Liverpool has a metro which can, and is, being extended. No need for trams - money needs to be spent on the metro. Over 40 years ago one third of the metro, Merseyrail, was binned by Thatcher. Miles of trackbed and tunnels are still awaiting trains.

Liverpool should finally get it's act together and build a citywide tram system. They have miles of beautiful central reservations. If Manchester , Leeds , Nottingham, Birmingham and Glasgow, to name most have done it so can they. The reason they have a history of a lazy council that never pushes this hard enough with the government.

Merseytravel can’t even get the new Class 777 (on display at a sidings near you) operational so won’t hold my breath.

Liverpool doesn't need to ape other cities seeing as it already has superior rail infrastructure that just needs investment to be extended. The Bootle Line takes care of the football crowd and parts of North Liverpool. The Outer City Loop and North Mersey Line takes care of the east of the city onward St. Helens as well as the King's Dock area (to service the arena and exhibition centre).
The battery pack on the latest 777s makes extensions to Preston, Wrexham, Helsby, Wigan Wallgate and a handful other places feasible. Tell me which other rail service outside London can boast of such coverage as part of its commuter rail offerings.
What's more? The infrastructure is already there (miles of disused underground tunnels, overground railway, and closed stations), all that's needed is political will, regional and central.

Many thanks for this summary of the planned Merseytram system. It's a shame it didn't go ahead. I'm planning to make a video on this subject so the information you've provided is very useful. I've subscribed to your channel.

It always amazes me how developed the project was in terms of design and recruiting people, but so lacking basics such as a finalised route and most importantly, funding.

I can see a tram based systerm that would work for events such as the football, The trams can replace buses to Anfield and the new Everton stadium.

Trams cannot shift enough people for football games.

Better still, the Bootle Line should be electrified and made available for commuter service seeing as this line passes through Anfield and Walton. The infrastructure is already there, just needs an upgrade.
Liverpool doesn't need its streets mutilated with tram tracks when it already has superior infrastructure (underground and overground) that just needs extensions.

A new stop on the northern line at Boundary Street will allow direct access to Bramley-Moore Stadium.

Feel like there is good room in this city for trams or monorail, it sucks that there isn't a push for these.

The council would rather build cycle paths not many use.
