    I think that's a really important part of Madou, especially in early Madou games like 1-2-3.
    Yonemitsu, the writer for the first Madou games, stated how Madou was created as an antithesis of RPGs of the time, with the series starring a female protagonist going on mundane everyday adventures rather than a hero going on a grand quest to save the world. (I linked the blogpost where he talked about this in my initial post, but that comment seems to have been flagged or something...)
    Although Yonemitsu left Compile and didn't work on the series afterwards, I think that tone stayed as an important aspect of the series, even if the stakes did get significantly more dire, especially in later games.

    Madou Monogatari's tone feels kinda like Kirby from how you described it. You have the occasional Zero's eyeball being gorged out of his head, and there's are sure as hell implications and darker stuff in unseen lore, but it's generally light-hearted and cutesy.
    This is ultimately how I've always seen the series myself, even before seeing this video, so I'm glad I was more or less correct.

    Thanks for making this, guys. I think it's really important we all learn to appreciate the series for what it is more than for the rumors around it, ahaha. I personally love how weird and silly this series is and wouldn't wanna have it any other way.

    So basically, all the dark moments are Schezo's fault?
    Also, to me its a game series like Mother, Super Paper Mario, Undertale, Kirby etc.
    Cute looks and beginnings, but a darkness beneath

    I think the best comparison for Madou is about… in line with a lot of 90s RPGs, lol.
    Sometimes you have a moment that by all accounts would be horrifying, such as anything related to Jenova in FF7… then seconds later you'd be breeding adorable Chocobo to race. It was just the standard for these types of games made by Japan. :P

    • @kirbyvskirby
      @kirbyvskirby  ปีที่แล้ว

      I can see it. Though as someone who's currently on my first FF7 playthrough, Jenova itself isn't that scary to me. It's more it's influence.
      That could still change. Probably midway through Disc 2 now.

      @@kirbyvskirby I think there's also this kinda claustrophobic, isolated element to early Madou that makes people (mainly westerners) feel more uncomfortable compared to other RPGs. Which isn't a bad thing at all. It's very unique.

    If Schezo's decapitation is meant to be a light-hearted joke, why is the art so grotesque that it clashes with many of the goofy cartoonish bits? The idea that it's played for laughs kinda makes it more disturbing, like Arle doesn't really care about brutally slaughtering everything she encounters in a dark labyrinth. Maybe I'm just stupid because I haven't played the games, but that seems a bit disturbing.

    • @kirbyvskirby
      @kirbyvskirby  ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I don't think Fred said it's a lighthearted joke, but even if he did it's still a joke. And most people don't know that because it's in Japanese and it looks disturbing.
      It depends on the person but the more grotesque imagery can lead to more humor as the jokes and the visuals just don't clash. But if you can't understand the language all you can see are the grotesque visuals.
      You expect Puyo Puyo to be wacky because it looks more wacky. PC98 Madou doesn't look Wacky and to some, that can catch them off guard when it does do something wacky.

    Honestly all I want is for more aspects of Madou to be explored like especially Lilith in PPT3 Similar to Ex and Squares. Also I be very happy if Schezo and Serilly interact and if they like each other (especially Serilly) since I just read the Waku Waki Puyo Puyo Dungeon Manga and their only interaction is really cute

    Not very familiar with Madou and Puyo but I also recall someone mentioning a official suplementary material where is stated that everyone in the world died in a fight between arle and god, and yhe current world is actually a copy of the destroyed one
    Is that true? because that alone already is way darker than any rumor ever conceived about the series

      Man it's been a while since I've heard about that.
      If memory serves that was something an infamous novel True/Shin Madou Madou Monogatari proposed for its timeline. It wasn't even in one of the 9 novels it's just a timeline included into the first one.
      Not canon.

    I like Madou's artstyle way more. Also, a more gritty artstyle, even if its lighthearted can change your overall feeling of a game. It doesnt matter if the events happening in Madou were lighthearted, the artstyle made it feel more dark. In contrast, I have never once taken anything in the current puyo puyo world seriously, simply because everything is way to cutesy. I love puyo puyo by the way, so Im not coming from a position of hate.

    • @kirbyvskirby
      @kirbyvskirby  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Please name the specific Madous. Because they are more diverse you then you seem to think. You're casting a broad umbrella by just saying you like Madou.
      It's like saying you like Anime art style. It doesn't narrow anything down.
      Or saying you like how Marvel vs Capcom looks. Like do mean 1, 2, 3, Infinite?
      It doesn't narrow anything down.

    • @lionheart1607
      @lionheart1607 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Neo kirbyvskirby / Mod Mamono To be more specific, I mean the 90's anime aesthetic "might have spelled that wrong" comes across as more serious; not always; than this rather low effort bubbly artstyle it has going on now.

    • @kirbyvskirby
      @kirbyvskirby  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@lionheart1607 So I asked an artist I know, because I had a hunch calling the current style "low-effort" would be an insulting. Putting aside so few art is actually low effort.
      She said she found that EXTREMELY insulting. All caps.
      She's been able to draw 90s anime for multiple years now. And has been trying the current Puyo artstyle for a long time now and she's still not there.
      I asked her if that's because the Puyo style is so definable as its own thing that it's more noticeable if you make a mistake. She said EXACTLY. All caps. My hunch is correct and I'm not even an artist.
      She also said this:
      "The Puyo artstyle we current have was made because it's NOT DISTRACTING DURING GAMEPLAY
      Sun is actively harder because the details in the art distract you from chaining
      Hence why Yon doesn't have cut-ins on the field.
      The current style also makes the characters look better when animated with methods that don't drop the framerate
      If their designs had more superflous detail, then the method needed to animate spells would be more resource intensive
      And the games might start dropping frames during hectic gameplay on lower spec machines"
      ~Nenilein
      All good points.
      You are entitled to your opinion feel free to prefer any style you want I won't stop you. But if you can't form that opinion well, and you can only strengthen your points by knocking things down, things like this happen. It comes across more like excuses then arguments or genuine appreciation for the things you like.

    • @lionheart1607
      @lionheart1607 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Neo kirbyvskirby / Mod Mamono Did you read what that artist was telling you? It seems like it proves one of my points. This person basically said that this new artstyle is a limitation to not distract players when they are playing the game. It is worse on purpose for gameplay reasons. Which I can understand. I personally would love a puyo puyo game that looks more like puyo puyo sun or puyo puyo 4. The "low effort" comment might have been a bit extreme, as I said I like puyo puyo quite a bit, even though I'm bad at it. I must again reiterate that my critique is coming from a place of love, not bitterness. Hell, I found your channel because I love Puyo puyo's strange lore and backstories.

    • @kirbyvskirby

      @@lionheart1607 (If you notice I never put your love for Puyo on trial here. I believe you.)
      Contrary what you may think I'm not being adversiral here, I just like better arguments. You can like what you like.
      But you also didn't fully read my response. I think that's a decent counterargument. But you still have those other points to content with.
      Also if it's a limitation, why's is it harder to draw? And they redo all art next game anyway.
      I'm dropping this conversation here. Because I've said all I wanted to say.
      Also the artist said: "If Puyo artstyle is that easy to draw, then do it."
      And I'm pretty sure she also means make it look convincing.
