    I agree with you that Crosley/Victrola/etc. suitcase players and all-in-one systems don't sound good, but they will not damage records in normal use -- the popular claim of them "chewing up the grooves" is a debunked myth. And in direct comparisons, the AT-LP60(X) and similar turntables can sound nearly as good as more expensive turntables. A pricier turntable will give you sturdier construction, more features, and more upgradeability, but not necessarily a significant improvement in sound quality, at least with the stock cartridge and stylus they come with.

    • @mattmcgourty7971
      @mattmcgourty7971 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Someone did a comparison between the entry level audio technica and a crosley and there was actual a noticeable difference after many listens. The tone arms are way to heavy and you can't adjust a counterweight so they degrade the grooves quicker. They don't "chew them up" as some people claim but they definitely aren't for constant listening, really only for those who are flipping vinyl as a side hustle.

    • @vwestlife
      @vwestlife 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mattmcgourty7971 Tests of these suitcase players have shown virtually no audible wear after 50 plays, and most people never play their records more than 40 to 50 times. So it's a non-issue.

    Having spend many years experimenting with the belt-drive machines: Ariston RD80, RD11, Linn Sondek, Origin Live Ultra, Thorens TD160 and TD125. Then around 15 years ago I bought a Garrard 401, mounted it properly and I am now using a 12" Origin Live Conqueror arm and OL Aladdin cartridge, with music man cartridge spacer. The Garrard was refurbished with new springs and has an upgraded bearing, and damping rings on the platter and currently I use the OL platter mat. I am satisfied with the sounds it produces and it has been totally reliable and has cost around GBP6000 all in.

    The thing about DJ turntables is that they're robust enough to have a high survival rate and long lifespan so you can get good deals on older models used. I recently picked up a Gemini PL-2410 (basically a Technics 1200 clone with a fancy shell and digital pitch bender added based on the Gemini PL-2000) for $100 and tuned it up. I think a combination of the garnish coloring and the fact the height-adjustment ring on the tonearm needed unseized made it hard for the consignment store it was in to unload it even though it's a rare model.
    They also have many of the features you'd look on a high-end table like direct-drive and good anti-skate (needed for bassy EDM and rap music) in addition to pitch controls to fine-tune the speed without messing with adjustment pots if need be.

    Its been a long time since I spun vinyl and my last turntable was a VPI. Previously I had a Linn Sondek LP12 now selling used for an average of about $2,000 dollars here. Back in the day, I was reading Brit Audio magazines and noticed the price discrepancy between prices in England and the US due to stunt import fees. One day I called a dealer in England and asked if he would sell me one (This being a violation of contract not to sell out of country) He responded by asking for my credit card number and the table arrived at LAX via DSL Perfectly set up and making nice sounds once installed at home. I also took the opportunity to purchase a Syrinx (Sp?) tone arm and the reason for that now escapes me.

      Yes, the old problem. You're paying for the truck drivers to whisk that hifi around the country too. Just look at the price difference between the Rega Planar 1 in the UK and USA. Scary stuff.

    For me the entry level deck of choice has to be the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Evo carbon fibre arm and the Ortofon 2M Red cartridge all for £449:00. This is one of my current turntables, I have it in my study, and I think it’s one of the best value that I have ever heard. It’s played through a Quad 44/405 amp into Mission 770 Freedom Speakers.
    My Mid price turntable is the Technics SL-1500C, priced at £899:99, a stripped down version of the SL-1200 family of decks that found fame and fortune for some, as the deck of choice for the Club/DJ community, it also comes with the Ortofon 2M Red cartridge although I have upgraded the stylus to the 2M Blue. I have this in my drawing room again going through a Quad 44/405 amp but this time with KEF LS50 Meta speakers.
    My choice for an elite turntable would have to be a Linn Klimax LP12, one of the finest turntables around. The Klimax LP12 is the result of a relentless pursuit of musical excellence by Linn that has continued for over 40 years and represents the pinnacle of vinyl reproduction today, includes an Urika internal phono stage, an Ekos SE precision tonearm, and a Kandid moving coil cartridge, this can be yours for just £18,870:00! I can’t justify spending almost £19k on a turntable, sadly.
    Don’t spend £19,000 on a turntable, if you have it spent £1,000 on a turntable and £18,000 on records, you’ll be much happier!

    Hi Paul You had me laughing out loud with some of your descriptions, brilliant stuff 😄 . As I’ve stated on your previous review on T.T I’m using the rega P3 . With a rega separate speed controller and a rega phono amp . This is probably not the best way to go from in the beginning, as I’ve spent the equivalent price of a P6 . But my budget just wouldn’t go that far initially, so over time ie 3 years I find myself from my perspective in a very nice place . As advise to anyone considering buying a turntable. There is always going to be something that if you just spend that bit more you will get something better. This of course is true, but if you can. Have a budget and stick to it. This is one area in hifi that can be improved by upgrading , cartridges, record mats etc . 👍

    Used Technics SL1200 with budget audiophile cartridge. For about $600 you get a table and that will last forever and sonic wise bests others on this list

I also inherited his old Bush record player which I think is from the 80's. I don't really listen to much modern music so probably won't be buying much new stuff, but I'd love to add to my collection. I'm a newbie to this sort of thing, so would a new turntable really be beneficial?

  • @LudiusQuassas
    @LudiusQuassas 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I'm more of an aspiring collector, and while I appreciate sound quality, I would rather go for a feature-focused deck that can decently play any type of record from any era. Although I may say your argument about features vs. focus really got me thinking...
    So vertical adjustment, pitch control, and great emphasis on a variety of speeds would be musts for me.
    Still, great video! A buyer's guide is a nice thing to have, as there are some turntables on this list that I didn't even know existed.

    Nice job, very entertaining but there’s so many choices. I like my Technics 1500c with a Nagaoka mp200 and a black funk firm mat and locking interconnects. I have a Denon 301mk that sounds a little better but the suspension collapsed and needs to be repaired. The built in phono preamp is mediocre. I use the phono stage of the Denon pma a100 which sounds excellent and requires less cables. I like keeping the dust cover on, dust is bad for vinyl. I used to always remove it on my Rega Planar 2 from the early 80’s. I don’t even take off my speaker grilles on my Canton Vento 7’s, to me they sound a little better with them on. There are so many ways to tune the sound like the IKEA cutting boards under my speakers. If I was in market now I might take a look at the new Project Carbon Pro. The Technics manufacturing and build quality is hard to beat with a few mods in my opinion.

    My wife and I just purchased an AT-LPW50PB. It was the best turn table available at our local record store here in NW OH and higher priced than we had originally agreed to.
    We set it up last night and listened to three albums (amp is in our Yamaha RX-A780 receiver).
    We were both in love with the sound. The table is beautiful and obviously we've never owned anything like this before so it is a very special purchase for us. Our previous turn table was the Technics LP-5 which we enjoyed quite a bit as well. It is currently awaiting some maintenance which is why we decided to get a newer model.

    I have the same concerns you mention with buying a, "DJ Turntable". It's built to be rugged in the environment of a club and sound quality is a secondary emphasis. I'm not a DJ and don't plan to take it outside my home but I like the looks of the Technics 1200GR. (My current turntable is a Toshiba SR355 that I purchased in the mid '70's. )I figure at that price point I will be getting audiophile sound quality. Especially with an Ortofon 2M Black. Comment??
    My other choice is the Pro-ject X2. Same price point. None of the fiddley bits. I'm torn between the two. Don't want the Technics slider but I like the other fiddley bits. The Pro-ject looks very plain. I also worry about belt drives being able to maintain an accurate speed and how often will the belt wear out and have to be replaced. How will I know if the belt is wearing out?

    • @claudec2588
      @claudec2588 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Post Script: The other advantage of the Technics 1200GR is the ability to swap out head shells. I can use the Ortofon 2M Black for my mint condition records and swap in an Ortofon 2M Red for records that are less than mint conditions.

      Go with a GR. It's amazing and I don't think, at it's price point, that there's anything better for around the $2000 mark. Ignore the slider, and just know it's there if you ever get a record that was recorded at the wrong speed or something. It's a big step up from the old 1200's. I have a Nagaoka MP-500 on mine. It's just some solid ass fine Japanese engineering.

      @TheAudiophileMan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Claude - I did do a review of the GR and thought that it was a good 'project'. It didn't feel finished in terms of its sonic potential. So I spent time tweaking and modding it and the sound improved tremendously. You will be adding a heap of cash to it, sure but that can be done when funds allow. In general terms, my comments can be applied to the 'G' too: theaudiophileman.com/technics-sl-1200g-turntable-review/
      As for belt drives, I've used them all my life and never head an issue. I've changed a couple of belts but that's only because I've hammered the poor things because my job pushes hardware to the limits. Even then, the belts cost pennies and take 0.3 seconds to change :) You know if a belt has worn because the sound will distort, the singer will sound drunken and slurred, etc. Modern designs don't (shouldn't) have speed variation issues and modern belts will last for many years given normal playing conditions.

    Simple truth is, with a Roon subscription, a Tidal Sub and a Naim Unity Atom, I'm enjoying and playing more music now than I ever have and I'm facing the facts that I'm now strictly a digital consumer. Several reasons for this, including a smaller house than I'd like, and health issues that mean I cant jump up and change track or volume as often as I would want. The digital realm has solutions for my situation then, but I do miss the physicality of using my record player and albums and I do envy the younger generations who might be playing with a turntable for the first time.

    • @TheAudiophileMan
      @TheAudiophileMan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's always a possibility that it might cause issues with vinyl mainly because of parts quality not being the best. Also, I would always have - at the very least - an Audio-Technica 3600L as a common or garden budget cartridge. Often though, suitcase turntables don't even have that. They have a cartridge of unreliable parentage. At that point, I don't trust the design, the cantilever or the stylus tip to treat your vinyl groove well. So, some of these Crosley types will have a 3600L, others won't. But even the 3600L designs may sit in arms with extremely dodgy tonearm bearings so you'll get excessive vibration, again, that translates to the arm, the cartridge, the stylus and your poor old grooves. So...yea. Not a fan.

    Hello, I plan to buy the Funk Gett2. What other accessories do I need to buy? What sizes? (acromat /cartridge/etc???)
    I am new to turntables :) Thanks

      That depends on your budget and the rest of your hifi system. The basic model is a good start, though.

    I picked up a vintage Technics SL-D4. It's a direct drive linear tracking turntable. Paid just $50. I've no experience with a p-mount TT or anything linear, but I'm enjoying it. I plan to change the tonearm belt and to clean and lube for best results... The guy I bought it from put a brand new Technics needle in it... . It's a little scratched up on the exterior, so it'll hang out in my office. Looking for something more attractive for my living room, so here I am. Have to say, I didn't realize how rare it is to see auto return and auto stop. Looking at the lack of those features I'm impressed by this little vintage unit.

    Disagree with some of the comments about DJ turntables ( except the belt drive & low cost direct drive ones). Especially concerning the upper end direct drives such as the Reloop turntables. The Reloop rp7000 MK2 is an exceptional hi fi turntable, if tweaked with a Funk Firm Achromat mat, & with an Audio Technica magnesium headshell, together with an Audio Technica AT-VM95SH cartridge fitted. It runs my similarly tweaked Technics SL1200gr close for excellent sound quality.
    Although it's correct to say the tonearm is important, I would add that making sure the turntable is properly situated & level is as important, which can affect the turntable performance significantly. The tonearm on the Reloop is surprisingly capable ( with tight bearings, a damped arm tube & height adjustable for proper vta/sra setting ), as long as no low compliance moving coils cartridges are used. Coupled with its rugged build quality ( that is far more durable than equivalent priced belt drives), the Reloop rp7000MK2 could prove to be one of the best value for money record decks currently available.

    I am mulling over whether to buy a turntable. As I have a condition called 'essential tremor', my hands shake a little and I'd be wary of using a fully manual unit and risk failing to place the tonearm precisely on the record surface. Could you recommend a semi-auto turntable for someone like me whose considering dipping their toe into the water? Many thanks!

      @TheAudiophileMan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi William - a fully automatic mechanism might be better so you don't have to place the stylus on the groove. A 'semi' will only lift the arm when the stylus reaches the end of the groove. Do you have a budget please?

      @@TheAudiophileMan Thank you for your advice. As I'm a newcomer to vinyl I'd not be thinking of spending more than around £600. I don't know whether this totally undershoots this type of equipment but I suspect it might, in which case I'll take your advice and carry on saving!

    So the Gett! And/or the Nad C588 are the best under £2500ish, if I’m interpreting your choices correctly?
    Because the Michell is £1800 without a tonearm or cartridge and there’s nothing else in the huge gap between £700 & £1999... or is this an oversight?

      I wouldnt analyse the hardware list in this video too much, Anthony. Its not my 'Best of' or a 'Top 10'-type thing. It's an awareness and merely an adjunct to the main Guide which proceeds it. I'll be doing more specific Guides of a less general nature in the future. This was just an introduction aimed at beginners.

      There's nothing *new* and (allow me to quickly follow up that statement) worthy of purchasing or one that I would recommend to you. Be wary of any new Chinese-built effort that you might find on Amazon or similar. What I would recommend - but it won't be cheap - is to go vintage.
      My recommendation would be any Dansette-type design (you know the type I mean, I'm sure. Built around the 1960s/70s, luggable, all-in-one with an amplifier and mono speaker in a sturdy case, etc.
      The best are the Hacker designs. Try to find one with a Garrard turntable insert. BSR designs are fine and still worth buying but, if you have the choice.... Also, try to find one that's been properly serviced and from a source who offers good communication. Ask lots of questions about the item, exactly what's been serviced, grab lots of images of the product (inside and out).
      Extract assurances that the turntable won't arrive in the post as a bundle of firewood. That is, make sure they pack it properly during shipping. Tell the to talk you through how they will package it - be completely anal about it.
      I've seen samples on eBay for £200+.

    I was thinking of three different turntables. The Fluancce RT 85, the Uturn orbit custom With an acrylic platter and 2M blue cartridge, and the Duel CS518 manual turntable. I was hoping that the Dual wouldmake the list. But they didn't, so I'm wondering if they have fallen out of grace within hi-fi and/or audiophile circles? when was the requirements I had for a new turntable was 78 RPM and a bayonet Connector on the tonearm. I'm visually impaired and doing small detailed work like putting a cartridge on a tonearm and getting the wires all hooked up can be a real pain, so I wanted the bayonet connector for that reason. So does Dual still make a decent turntable?

    • @TheAudiophileMan

      There are better quality Duals out there - just haven't been able to grab one for review. I'll keep working on it.

    I bought the auto-technica lp120 for the 78rpm speed and the lack of adjustment to the arm makes vta impossible for most cartridges.

    My first and still is Turntable = Pro-Ject Debut Carbon. Sound quality is good ( can’t compare though) , easy to install and easy to use. Came with Ortofon 2MRed. Really enjoy using it. Only downside is if you need to play 7” EP , u got to remove the platter and move the rubber to change the speed. Anyway I only have like 5 pieces of those 7” and my main records are 12” LPs.

    • @77bjornw77
      @77bjornw77 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I recommend the Pro-Ject Speed Box S. It will let you switch between 33 and 45 rpm without you having to move the belt. It will also give you a more stable speed. Well worth the money. That, an acrylic platter and perhaps a 2M Blue stylus for your cartridge and you have a very nice upgrade path. :)

    Hi. Loved the video. Here in Singapore the Rega P1, AT Lp5x, project debut carbon dc (with some discount) is priced almost the same. 550-600 Singapore dollar. Which as per you will be the best purchase of “sound quality” is the only criteria. I felt your suggestion would be rega P1 , but wanted to ask as the project debut carbon is priced quite close to the rega and would that be a better purchase
