What I find interesting is that a few of these characters in Puyo seem to take design aspects from both versions of Madou, and in the case of Arle, her outfit in most Compile games is actually a lot closer to the PC-98 version than the MSX version.
Never tell a Sorcery Saga/Puyo Puyo fan about: -Schezo's decapitation -The Puyo Puyo Quest localization fiasco of 2023 -The MSX2 versions predating the PC98 versions
Carbuncle just being there, exactly identical in all three versions. Like, they didn't even scale him up with the higher resolution. That's just... So him.
I think the only reason why the PC-98 version is so dark and creepy is because they were able to have adult content on the platform, so they decided to have a go at it afaik. It really doesn't fit with compiles artstyle much either and is just unneccessarily weird and creepy
@@darkhorse744 If you're looking for the song name, this specific version is called "Demo of Puyo Puyo". Other well known versions include "Try Out" or Floors 1-10 from Madou Monogatari I and "Memories of Puyo Puyo" from Puyo 1
I'm guessing you found the exact track name by now but for anyone else that was looking for this by name: - Boss Dialogue (Puyo Puyo 20th Anniversary) see also: - TRY OUT (Madou Monogatari 1-2-3) - Memories of Puyo Puyo (Puyo Puyo)
Yes and no. The sprite size is more or less the same on MSX2 and OPP. But since PC98 has a far great resolution that would mean if you played all these games on the same monitor Carbuncle would be smaller, yeah.
I learned something today. For the longest times I had this artstyle backwards. Interesting that some of the later spinoffs would do a middle ground of both the cutesy and semi dark look. I guess that criticism towards 3 GG isn't totally called for! All seriousness that one certainly was an oddball.
I wish they kept Zoh Daimaoh's PC98 design SOMEWHERE because I think fighting an realistic elephant is funny when you're playing Puyo. Come on, look at Suketoudara and tell ME that it's out of place to play a children's falling block puzzle game with it.
Personally I love both the iconic cartoony style along with the presence of the more realistic counterparts. I feel like switching between the two styles depending on the seriousness of the scene or whatever would actually fit the series really well lol. And we can all agree that they all beat the sega style
@kirbyvskirby fair, I don't hate the sega style but to me with MM being a humorous play on RPG tropes the compile era visuals are perfect and align with the spirit of the series better. Sega stuff is stylish for sure but I think it's more polarizing of a style and keeps people from trying the games (which is dumb but people are shallow)
@@bivisbuns I wouldn't worry about it. Would people be more likely to buy a Tetris-like game if it looked more like Dragon Quest? Or Sonic? Or other examples? Would Puyo Puyo Sun do as well in the US and Europe if it released untouched up back in the 90s? Or would they be turned off because 2 girls and a guy in a white dress are front and center on the box? I think it's a case-by-case thing. And we're not gonna get everybody, nor should we.
@kirbyvskirby yeah, you're not wrong. The older stuff probably wasn't gonna sell back then one way or another (although Mean Bean Machine is well-liked / remembered for sure in the US at least). I do think making the wider audience understand the legacy via a switch collection of the classics or something would go a long way. Never gonna get everyone, but the games are good enough to at least give it a try. Perhaps just wishful thinking on my part though

Some characters like Jaan are from PC98. Fudoushi stuck around from PC98 too.

it feels like all of skele t's soul was ripped out of his body in the PC98 version
Suke's always been okay, people are just mean.
Ikr 😭
No flexing suke 💪🐟
Witch casually temporarily cosplayed as Kikimora for the PC98 games
She's also the only reason the background is beige.
Suketoudara essay hype!!?!??!??!
Why are none of us talking about how they designed Sukiyapodes in madou 1-2-3 pc98😭
Carbuncle just being there, exactly identical in all three versions. Like, they didn't even scale him up with the higher resolution.

I do not endorse the fish video essay
The last part seems like something my friend would send me at night time

MSX has adult content too, some of the PC-98's eroge was released in MSX too
There's something so appealing about that late 80's early 90's semi-realistic anime visual style. Reminds me of first Shin Megami Tensei games.
@KeyleeTamarian what if Madou Monogatari/Puyo Puyo had a crossover with Godzilla?
PC-98 version is too brutal and scary to play though I'm already adult...
People assuming that Madou is Grimdark and Puyo made it lighter is p annoying.
Also, what song is playing in the background?
One of PP20th Manzai cutscene. Which is a remix of not only the first few floors in Madou 1, it's also the Manzai music for the first 8 stages in OPP.
@@kirbyvskirby Gotcha, thanks.

They should've kept the PC98 design of Suketoudara smh...
carbuncle's so small in pc98 !! :sobbing: :sobbing:

Suketoudara's PC-98's sprite is cursed

RIP, MMPC98!Sasoriman
He didn't make it in that said port-
When is the essay coming out
Give it time.
So basically…the PC98 version gave the characters the “Ugly Sonic” treatment.
If you wanna call them that sure, I won't stop you, but that is harsher language I would use.

I kinda like both Sega and Compile era puyo art, though Compile's just barely edges above it since i feel like it has a Doujin-soft/90's anime charm.
The PC98 version is the weird one actually. Playing it is also kinda f*cked up sometimes
I still love harpy
Teehee
😁👍
The PC-98 version looks so bad and bland oml what happened
I wouldn't go that far but yeah.
