    VERY IMPORTANT UPDATE REGARDING RE7'S BENCHMARK HERE.
    So, it appears that there was some kind of bug with my OBS that was causing a massive performance drop on the game merely by being open, and when stacked on with a recording, dropped my performance by over 30%. I have checked the other games and this did not appear to effect them in any significant way, not sure why the RE mods were an anamoly. I cannot verify if this effected the 3090 TI as well, due to no longer possessing the card, but I would assume so as, while not specific to the RE mods, I've seen some people complain about this with OBS in other games. So the relative increase from the 3090 TI is PROBABLY valid as similar best case numbers have been seen in flatscreen gaming.
    I could effectively get the same FPS on Large FoV as I was getting on normal FoV, little bit better even, despite the fact Large is around 5000x3160~ while Normal is roughly 3800x3160~ per eye, which is a gigantic difference.
    Deeply sorry for the problem, I usually launch OBS first and play most of my games with it open, since I record most of what I play, so I didn't realize the bug and only caught it when adjusting some settings off screen in RE8 to optimize it for my coming playthrough. I may do another video benchmark specifically for RE7&RE8 on the 4090 due to this to show off the better performance in light of this, because that is a significant bump and it's actually quite possible to do a fairly solid 90FPS with max settings with FSR despite the huge resolution.

      The 4090 only did this impressive JUMP BC the Changes from 8nm Samsung to 4nm tsmc and cranking Up the Power Draw Like crazy ....
      The 4070ti will BE about the lvl of a 3090
      So 4060 will BE Like ~ 3070ti
      Next time they will Go from 4nm to 3nm so only a 25% reducing instead of 60%+ BC 8nm Samsung was worse than 8nm tsmc ...
      So If we are lucky we can assume
      5060 ~ 3080ti
      6060 ~ 4080
      7060 ~ 4090
      There wont BE another big jump Like this unless they introduced a whole new tech

      @@larsbaer3508 Nops! the 4090 heavily undervolted ( 350W) just drops like 5% compared to stock in the benchmarks. 4nm and a monolitic awesome design it's what make it possible. But this will likely be the last of it's kind, far too expensive to produce compared to the multichip solution everyone it's adopting. And unfortunately by the time a 5060 hit the market it could cost as much as 600$, as lately the price is more related to the performance than the age of the technology.

    I'd love to see this type of video with the upcoming 7900XT/XTX. Also, as others said, it would be nice if you could figure out a way to get a comparison test in VRchat, just running through a random public lobby would definitely not cut it because that would be way too many random variables, but if you were in the same demanding world with a couple of friends who are in the same avatars for both tests, I think that would make it fair. People tend to say that it's a very CPU bound game, and it's true but when the resolution is so high it becomes more GPU dependant than one might think.

    • @Omniwhatever
      @Omniwhatever  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Unfortunately, I no longer possess my 3090 TI and so I cannot do a 1:1 benchmark like this with it, but I still do plan on sort of doing a performance showcase of the 4090 in real world usage in VRChat due to popular demand, and a few other games. Delayed a little bit though as I have to RMA my monitor so I can't quite get in VR for a little bit. But it IS coming eventually!
      Considering the extremely variable nature of VRChat, I feel like that'll still be a decent 'benchmark' that'll give an idea of performance. For what it is worth, while I didn't do any hard benchmarking, from some brief playing around with it and occasionally checking my ingame FPS on the counter, I was getting a pretty solid 60-75FPS at max settings with unlimited mirror resolution in a public world with 15-20 people at normal(140 degrees, around 3.8k x 3.1k resolution) FoV. Safety settings all turned off. And that's pretty impressive from everything I have seen on VRChat performance.
      If I had the money for it, I'd love to get the 7900XTX and benchmark it, but that's outside of my means at this time.

    • @TruExFlame

      @@Omniwhatever That's pretty nice, I currently play VRchat with MSAA turned down from 8x (which is default) to 2x. I figured that when the headset resolution is already so high, you really don't need MSAA to be turned all the way up, and it sure helps the performance a lot when it's lowered.
      Whatever you decide to do, it's always good to see more VR benchmarks, there are far too few that are not just MS Flight simulator or Racing.

    Thanks for this vdo, I've been looking to confirm that I need the 4090 to finally run VR. I don't have a PIMAX... yet? I see most visors are at 90hz, do you think this is the best refresh rate or just another technology limit we are dealing with? I did see Pimax had another visor that had 110hz at same resolution.
    I have a Reverb G2 but its capped at 90hz.
    The MSRP of the 4090 is nothing to anyone who can afford a VR setup. One can also compromise on the flat monitor cost in lieu of getting the Best VR visor.
    I think most VR games are hamstringing themselves at the moment by downgrading graphics. VR won't be attractive to enough people until it can run Resident Evil like graphics at stable 120fps. Which might be very possible with lower resolution visor. The real question is, what resolution can be "enough". I mean, the real importance is the higher ppi so we no longer see the pixels, then tune resolution for best fps.
    After that , the holy grail will be a VR setup that doesn't require being tethered, so it would have to first be backpack size, and then finally all built into the headset.
    PS- looking at the raytracing on RE7, we need a 20% stronger GPU to get it to 90 fps stable. But then we have to also remember you are running very high resolution on the PIMAX.

    • @Omniwhatever
      @Omniwhatever  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks! Glad you found the video useful. To answer your first question. The reason most HMDs are at 90hz, is that is generally considered the minimum for where most find motion smooth enough to be 'immersive' on FPS/Hz in VR, according to some lab testing. VR is an insanely demanding medium, as even lower resolution HMDs, like the Index, are pushing pixels comparable or greater than 4k after supersampling for barrel distortion. Meanwhile, the G2 after supersampling is rendering more pixels in EACH EYE than a 4k monitor is. Pixel count alone is not the only factor in performance, but it is a major one. Driving those kind of resolutions is hard as hell to do above 90hz, even meeting 90hz can be a struggle in some games! The 4090, beast as it is, still had to get some help with stuff like FSR or lowering FoV in some games. Plus, getting better spec panels, like higher hz, translates to more expensive manufacturing, which translates to costlier products. There are some HMDs with above 90hz though. The Q2, the Index, the Vive Pro 2, the Pimax 5k Super. But, aside from the Vive Pro 2, and maybe the Q2, most of them are lower resolution. And good luck driving most stuff at 120hz on the VP2 without a 4090. This also goes in the graphic thing, because the best graphics in the world don't matter if you can't run it above 10FPS.
      I also disagree. I don't think that what VR needs to be 'mainstream', VR is a lot more than graphics. I think the coming form factors with things like pancake lenses AND having good cost will be what VR needs to really 'make it'. Hell, we've already seen the huge success of the Q2 due to the great price it had for so long. There's many things which go into VR, from clarity, FoV, FPS, etc... And the fact the Q2 sold as much as it did kind of proves we don't need to have everything be near lifelike graphics for it to sell well. VR Backpacks were actually a thing for a time and they... Sold pretty poorly. Yeah, admitedly, the Q2 has certainly cause some games to really noticeably regress to be built around it that hamstrung the PC versions. Hello, Sniper Elite VR and Onward. But many games still look good. A proper art style can be better than going for photo realism, depending on what you want to do.
      There's so much more to VR than just resolution, it's all about pixel density. The 8k X, for example, has 3840 x 2160 per eye, but it's slightly less sharper than the G2's 2160 x 2160 per eye. Because its field of view means the pixels are stretched out over a much wider area, 160 degrees vs the G2's tiny 99 degrees. If you had that same resolution of the Pimax compressed into the G2's FoV, you'd get a significantly higher pixel density. Heck, as a case and point, the upcoming Pimax Crystal has a similar total pixel count as the 8k X does, but at 110 degrees FoV it has a whopping 42PPD, over double what the 8k X has.
      We definitely can do better and get higher specs, there's ALWAYS better. But VR is kind of in a situation like flatscreen was when 4k monitors first came out. Very few things could properly drive them and GPUs sort of had to catch up to make the best usage of em. But, I think that, generally speaking, where VR is overall would be "good enough" to get people interested. I think it's mostly cost and form factor which is holding VR back from being more mass market, but it's already well on its way there. I say this as an enthusiast who's looking forward to the brick of the Pimax 12k due to how it seemingly has near everything, despite being gigantic compared to the pancake lenses form factor.
      DLSS is also coming to the RE mods, so stable 90hz without significant quality loss might be possible in the near future on the 8k X here! DLSS looks way better than FSR 1, in most cases.

    see now, this is the stuff people don't understand, GPUs really need to be tested in VR not just normal games. VR is a whole different test on the GPU and really matter with frame times and other crap. ye going from a 3090 to a 4090 in desktop games might give 20fps or 30fps more, but in VR its a huge leap in performance.

      Man it sure does. Back when I did this video I was a lot more basic on the metrics I got and little embarrassed of it now. Refined my process a lot for more recent videos to include some more information and better testing suite. There's not enough people around doing thorough VR benchmarks and wish we had some more! it's one of the places where the high end GPUs really matter. Even just going from something like 90FPS with dips to 70s to basically locked 90FPS feels soooo much better than you'd think it would in VR vs flatscreen.

I mostly want to play ACC or something similar if ACC is not playable. 3090 could grt before Christmas. I will use Pimax 8akx. What do you think? Should I waste my time with 3090 or go straight to 4090? I could resell 3090 for the same price I guess

    • @Omniwhatever
      @Omniwhatever  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've heard ACC is extremely, extremely poorly optimized for VR and the original AC plays much better. As for what I think, well depends a bit. Firstly, I really doubt you will be able to resell the 3090 for 1k by January. The 4080 will be out and AMD 7900XTX, which looks a lot stronger in rasterization than the 3090, will be out for 1k USD, and looks like it'll match the 3090 in ray tracing.
      Maybe wait and see what the 7900XTX offers. The Pimax 8k X IS currently incompatible with AMD GPUs, however perhaps it'll change with the next generation. If you won't be getting the GPU until close to Christmay though, why not just wait? Or wait and see what the market shapes up to be. If you're not in the best financial situation and you cop a 3090 TI for 900 or less, could be a decent buy. Or perhaps the 7900XTX will come in swinging. Then reassess the market conditions after it launches in December.

    Finally a review that makes sense. Reviewers benchmarking the 4090 at 1440p gtfo. VR is the ONLY use case that justifies buying that overpriced brick. Then again, I have an Index and the rtx 7900xtx will get me 90% of that performance for 60% of the price so I am finally switching to team red. But amd will likely release a 6950xt next year, which should surpass the 4090 and still be cheaper. So I'm likely upgrading when that drops. While ok for 4k,my 3080 hasn't exactly blown my mind in VR.

      The thing about VRChat is that it's really hard to do a proper comparative benchmark due to the nature of it and user created content. At least in what I'd say feels like a "real world" use case. Sure, I COULD go to a completely empty, graphically demanding world... But that wouldn't be too reflective of how most people play the game, would it? And I sure won't be finding identical lobbies of 10+ people I can use to compare the two cards.
      THAT SAID, I did play a little bit with it. At Normal FoV in a bit more demanding world with at least 20+ people, forgot exactly how many though, and maxed settings with mirror resolution set to unlimited and no MSAA, I was getting a pretty reasonable and fairly stable 60FPS+. So the 4090 definitely puts in some impressive world. The VRAM alone can be a lifesaver.

    question for ya. So I've been testing framerates in various games with my setup for VR. However, my gpu usage is always stuck around 60%. It doesn't ever get to 98% like your does here. Thermal throttling is definitely not the issue, as my temps stay within the limits. any ideas?

    • @Omniwhatever
      @Omniwhatever  ปีที่แล้ว

      That most likely indicates are you CPU bottlenecked, assuming you're not reaching your FPS cap that is. If you check my other RTX 4090 10 VR game benchmark video, there's a few times where I was CPU bound and you can see my GPU utilization drops to sometimes as low as almost 50% despite being below 60FPS. This happens, most notably, in the first VRChat world I showed off.
      Now, if you're reaching the FPS cap of your HMD, then that's just a case of your GPU doesn't have to work hard enough to be maxed out.

I only play sim racing (assetto corsa) and sometimes f1 2022, I bought myself a 3070 thinking, man now I have some headroom for at least a year or so! damn I was so wrong, the jump from a 1660 was quite noticable on gpu usage and textures, but for someone using a quest 2 like me, textures and details dont make much difference, I can ramp up just a tiny bit more the res of the quest 2 to like 2500 by 2100p per eye, I originally got this 3070 a few weeks ago just to eliminate the stutters on assetto corsa so I play online with peace of mind, but quickly realized that for playing f1 2022 I would need even more pawah,.. It would be a never ending story for me, since I dont plan to spend over 800usd for a card my best bet its second hand, I will have to wait until next year either the 3090 would be crazy cheap or I get rich to the point I dont care to throw 2000 bucks, since also the gpu sweet spot regarding price its around the 3070/80 (price wise) it feels so bad to spend significantly more for just a tiny bit extra performance

      That's kind of the point in most of the comparisons? Generally, I dialed up settings to the max for my comparisons and only turned them up if I had headroom(Like in Guildford Castle with FSR) and was limited by my refresh rate, if I even still had options to turn up. The point being to illustrate the difference when it's most likely to be GPU bound and how much further you can push the 4090 on the same settings than the 3090 TI.
      It wouldn't really be a fair or like for like comparison if I used different settings each time.
      If you're talking about the raw frame rate and that feeling different, that's not going to show up terribly well in the video. Go play anything capped at 30FPS and then 60 or higher even on flatscreen, you'll notice it though. ESPECIALLY in VR.

      It's a popular mod to use in VR because VR is extremely performance intensive and needs every bit of performance it can get. It usually entails a small hit to visual performance, but as you can see in the video it often leads to MASSIVE gains well worth the trade off.

    Reverb G2 low res? How come?

    • @Omniwhatever
      @Omniwhatever  ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't say it was low res, but that it's lowER resolution. And compared to the 8k X, which I was benchmarking, it is quite a bit lower. The 8k X has, before barrel distortion, 3840x2160 per eye vs the Reverb G2's 2160x2160 per eye, which is a biiiiiiig per eye difference. After barrel distortion, the G2's res is something like 3.1k x 3.1k, where the 8k X is like 5k x 3.1k. Normal FoV on the 8k X is a bit closer, around 3.9k x 3.1k, but is only moderately higher.
      Like I said, the 4090 will absolutely still be put to good use on the G2, but upgrading may not feel like as pressing a need, depending on what you play, if you're already on a 3090 or 3090 TI.

      @@mike_33gt Honestly, I think some of Pimax's problems are a bit exaggerated, but they are NOT for first timers in VR or those who are not willing to spend a good chunk of time troubleshooting and dialing things in. There's a lot of jank or lacking polish in places. When you get it set up and it works, it's great, but it can be hell for some people to get it working. My experience has been largely positive, I've had no problems in my year and a half of using my 8k X and it was a very easy set up, save for one issue that lasted a single day, but there are plenty of people who have lots of problem with Pimax and so I'm hesitant to recommend them outside of a certain type of people.
      The FoV, for sim racing though, is pretty huge, gives you a massive sense of speed you don't otherwise get. I know a guy who has a Pimax and does a lot of Assetto Corsa, he loves it after using stuff like the Index and Quest 2. My 8k X is also my personal favorite out of the 8 HMDs I have tried.
      I also must mention the 3090 TI has a known issue with several VR Headsets where it doesn't work with them, and that includes Pimax HMDs and I think the Reverb G2. You need a specific kind of DP extender to fix it, the Pimax one is quite expensive(LINDY 8k 1.4 extender) but I don't know if you need the same one for the G2. But you may need to add a chunk of extra money if you plan on getting the G2 or a Pimax HMD.
