Cheap incandescent turn signals front and rear, back up and license plate lights, Toyota why? Literally, you get full LED exterior lights on a $30K Camry XLE and XSE but not this nearly $50K Highlander? Makes no sense, there’s no LED interior lights either, quite triggering.

We have recently compared this to Telluride and several others. We will probably buy in the next week or two. We are almost certainly going Highlander. This thing is smooth. Also, it is a Toyota, so it should be solid and long term reliable. I had telluride fever like many people until I drove a used one because that is all they had on the lot. It was a 2020 maxed out Telluride. I forget the package name, but the salesman said you could go no higher. Maybe the prior owner ragged it out. I don’t know, but both rear sunshades were broken in different ways and it generally didn’t age well. The salesman said the guy traded it for a 2021 because he wanted a different color than the moss green which he had. Maybe the prior owner had crazy kids or something, but I walked away feeling like it did not age well. This could just be a one off, but I know Toyota won’t have that problem.

@@curiously1510 Ha you’re a tough customer if it’s dated after one model year. Hybrids hold no interest to me. Their gas V6 is actually one of the best motors ever built. We own a 2021 platinum Highlander and the weakest part of this vehicle is the interior packaging: lack of third row space, cupholders mounted on the floor in the middle which may or may not present in annoyance I haven’t had the car long enough. Not being able to get a third seat in the middle is very annoying though for whatever reason the top trim only came with captains chairs. The rear cargo space with the are seats up is improved but still lags behind the ascent for example. The rear glass no longer pops open but the rear wiper is not hidden in the top of the hatch. The drivers seat does not have the thigh extender like in the previous two models. The passenger seat is 4 way and that’s it. No power folding side mirrors. No USB ports in the third row. So yes I agree there are legitimate functional criticisms of this vehicle.

There are people out in the world who buy more what they can chew thats the big problem or not knowing what features that you know will use or not depending what vehicle they looking at. That is the *ONE THING* that is actually the *DEAL-BREAKER* for me! The engine is *rough, unrefined, gritty, harsh, noisy and drone-y.* On acceleration it sounds like it might have a small exhaust leak, or the muffler is shot! 🙄
....And yes, I'm facing the same dilemma. Reliability and Durability are EXTREMELY important to me, as I keep my vehicles for the very long term (10+ years and drive them till the "wheels fall off"). But, oh well, you've got one life to live. You don't want to get into it and hear that horrendous, unrefined POS engine. So I might just "bite the bullet" and get a Telluride. I assisted a friend in buying a new Highlander 3 months ago. We were able to wiggle $4950 off of the MSRP. However, she isn't at all satisfied with it. She is having buyer's remorse. Only NOW she concedes the Palisade would've been the better choice -- with a much more premium feel, tech and design -- instead of Toyota's inherent cheapness that she experiences with every drive. Her Highlander is already squeaking inside, just like the 2017 Sienna she traded-in. Ah, the price some pay to be blind loyalists. From the looks of it, I think this'll be her last Toyota....

I do believe the interior is an advancement most certainly over the previous model, but I do prefer the exterior design of the '17-'20 model over this more rounded/bulbous design. For $50k, that Kia Telluride SX-L, Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy, and from a performance and towing perspective, the Explorer ST/Platinum and Durango R/T seem to be better values. Plus, at this rate, you're starting to encroach on the new Acura MDX and the new star of the crossover, the Genesis GV80.(albeit not their loaded models). And then its in the details for me. Toyota gives the $30k Camry XSE full LED lighting, dual exhaust, and a few other niceties that are absent here. Very frustrating.

Good review. The new generation Highlander is an overdue upgrade for its best selling 3 row midsize crossover. And like most Toyotas it's a good, even a very good, vehicle especially in its top Platinum trim. But no vehicle is flawless and the Highlander is no exception.
Its biggest weakness compared to its 3 row rivals is a relatively cramped interior. For example, according to Car and Driver the total passenger space in the Highlander is 136.1 cubic ft. The Telluride, only 2" longer than the Highlander (196.9" vs 194.9"), provides 157.1 cf. The difference is most obvious in terms of legroom. The Telluride has a total of 115.2" in its three rows while the Highlander offers 110.7". (An important metric since both the 1st and 2nd rows can be adjusted to allocate legroom as needed. The Telluride (and the Palisade) offer considerably more adjustability.)
The difference is especially obvious in the 3rd row where the Telluride provides 31.4" of default legroom compared to the Highlander's 27.7". Why is that important? Presumably because 3rd row seating is likely to be a priority among those buying a midsize SUV. Otherwise, why not opt for one of the many 2 row midsize SUVs in the market.(e.g. Honda Passport, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford Edge, Chevy Blazer, Hyundai Santa Fe, etc.) And if a 3rd row is needed only occasionally, the KIA Sorento, half a foot less in length than the Highlander(189" vs 194.9") offers nearly 2" more 3rd row default legroom (29.6").
Finally, cargo space in the Highlander is relatively limited compared to the Telluride, especially behind the third row. With all three rows in place the Telluride offers 21 cubic ft of cargo space. The Highlander's spec is 16 cubic ft, slightly less than average for a midsize 3 row crossover. The bottom line is that when Toyota stretched the current generation Highlander's length from compared to the previous model (194.9" vs 192.5") they did nothing to improve space in the third row. Legroom is exactly the same at 27.7". And even more striking is that overall passenger space has actually shrunk slightly from 140 cubic ft to 136.1 cf. Virtually all of the additional length went to cargo space behind the third row where it improved from 13.6 cf to 16 cf.
The newest generation of the Highlander has much going for it. Especially the hybrid version where it stands nearly alone. (The KIA Sorento hybrid is just coming online and will provide a rival on that score. Likewise for the closely related 2 row Hyundai Santa Fe.) But for those looking for a roomy three row midsize SUV, the Highlander is challenged at best.

@@beautifullycrowned5372 What should it tell you considering that virtually every single automaker on the planet offers a separate warranty on the engine and drivetrain? Unless, of course, an automaker offers no warranty, whatsoever, beyond 3 years/36K miles. Not only are KIA/Hyndai/Genesis powertrain warranties far longer than other manufacturers, so are their bumper-to-bumper warranties.
On the other hand, I've owned a couple of KIA Sorentos over the last decade and I might as well have had a warranty that lasted for 15 miles and half an hour. Why? Because nothing, absolutely nothing, ever went wrong with either vehicle that required a warranty claim.
