- As part of its plan to electrify its portfolio from 2021 onward, INFINITI will reveal a new Project Black S prototype in Paris, showcasing how Formula One® dual-hybrid electric powertrain technology can be deployed in a road car.
Following the 2017 INFINITI Project Black S design study, the new hybrid electric prototype illustrates the brand's commitment to developing exciting high-performance electrified powertrains, drawing on expertise from across the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance.
The Project Black S prototype fuses high-performance dual-hybrid technology with INFINITI's award-winning VR30 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo engine. Its unique energy recovery system (ERS) contributes to greater power and torque than the engine upon which it is based. The dual-hybrid powertrain prototype generates 420 kW - equivalent to 563 hp or 571 ps, whereas the conventional VR30 engine produces 298 kW (400 hp / 405 ps). The power to weight ratio is estimated to be 235W/kg, achieving 0-100 km acceleration under four seconds.
The Black S designation represents the highest level of performance, dynamic capability, effective aerodynamics and intelligent energy management offered by INFINITI. The prototype is based on the Q60 RED SPORT 400 sports coupe and has been developed together with the Renault Sport Formula One Team.
Roland Krueger, Chairman and Global President at INFINITI, comments: "INFINITI has reached another milestone on its road to electrification. Building on the strength and success of the electric vehicle expertise of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance, INFINITI is showing the Project Black S, a high-performance prototype with F1 technology resulting from collaboration within the Alliance.
"The Project Black S represents the very top end of electrification in the Alliance portfolio, and is another example of INFINITI's entrepreneurial spirit on its journey to electrification from 2021 onward. Project Black S utilizes high power and smart energy management from advanced powertrains, a thrilling dynamic capability on road and track, and a performance-oriented aesthetic. A collaborative venture between INFINITI and the Renault Sport Formula One Team, the Project Black S prototype is a testbed for new ideas and technologies, demonstrating how our Alliance partnerships could make our ambitious visions a reality," Krueger added.
Forging a path towards performance-oriented vehicle electrification
Engineered in collaboration between INFINITI and the Renault Sport Formula One Team, and under development specifically for road use, the Project Black S prototype features a world's first dual-hybrid powertrain technology and represents the latest development initiative by INFINITI to electrify its cars.
The prototype's powertrain employs three motor generator units (MGU). A single MGU-K ('K' stands for 'kinetic') unit harvests kinetic energy from braking. Uniquely, the engine's twin electric turbochargers are fitted with two MGU-H ('H' for 'heat') units, to harvest heat energy from exhaust gases. This enables the powertrain to generate electrical power under both braking and acceleration.
Cross-Alliance collaboration optimizes Project Black S aerodynamic efficiency
Project Black S represents the ultimate expression of INFINITI DNA. The development prototype balances the organic, artistic design of the Q60 sports coupe with greater aerodynamic efficiency and high levels of downforce with a functional motorsport-inspired performance aesthetic.
Partnering with the Renault Sport Formula One Team has also given INFINITI access to more specialized development technologies, including advanced digital validation tools for optimizing the car's aerodynamics.
This expertise is no more evident than in the high-tech design of the rear wing, validated by Renault Sport Formula One Team's aerodynamicists and finished in carbon fiber. The wing has a similar aerodynamic profile to the Renault Sport Formula One Team's Monza wing, which provides a relatively low level of downforce for a Formula One car around one of the faster circuits in the sport's calendar. For a development vehicle based on a homologated road car, the impact is significant. The digital modelling technology allowed for subtle changes to the shape and proportions of the wing, which now offers a fine-tuned compromise between maximum straight-line stability and high traction under cornering.

i love japan so much it hurts, I fucking love their cars- like- i can't even explain it. I'm a valet in Columbus. i've driven audis, mercedes, bmws, fords, chevvys.... there's just nothing like Japanese cars. they're beautiful, strong, and well balanced. and, THIS CAR? i feel like a child seeing superman in the flesh for the first time. this is my supra, my GTR. this is the one I want.

Alex Palacios ya. Infiniti GTR hybrid. The tech has been there forever, just surprised that Infiniti has never taken advantage of the GTR development. The GTR is so played out and has look dated for the past 5+ years. This Infiniti has some great lines and dimension, although I am sure the rear wing would never make it to production (which would be fine with me, even if it is functional).
It has some similar elements, but this Infiniti looks a hell of a lot more beautiful than the GTR. I'm pretty much fully erect looking at this beautiful beast. I'm gonna have to stop being a slacker and start getting that bread so I can get one of these and die happy.

The car looks great. It really does. For those who are wondering about the cheap look of the wing or the deletion of it, it has his purpose for being there. If Infinity teamed up with the Formula One to design this car, in the rear spoiler if anyone had noticed have two slits in at the top and the bottom what for small opening Gap allowing the air to pass through. The reason for this is to allow disruption air and the air to flow more easily. Also forcing the rear-end tightly to the ground as what a formula car would do. That Wing is based off of IndyCar. Basically the whole car is based off of an Indy race car.

Bruce Anderson based on F1 car, not Indycar (although Indycar chassis do have similar tech). There is a reason they had Renault F1 team to work on it

After all the hype and videos on it I predict it will 100% go into production but we wont see it till very late 2019 maybe even mid 2020.I can see it selling for 75-85 k but with 563hp it will be well worth it.This car will appeal to every generation and sell incredibly well.
85k-100k. It will compete with the Lexus lc500 which is priced up there. 563hp is gtr levels of performance. It's going for 100k

In my opinion, this is WHAT the GTR should of looked like. I love this tail light and the GTR’s tail light. I never really the G’s headlight. Such a truly amazing and beautiful car.

it'll eat up the used r35 market, i'm pretty sure that's their goal. you buy one of these new or a used r35, the new car will always make more sense unless the customer is just a diehard r35 person and can't afford a new one.
@@DutchOrbit thats one way to look at it but considering the guy who may buy a used R35 will have the whole world of tunner parts available to him/her. Its a case of how much money you're willing to spend on that R35. So its not as cut and dry as you may think. I dont think there are tunner parts for this Infiniti. That is not to say that this q60 wont sell.

ive had a G37 for about 2 years now and have been refraining from getting the Q60 in hopes this Dream Car will come out. if they don't release this car ill most likely try a M Series or jaguar F type.

I have a 2015 Q60s same color paint and wheels so I’m in love. Really wish there were more companies make supers and turbos for these cars to compete with Stillen....maybe bring the price down a bit.
