I'm a truck driver coming up on 10 years. One of the things I'm aware of is that there are things I had to be taught because they never would have occurred to me. But I've been doing them for so long now I don't even remember what those things were.
Apprentices are in that boat. The things I'm being taught as I learn to weld seems immediately self evident once I've been shown but it never occurred to me before I was shown. I think everyone should at least start a second trade sometime in their career just to remind themselves what it's like to be completely under prepared for 99% of situations.
Also my understanding of the DPF is that it's self cleaning but only to like, 99.5% effectiveness. There's always a little bit of carbon left behind and slowly that teeny bit builds up until you get to the point where the catalyst of the DPF can't properly burn the built up particulate anymore, and then you get degenerating effectiveness of your burns until it just won't Regen at all. Could be wrong, it's been like 6 years since I had a DPF give me problems outside of sebsors
I had to go and drop that last sentence with a truck at 700,000km. Wish me luck the next 2 months, it's a super reliable truck but every fall I have some kinda emissions issue....
It would have been fun to show all the soot and junk the shop cleaned out of the filter. Not a mechanic, but I'll send in a picture of my rig when its complete. It's has long journey, but I am getting ready to locate the crane soon. Great comedic relief for my workday! 'Don't let the machines win!' 👍😁

so the way those work is they regulate the amount of soot coming from the exhaust but when it gets clogged it exhausts out the stuff that it kept in turn doing absolutely fuck all for the environment
