potoo and thei feathers were the softest thing I have ever touched (not exaggerating)!

    I'm always so excited when I see a tawny frogmouth, because they're so damn hard to see!!
    I'm glad you let the world know about them, they're delightful!
    Also, at this time of year, any bird that doesn't swoop is a friend of mine!
