  • A ghost track resurrected!, we got to visit and drive historic Lake Garnett Raceway, in Garnett, Kansas! We were able to drive this otherwise abandoned race track thanks to the efforts of a small team who put together the Lake Garnett Grand Prix Revival, an annual event celebrating the racers, race cars, and history surrounding this former professional road racing event. We feel privileged to have driven in the tire tracks of some real legends and to have at least gotten a taste of what it might have been like to race here back in the 50s, 60s, and 70s.

    Born and Raised in Garnett, my Grandpa Kenny helped organize the first Grand Prix to be held at Lake Garnett.

      That's awesome. Definitely takes a lot of work to organize any professional sport, nevermind one that's going to bring in 10x the population of the town in spectators on a given weekend.

    Born and raised in Garnett, I lived there throughout the run of the Lake Garnett Grand Prix. I clearly remember the "race riot" that contributed to the demise of the event. I have been around the lake countless times but never "at speed". Many thanks for a great video. Rhoads E. Stevens, MD Honolulu, Hawaii

    This is a beautiful town. I’ve had the opportunity to visit the track and race on the small kart track in 2019 & 2020. Really is a stunning place in a small but lovely Kansas community. It feels weird to visit a place ran by legends like Ken Miles and Dave MacDonald, names from the past that should be remembered for the years in the future.

    A really great video. Thanks for coming all this way and spreading the work about the Lake Garnett Grand Prix. Though we did not meet as I was working the autocross on Saturday, I hope to see you there again. Next time you can run the autocross on Saturday and the track on Sunday when there are a lot more track cars.

      We'll keep that in mind! I was an autocross regular for years with our local SCCA region. Never did any national events given my cars have always been class orphans. Still love dodging a few cones when I can make it out.

    I have an in-progress version of the historic track in Assetto Corsa that I've been working on on-and-off for about a year, in between other projects. In a fairly-accurate 427 S/C Shelby Cobra, Welda Corner is a slight lift to keep the car from running wide on exit (and subsequently going airborne over the railroad tracks), and then you are nearly at redline in 4th by the time you hit the braking point for the haybale chicane. If you do go off, the drainage swales on either side of the road ensure that recovering is not going to be straightforward affair. I'm not at all surprised that a few competitors ended up in the lake during the event's original run.

      I believe I found some video of your work in progress. Looks good so far! I always try to find a sim mod to practice/memorize the layout in advance. Definitely post back once it's finished!

    • @LapoftheWorld

      Definitely a fun experience! There was a"food truck" style setup with a couple of bbq options near the paddock area. There was I think a taco truck over near the spectator area.

    I really love these ghost tracks you find as you travel around. I'm wondering if there will be a cascade effect as this event will lead you to another, and another after that somewhere else in the country. We can only hope!

  • @daytona5.722

    Awesome video! What a unique track, would have been terrifying at speed. They would have been doing 150ish for sure on that straight, I hit 148mph on the 4700 foot straight on the 3.1 mile course at BIR. I would like to attend this event sometime.

    • @LapoftheWorld
      @LapoftheWorld  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's definitely a nice way to spend a weekend if you get down that way! ...and yeah, I'm not sure I'd have wanted the pressure of competition or money on the line when trying to push a car around a de-restricted version of this course. As cool as it is to imagine having a race or open track day at some of the old road/street courses you definitely can see where modern safety standards are necessary to keep the hobby/sport/everyone-involved alive.

    thank you for sharing such great content ! I mean, LotW is probably my favourite NSX youtube channel, and not only for the NSX things I learn, but for nice stories like these. Very interesting ! We also have some ghost tracks like these in France, and some revival events. I hope to attend one someday with my black nsx too.
    Btw, I just noticed you have a Nordschleife racetrack sticker, did you really make it to this track with your NSX ??

    I love these 'lost' racetrack videos so much. Keep up the great work. In the drone shots, there looked to be a smaller track on the property as well. Is that for karting?

    • @LapoftheWorld
      @LapoftheWorld  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the small track is a go-kart track. I have also since learned that they still occasionally run actual races with 125cc karts on the full circuit. So it's 'lost' to cars, but not necessarily to all racing. I'd still be super sketched about yeeting myself across that dam in a kart though, lol

  • @BennHerr
    @BennHerr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Not really an "Abandoned" race track, it's just that the car guys weren't able to figure out a way to run on it for a long time. The Road Race kart guys have been racing there many years. Not on just the small Sprint track, but a couple of times a year on the big one. th-cam.com/video/vb5DvqDpZw8/w-d-xo.html

    I moved to Eugene Oregon a few years after Oregon Raceway was closed, thanks to a crappy asphalt job that fell apart, and that corrupt courts let the rotten pavement stand as a 'good job'. Quite a number of times, sports car drivers were able to break in and carefully take a lap or two. Sadly, I was not among them. Shortly after then the site began to be buried in garbage, and is today known as Short Mountain Landfill.

    • @LapoftheWorld
      @LapoftheWorld  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wasn't aware of the story behind it's closure but we considered driving by the site when we were recently out in Oregon. Unfortunately we took a different route back home so that one will have to wait a bit longer to see if anything recognizable is left there.

    • @LapoftheWorld
      @LapoftheWorld  ปีที่แล้ว

      The android version of RaceChrono Pro. Not sponsored but I've tried a few and it's the best phone app I've found. Track addict is a close second.

    • @pizzasubs
      @pizzasubs ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LapoftheWorld thank you so very much for responding to my message really do appreciate it if you don't mind me asking does rice krono is it good enough to be able to use for Auto Crossing or is it just good enough to be used for track events I have been trying to use track addict for a number of seasons but unless I just do something wrong in the setup I never can get it to work right and that's over two seasons worth

    • @LapoftheWorld
      @LapoftheWorld  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pizzasubs Race Chrono Pro can be set up for point-to-point. For autocross you'd probably want to tie it to an external GPS of 10hz or more though since time margins are much thinner vs. on a road course. One reason I don't use Track Addict is that it would have inexplicable GPS signal loss, or rather it didn't handle signal loss very gracefully where Race Chrono (and Harry's) seemed unaffected.
