Tom would not let Jerry go in the original show. Whilst they get on at certain points, he's seen violently trying to throw him into boiling water to cook him up on a few occasions. Along with the actual act of trying to slice him with knives and so on. So, no. Tom wouldn't just let him go. That being said. New Tom and Jerry would be dulled down a little.
