Extremely powerful. I love watching poets who really feel the words they are saying and Desireé will forever be one of my favorite poets.
When you can make someone who has no way to relate directly to this tear up and truly feel your words, you know you're talented. This is an absolutely stunningly beautiful poem written about a heartbreaking situation.
That was actually so powerful, she loves her brother for the man he is and not for the thing he's done, beautiful 👏
Dear God, that hit hard. My name is Desiree; I am called Desi. I have an older brother named Michael who thankfully is not in prison, instead he works in one and I hear the other side of the story. Incredible poetry... I love this girl's honesty.
"there are not enough district attorneys to convince me that the man who taught me how to ride a bike is meant to spend his life in a cage."
"When he tells you that a man should never put his hands on you, believe him.
When he pushes his girlfriend down the concrete stairwell, believe him."
wow.
I love this poem. To me it is an example of the importance of poetry. Desireé mentioned how people in similar situations are often clumped into groups, masking the pain of each individual human being, including the feelings of their families. Through poetry we gain insight on the personal struggles and emotions we all face, which not only gives us reason to respect each other but also reminds us of the simple fact that we are all humans who feel and breath and love.
Desiree will always be my favorite poet. She delivers her lines with emotion and you can feel her pain.
Wow so RAW. even if you look no further than the tones she speaks in there is SO much raw beauty, just there. Real Rhythm
This hit so close to home. I cried, reminisced and felt all sorts of other emotions. She literally gave me chills. Chills. Like only Jasmine Mans or Alysia Harris has...Chills. She's amazing!
This is wonderful. I can feel, see, and hear the emotion. Never have I ever been more honored to find someone I share a name with!
You know someone is an amazing writer when you tear up listening to their words because you can feel the pain they are trying and succeeding to convey.
Every time I listen to this my entire body gets goosebumps. Beautiful Poem x
I can relate with my cousin who was basically an older brother.. Never have my feelings been expressed so perfectly until now. Beautiful.
So much power in less than four minutes. I can relate to this with my father and boyfriend. Desiree is so spot on thank you for putting my thoughts into words as well as your own. One love
Real actual chills. I love her so much.
Beautifully said.
I can feel your agony, because I know this pain, I'm experiencing this love (on a more intimate level though).
7 years now.
For him? I'd wait well past the expiration date of infinity.
He's a hard Man because of his hard life.
For me?
He's my "cognitive thinking" therapist (long story short: large cyst removed from my spinal cord). He is the TOP one (of a crowd of very few) in my cheering section. He is my therapist. He is the rational side of my brain. He keeps me balanced.
He does protect me. How?
He helps me feel secure in life changing decisions I make. He helps guide me through the pain of being a birth-mother/friend to my child, and nothing more. He has walked me through so many storms. . .
If it hadn't been for his kindness, understanding, patience, up beat and positive outlook on life or his acceptance, gentleness and unconditional love, I'd be a permanent resident in a behavioral health ward somewhere.
Thank you for having the courage to share your experience. It truly helps.
I appreciate you much
💜
re-watched this, I cried just like I did the first time.

"Bake cookies. Fly kite"
So crazy the things you missed tht are commonplace.
Absolutely profound. Helping others feel what we can't experience through words over a microphone. Love love love
really hits close to home for me. words....
awesome poem.
never disappoints. absolutely love her and her words.
I come to these poems when i need comfort
Sometimes, you can hear the poetry in a person’s voice. The unsung song of a bird in the breeze and honey dripping in the sunset. Another example of a poet with a poet voice, “When A Boy Tells You He Loves You”
She's amazing
This made me think a lot. Thank you.
