If you’re into staring at your picture disks or colored vinyl collections…go for the vertical.

Great video very interesting, embarrassed to say I have a few of these, but they're not too bad. I have the project vertical in white and I have the Denon with the weird lid. Both turntables sound great. I like the vertical turntable because it shows the record spinning in a vertical position which is cool and if you have colored your picture discs it looks even better. And the Denon I purchased because it records straight onto USB thumb drives in high-quality. Which then I would listen to on my laptop or in my car etc. etc. It's a good way to archive your old records without using a computer.

I must say those are some of the weirdest record players I've ever seen, but I did find a few of them rather interesting to look at. The third one you showed was rather fascinating with the floating turntable and I loved the one that had a fidget spinner like design. I absolutely agree with you on the subject of vertical record players. I really don't get why someone would want to play records vertically. Records are supposed to be played on a flat turntable IMO. I just don't understand the whole vertical idea at all. For a start the springed tonearm would surely have a heavier tracking force which would almost certainly cause groove damage to the record. I wouldn't play my vinyl on a vertical record player, ever.

“HWZQHJY” - did they get their brand name from an eye chart? “If you can read this, you don’t need glasses.”

I recall there was a turntable in the 1970's which had a three pointed platter instead of a round one. Suspect the quality would have been better than some of those shown in this video. Good video though.

The Crosley with the odd plinth...DON'T bother! There's a serious speed issue where at 33 it's way slower and at 45, it's ALMOST exactly 33.

Glad you are doing this vid I was hoping you would do something like this soon !! that Fuse vert TT with the colored record comes with a ceramic or a Audio tech cartridge ,it is more expensive with the mag cartidge I've seen this on there link ,it looks cool there is one also made by Pyle TT it looks nice but it only comes with the ceramic ,it sounds decentb I saw a vid on it by a guy who wanted to try it he liked it also Technoan did a vid on anothr type vertical TT the body is square on it it has the audio tech cartridge but he showed it tracked a little high for its spec if I remember its called the Gramovox record player it sounded ok but I found speaklers too small even when it has bass ports

Weirdest vintage turntable I've seen recently is the "ADC Accutrac +6" which has large square individual track buttons, and a weird egg-shaped remote sensor (yes it has a remote control!). Someday if YT revenue ever gets high enough will pick one of these up...

Some of the most bizarre turntables are at the extreme high end and go up to almost £500,000.00. one of the best I have seen on TH-cam is a turntable that had the longest tone arms. It had two of these tone arms and was made by the person who owned it.

  • @lisacromwell7770

It's not at all odd that expensive turntables come with low end carts. Those of us { Lisa's Dad } that lived back in the day know that high end turntables came with no cart. Everyone had their own idea of what cart was best so they left it out so you could chose your own. At least these folks included one you could use until you bought yours.

I wasn't around back then, but I am familiar with this. High end mountain bikes that can cost anywhere from $1500 to $5000+ come without pedals. They figure at this point, you know when pedals you like, and would just swamp them out immediately. The lesser but still good bikes, less than $1500, may come with cheaper plastic pedals. It's enough to get you going, but they know you will upgrade soon enough.

I have the pro-ject VTE with an OM20 stylus. Its a good beginner table. I only have it because I have no room to use a regular table in my room so it’s mounted on my wall to save some room. I use it on a schitt equalizer and preamp and the Sony ssc5 and a Yamaha receiver. (I do also have 2 1200’s but like I said I don’t have room for them.)

I listen to my records at night, not because of some "cleaner" power 🙄 but there are no ringing phones, no knocks at the door, no interruptions. When I am busy, I put the radio on.

Re: that first turntable having an AT3600 cartridge.
Why a cheap cartridge on a high-end turntable? Because the manufacturer figures you're probably going to swap it out anyway. It's typically one of the first 'tweaks' that's done to a turntable in that price range. Some people will go straight for an Ortofon, others prefer a Grado, etc. Put a cheap one in there, let the end user pick what cartridge he wants.
    Re: Crosley C3
This is one of those turntables I referred to a few days ago - the one where the specs say it has a synchronous motor, but it really just uses the same servo-type DC motor that's found in the A-T LP60, numerous other 'Hanpin' turntables, and most portable record players. The marketing agencies like to use buzzwords and impressive-sounding jargon. 'Synchronous' sounds impressive and all high-techy, so that's what they slap into the ad copy.

Having just the platter hover is stupid and won't work. The tonearm must be in the same frame of reference as the platter, or else there will be motion transferred to the stylus, and much more of it than if the platter was just attached to the same piece of material as the tonearm, like in a normal record player. And there will be added noise from platter levitation circuit, which would be comparable to motor noise. But added second time for no actual reason. Having the WHOLE device, plinth, tonearm, platter and all hover together as one item, that would insulate from floor/shelf vibrations really well. Like it would have four magnets that serve as legs, and it would levitate above them with only really soft cables hanging out of the back. Making the power and the outpot signals wireless is not impossible but would be very hard not to make extremely expensive and quite noisy.

There is a turntable made in Sweden which is round and the pickup cartridge sits inside the platter and the platter rotates in the opposite direction to a normal turntable called the Wheel by Miniot.

That last one weighs 1 GRAM?! Is it for dolls? LOL. The 3 speaker - How is it stereo; it must have unequal sound? What does speaker #3 do (which channel - the left, the right, or a mixture)? The speakers look small; if one more or one less speaker would it make a difference? (A million and one other questions) The red one - save money get the 'left facing' one lower on the page? It seems the same. The 'horn': 1 - if one wants sound at a different angle, change the player angle? 2 - Mono/unpleasant sound? The 'auto sensor' speed - how and why? LOL. (Helpful hint - usually (unless a 12 inch single) most 12 inch sized records = 331/3 RPM. and 7 inch = 45 RPM. Helpful hint - not criticism!).

LIKE number 7 which is sheer Heaven.
Those are some weird turntables and record players indeed and even that Denon turntable with the idiotic, impractical dust cover has received bad reviews because Denon turntables are not what they used to be. I have Denon turntables from the 90's and early 2000's that are highly sought after models that retailed for $700 or more (I paid far less) in 90's dollars (probably $1,000 units in today's dollars) that are far superior to the junk Denon is making now.
I had to laugh at many of those other record players that are obviously junk (Beware, record collectors that are new to the hobby) and the Chinese-to-English translations to promote the features were hilarious. :)

I don’t know 🤷‍♀️ of any weird record players. Even transcription record players. Other than the one ☝️ that ejects ⏏️ your records clear across the room. That’s been 🐝 at least a couple months ago. Like 👍 the first record player ya showed at the first of this video, yes 👍, is of unconventional design. Some record players work by magnets 🧲. The vertical record players do NOT have extremely high tracking as one might think.
They use a counter balance and a spring to do the job, the counter balance zeros the arm out and the spring pulls it forward lmao
