  • Six months using the Makita coffee machine it's time to share our opinion - Is a kettle or thermos flask a better option for great coffee on a job site?
Has a fresh coffee innovation in the shape of a Taylor's Coffee Bag rendered the Makita portable coffee maker obsolete?

Although Makita may not tell customers this, the higher AH batteries are better at giving the high AMP output required for the 300watt coffee maker. It has to do with the Amperage required from each Lithium Ion cell. There are more cells in the higher AH batteries. Actually double the cells. My coffee maker works great on 4.0 and 5.0 AH batteries. Coffee is very hot and brews quicker than your machine did on the 3.0 AH battery. Too bad your review turned away some buyers. This little coffee maker works great.

I was looking at the Makita because I thought it would be nice for when the power was out or for working outdoors. I wouldn't use it on less than a 5 amp battery. But I think I'll look around some more before buying. Great humor guys.

After working in a house with no heating and only a generator for power (not even bug enough for a kettle) we tried this and it worked great! The thermos didn't last us long enough so maybe needed a bigger one but both are viable options if you have no kettle!

You're a bit off on your definition of a Watt.
    The short explanation is:
I think you're thinking of a Calorie, which is a unit of energy, equal to the amount of energy required to heat 1kg of water by 1°C. Calories can be confusing because a Calorie (capital C) is for 1kg of water, a calorie (minor c) is for 1g, so 1Cal = 1000cal = 1kcal (k stands for kilo and means 1000)
    The long explanation is:
A Watt is the SI unit of power.
Power is the rate of change or transfer of energy.
A Watt is the transfer of 1 Joule every second.
A Joule, is the SI unit of energy (or work done).
Energy can take many forms but it requires energy to apply (or overcome) a force over a distance. Like lifting a mass up, against the force of gravity.
Effectively, if you carry a sack of potatoes to the top of some stairs, you will have worked against gravity and that requires energy, measured in Joules. Or if you warm up some water that will require energy.
But power, is about how quickly you transfer that energy. If you want to run up the stair with the potatoes you will require more power, measured in Watts, but the same energy. Or if you want to warm up your water quicker, you will need more power.
(There's also energy loss to consider but that's not important here)
You can work out the energy required to heat 1kg of water by 1°C by search for its specific heat capacity (it's different for different materials)
    For water it's about 4.2J/g/°C or 4,200J/kg/°C.
So to raise 1kg of water by 1°C requires 4,200J of energy.
A Watt is about how quickly you transfer the energy so if you wanted to heat 1kg of water by 1°C every second, you'd require a power of 4,200W.
And it all works with ratios so if you had half the mass of water (0.5kg) but the same power, it would increase in temperature by 2°C every second, and so on.
A Watt-hour, is a unit of energy similar to a Joule. But a Watt-hour (Wh) is the energy transferred by a power of 1Watt applied for an hour.
Because an hour is 3600 seconds, a Wh is 3600 Joules.
The big brother of the Wh is the kilo-watt-hour kWh. Which is 1kW (1000W) applied for 1 hour.
A battery with a 1000Wh capacity contains the equivalent energy to supplying a power of 1000Watts for 1hour. Which again with the ratios is the same as 2000W for 0.5hrs and so on.
Batteries get more confusing because they're usually rated with an Amp-Hour (or milli-amp-hour, which is 1000 times smaller) capacity, rather than Wh. To convert between Ah and Wh, one needs to know the nominal voltage of the battery. Wh is the product of the Ah and the voltage. Two batteries both with 10Ah capacities will store a different amounts of energy if they are different voltages - for example the Makita 18V Vs 40V.
It gets more confusing when you consider energy loss, but to raise 250g (equivalent to 250ml) of water by 80°C (20° to 100°) will require 84,000J of energy (4.2*250*80). Which is 23.3Wh (84,000/3600).
So 54Wh is about enough for 2 cups if there were no energy lost (there always is).
With a power of 300W, it will take 280 seconds (4m40s) to transfer the required 84,000J.
For comparison, a 3kW kettle - fairly common in the UK, would do it in 28seconds.

We have the original model and it was not purchased for a job site but we use it when we are RV'ing to make our coffee before we hit the road at 5 am when we are wally world camping. Yes we could boil water on the stove and make it that way, but this is perfect as the coffee is ready by the time the trailer is ready to go. And 1 5amp battery does do 2 coffee's. I have not used a 3 amp battery on any of my numerous Makita tools for years. 5 or 6 amp only now.

In Germany 77.89 Euros, VAT already included. Batteries are not included and the charger also not included. That are ~95 USD. Standard charger is in the range of 45 Euros (55 USD), Makita batteries are round about 70 Euros (5 Ah, 86 USD). Too much for a gimmick. The only Makita not-tool that I have is their radio, nice to have some music on site. Otherwise I rather use the batteries for my Makita impact or the hammer drill instead of wasting them for making a cup of coffee.

79 degrees is exactly the temperature it should be if you know anything about coffee.
If you pour boiling water on to it directly it burns the coffee and the difference in taste is very noticeable. So if you use a kettle and you drink black coffee …… you’re drinking burnt coffee. If you like it with milk ….. mix the milk and coffee together and then pour. Or just buy a makita coffee machine for £40 ……

  • @arghjayem

It’s quite worrying that they guy on the left doesn’t seem to understand the concept of a rechargeable battery. Yes you use mains power to charge it up, but once it is you do not need to be anywhere near mains power to use something that runs off that battery? I think the cup of coffee has a higher IQ than that guy.

That’s a joke. Get yourself a small butane backpacking stove and a small pot and a pour over type coffee maker. It’s cheaper, easier, smaller, lighter, most likely faster, can make 2 cups worth at a time, and last but not least it will taste GREAT.
