Robyn’s friend catfished Meri into an emotional affair.
You need to understand that Meri was set up and that Robyn had something to do with this. Meri, herself had stated that Robyn was a part of this in season 18. You can not speak about this with any authority unless you have some of the important details in reference to this situation. Do your due diligence before you make a public statement. You have been informed of this several times. You either don’t read the comments on your videos or you have decided to ignore them and speak about this taking it on a face value level. If it’s the latter, it would be best to leave this alone.

Why, of all the sponsorship opportunities, is a doctor of psychology endorsing one of the most historically predatory and psychologically manipulative industries? I am sincerely curious, as perhaps there is new research or insights that haven't yet filtered down from journals to popular media.
Let's not forget that Meri was pursued by the catfish under guise of investing in her MLM. She wasn't out there looking for anyone. This was also right after Kody divorced her. Even though they called it "just paperwork" Meri was clearly devastated. And Robyn's friend vouched for the nonexistent "investor."

I totally agree! I also remember that Robyn’s friend was involved in the whole catfishing incident. Knowing what I know now about Robyn, I’m convinced it was a set up and Robyn knew all along that Meri was being catfished. She is just that devious and manipulative. She had just gotten the legal wife status. Meri did it (was forced to IMO) but it just devastated her. Meri really did love Kody. Kody treated her like absolute crap and discarded her before and especially after the legal divorce. They had no need for her other than her income. So it makes sense the catfish would be an “investor” in her business. It might seem out there but I think Robyn was behind that. Also, David, we need to remember that in the earlier episodes Kody was just acting and pretending. The OG3 and some of the grown children have confirmed that when the cameras were off he was a very different person. Hostile and angry. His mask slipped and completely fell in the last few seasons.
Catfish History: Meri was legally divorced from Kody about 4-6 months before she crossed paths with the catfish online. There was a lot of trauma between Kody and Meri before and after the divorce. She had thought that Kody might appreciate her more when she gifted him and Robyn the divorce. Instead, Kody discarded Meri completely. The rest of the family ignored/excluded her too. She developed a group of friends, Jen being one of them, the catfish being another. Meri wanted friendship, she was not looking for sex. Meri was targeted. Meri’s sister had died of colon cancer and she had health issues of her own. They connected over ‘his’ sympathy for her sister’s passing. She was love bombed at first then it turned sinister. The catfish did a whole stalking/mind game on her. He knew what she was wearing, where she was, what store she was shopping in, what she was talking about/thinking. Meri was terrified. She thought that her house was bugged. It was hinted that there was an attempt to blackmail her (and TLC?) to keep the online relationship quiet. Robin finally admitted (season 18) that the catfish person was a friend of her best friend Kendra. Kendra has done several interviews with the tabloids over the years. Kendra told Robyn that the catfish was a real person, a real man and that he was a legit businessman. Whether intentionally or unintentionally, Robyn was the 'bug' haunting Meri. The catfish was actually a woman named Jackie who has a history of cyber stalking and catfishing others. It looks like Robin had been feeding Kendra information about Meri that the catfish used to terrorize Meri. Robyn knew what was going on and who was behind it. Kendra was stirring up drama when she told Robyn/Kody that Meri was having an affair. We still don’t know the entire story but we do know that Leon, who was still living with Meri, was aware of Meri’s cyber friend. When it all blew up, Kody told Leon that it was not Meri’s fault, that it was partly his fault (there is a recording of this). It took a long time for Meri and Leon to rebuild their relationship. They are very close now. Janelle, Christine and their kids have all said that the catfish incident was not important to them. Kody clubbed Meri with it for years. Meri was asked recently if her trust in Robyn had been broken. She said ‘Yes’ and that it took a long time to trust her again. Robyn shrugged that nothing had affected trust, there had been nothing to fix. BTW: Who is Kendra? Kendra is Robyn's friend who took the ladies shopping in San Francisco at stores where only Robyn fit in the clothes. It was a cringey episode - Season 6, episode 15 or 16. The women were in San Francisco and left Kody in charge of the kids. That is when Truely became ill with kidney failure.

Meri agrees to legally divorce so that he can marry his soulmate and adopt her kids...pretty much check. All this before the catfish...If Kody is offended, it's because of his public image.

There’s a growing consensus that Robyn set Meri up. I wouldn’t doubt Kody was in on it. He was looking for a way to get rid of her from the second he laid eyes on Robyn.
Robin's friend Kendra knew about the catfish and was feeding information back to Robin and Kody.
In all fairness, Kody had burned down her ring and emotionally left her around the time of the wedding. Robin acts innocent, but no she helped set Meri up.
Kendra was a friend of Jackie the catfish.

Also in a tell all or something, Meri did briefly mention she didn’t trust the family and Robyn included,and brought up the catfish incident but didn’t elaborate.

You often express things that are ridiculous in context and I wish you had watched all of the shows like Allison before you expounded on everyone’s motivation.
Whenever Kody is around other men he gets weird! Like he feels the need to constantly prove how "masculine" he is.
I think that was the reasoning behind him getting into polygamy and why he married christine and robyn. Christine came from a well known family and robyn was being courted by a lot of other men. All the wives were trophies for him to show to other men
In the episode that featured friends of his from high school, a female friend remarked they actually thought he was gay.

I really want to scream “Stop with the catfishing episode already”!!!!! Kody had Meri divorce him so he could marry Robyn for Bull’s- reasons, Meri was now an empty nester, the sister wives and Kody had abandoned her. Don’t forget she wanted to go back to school and Robyn didn’t want her to because she needed help with Sister Wives Closet…. She was “spiritually married to Kody if you want to believe in that but otherwise had nothing. She had every reason to look for some type of relationship with someone who might notice she was a business woman with a sense of humor who was terribly lonely.
I think I turned it off about the time of the stupid catfish thing. It was all so stupid and just on and on and on. I tuned in to see the move to Scottsdale and then the whole searching for a house for Robyn while Coyote Pass was all they talked about was happening. NOTHING about it made any sense to me. So back off. Now I'm here catching up.
Robyn’s feet has never been held to the fire for knowing the person that was communicating with Meri’s catfish. To this day, I think Robyn was definitely aware of what was happening and watched from a destroyer’s point of view.

Meri could've left Kody when he abandoned her, just like the other wives. Christine was born into this culture just like Meri. Cheating is never excusable. Meri is not the helpless child everyone wants her to be. The only innocents in this family are the children
Also Kody was allowed to tell other wives he didn't want to be intimate with them but was still able to be intimate with other women. Meanwhile he expected the other women to just have no intimacy whatsoever and didn't care about their feelings.
TBH I am surprised a psychologist would endorse and recommend a gambling website. Especially without cautioning people who have addictive tendencies not to engage.

I don't think cheating physically or emotionally helps anything or anyone. Robyn had a "friend" in on the catfish scheme. That's why Meri thought she was being bugged in the house, Robyn was feeding them with inside information. She wanted Meri out and to divorce City so she could take over.

I think once Kody realized he could play the victim in the catfishing he used it as an excuse to openly treat her how he already was in private.

Meri was right to think her house was bugged. Robyn and her friend Kendra were the bugs. Kendra was talking to the catfisher.
For some context into Caleb and Kody's relationship. Caleb was actually almost 30 and is about 10 years older than Maddie. But Caleb is the younger brother of Kody's sister-in-law. When Kody's brother tragically and unexpectedly passed away in a motorcycle accident Caleb pretty much put his life on hold to help his sister and her kids. So Kody really admired Caleb for stepping up and looking after the kids and taking care of that family while they got their feet back under them. So I think Kody and Caleb really felt more like brothers for a long time until Caleb started to see how poorly Kody was treating his unwanted wives and their kids.
When you put it that way what a shame and how sad. I can only imagine what Maddie and Caleb must feel having to see this spiral with him all unfold before them. He really let so many down. How sad.
I don't understand all the criticism and judgement towards Meri regarding the catfishing. Kody kept adding women to fulfill his needs. He recently added Robyn who seemingly met his physical and emotional needs and didn't care that the other women felt even more neglected. Meri needs were not being met and Kody made it clear he wasn't willing to do more to fulfill them. What was wrong with Meri being open to someone else who was willing to do more for her than Kody?
Personal opinion. Kody used the catfish situation to his advantage. Having her jump through hoops for him. He had no intention to get back together with her. He wanted her money to stick around more than anything.
As much as absolutely loathe Kody with every cell in my body, he brought women in with the support of the existing wives. Whether they can truly consent in the system they exist in is another discussion but Meri was sneaking and breaking the agreement(however fuckd up) they had. But the worst part is she wasn't putting herself and potentially her CHILD in danger. Imagine if this was an actual man with violent intentions. She was being a moron and could easily have gotten herself or her kid hurt.

@@batkat0 I'm skeptical of the narrative she helped bring Robyn into the family. My guess is that Meri's part was exaggerated to make Kody selecting a younger wife a more palatable story. The online relationship wasn't a wise choice. Meri probably lived a sheltered life and was naive. She was probably starved for love and attention as well. What I don't understand is why people think she should have any loyalty to Kody.
Kody expressed to Janelle that some polygamist people live in different geography/states. If Meri moved countries and had absolutely nothing to do with the Browns except for financial contribution, Kody would be very OK with that. He only wants marital unions or friends with benefits situations with Robyn and Janelle.

When you start talking to someone for business reasons, and they start to romance you, it is not the same as you actively looking for a relationship. If your husband legally divorces you to marry another woman, and then completely abandoned you, it makes you vulnerable. Kody opened up the door for Meri to be lonely and vulnerable. Ultimately the catfish was a CU Next Tuesday, who clearly know that Meri was lonely and took advantage of that. Meri did have a part in this but she was a victim all the same. Kody’s hands are not clean. He should have let Meri go, so that she could find happiness. Instead, he left her vulnerable and then got angry that she was tempted. He loves to bash her for it. Ultimately, I blame the Catfisher and Kody for the situation.
Also, Kody sees it different now because it fits his narrative better now the it was meri stepping out, not him rejecting meri and abandoning her for Robyn.

Oh 100%. As much as people understandably had concerns about the age gap between Caleb and Maddie, I've come to respect Caleb. Him and Maddie seem very happy and I know the show does not show everything, but there is a night and day difference between they way he treats Maddie and Tony treats Mykelti. Caleb also has a daughter with physical disabilities and who needed major surgeries, so he could definitely empathize with Ysabel. Caleb keeps things very cordial on camera, but I think he was disgusted with Kody abandoning Ysabel when she needed him the most.
David do you know that Robyn's friend was involved in the catfish. So I believe Robyn was more involved than a listening compassionate ear.
The person she was talking to was Robins friend/cousin
Meri's child knew what Meri was doing and warned her may times that she was being scammed and that what she was doing was not right. That's why there was a fall out between those two for couple years
But, the catfisher was threatening her. She felt she needed to prevent 'him' as she had been threatened almost immediately. She felt she could not ignore him/her.
Why should she have told her family? Why would you be pissed off if you found out that your wife, who you divorced to marry someone else, and had treated her like the dirt on your shoe for 20 years, be talking to a man online?
The episode where they switch to a new counselor, the counselor actually tries to hold Kody accountable to his abusive ways, and he gets so butt hurt and so does Robyn. I think that’s she never actually did much of anything from that point on
I definitely would be pissed if I were the husband. No doubt. I also would be pissed if I were a loyal wife who had been chucked to the side for him to legally marry someone else -- because it's _terribly obvious_ she had no choice in the matter. Is it an excuse? Nope, absolutely not. Is it a reason? Likely. Not one family member fought to keep her.
It for sure is a reason. Best way to get over someone old is to get under someone new.
Unfortunately Meri mistreated those people who didn’t fight to keep her. That’s why.

The families non-reaction to Meri’s news tells you how bad her relationship was with Kody at that point.
Didn’t Robyn’s friend introduce Meri to the cat fish? She also vouched for “him” and said that they had meet so Meri felt safe? I know Robyn was a lot more involved then the show let’s on. Please someone remind me exactly how the whole thing happened. I know Robyn’s friends did an interview about the catfish.
As far as I know Robyn's friend came in later.
I thought in the beginning, maybe she couldn’t admit she was indeed going to leave Kody. The fact that she can’t even do that now is odd. It is not talked about enough. Robin was believing what her friend was telling her about the catfish. I’m sure she had Kody’s ear. The more information that comes out. It feels like a master manipulation on the part of Robin.
Are you forgetting the part where Kody melted down their ring bc he didn’t want her to “have any hold”‘over him? And then how he forced her to divorce him under the guise of “we have to adopt Robin’s kids”? No? Yeah. Thought so.
Stepping out of what relationship? Kody ended emotionally long before the catfish. She was legally divorced before the catfish.
Let’s not ignore reality…she WASN’T married. Later we discover they had not been intimate in years.

You can start to see Kodys shift in thinking about Meri as a victim when he talks to Leon in a later episode. He is talking to Leon to encourage Leon to forgive Meri but instead he gets angrier at Meri himself after hearing what Leon has to say. You should find that episode!

Caleb is in older and already known to the family through marriage. He’s Kody’s sister-in-law’s brother.
Do you believe that Kody told Meri what he told Christine prior to the catfish that their intimacy was over and she could go do her own thing but stay in the family and then it backfired with the catfish situation ? I have always felt that was why they were so easy about it in the beginning. And then by later seasons when things were falling apart he used it as the public excuse to save his reputation.
This was not long after the divorce. Meri felt abandoned. Once Kody and Robyn were able to get legally married, Kody threw her away. 😢
You opened a can of worms on this Meri catfish episode. I had no idea how it happened but I’ve always understood how it happened. Kody abandoned her emotionally and physically before that happened.

She was terrorized by whomever was behind this. I don’t doubt Kody & Robyn were the only ones who could have fed the information regarding her whereabouts, what she was wearing at a given time, etc, to the catfisher. It’s beyond cruel, it’s borderline criminal.

I believe Meri harbored a deep sense of guilt following the catfishing incident, which is why she stuck around Kody for as long as she did. This was compounded by Robyn giving her false hopes that by remaining committed and staying long enough, Kody would eventually rekindle their relationship.
I think she was looking for someone a relationship bc she wasn’t getting what she needed. If this became a real relationship she would be able to make the decision to leave Kody so much earlier.

Caleb is several years older than Maddie. They became close when Kody’s brother, who was married to Caleb’s sister died after, I think it was an automobile accident.
Part of Kodys admiration of Caleb is that he basically provided and cared for his widowed sister.

Ironically, neither Caleb nor Maddie speak to Kody these days. Kody has stopped caring about being a good father in law or dad.

There is a coinspiracy theory that Robin and Kendra were involved in the catfish scandal. That Robyn knew a long time before Meri that she was being catfished.

Kody had totally isolated Mari and the sister wives were ignoring her totally. The situation Mari found herself in was feeling abandoned and alone. There is some accountability on Mari’s fault but I completely blame Kody because the way he will completely cut you off when he’s done- look what he’s done to his children! What a child.

The part you’re forgetting here is they weren’t sleeping together or physically in the same house for over 10 years at that point. So no one was surprised when she said she might leave. That’s why it’s the same old till these final seasons - where no one cares about her feelings or well being - specially Robyn
I think Kody and the wives were sympathetic towards Meri in the beginning. Then, the cat fisher created a blog and posted a lot of stuff that I’m sure they ended up seeing/reading and they realized Meri wasn’t so innocent after all. I mean I agree that she was being neglected by the family, more so by Kody, and unconsciously sought out attention and affection by a stranger. And instead of walking away she must of thought she deserved to be treated so poorly to make up for her ‘affair’ which is just sad.
I really think this catfishing was orchestrated. Yes Meri(in her religion) was stepping out. Did she have reason? Yes. They stepped out on her. Knowing there is no trust or safe communication amongst any of them, I get where Meri was going. I’m sorry, but the bunch of them brought this on but I feel Robyn being friends with Kendra, she was feeding info. Total betrayal. If someone Robyn confided in told tabloids, Robyn would be furious! This whole thing is fishy. Meri was dumped way before marriage to Robyn. Did Meri play a part in her departure with the wives? Sure! She’s to blame also and then she kept on trying to please Kody and did his bidding. The whole thing is so dysfunctional. Sad…
I would t give robyn credit. As a narcissist, she knows who is the black sheep in the family and plays into that vulnerability to insert herself and be a “savior”. Robyn did the same thing with mykelti.
I can’t believe Nancy always allowed Kody to take no responsibility but could always talk about what the wives were doing wrong. I’ve never seen anything like it. That’s not therapy. Being the wife I would feel like it was just another person telling me everything I was doing wrong and everything I needed to change.
Kody used the catfishing and Meri for a storyline to make him seem like a nice guy. Behind the scene was a different story . But it all comes out in the end . We know
He needs to watch all the episodes to know the whole story. Once again, Kody divorced Meri. Legally, they weren't married. He immediately married Robin.
I think they are understanding, seeing as they knew that Kody had melted down their wedding band and recognized Meri was hurting. And we have seen how he pushed the other wives away after Robyn.

I think everyone was able to be kind because they knew how unhappy Merri had been for a long time and why. Also they realize Merri is a good person who stepped out of her normal behavior and wasn't truly aware of how easy it is get in over your head in the online meet ups.
This feeling of Meri feeling watched? What has come out is Robyn had an association somehow with the catfish! So the feeling of being watched could be real! As in Robyn!
I would love for you to watch the first few episodes of season 1 to see how different the family was back then compared to now. It's quite eye opening to rewatch those first few seasons and see how much has changed.

Robyn’s friend knew the catfish/vouched for said catfish so lets not ignore that very odd very telling connection there.
I think fans are frustrated with the catfishing because if we're looking at this through the lens of Kody being a narcissist - this is great fuel for him. Kody and Robyn are still analysing whether Meri broke her covenant and Kody says she had an affair presently. If Kody wanted to progress his relationship with Robyn and isolate Meri, the catfish is what he's holding over Meri's head permanently. Meri can't win. Catfish = Kody feels betrayed. Kody arriving at a place of forgiveness = Kody still feels betrayed. (We've already seen years of Meri trying to get in good with Kody's graces through giving Robyn whatever Robyn wants.)
The wives are kind because Meri is mistreated by Kody.
It came out that Robin knew about the catfish before meri told her, and she was feeding information to kody. A friend of robins knew about the catfish and was feeding Robin information.
Even very intelligent people can be caught in a catfish situation. Especially if you're in a situation where you dont feel loved and valued.
If the catfish finds your weak spot, he/she has a way in. He/she will push you to you limit and beyond. He/she will twist your words, until you don't know what's up and what's down. Pressure you with "you don't care about me if you don't do ......". You're going to loose me, if you don't do......". And then moves on to "I'm going to tell, if you don't do ......".
As a therapist you should know that.
You should watch all episodes before analyzing. You've missed a lot.

I don’t know how this started and I’m not downplaying Meri’s role in the catfishing incident, but I personally don’t think she was online looking for a relationship. There are people online who go out of their way to prey on others and it’s easy to get caught up in it, especially when you’re vulnerable. Look how Meri was being treated in her marriage. The first time someone starts talking nice to her, it’s easy for her to fall victim without her even realizing it. It’s also easy for others to sit back in judgement. I’m not Meri’s biggest fan, and I definitely see her trying to deflect all blame from herself (she’s not blameless), but she was completely naive and also living in a loveless shitty marriage.

Jackie Overton a female was/ is a big scammer and has suckered a lot of people. Last I knew she was back in jail in OK, her face actually popped up on a Catfish about a year or 2 ago, and they passed on the case because the Catfish was in jail. Robyn and her bestie Kendra were behind this whole thing. Kendra even said she met and was friends with"Sam Cooper" to validate his existence. This last SW season the Catfish incident was brought up and you should have seen Robyn squirm when she talked about her "friend" that she found out wasn't a friend... I call BS she was an accomplice. Meri should have just said, ya I did it Kody you POS, I was dumped and neglected by my "husband" and I needed a friend. What's with the double standard, he has 4 wives and is constantly fishing for another, this is so the pot calling the kettle black. Oh and far as Caleb, he is the brother to Kody's brother's widow, I think her knew what Kody was all about and couldn't stand him.
Also, there are voicemails from Meri to the catfish that are really compromising.
Voice mail and bathtub pictures. Meri was all in until she figured out the truth.
The voicemails are pretty damning, too. She repeatedly tells the catfisher she loves “him.” At the time, Meri was my least favorite, and I judged her harshly for having an emotional affair. Since then we have learned that Meri was being grossly neglected by her husband and ignored by the family, who lived so close by. We were basically seeing Meri during some of the hardest times of her life. I have a lot more sympathy for her now.
Hope you rewatch some more of the earlier episodes! Would love to hear your thoughts given what we know now.

you forgot one crucial point" all this happened after Kody forced Meri to divorce him so he could marry Robyn.This was presented as just a formality, but it clearly was extremely painful for Meri. Yes, Meri was hiding a secret, but Kody and Robyn's deception trumped that by a mile!. what you think of as Robyn's "kindness" towards Meri is , maybe, a touch of guilt? It is totally logical that Meri was trying to find someone else, I just wish she had the strength then to kick all these so-called family members to the curb and create a real life for herself without them.
Robyn was involved in getting information to the catfish. All an act to keep favor of Meri.
Avoidance, always with this Family !! Avoid the discussions which are helpful and could bond them closer together
I'm just glad Meri finally got OUT ! I believe she wanted to get more involved with the 'catfish ' . She was made to feel loved and wanted. So, finding out that this person who she had fallen for was just a con must have broken her heart .I can only imagine how alone she must have felt when she found out.
