Sitting in my bunk at a truck stop in Pennsylvania, eating a late lunch and watching this video. Lol. When I was a teen in the 1980s, my sister and I were two Black girls in Augusta, GA, who memorized much of the dialogue and music from The Coal Miner's Daughter. We love Loretta (and Dolly and Patsy)! Thanks for taking me along a route I couldn't get through in my truck.
It would have been awesome to have grown up in that house, with a big family, and lots of music, but most of all lots of love. I grew up in a old house, just a county away. It was a 4 room house, I'm the youngest out of 9, plus my parents. We had a open well, by the house, that we drew water from, for everything needed for the house. We had a ringer washer, big tubs to rinse our clothes, and hang them on a clothes line. I was raised old school I guess you could say. But they were some of the best days of my life. We had our share of bad times, but we were loved. We raised gardens, cows, pigs, chickens. I miss those days, growing up. My parents passed away years ago, and 3 of my brother's, and numerous other family members. I like that song I'd like to go back there. Precious memories. Thank you for sharing. God bless you all. I know years ago. A friend of mine took me up there to see Loretta Lynn's home place, they were closed. I saw it from a distance. This is the closest I've been to it. Once again thank you.
I loved watching this so much! My dear friend Sandy lives in Alabama, and it looks so similar. I lived in Kentucky back in the 70’s and it was a wonderful place too. I’m from Michigan and there’s a big difference between people in the south and north. Just about everyone is friendly and seems happier. God bless your he south✝️☮️
Marcia I'm too from Michigan, grew up here my whole life I am now 63 years old. My mom was from Kentucky Lawrence County, my Grandad and Grand Mommy live right in Louisa hop-skip-and-jump from Dee's Drive-In. Marcia reason why I'm texting this is because I so much agree with you how people are so different from the North and South, there's so much friendlier you're not afraid to put your hand up and wave at somebody passing you up on the road here in Kentucky, in Michigan you never see that. I have very few relatives now living in Louisa, but I took friend of mine on little trip to Louisa because she always heard me talk about it. Driving through town and walking and looking at things the way they used to be and the way they are now is a big difference. I know everything changes in time, but this time I wish it would stay just the way it was. It seems to bring a little tear in my eye right now even talkin about it because I miss it so much and miss my mom I lost her 2011. Sure wish I had my mom back. Well I don't want to keep on boring everybody if you do read this but just wanted to rephrase again kentuckians are the best, God bless you all. Jim
So sorry for the loss of your mom. I lost my dad last year but still have my mom. It is hard when you lose a loved one, just keep pressing onward and make them proud....

At 25:19, the picture in the wood frame is of my great grandma, Loretta and a few friends! My grandma is the tallest one in the picture. Her daddy was a minor and that’s how the two met. Her name was Betty Jennings, before she passed she always told us stories of her and Loretta growing up together. I’m so happy to see that there’s a picture up in the house.
So lucky to have been able to film this. When we went to visit, Herman was there also but didn't allow us to take any pictures or video. It was over 20 years ago so I suppose the blues have changed by now. They were very polite and friendly it's sadly we have no video to prove it. My mother actually grew up not far from there and had spoken to Loretta several times at concerts and such. The whole family is just lovely.
This is a great tour to Loretta Lynn's home place in butcher holler. I might take that tour one day myself! It comes up on Google! It's only a seven-hour trip from Atlanta. I Love her story and how no body gave her anything. This is what America is all about. Came from humble beginnings to become a legend. This is one of the greatest things I've ever seen! I've seen coal Miner's daughter probably a hundred times and can quote just about every part of the movie. I've got to be Loretta Lynn's number one #1 black fan and proud of it. Thank you for this video I will probably watch plenty of times until we make that trip one day. We're big fans.

This was such a wonderful watch - I'm feeling so nostalgic! I remember taking a trip down to Kentucky years ago with my grandparents and we visited Loretta's childhood home. Even though I was too young to cherish it in the way I would now, I still remember the little fan in the dining room and the horse I was gushing over in her yard. Thank you tons for this post, I feel like I'm reliving it all over again.
I sure hope they get fund raising for upkeep.... because the ceiling looks rough......we need to preserve history like this ..... Loretta was true country and such a beautiful woman.

Those winding roads and all the greenery looks so beautiful. When I go back to the town where I grew up in Puerto Rico almost identical. A lot of hills and beautiful landscape and the people are the most humble nicest people you’ll ever meat. I love it. Big fan of Loretta

Reminds me of my grandparents house in upstate NY.....the wallpaper and that door to the upstairs looked just like theirs...with the little step and everything.
I only live about 30-45 minutes from paintsville Kentucky! I’ve talked with her family and yup of course toured the homestead! I live up in the hills in a holler too! Peace and quiet and beautiful view up in our hills! Glad you guys enjoyed your trip!
I am in my seventies and have lloved Lotetta and her family for years. We traveled to Butcher Hollow three times. The house and all around it has changed since the first time there. Concidering how the road is now I would conciider it paved.. we hit brush the whole way in both sides of the car. There were heaves in the road. The house was sitting alone in need of repair. Next time it had been newly done over in bat n 'board. Third time it looked as it does now with the mini museum. We got a flat tire and Loretta's brother helped us out. Memories.
my husband and I live in KY...took a drive to her childhood home...was amazing...walked through her house and sat on front porch with her brother and talked to him about their childhood and the movie...he was a very nice man and was happy to talk about their life...best trip ever
I grew up listening to Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty, Merle Haggard and so many other great country music artists. Frankly, it's the only country music I truly enjoy...the old stuff. It touches the soul. Thank you for this video. I enjoyed seeing the beautiful scenery and seeing the old homestead of the Webb Family. It was a wonderful idea on your part.
I traveled all the way from Northern Maine just to come see Butcher Holler!!! I would do it again in a heartbeat!!! I have loved Loretta's music for as long as I can remember!!! My grand mother always told me that as a baby I would get fussy but as soon as she played some Loretta I would calm down and just start smiling!! Love you Loretta
My cousin Richard Hitchcock his wife made all the quilts for the movie that Sissy Spacek played in Miner's daughter she played Loretta Lynn. We went down to web store Loretta's Brothers little grocery store we went in we talked but we never got to go inside the Loretta Lynn's homeplace thank you for putting it on TH-cam I sure appreciate it... Man ! makes me wish I'd went in that house.
I went down that road to the old cabin. I met Loretta's brother that day about 7 years ago....at the time the old Van Leer coal company store was the local Post Office, and one of her niece's was the Post Master, she came to the cabin to check up on her Daddy and we got to meet her....she looks just like Loretta...

It was really cool to see Loretta's childhood home. But I was under the impression they were poor. Better home than some folks today have. A gas powered washing machine is better than none at all. Many people today don't have a washing machine. Plenty of room in that old house. Looks as if they were comfortable. Beautiful place. Beautiful country. And the people seem to be down to earth. Great job on the video. Reminds me a little bit of West Virginia where I'm from. Thanks.
Well I am double blessed today with this touching video and learning something new. In searching for a long lost relative's family (Richard Robinson), I come to realize from a newspaper clipping of his death (by a train accident, which he lost both legs), that it all happened right here in the area where one of my favorite country singers, Loretta Lynn Webb was born. Strangely enough, back in the late 1970's or early 80's, I went with a friend to this area where Loretta was born, not knowing the connection of this area to this relative. I love your video and it brought me back the second I saw the house she grew up in, though I never got to go inside. I was born in McDowell Co WV, so I know how the country roads are in the south, and actually though they were not bad at all compared to some I've seen recently in WV. Thank God for some paving here and there and making them thar roads a tad wider. lol Takes that nervousness out of me just a little. Anyway, again thank you for sharing this wonderful laid back video with us and taking us on the road with you. PS, if anyone in this area ever heard of the name Robinson I mentioned and had heard a story back in the day about this man (Richard Robinson), a coal miner of Van Lear, who, on his way to the post office in Jan 1921, tried to hop the freight train, loosing both legs and takin to Paintsville hospital where he died at 9:00 PM, please contact me at sheilajordan79@yahoo.com. Richard was my mom's father-in-law, and he had brothers Warren, William and Henry. Richard was married to Ruth Dawson. They had young children when he died, Warren, Willie and Shirley who was mom's first husband and father to her first 6 children. I have been searching a long time for Richard's parents and siblings. Thank you for this video. My Aunt Bea Meade lived on the corner just above the Van Lear post office...only the foundation of her home remains. As a child in early 1950s we LOVED going to Iggy's store for some pop and maybe a popsicle. My grandmothers home was further up the road, past the school (which I attended in 1952). My mother was Helen W. Meade, Van Lear high school class of 1938. U.S. Army nurse in WWII. Tks for the memories; I have downloaded and enjoy in my old age.

VERY IMPRESSIVE! It's a true testimonial to old fashioned country values them Mr. Webb was able to raise 8 children to successful careers with so little. Especially Loretta and Brenda Gail. He must have been an incredible man, and her mom, wow, what a woman!

Well they was down right well-to-do for hill folk. Loretta grew up in a lovely country home with all the modern conveniences it seems. Stoves, fireplace , big front porch with a swing, great cook stove, washing machine, land of their own, plenty of bedrooms for everyone. Before I got married at the ripe old age of 13 , I remember visiting my grannies house and actually being able to peek through the walls in places. Granny also had many holes (windows) that only had screen in summer and plastic in winter , with a shutter that one had to go outside and pull the stick out to let it down for closing it; We had the convenience of lard buckets to sit upon and coffee cans to use in the winter when we didn't want to go out to the outhouse , two wood stoves, and a fine root cellar. Of course , my grandparents were only share croppers and had no land of their own or a fine miners job to make ends meet on a regular basis. I would say Loretta has been very very blessed all her days. Love me some Loretta. God Bless Doo for having the sense to get her out of the holler so the world could meet and enjoy her and her beautiful voice.
It's all a matter of perspective, but I too was struck by how nice their house seemed...a little slice of heaven. When I was young, (raised in Arkansas), I learned every word to every Loretta song, lol, kind of risque for a 6 year old to be belting out 'Don't Come Home a drinkin'...so to this day, I have a Loretta song for every occasion. My daughter just had her 2nd baby with a not yet 2 year old at home, so I of course had to send her the lyrics to, 'One's on the way', ...Love this video.

I agree they lived high on the hog compared to my Oklahoma sharecroppers grandparents. junk board was used to cover holes in walls.I wonder if she re did her parents home as she made money and became well to do.

Have heard Loretta as well as Dolly Parton say that they could relate to each other completely, as they both grew up in very similiar conditions. These ole mountains have turned out a great bunch of God-fearing folk.

I'm absolutely blown away after watching and seeing this Historic Home of Miss. Loretta Lynn whom my father used to play her songs where I grew up in St.Clair Shores, Michigan back in 1968 when I was 10 years old my folks played her songs and other Country hits, the kids would say to us, your family is Greek why do you all play country music? people are funny that way I guess, we Loved Country in our house my father was a musician and he loved it all !! I ALWAYS wondered what "Butcher Holler" meant and where it really was !! and now I know.....what an amazing peace of History.....WE LOVE YOU LORETTA !!! My Grandparents had the first brick house on the Lake St. Clair. ( moved it from Dettoit) All my Aunti's and cousins now live in St. Clair Shores. ..Great Childhood memories too.

My sister has since passed so thank you for sharing this it brings back so many memories or our Loretta Lynn, Elvis (Graceland) then the whole Washington DC trip. I went there on Easter Sunday one year. Herman himself gave us the tour. I wrote a paper for an Appalachian Literature class at Northern Kentucky University. We took a random dirt road on the way out of the holler and it ended up at Loretta's parent's grave site !

I grew up along this very road (302) along with my friends cousins and lot of good people. I've lived in Cincinnati for a long time now and don't get back there much. Thanks so much for posting this. Saw both of my grandmother's houses (both now deceased) and it brought back lots of memories. so glad to have grown up in this small tight knit town.

My stepmom and her friend was extras in the scene at the fair ground where Loretta and Patsy sang in the rain..That was filmed in Wise Va. about 30 minutes from my hometown Big Stone Gap,Va..The first scene in the movie where Doo is driving the jeep on the winding road was filmed in Dorchester ,Va about 15 minutes from Big Stone Gap,Va..
Absolutely LOVED your video! I'm a big fan of Loretta Lynn and Country Music. This brought back a lot of memories. I grew up about the same time on the West Virginia side of Tug River. Unfortunately, I never had a chance to visit Butcher Holler. I remember all the hard times Loretta sings about in "Coal Miner's Daughter", but also remember many good times and family love. I've been gone from the area since about 1956. Still have family in Huntington and Louisa. I would love to visit Loretta's home place sometime. My mother had a kitchen cabinet like that for many years. We just called it the "kitchen cabinet" for lack of a better word. :) Thank you for sharing your wonderful video.

I only live about 30-45 minutes from paintsville Kentucky! I’ve talked with her family and yup of course toured the homestead! I live up in the hills in a holler too! Peace and quiet and beautiful view up in our hills! Glad you guys enjoyed your trip!

I am in my seventies and have lloved Lotetta and her family for years. We traveled to Butcher Hollow three times. The house and all around it has changed since the first time there. Concidering how the road is now I would conciider it paved.. we hit brush the whole way in both sides of the car. There were heaves in the road. The house was sitting alone in need of repair. Next time it had been newly done over in bat n 'board. Third time it looked as it does now with the mini museum. We got a flat tire and Loretta's brother helped us out. Memories.
my husband and I live in KY...took a drive to her childhood home...was amazing...walked through her house and sat on front porch with her brother and talked to him about their childhood and the movie...he was a very nice man and was happy to talk about their life...best trip ever

I grew up listening to Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty, Merle Haggard and so many other great country music artists. Frankly, it's the only country music I truly enjoy...the old stuff. It touches the soul. Thank you for this video. I enjoyed seeing the beautiful scenery and seeing the old homestead of the Webb Family. It was a wonderful idea on your part.

I traveled all the way from Northern Maine just to come see Butcher Holler!!! I would do it again in a heartbeat!!! I have loved Loretta's music for as long as I can remember!!! My grand mother always told me that as a baby I would get fussy but as soon as she played some Loretta I would calm down and just start smiling!! Love you Loretta

My cousin Richard Hitchcock his wife made all the quilts for the movie that Sissy Spacek played in Miner's daughter she played Loretta Lynn. We went down to web store Loretta's Brothers little grocery store we went in we talked but we never got to go inside the Loretta Lynn's homeplace thank you for putting it on TH-cam I sure appreciate it... Man ! makes me wish I'd went in that house.

Loretta is my grandmothers 2nd cousin. I am a Webb by birth. I grew up hearing stories about her, trying to figure out why everyone else knew her too.

I went down that road to the old cabin. I met Loretta's brother that day about 7 years ago....at the time the old Van Leer coal company store was the local Post Office, and one of her niece's was the Post Master, she came to the cabin to check up on her Daddy and we got to meet her....she looks just like Loretta...
That dog laying on the road is so country we always drove around them too.

It was really cool to see Loretta's childhood home. But I was under the impression they were poor. Better home than some folks today have. A gas powered washing machine is better than none at all. Many people today don't have a washing machine. Plenty of room in that old house. Looks as if they were comfortable. Beautiful place. Beautiful country. And the people seem to be down to earth. Great job on the video. Reminds me a little bit of West Virginia where I'm from. Thanks.

Well I am double blessed today with this touching video and learning something new. In searching for a long lost relative's family (Richard Robinson), I come to realize from a newspaper clipping of his death (by a train accident, which he lost both legs), that it all happened right here in the area where one of my favorite country singers, Loretta Lynn Webb was born. Strangely enough, back in the late 1970's or early 80's, I went with a friend to this area where Loretta was born, not knowing the connection of this area to this relative. I love your video and it brought me back the second I saw the house she grew up in, though I never got to go inside. I was born in McDowell Co WV, so I know how the country roads are in the south, and actually though they were not bad at all compared to some I've seen recently in WV. Thank God for some paving here and there and making them thar roads a tad wider. lol Takes that nervousness out of me just a little. Anyway, again thank you for sharing this wonderful laid back video with us and taking us on the road with you. PS, if anyone in this area ever heard of the name Robinson I mentioned and had heard a story back in the day about this man (Richard Robinson), a coal miner of Van Lear, who, on his way to the post office in Jan 1921, tried to hop the freight train, loosing both legs and takin to Paintsville hospital where he died at 9:00 PM, please contact me at sheilajordan79@yahoo.com. Richard was my mom's father-in-law, and he had brothers Warren, William and Henry. Richard was married to Ruth Dawson. They had young children when he died, Warren, Willie and Shirley who was mom's first husband and father to her first 6 children. I have been searching a long time for Richard's parents and siblings. Thank you for this video. My Aunt Bea Meade lived on the corner just above the Van Lear post office...only the foundation of her home remains. As a child in early 1950s we LOVED going to Iggy's store for some pop and maybe a popsicle. My grandmothers home was further up the road, past the school (which I attended in 1952). My mother was Helen W. Meade, Van Lear high school class of 1938. U.S. Army nurse in WWII. Tks for the memories; I have downloaded and enjoy in my old age.

VERY IMPRESSIVE! It's a true testimonial to old fashioned country values them Mr. Webb was able to raise 8 children to successful careers with so little. Especially Loretta and Brenda Gail. He must have been an incredible man, and her mom, wow, what a woman!

Well they was down right well-to-do for hill folk. Loretta grew up in a lovely country home with all the modern conveniences it seems. Stoves, fireplace , big front porch with a swing, great cook stove, washing machine, land of their own, plenty of bedrooms for everyone. Before I got married at the ripe old age of 13 , I remember visiting my grannies house and actually being able to peek through the walls in places. Granny also had many holes (windows) that only had screen in summer and plastic in winter , with a shutter that one had to go outside and pull the stick out to let it down for closing it; We had the convenience of lard buckets to sit upon and coffee cans to use in the winter when we didn't want to go out to the outhouse , two wood stoves, and a fine root cellar. Of course , my grandparents were only share croppers and had no land of their own or a fine miners job to make ends meet on a regular basis. I would say Loretta has been very very blessed all her days. Love me some Loretta. God Bless Doo for having the sense to get her out of the holler so the world could meet and enjoy her and her beautiful voice.

It's all a matter of perspective, but I too was struck by how nice their house seemed...a little slice of heaven. When I was young, (raised in Arkansas), I learned every word to every Loretta song, lol, kind of risque for a 6 year old to be belting out 'Don't Come Home a drinkin'...so to this day, I have a Loretta song for every occasion. My daughter just had her 2nd baby with a not yet 2 year old at home, so I of course had to send her the lyrics to, 'One's on the way', ...Love this video.

Have heard Loretta as well as Dolly Parton say that they could relate to each other completely, as they both grew up in very similiar conditions. These ole mountains have turned out a great bunch of God-fearing folk.

I'm absolutely blown away after watching and seeing this Historic Home of Miss. Loretta Lynn whom my father used to play her songs where I grew up in St.Clair Shores, Michigan back in 1968 when I was 10 years old my folks played her songs and other Country hits, the kids would say to us, your family is Greek why do you all play country music? people are funny that way I guess, we Loved Country in our house my father was a musician and he loved it all !! I ALWAYS wondered what "Butcher Holler" meant and where it really was !! and now I know.....what an amazing peace of History.....WE LOVE YOU LORETTA !!! My Grandparents had the first brick house on the Lake St. Clair. ( moved it from Dettoit) All my Aunti's and cousins now live in St. Clair Shores. ..Great Childhood memories too.

We started our road trip from San Diego to Maryland including Loretta Lynn's home in Hurricane Hills, TN and her Loretta Lynn's Kitchen also in Hurricane Hills then off to Butcher Holler. What a trip. My favorite of all time. My sister has since passed so thank you for sharing this it brings back so many memories or our Loretta Lynn, Elvis (Graceland) then the whole Washington DC trip. I went there on Easter Sunday one year. Herman himself gave us the tour. I wrote a paper for an Appalachian Literature class at Northern Kentucky University. We took a random dirt road on the way out of the holler and it ended up at Loretta's parent's grave site !

I grew up along this very road (302) along with my friends cousins and lot of good people. I've lived in Cincinnati for a long time now and don't get back there much. Thanks so much for posting this. Saw both of my grandmother's houses (both now deceased) and it brought back lots of memories. so glad to have grown up in this small tight knit town.
i loved the whole trip .those roads take me back .to past we lived in the country.that place looked so peaceful& beautiful thanks for memories it brught back for me .

My stepmom and her friend was extras in the scene at the fair ground where Loretta and Patsy sang in the rain..That was filmed in Wise Va. about 30 minutes from my hometown Big Stone Gap,Va..The first scene in the movie where Doo is driving the jeep on the winding road was filmed in Dorchester ,Va about 15 minutes from Big Stone Gap,Va..
I live in Wise, Va. The pie auctioneer, Russell Varner, is actually our neighbor. Cool stuff.

Absolutely LOVED your video! I'm a big fan of Loretta Lynn and Country Music. This brought back a lot of memories. I grew up about the same time on the West Virginia side of Tug River. Unfortunately, I never had a chance to visit Butcher Holler. I remember all the hard times Loretta sings about in "Coal Miner's Daughter", but also remember many good times and family love. I've been gone from the area since about 1956. Still have family in Huntington and Louisa. I would love to visit Loretta's home place sometime. My mother had a kitchen cabinet like that for many years. We just called it the "kitchen cabinet" for lack of a better word. :) Thank you for sharing your wonderful video.
