      My favorite was having the sun behind the subject with a reflector in front. The still photography teachers of my youth told us to have the sun in front of the subject so I always tried to do that. Great instructional video!

    *I find that the ND Filter is most helpful for me as I'm a solo creator and when vlogging Its a pain to have to mess with the shutter speed or the aperture, BUT ND Filters are much more simpler for me, so I'll be using those more *

    What I use instead of a regular 5 in 1 reflectors is checkerboard reflectors , they are so sweet it's like having your light at 4300k because of the silver and golden on the same side instead of a only golden bounce or only silver bounce

    Oh Sam, as you know I am currently binge-watching your entire channel and I'm loving it. But I would desperately love to get you up to Scotland (when it's safe) to try and get these gorgeous results on a gardening vlog type situation.
    I film on my own and do the gardening and present etc, I have to contend with weather, time, urgency, only getting to do something once, not able to set up diffusers and reflectors etc because it interferes with actual gardening etc. Is there just no hope for me? :)
    Thanks again, I am absolutely loving this content and it's nice to hear it in such a friendly voice with a normal accent (not Hollywood) :)

    Some great old school tricks and tips here but some are only any use when you have a few helping hands to hold stuff. Taking a stand sounds like a no brainer but you'll either need a heavy C-Stand of sand bags. Or the wind will remind you why. If you're working alone remember who will be carrying all this extra stuff. That's right. YOU. If you work alone primarily there are some things you can do. You can take a look at the sky on a cloudy day before you start shooting and make a choice. Am I shooting for cloud or clear sky? Meaning do you think it will be mostly cloudy today or mostly clear. The just make sure you only shoot on one or the other but never both. When the sun goes behind cloud or when it isn't. One or the other. You'll at least have consistency then without the extra equipment. the other tip is to reframe whenever possible if the sky in the background is becoming an issue. Try not to allow the sky to fill more than say 10% of the frame. that way if it blows out completely it's no biggie. You'll find if you expose for the subject then it will still work because the difference in luminance between the subject and the earth and buildings etc are pretty similar and within the tolerance of you camera's dynamic range. It's the sky's luminance that throws you under the bus. The other thing that will catch you out is "mid-day". Do not film at mid day in the middle of the summer if you can help it. shoot much earlier or much later if you can and save yourself the hassle.

  • @cbmtrx
    @cbmtrx 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I always thought having the subject facing the sun was "good lighting"...yeah no. For one-man setups doing outdoor interviews I'm thinking about how to use an easy diffusor+stand setup so I don't have to hold it but it's also mobile...hmm.

    Those were some great tips - thanks Sam! I was filming interviews outside yesterday and the sun was going from ultra bright to behind thick clouds so I found it almost impossible to expose the shot. I'm relatively new to film work so still learning, I don't use any auto settings and shoot in CLOG so auto ISO isn't even available on my camera in LOG. Have you got any tips for exposing a continuous interview when the sunlight is changing so dramatically throughout the scene?

    • @SamHolland
      @SamHolland  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Anthony. So pleased this helped you.
      What camera are you using? You should still be able to control your iso.
      To be honest, we kind of have to do the best with what we have. Dynamic range is a big one. Try and get the exposure as best as you can do it’s not blown out at its brightest point and use diffusion where possible. If you have a high dynamic range camera, you should still be able to bring back the detail in the shadows.
      The Sony FX6 has an auto ISO feature which looks amazing. Super handy for this sort of thing. But if not, just try and follow this video best you can 🙏🏻
      You could use a light meter

    • @antg22288
      @antg22288 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SamHolland thanks for the reply Sam! :-) I’m shooting with an EOS R. It only lets you do auto ISO when not filming in LOG which is annoying. I’ve always wondered if auto ISO would actually expose very well though. I’m still learning a lot to be honest! I’ll definitely get some diffusers/reflectors for next time! 👍🏼

    How do you expose for the background?

    • @SamHolland
      @SamHolland  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. Basically make sure your background isn’t over exposed or under exposed (too bright or too dark) a monitor can help you see the exposure.
      Hope this helps. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻🤩🎥

    someone please help i want the sun to directly lit my actors il use an opal diffusion..bcz i have a wall behind actors nd it makes interesting shadow pattern, or if i backlit my sub with sun no more shadows on the wall can i put a artificial light to get shadows on wall will that screw up lighting continuity like ppl think they are backlit where are shadows coming from on the wall ?

    Why shouldn’t you change shutter speed to make it faster to lower the exposure? Does shutter speed need to always stay at double the fps, it seems that making shutter speed faster lowers exposure or is it ruining the image also?

    • @SamHolland
      @SamHolland  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. You can do it but it changes the motion blur. Double the frame rate usually gives the most natural motion blur. 🙏🏻🎥

    What's the best video light to use outside against the sun

    • @SamHolland
      @SamHolland  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. Something with high output to compete against the sun and maybe bi-colour so you can match the Kelvin temperature of the natural light. Hope this helps 🙏🏻🎥

    question - is it ever worth taking a light out to shoot with - for example if you bring your subject into shade, would the ML60 with some reflectors and an led panel or Pocket LED light as hair light be a feasbile solution?

    • @SamHolland
      @SamHolland  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you can do that. It will give you a certain look. It all depends what you’re going for and if you have the money/time/equipment, and help. But yes it’s an option 🤩 thanks for watching 🎥🙏🏻

    Hey man, I got a question... 2:58 how would you expose for the background (sky) when i don't have a reflector/anyone else with me to hold it? So, like, totally "run & gun style" and some scenes I want to show my subject with the sky in the background and have the entire scene properly exposed? I do use ND filters, but always seems to either blow out the sky or blow out my subject. Hope that makes sense? Maybe you've already answered this and I might just have to watch this video again, but thought I'd ask 🙏🏼

    • @SamHolland
      @SamHolland  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. It could come down to the dynamic range ability of your camera. If you’re camera has a high dynamic range, you’ll be able to have both the highlights and the shadows exposed well. Have you got a log profile on your camera?
      Thanks for watching 🙏🏻🎥🤩

    • @scorpisces182
      @scorpisces182 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SamHolland hey, thanks for getting back! I totally forgot about the camera itself haha! I've only got the Canon M50, but I have installed C-Log on it. I watched your video a couple times, you explained it really well. I'd say my issue is probably a combination of the camera and "user error" haha. I'll def reference this video next time I take my camera out

    • @SamHolland
      @SamHolland  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s cool. The m50 is a great little camera but yeh, you won’t get the best dynamic range from that camera, even with c log unfortunately HOWEVER. If you follow the steps in the video, you will get better results 🤩🙏🏻 also if you turn the contrast down in camera, you might have a little more luck. Hope it helps 🎥

    When you said to use a diffuser, do you mean with the sun in front of the subject, rather than behind?

      Yeah, the diffusion would go in between the subject and the sun.
