I have watched LOTS of videos on how to make a rag quilt and I have to tell you, this is by far the BEST one I have watched! You show everything with a clear camera angle, you tell exactly what size you use for the squares and just really precise instructions. Love it! Thanks for making this easy to follow! Oh, and THANKS for not having a year long intro either like most videos :) Right to the point and you actually show the finished project! Going to check out your other videos!
This is gorgeous. It came to life after the snipping and washing. I'm going to try a smaller project first to see how I get on. Love it. Thanks for showing us. You have beautiful hands by the way x
Deby I love everything you post and the way you explain! I used the exact same method and made two of those for my kids a year ago. They love them! You are so going to enjoy your fluffy rag quilt! I even made one with quilting fabric on top of the two flannel layers. Worked great and it is a bit lighter for a warmer weather. Keep inspiring us!
You are soo funny... I don't even know how to sew. Always wanted to learn. The bit about your cat made me smile. Love to watch and listen to your DIYs Just Love your taste. Thank you.
this is something I've been thinking about making for a while. you're quilt is so beautiful I know I have to make this next! thanks for the wonderful tutorial!
Thank you for the great video on this quilt! Have always been interested in it but never really understood how to do it. And the way you explain step by step, it is now going to be one I will have to do! You always show things so well!!
Very beautiful quilt and clear helpful instructions. I've watched many rug quilt videos and yours is my favourite as it is to the point and showing all one needs to know to create a perfect quilt while pointing important details. I've seen some of your other videos and they're all great. Thank you for making a video and sharing!!
I love it! I'm new to sewing and you inspire me to do more than I think I can!!! As much as I love this, your cosmetics bag is next for me. Thank you for sharing!!!
This turned out just beautiful! 😍 I like how you explain your video. You make it easy to learn instead of complicating things. Thanks, l will try this. 😁
I absolutely love this quilt and going to make one straight away !! So so beautiful, and you explain it really well as I am a beginner.. can't wait to start
The quilt is so pretty!! I would be just like you...stroking it and wanting to cuddle in it! I will definitely try to make one of these. Now off to round up some flannel fabric!! Thank you!!
I love the colors and how you laid it out. I'm like you and do not do random very well. Thank you for the tutorial. I'm thinking of making one for each of my boys
So cute. I will soon have a little sewing room and look forward to a dedicated space to make my sewing mess. This is definitely on the list of things to try. I'm new to quilting and it's been a long time since doing any sewing so it's going to be interesting. Thanks for the video. I have a lot to learn so have subscribed and thumbs up.
I loved it .. But I wish if you could take a picture for the whole rag front and back on the bed or the floor. I loved the lilac colour. and the printed ones too. beautiful snipping edges. I loved it all. thanx for sharing.
I have never seen such a thorough video on rag quilt making like this one! You were so good at explaining to us beginning the whole process step by step and being so organized! Thank you. Question: can rag quilt only be made with flannel fabric? Can regular quilt fabric would do for this?
Hello from Canada, love your first ever rag quilt. I will do the same except, I have old bed sheets and baby comforter. I have my work cut out for me but if you have any suggestions, please feel free to let me know. I think I will do both of them as a rag quilt. These will be for my nefews. So I have to find ways of making them different.
TY for the very informative video. I love the way the colors all made a stunning design. My question is about the right kind of flannel. Does the flannel create pilling or those rough little "grainy" to the touch things, after several washings? What should I select in buying flannel? TY for a response.
Beautiful rag quilt. Love it. I am gonna to make a blue throw rag quilt. Don't know when I'm going to make it. I have a dress not even finish yet and a skirt not even not finish yet.
Absolutely fantastic tutorial! I am a beginner sewer and unfamiliar with flannel? I can remember flannelette as a child or bathroom flannel's! If you could help I would most appreciate it, thank you
I love these rag quilts but I have a suggestion for those folks with septic systems. Put your quilt in a zippered pillow case or all those threads will clog up your septic system. Happy ragging!
Hi just starting to learn how to do some simple quilting, I love your video, can you tell how much material yo u start off with before cutting your squares..many thanks.
Thanks for sharing this clear instructional video!! I have a couple questions, I am attempting to make a jean quilt and am curious if it is necessary for each square to have an in-between layer of fabric (sandwiched between the front and back). I am also curious if it is necessary to sew the cross on each square. I'm not the best sewer so even the easiest sewing steps take a lot out of me lol.
Rachel Rie The layers are what gives it the 'raggy' look, so the more layers you have, the move raggy edges you get. If you just want to use a front and back, then you can add a layer of batting inside, and cut it so that it doesn't show in the seam allowances. Yes, ideally you do want to do the cross to keep the layers together, stop any batting from moving around and to make it stronger.
Hi Deby, Your quilt is just Beautiful love it. How big is the quilt you didn't say how large it was. Will it fit a queen size bed? Thanks You so much for sharing your lovely quilt. God Bless... Bet
I'm going to be making my first rag quilt this week and I was wondering if I could use only 1 piece of fabric for the back of the quilt [6×4] instead of having to cut squares?
BEAUTIFUL. I curious though why put all that pretty fabric in the middle? Why not use cheaper batting or plain fleece, like most do here in the US?is it so the"ragging will all look the same, with same colors or is it a UK thing? As a quilter I love fabric, so I just hate to see such pretty fabric covered up...lol. Please don't get me wrong, I'm not at all trying to be critical, I really am just curious. It is an awesomely BEAUTIFUL quilt, you did an amazing job!!! Much love and prayers from Jennifer in Bakersfield Ca USA thank you for teach us!!
What kind or brand of rotary scissor are you using? It looks so easy. I have two brand new rotary scissors and I have to fight to get it to cut through one layer of flannel. You are doubling up and you cut so easily. What am I doing wrong? I have the cutting mat, the 6" ruler and the rotary scissor.
Hello Deby, I enjoyed your tutorial on the rag quilt. I would like to make to twin size rag quilts for my granddaughters. How much material will I need for both quilts. Also how many colors are needed. Thanks for your help.
+Jacque'Lyne Jones To estimate your fabric, I think you could decide how big you want the quilt and then add on 20% for your seam allowances and multiply that by how many layers you plan to have. That should give you a good estimate of how much fabric you'll need to buy in total, then you can split that between your colors.
So beautiful! Please, how much of each material did you use? I'd love to make one for our daughter and a smaller one for our new baby! Thank you for your videos!
Jennifer Szost This large sized quilt with 3 layers and 6 inch squares took a total of 10 yards of flannel. But its oh so worth it! For a smaller quilt or bigger squares you would use less. You can read all about it at so-sew-easy.com/how-to-make-a-rag-quilt/
+Jacque'Lyne Jones There are a lot of fabrics which are 100% cotton, so it really depends on the weave. You wouldn't want to use quilting cotton for example, but cotton flannel would be lovely.
Absolutely Gorgeous! You've inspired me to give it a try! I think I'll do the 10 inch squares .... this will probably take me forever to get done but when I do I'll send you a picture
Can you mix fabric types, I bought flannel but its not good quality so just going to make a rag quilt with it, but only have polycotton or cotton to use for the back
I just completed my first rag quilt made from flannel. Everything was great until I washed and dried it. The quilt came out of the dryer all lint and pilled. I attempted to remove the lint with a lint roller but it's really adhered to the quilt. Is there anything that I can do to prevent this from happening again? Also, any way to salvage this quilt?
+Angela Atwell I used flannel for 2 reasons really. 1 - I can't get quilt batting here so that was an easy choice. 2 - the batting has to be cut within the seams so it doesn't show, but the flannel is cut full size so it becomes part of the seam allowance and makes more of a thicker raggy seam. That was the more full look I was after. But I've seen it done both ways and it works well whichever you choose.
+Dakota Moone That depends on how thick your fabrics are and how sharp those scissors are. You might be able to but it could be quite hard on your wrists after a while.
I have made this quilt before-it's really a nice quick quilt especially for a baby gift. One thing that I do is that I use 2 pieces of flannel for the front and two pieces for the back. I don't see the rationale to use 3 pieces of fabric.-I don't put any batting in it, it's heavy enough without it.
+Marsha Spears It's very very hot here in the Caribbean so 4 layers would have made it pretty much too hot to use. 3 seemed a nice middle-ground where it is still nice and shaggy but not too hot and heavy. Of course adding 4 layers would be even nicer.
My layers turn out to be two-just the top and bottom with no layer in the middle. In flannel it's thick enough for me-and easily washed and dried. Thanks for your video.

Absolutely beautiful! Great video
I love it! And you explained everything so well. I’m going to make a baby one.
Great tutorial, very well explained. I would make the front and back fabrics the same so I would not have to worry about the design on the back.

Dena Bandsma Isn't it true that finding the time is the hardest part of sewing.
When I'm making something for me r someone I'm taking my time to with it. No its not hard. Gonna make ur own time to sew.

Very cute blankly . Ouch on the snipping . !!!! Good job.
I would never have expected the three layers. Interesting.
Bellissima! Bravissima 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
80 - 5” cut squares arranged 8 X 10 in rows makes a nice crib size, rag quilt.
Love your tutorials

Hi Deby,

When you sew the X , do you stop 1/2” from the corners or do you take it all the way to the corner?
I'm going to be making my first rag quilt this week and I was wondering if I could use only 1 piece of fabric for the back of the quilt [6×4] instead of having to cut squares?
That would work, although you need to attach the backing with more than just the edge sewing. My grandma used to hand tack her quilts with yarn.

awesome video, excellent demonstration - thank you very much! :)
I want to snuggle with it too! Thank you, great and funny vid. :)
Your quilt is lovely! Did you throw it in the dryer after washing?
+Pat McGuire I don't have a dryer, I just hung it over the balcony to dry in the sun.
+So Sew Easy Do you think putting in a dryer would effect the quilt at all? On a low setting, I'd guess?
Thank you so much, lovely quilt for my daughter
This is definitely very beautiful. I can do with one like that right now. Thanks for sharing these Beautiful ideas.
Beautiful! Thank you

Very Stunning. TFS

Absolutely Gorgeous! You've inspired me to give it a try! I think I'll do the 10 inch squares .... this will probably take me forever to get done but when I do I'll send you a picture
Sharon Pucci Yes, bigger would be quicker, I had quite a blister from all the snipping!
Can you mix fabric types, I bought flannel but its not good quality so just going to make a rag quilt with it, but only have polycotton or cotton to use for the back
Could you do more sewing in the squares like all around and through the middle plus the x

What if you comb it with a very fine comb held almost flat against the fabric to pull the pills off? Maybe a little lice comb?
That's exactly what I did using my dogs flea comb 😉
I have heard using vinigar in the rinse helps with lint and also helps fabrics from fading out to much
does it need to be flannel for this quilt
Would love to know where you got the beautiful purple flower fabric. The sight you have has been disabled😟
What setting did you use on the washer?
Would you recommend batting for the center layer or another flannel layer?
+Angela Atwell I used flannel for 2 reasons really. 1 - I can't get quilt batting here so that was an easy choice. 2 - the batting has to be cut within the seams so it doesn't show, but the flannel is cut full size so it becomes part of the seam allowance and makes more of a thicker raggy seam. +Dakota Moone That depends on how thick your fabrics are and how sharp those scissors are. You might be able to but it could be quite hard on your wrists after a while.
Okay, I'll try to pick up some spring loaded scissors :) thank you for the reply!

Did you use a walking foot?
Aren’t you suppose to wash flannel before cutting due to shrinkage...?
Lovely hands and nails in particular.
How do you figure how much fabric is needed?
Love it
