Can confirm, in Taiwan, we do call them that. Flipped car fish. I don't know why.
There was an event in 2002 at one of the coastal cities to sort of celebrate and raise awareness about the fish, but because so many people thought that going to such an event might bring bad luck (that it would increase the chance of getting into a car crash), few attended. They tried to change the name to something else (to "Mambo fish") but the "flip-car fish" name stuck.

It's so funny you call them sunfish because in German their name translates to moonfish (Mondfisch)!

It's also moonfish in Hungarian. I suspect one guy with his own travel accounts from the Pacific/Atlantic came back to Europe and dubbed it moonfish, and most everyone agreed to take him on his word that it should be called that way. Then translations were made, again without feeling the need to make a distinction.
Except for English. The English are strange.

I love these, i live near the Mediterranean sea, sometimes if you're on a boat and see a fin sticking out of the water, people panic, thinking it's a shark (good thinking, not taking any risks) but it's usually one of these guys, who are harmless ❤❤

The only time I went to San Francisco I also went to the Monterey Bay aquarium and saw the sunfish (it was in the huuuuuge tank with a few other big sharks and fish) but I had no idea it wasn’t a permanent resident! So glad I got to see it!

My first exposure to the mola mola was the Pokémon Alomomola, which is a pink water-type Pokémon shaped like a mola mola but also like a heart (it’s nickname is the “caring Pokémon” which I love very much)

Best lumpy magnificent bony fish. The first time I went out on my dad's boat, we saw one sunning itself off the coast and named the boat after it. I adore watching them sunbathe then suddenly shoot off into the deep!

Keep the fish stories coming. I used to love fish when I was young. I'd look at pictures of real fish for hours. No "See Jane Run" give me "Marine Life." No, I didn't become a marine biologist, I was just fascinated with the different forms of life in the sea. Still am. I love the Eons series.

Pokémon showed this weird fish some love in the Black and White games with the introduction of Alolamalola. This Pokémon in lore is an affectionate motherly figure that protects people and other Pokémon from dangerous jellyfish. Game mechanic wise, it’s a bulky water type that can heal itself and allies. In other words, it’s hard to kill.
