- "The Coal Miner's Daughter" Loretta Lynn's Butcher Holler Home in Van Lear, Kentucky in Appalachia is BACK OPEN FOR TOURS AGAIN!!!
Melody and I took a tour of the just re-opened Butcher Holler home of Loretta Lynn. It had been closed for over a year but recently open back for the season. It exceeded our expectations and we HIGHLY recommend making the trip to Van Lear, Kentucky in Johnson County, to see the home of the Coal Miner's Daughter. We were blessed with a tour from one of Loretta's nieces who was a very gracious and engaging host and also stopped at the famed Webb's Grocery store. We loved all our stops in Van Lear.

My family is from a holler very near to where you are. It’s named after my grandmothers great grandfather. It’s called Asa Creek, Kentucky, a holler in Paintsville KY. Named after Asa Fairchild. The cabin my gma was born in still stands today, 11 brothers and sisters born in a one room cabin. I was blessed to spend an entire summer there when I was 13. This place holds a special place in my heart
Your grandma's cabin is a real treasure, that's fantastic
That’s a cool area up there, my last father in law was from that area and I think it was his mom that use to hang out with Loretta
Is paintsville the one that has a bridge that just stops and the town is kind of know for it ?
From Prestonsburg and know all these hollers and roam the hills bout everyday….hard livin..wouldn’t have it any other way
@streetLIGHTkid, My Grandpa bought the property on Asa creek where the charcoal kilns are, and where the scale house was my Mama built a little house on that foundation !! Back in the 70's we lived in the ole Carl Tackett place, and us kids were playing in the creek and a fellow by the name of Alvis Kestner asked us if we wanted a deeper hole of water well of course we said yes ...he got out a half a stick of dynamite and told us youngins to get back, well he hooked wires to the battery in his truck and BOOM !!! We had us a fine swimming hole !! He was a grave digger for Jones and Preston funeral home !! Them was some of the best times of my life !!!
Wow. Thank you for showing us all around.
This is what I’m talking about! Takes me back to a time when life was different, better imo. Remember when somebody was broke down on the side of the road, and you’d see 5 people pulled over to help, and still stop and offer help yourself? Remember when you’d hear about someone going through hard times and make a little extra dinner to take them? I know this wasn’t the point of the video. I just can’t help but be taken back to the world I miss so much. When people respected each other. Thank you for sharing this! May God bless y’all!!
I’m with you......I get so nostalgic thinking about the good ole days. Wish we could turn back the clocks.
I feel the same way...so nice to read your words... I think alot about those days... never thought that way of life would end...
Appalachians touring Appalachia the best way to learn Our history thanks to you both it's a great tour.
Thanks so much for watching and the kind words
My Daddy would have loved this. He was crazy about Loretta Lynn. We didn't live that far from her. Way back in the fifties, he was standing on a corner in Grundy, Va, and her bus stopped right beside him. He talked about that until he died in 2016 at 93. Thank you guys for this video. Brought back memories.
My nephew used to race at the Loretta Lynn MX event when he was a kid. Great lady and a great event for the young kids.
Loretta Lynn does good work in the world with her MX support. God bless Loretta Lynn.
What is MX support, please?
Nothing in the world like rural life and country folks. Salt of the earth. I will never forget you, Miss Loretta.
Always wanted to take a trip there, thanks for taking me along.
A Kentucky Girl
Glad to have you aboard, thanks for watching
Dear Uncle Sam and One's On the Way are two of my favorite LL songs. Thanks for taking us there.
Great great song choices there
That old schoolhouse was super neat. Just saw Loretta Lynn on Dukes of Hazard the other day. She got caught in the Boss Hogg/Rosco celebrity speed trap and had to sing at the Boar's Nest :).
lol such an 80’s plot
Just found this video, I had no idea that you went to Butcher Holler and now it means a whole lot more since we’ve lost Loretta a week ago RIP Loretta you’ll be missed by many
It was one of our favorite trips but is sad right now due to her loss
Now my wife wants to go! D'oh! You two had so much fun visiting, she figures we will too! Good job guys. You two are fun to watch. God bless you both... *\0/*
It is well worth the trip, it's a great experience
@@realappalachia Well, just so you know, you two make it fun. Thanks for bringing us along! Happy Sunday!
@@alvankarpas6245 thanks so much and happy Sunday to you too
@Sara Bella For sure, their conversation is so natural and easy and communicate so much without seeming to "educate us!" :-)
Been there twice. The first time I went some of her family was actually living in the house. They had a book you could sign and also sold honey and jelly and jams.
I enjoyed both visits immensely the first visit was 1980 and second 2014.
now that would have been amazing
You two are so damn awesome!!! Please don’t stop what your doing. Really is a great thing y’all are doing. I’m from West Virginia and it’s so great how you two cover the Appalachia. Thank y’all again, Mountain Momma!! 😁
Thank you so much, we really appreciate your kind words and thank you for watching
@@realappalachia Your welcome. Can’t wait for more from yall
That was a great tour. I saw Loretta back in ‘66 at a high school in Ky. She had a great voice.
I bet that was a great show
That house reminded me of my grandmothers house. My mother was born in Letcher County Kentucky in 1939. Same year as the Wizard of Oz! May God bless and keep all of them! She Loved Loretta Lynn and so does my Dad! May God Bless Y'all
My dad was born that same year, glad it brought back memories
@@realappalachia I've never liked Country music as a kid! I find a fascination with it now. In other words. I rebelled and actually appreciate it now. It's part of my heritage!
@@michaelcantrell3678 I kinda went through the same thing a few years ago
@@realappalachia My mother was the most forgiving woman I've ever met! One of the Most down too earth people on this planet and a coal Miner's daughter! Just didn't sing for an audience. She Sang for me and my brothers and sisters! She had a voice that made the angles of Heaven Happy!
@@michaelcantrell3678 those are some awesome memories
The homeplace reminds me so much of my Grandma's old house near Clinchport, VA. - the coal burning fireplace and cook stove, the bed in the front room, and upstairs bedrooms for the boys.
Thanks Shane and Melody!
I'm from the big city. I've always loved The Coal Miner's Daughter, and I find this video absolutely fascinating. Loretta Lynn's homeplace is beautiful.
Really glad you enjoyed it. Loretta's homeplace is as legit as it gets. Thank you.
@@realappalachia, I subscribed to y'all.
@@drusmith3480 thank ya so much, we really appreciate you
Still have the VHS Coal Miners Daughter movie. I was a kid in Arkansas when the movie hit the cinema. Played a long long time. Just watched the movie again last week. So many people were raised like that including my parents. My Mom cries everytime Levon Helm is shown as Lorettas Dad. Reminds her exactly of her father when she was growing up in the Ozarks. Thanks for the tour and the memories!
So glad it brought back warm memories for youz thanks for watching
I wish i could visit these beautiful places
My husband and I went there a few years back on a motorcycle trip. I believe her cousin did the home tour. I think it was $10 each. We stopped at the store to get directions to her house from her brother. Very Cool! We’ve also been to Hurricane Mills in Tennessee. Met her daughter at her antique store. Really nice gal!
I gotta go here early next year! Beautiful country. Thank you for sharing this with us….
glad you enjoyed it, you won't regret the trip
I have drove past the sign going there but never really had a chance to stop. My mom thought she was the best singer ever. I'm partial to Coal Miner's Daughter lol
There's just something about her that speaks to soooooo many people. She seems to be such an incredible person.
@@realappalachia She seems down to earth. A lot of musical talent from that part of KY. My mom, who was from KY could play guitar and sing. I can do neither lo
Rest In Peace our beloved and beautiful Loretta Lynn, the Queen of Country Music 🎼🎵🎶🎵🎶…
Brilliant content, I am a big fan of American folk music, nice to see where Loretta lived. Best wishes from little old England
Thank you so much, John, glad you enjoyed it in the motherland
I toured the house in the late 1970s. Herman Webb (Loretta's brother) was at the front of the house when I drove up. I was the
Kentucky blasting inspector for Eastern Kentucky under the Kentucky Dept. of Mines, and Herman and I talked for some time.
When I told him who I was, he complained about surface coal mine blasting located at the rear of the property and said that it
really shook and bothered them. I told him that I would inspect the mine and see if I could get the vibration levels reduced while
I was in the area. He thanked me for looking into it and asked if I would like to go inside the house. Since I still had time to kill
before my appointment in Paintsville, I said sure. Herman then said that will be $5. I still get tickled when I think back on that!
Sounds like Herman got you lol, was sad to hear of his passing. He must have been quite a character.
I used to work in the holler right before you get to where Loretta Lynn's Homeplace is thank you very much for the ride along. I used to live in a little town in Floyd County it was called Allen Kentucky. But now I live in Wayne County Kentucky on Lake Cumberland
thanks for riding along with us
Great tour. Thanks for the video. I got to see her years ago and shook her hand. A nice memory.
that is fantastic, she seems like a genuine and sweet person with so much talent. Thanks for watching
Sixteen Tons and What do you get, another Day Older and Deeper in Debt--to the Company Store...Tennessee Ernie Ford told the Truth in this Song...
I am 56 now , back when I was 20 Herman gave me my tour , He talked of his sisters and how either one of them helped with the up keep of the place and why the upstairs is still not open to this date . Most orginal stuff had been stolen from the home stead and Herman worked hard to find pieces as he could of the time period ! He really deserves more credit of keeping the place alive !
By the way only thing that was there when I was there was the bed ! Different bed quilt .
Thanks for the video Shane, I really appreciate it.
Really glad you enjoyed it, Alicia, thank you
Really interesting. Thanks you guys
I’m a coal miners granddaughter. CMD is a movie I watch every time it’s on TV. My maiden name is Webb, grandma and grandpa lived in Minden WV. There’s supposed to be a Webb’s mountain in WV. My grandma had 11 children with two upstairs bedrooms,6 boys in one and 5 girls in the other. When I was little in the 60’s at night, there were pee cans in the two upstairs bedrooms. It seems so normal back then. In the movie CMD, I loved the part when they show the “company store”. It looked like the one at my grandparents house. My twin aunts never married, they stayed home and took care of my grandparents. One of my aunts boyfriend was named Doolittle. I could go on and on. All the ghost stories. These were my best memories growing up. I’m a new subscriber, these videos are so wonderful to see.🥰
Great comment, love reading those memories. Welcome to the family 😊
I'm supposed to be related to Loretta Lynn. And Ricky Scaggs. My dad's family was from Perry Co. My dad was born in Ary.
I loved this video and Melody hearing you saying that bout your momma and brothers brought tears to my eyes. ❤️
Aw thank you so much, Anita!! ❤️ - Melody
I'm glad you two made it out there. I visited the area last winter but Loretta's home was closed. The man who runs the store was very nice.
Safe travels 😊🌻
Thanks so much, we appreciate it
Great video! Hello from East TN!!
Thank you guys it was so enjoyable to follow along. I have not been there. And at the time I lived in a little town (Chesapeake, Oh) across the Ohio river from Huntington WV. I've been to Jenny C Willey state park when I was about 8yrs old. So again Thank you an God bless 🙏💫
Really happy you enjoyed it, God bless you too
I love this one. Another great place I need to visit. When my grandma was alive Loretta Lynn was her absolute favorite singer. One of my fondest memories with my grandma was when I was able to take her to see Loretta Lynn in concert in Cincinnati, Ohio in the 1970s. My grandma was so happy she just couldn't stop smiling through the entire concert. It warms my heart to think about that trip. Thank you for bringing that memory back to the forefront of my mind. ❤
Oh that does sound like an amazing memory! I can just imagine how happy that made her! - Melody
Your close to my hometown is Salyersville. I always wanted to go see that.
so odd you would mention Salyersville, we were talking about there while we were driving back from Paintsville.
Salyersville is awesome. WINK

That woman that did the tour sounds like Loretta... You can tell she is related! So cool to see!!!😍
I could listen to Melodys voice all day! Rick (in the UK)
Wow, thank you for making this video! Wish my dad could've seen this video, he was a big Loretta Lynn fan and a big country music fan in general. I hope Loretta's family keeps doing these tours, because future generations should be able to see her homeplace as well.
Absolutely loved this…
Thank ya, Buffy

Omg. Just yesterday I google earthed butcher holler and was only able to see a street view of the front of the store and the old homestead. This was sooo much better. Thank you for sharing

Just found you guys, I’ve always been curious about Appalachia. Watching from Australia 🇦🇺

I had to watch this again , since Loretta lynn just passed away...🙏❤
So sad, we loved our visit there
Love Loretta Lynn and my heart breaks to lose someone like her. Years ago I got an autographed picture of Loretta and I checked in and took care of her older band. Her manager made sure to get it for me. She want be forgotten and Thanks for this video.
Sounds like you have some great memories of Loretta, Sophia, thanks for sharing
Thanks for posting. Have always been a Loretta Lynn fan, but have never been down there. The house reminds me a lot of my ex wife's Grandma's house in Meadowbrook, WV. It was in a coal camp. We stayed there once and the steps going up to the attic bedroom was pretty much a ladder and there was a room to right and left, just an opening that wasn't very tall and had to bend over to get in. Good memories.
Thanks for sharing those great memories with us
It's almost like being there in person when I ride along with you [by video] ,it is very real. I can see and visit places that I will never see.Thanks.
That’s awesome, thanks for hopping aboard, Ronald
Excellent !
Thank you so much
I have always watched Loretta ever since I grew up in the 60s. Loved her pretty dresses. I have to tell you guys what a great job you did. I have never seen any pictures of that house as great as this. It really puts into reality just how far back in those hills they were . Her hard working daddy never knew what a Famous Country Queen he was raising. She was his little Queen anyway. Thanks for the video
Glad you enjoyed it, Teresa
My favorite Loretta song is "You're lookin at country." That girl was country to the marrow. RIP.
Really enjoyed the tour. My husband and I went there years ago and had intended to go back. Love Loretta Lynn.
God Bless you both. Great job.
Thank you, God bless you too, Donna

Remionds me of driving here in Western PA. a little We have hollers here too. :)
Sometimes, big things come from small beginnings.
Very very true
I think this was way more interesting than down in Nashville. Great job. 2nd time to watch. When I go to Cincinnati I deliberately go the double AA highway just to be on the periphery of the coal country. I highly recommend you take that from Ashland to Maysville and get off the 4 lane! Wonderful Appalachian history! Lot's to film! Check that drive out you guys!❤️❤️❤️❤️
That sounds like a great drive thanks for the tip
I have been to Butcher Holler. I have a picture of the house. It was an amazing place to see. Loretta Lynn has always been my favorite ❤️
Nice video. Thanks for taking us to her home. At the coal mine entrance I wasn’t thinking snakes I was thinking chiggers.
Love it.

I really enjoy your videos. I'm from Indiana and my daddy was from Georgia, and I love the southern states. But the Appalachian people are the most fascinating to me, and the stories of growing up in the mountains and hollers were hard, but simple times. Thank you for bringing us these videos. Much appreciated.
Awesome, so glad you like them, Diana
Great tour, so authentic!
We stopped at Webbs and the guy called someone to come open the Coal miners museum. So worth it. Helps really tie it together. Our tour was done by Hermalee her niece. Great visit.
All of my immediate family lived down the road from Van Lear. Was only there once, mostly a holler. Good people
Thank u for showing us more than everyone else

I'm not a country western fan but I really enjoyed this. Loretta used to live near me in washington state.

I was there in 2015 and Herman Webb gave us a really detailed showing.. we got caught there in a really bad storm that caused alot of damage with a flash flood near by.. a wonderful memory made there... fyi.. its waaay back in the mountains along way...
I bet that was fantastic, I've heard that Herman was a hoot
Yeah he was and he knew the area where my friend lives and he'd said he'd spent some time up there so they really got on plus they grew up in huge families.. ;D I haven't been back to eastern ky since 2018 so I really enjoy your videos, keep up the great job!
