I wrote Cynthia an email via her manager this past summer. I'm not sure if she ever got it because she was in the middle of The Color Purple, and I know how it gets when an actor is in the zone. But when Pulse happened, it really got me in the gut, a constant wave of insecurity and fear and sadness. At 31, it brought me back to being a young child, bullied and suicidal. All I could listen to for weeks afterward was her rendition of "I'm Here." It was really healing, and I was happy to see her play Celie before the show ended. Thank you, Cynthia, if you ever see this. You really embody the healing power of music and art.
Our healing is a long and ongoing process. Never ending really. I'm old enough to be your Father, and all the scars and wounds of my youth were ripped open with the Pulse shooting. I know I don't have to explain this to you and others who felt the same thing. Be at peace sweet man and know that you are never alone.
She is everything: she has the sweetest tone, she can belt (obviously), she has control, she interprets songs beautifully and she sweeps you away with her emotion.
