Correction: Sing the Sorrow was their major label debut as Dexter let them out of their deal with Nitro early sighting they had out grown Nitros resources. STS was released on DreamWorks records a subsidiary of Geffen/Universal.

So, Sing the Sorrow was the diagnosis then?
I was 19 when it came out.
To me, it was previous obvious to see where AFI was trying to go with this album, in a commercial sense. The sound itself was very commercial and had lost some of their grit, even though it was heavy & dark. But, the songs were undeniably good and so I grew to really like it at the time. It's true that it elegantly bridged that gap between horror punk & screamo / mall emo (The Used, Taking Back Sunday, Thursday, even Thrice) while still sounding like they were maturing.
I remember hearing that Davey had some vocal cord issues and his voice had to adapt to that. Don't know if that's even true now.

That makes more sense because I remember it being closer to 2001 when I watched their first video on MTV. I was somewhat in disbelief that these emo vampires were the same band I used to listen to but sure enough their name popped up again at the end. The sound by that point was already enough for me to check out.

I saw AFI on there very proud of you tour. I was 17 or 16 and I was able to work the door at the show. They were not that big of a band. Really nice dudes though. I walked with the singer when they first arrive down to this gas station right around the corner from the club and we found this inflatable guitar. Like a kid's toy. And we kept writing "riffs" on it. It makes no sense but we were cracking up. and right they went on he ran up to me and grabed the inflatable guitar out of my hands and played most of the set with it 😂

Great video, dude! AFI are one of my all-time favorite bands, and I got into them in 2000 after a classmate and his friends performed The Days of the Phoenix at our high school talent show. I saw them at Warped Tour in Pontiac, Michigan in 2001, and met Hunter, as well as saw Davey roaming in the crowd before their set.
I couldn't disagree more with you about Decemberunderground, though. This album SLAYS, in my opinion! I bought it release day, and fell in love with it. Banger after banger characterizes this album for me. My least favorites are The Interview and Kiss And Control, but from Prelude 12/21 to Endlessly, She Said are all fantastic songs! Kill Caustic, Miss Murder, Summer Shudder, Love Like Winter, Affliction, The Missing Frame, The Killing Lights, 37mm, and Endlessly, She Said are certified classics!
Crash Love was that point for me back in 2009, however, and to date, is the only AFI album I ever got rid of when I gave it to my brother in law.
I would stop listening to AFI's new stuff until 2020, when I decided to shuffle their stuff on the Alexa in the hotel lobby where I work. I happened upon 17 Crimes, Greater Than '84, Hidden Knives, Still A Stranger, and Wild, and I loved them! I went on to re-purchase Crash Love, then bought Burials, Blood Album, and The Missing Man EP, and when it came out in 2021, my wife bought me Bodies for Christmas. I haven't listened to Bodies much, but I played the others repeatedly, and absolutely loved them all. AFI are very much alive, but their life paths took them in this direction, and I just accept it. They are still making the music they want to make, and this is what they sound like now :D

They played their largest arena show to date and played 13 songs. That show was a complete money grab. From the merch, to turn production to the show. Guess Bodies sold that poorly that they had to do what they said they never would.

    • @mavtastic

I’m confused because this was an anniversary show of STS. So yes, they played the STS songs. No one was surprised by this and happily paid for tickets to see those songs played. Also, who doesn’t sell merch? You don’t HAVE to buy it. Don’t be ridiculous.

    • @jimmygee3219

@@mavtastic they played 13 songs. At an arena headlining show. I have seen tons of concerts where bands played albums in full. And they always filled out with a second shorter set either before or after so they’re playing a full headliner set. Hell, I’ve seen bands play 2 records in a night and still played a second extra set. And the merch was 1.) wrong which is laughable and 2.) they announced it, like the “exclusive vinyl” that actually isn’t exclusive and was available on their site 2 days later. Like half of the rest of the merch.
At the end of the day it was a cash grab where the band did as minimally as they possibly had to to rake in a ton of money. I thankfully decided not to go or I would have been pissed. Maintaining a band must be a pain. It seems a huge part of their fanbase demands they just keep pumping out the same crap over and over. God forbid if they explore and experiment with new things. Greatest bands of all time!! Love all their albums, old and new. 🔥
I believe Sing the Sorrow was put out by both Dreamworks and Nitro, with Dreamworks doing the major distribution and Nitro only being attached to it because they were contractually owed another album by AFI. Nitro then put out an AFI compilation album around that same time without their consent from what I heard in an interview with Hunter, which left that relationship on not-so-great terms.

3:24 No -- this album was a clear departure in terms of tempo experimentation (Third Season, Coin Return) and flat out weight of the recording. This is where they turned the corner from pure speed hardcore to a meatier sound with Andy Ernst who also engineered Black Sails. You can hear it in the records and you could feel the change in the live show energy which was completely bonkers at that point, closing every show with Coin Return. After this, the speed tapered off to maybe a track or two per record.

AFI died with crash love for me. After I stopped caring about being "punk rock", December Underground became one of my favorite records. You're right lyrically it's kinda cringe but melodically it is brilliant. It's just an absolute joy to listen to and sing along with, there's so many uplifting fun melodies lol. I think the record is just hated by people that want to keep an image of being punk rock or something... I used to hate the record for that very reason. I just don't care anymore. I love DU.
Crash love though is where their musical writing talent just fell off a cliff, and although they've recovered somewhat with future albums, it's just significantly worse than anything DU and earlier and it's never been good enough for me to want to listen to it more than once. They do seem to be in a bit in a bit of a slump, but, I look forward to to hearing what comes next. My favorite era is Black Sails- Sing the Sorrow. Do I want to hear more of that? NO! Black Sails/ Art of Drowning dropped at a point where skate punk was starting to sound pretty worn out, and it was such a fresh sound back then. Darker and heavyer but with almost no metal influence at all, I still havnt heard anything that I'd compare to what they were doing during that period. A couple albums later I couldnt even bring myself to wear an AFI shirt in public. At this point I just feel really bad for anyone who got Nephilim tatoo.

Art of Drowning was the last of AFI as most of us know as AFI. Even though Sing the Sorrow was the last AFI album I listened to. After that, I just couldn’t do it anymore.
Black Sails in the Sunset is by far my favorite AFI album
AFI shows were so good too. Davey is like 5’ and could do spin kicks like 8’ high and the energy!!! Loved when they opened with Through our Bleeding and the whole crowd would start that chant.

A high school friend got me into AFI around 2000. My first taste was The Art of Drowning, which was unlike anything I had heard before. Needless to say, I was an immediate fan, and this remains my favorite album. The sound, the themes- I love it all. After exploring all their previous material, I decided the Jade years were my favorite iteration, and as a budding guitarist, the guy provided a ton of inspiration. I’d say STS was their musical pinnacle, but there were definitely some good songs off the next couple albums. When Burials came out I was lost. The musical characteristics I had come to love were completely absent. There wasn’t a single song that inspired me to learn the guitar parts. The blood album was the same. Eventually I came to like some of the music off these two albums, but Bodies was the final nail in the coffin for me. I’ve sampled a bit of this album and I just can’t do it. They had a hell of a run, though.

This review sounds like a guy trapped in a genre he loves who thinks anyone developing past or around what he loves sucks. It becomes clear as he rants that his musical education has a stellar lack of basic technical knowledge. His lack of knowledge on their pre band history and lack of knowledge on their inspirations and affections makes this review not only wildly inaccurate towards the end, it just makes him sound like and entitled child who is just pissed they did stay hard core punk.
Look man, artists change and grow. Their whole career is about creating art they are proud of, not worrying about some whiny skater kid being pissed they're not the Godsmack of punk, recreating the same album 19 times.

I love that bands all over the spectrum of scene music show in some ways how AFI influenced them. It is kind of sad to me that they’ve put so much effort to distance themselves from “the scene”. I think they were ahead of the curve in that regard. If they’d dropped just one more album that mixed the Sing the Sorrow/Decemberunderground vibes after Decemberunderground, I think they could have been in the position to drop a pop/rock record and reach the heights Fall Out Boy and PATD have. Crash Love’s timing and composition were a major letdown to me as a fan. Waiting 3 years after DU to hear Crash Love killed their momentum.

I actually like a decent bit of Decemberunderground but basically have ignored everything after it. I started listening to them in the late 90s, probably around 97-98. A compilation of my favorite songs of theirs has been all I've listened to in my car for about a month actually.
What really bums me out is when Davey had to change his singing on Sing the Sorrow. As far as I understand it was necessary otherwise he'd f up his vocal chords so I don't blame him obviously, it's just a bummer.
But yeah 1999-2000 era AFI is amazing. I mean I listen to Porphyria or Fall Children or Greetings and Goodbyes and like them more now than I did when I was younger. I'll listen to Porphyria and am like "gd that's a song" lol.

But there's no question that their early Hardcore Punk/Horror Punk stuff is much more enjoyable imo. So many good songs from those days compared to now where I honestly only like a smaller handful. I miss when Davey would do his yells and shouts but I understand that he probably isn't able to do that much anymore in his older age so I can see why he forgoes it.

After playing December Underground for an entire summer and getting into their punk stuff into highschool I went. Granted I'm sure I've heard songs from Sing the Sorrow on the radio since my aunt always had the rock stations on when she drove me to school and whatnot. The next album after December Underground though is where they lost my attention. I enjoyed Davey and Jade's side project though. Since then I've been more and more disconnected from the band. They're still freaking amazing and have immense talent and have really refined their craft but it's just not my style. Crash Love is where they lost me but to this day I will still say they're my favorite band because of their discography having so many styles and they're versatile plus their sound is unique.

Im just gonna say a few things. The first full length "ATASF" was mostly a compilation of their very early ep songs and songs they had played for years prior to it being released. Also Jade was in multiple bands in the same scene and did backing/gang vocals on prior albums before eventually joining the band. The were let go from Nitro by Dexter before STS as Dexter felt they had outgrown Nitro and should take the opportunity to partner with a major label. STS was so great and huge compared to earlier albums mainly due to Butch Vig's hand in producing. He is one of the greatest producers based on what he did with The Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana as well as MANY other bands. Now you say "AFI died with DU." However consider this, Many songs were left over from STS or at least started in the writing process of it. So Maybe they couldnt fit or as some didnt fit the "theme" whatever the case they basically had the material there for them to use. It is not my favorite by any means but it was ok. However Crash Love, was complete trash. I couldnt listen to it, then or now. But I wouldnt say they were dead or even dead to me. Every band that lasts as long as them (sometimes not even) put out a "bad" album or two. Also in between STS and DU, Davey did a ton of other things. Same with the time between most of their albums since. They seem to stay active in other projects. I wouldnt say they are dead, though. And while the Cure influence is more prevalent they also incorporate other influences. Also if you enjoy the Sails and Art of Drowning era Check out Davey on the Son of Sam debut album Songs From The Earth.

I think I agree with most of your tastes but not necessarily your criticisms The last four albums are not my favorite flavor of AFI but for the genres they exist in, they are not bad albums. Coming off of DU and Blaq Audio they wanted to step away from the elements that made them unique and intentionally wrote a straightforward rock album on Crash Love. They’ve even spoken about it saying by that it wasn’t an innovative album for the industry but they had nothing like it in their discography so it was groundbreaking for them. It’s probably my least favorite album because nothing about it really stands out but it’s still a perfectly fine rock album.
The last three albums have all been goth rock, which is inherently a kindof dull and droning genre, and still they are all decent for what it is. I actually would say Burials was a pretty damn good goth rock album.
I think my biggest criticism is just that they have been sitting in the same goth rock space for three albums and I would expect for them to have moved on my now.
Ultimately, I seriously doubt anything in the future of their career is going to touch STS because it was such a robust emotional rebirth for the band. Like, you can tell Davey was GOING THROUGH IT at the time, and it ended up being such an influential album across the industry.
I’ll probably always regard “Days of the Phoenix” as the single best snapshot of AFI though. It’s right on the tipping point of everything the band was before and everything the band became after. You can really feel their whole discography in that one song.
