  • After fractional distillation, we need to redistill each fraction with simple distillation process. In previous video, we separate Acetone from Water via fractional distillation. Now we will simple distill Acetone and dry it with anhydrous magnesium sulfate. Watch full video.

    what a nice flask funnel

MgSO4 is my favorite dessication agent. It can get stuff extremely dry if given a bit of time to work. You can preserve dehydrated stuff indefinitely if you add a small packet of anhydrous MgSO4. Easy to make it too. Just put epsom salt in a shallow glass or metal baking pan and roast it in the oven at about 500 deg F till it looks a bit like styrofoam. Crumble and jar it up.❤

Also my favorite too. I already make a video on dehydrating MgSO4 at 500 Degree F.

Would a 3A molecular sieve be not only more efficient but also reusable as the last drying step?

Why use heating , why not boil acetone under vacuum? its much safer. Thank you anyway for this video.

I have best apparatus. I know Acetone has low flash point. Vacuum distillation used to distill high boiling point liquid. Under vacuum you cannot collect acetone. and cannot get high purity due to uncontrollable negative pressure.
      This is my personal experience.
      Thank you dear.

Can these round bottum flasks withstand high vacuum?

Yes. Soon I will upload video of vacuum distillation.

Does that filter get all the Magnesium Sulfate out? Are you doing the distillation first to avoid using more MgSO4?

Before distillation the fraction contains more water. So first I minimize water with simple distillation and then use Magnesium sulfate to completely dry the acetone. Magnesium sulfate is insoluble in acetone and also I am using qualitative filter paper. Sometimes you can use dehydrating agent before distillation.
