Just wonderful! Congratulations! This reminds me of our favorite place we stayed at in Europe: Fuchs'sche Mühle near Rothenburg ob der Tauber. It is also an old mill powered by water that has been converted into a hotel/pension. We opened our window at night and could hear the water running underneath us. We all agreed (6 of us) that it was the best sleep we got the whole trip… and perhaps ever?

Finally we get to see the inside of the watermill, its awesome! If it were mine I would fix the roof and beam first as you will be opening the interior up to the weather, then once roof tight you can work away room by room. Such a great property with so much character.

Those small square tiles are awesome. Here in Brazil they're called "Ladrilhos hidráulicos", something like hydraulic tiles. Hydraulic because they're made of cemente (dry pressed) and cured submersed in water. Expensive and beautiful.

See if you can put in steel supports then split the trees and wrap the steel with them. Best of both worlds. The windows will be a god send, congratulations 🎉
I found having a temporary outdoor shower and toilet was a quick improvement. Fire heated a metal drum on one level, pipe went out the bottom of drum to valve and shower head on lower level, with a flimsy shack around it with no roof. Just heated water to the temperature I wanted. Digger dug a narrow 3 metre deep hole that I built a quick shack over with roof for toilet. Just put a bucket of dirt and a handful of lime in it after every use.
This IS a beautiful place. You both just seem to be the right couple to finish the dream of another while making this the dream of yours.❤ I hope your folks, Drew, are able to come spend a few weeks to help you during construction. It was so heartwarming as you both helped Drew's folks begin the process of putting their home back together after the hurricane. This is YOUR HOME, not on wheels. Great Video. Hello Drew and Brittany. If you haven’t heard from anyone else yet about the bags of hemp, we think it, along with the mesh screen material, was to be used for plastering walls. We watch another TH-cam channel of a British couple who also live in Portugal and they also bought a old building and are in the process of renovating it. They have been plastering the walls with a mixture of lime, hemp and water. They use this mixture instead of plaster because lime absorbs the dampness instead of plaster which prevents water from infiltrating, but then causes mold. The channel is, “Make. Do. Grow” and they are based in central Portugal.
Wonderful possibilities! Although the previous owner has made a start and it is tempting to try and complete their dream, I think you should engage an architect and create your own dream.

I fell in love with Italy, but unless you purchase something already remodelled, it's almost impossible to tackle the myriad of rules, local elders, and bureaucracy to fix up a property there. Italy has no Golden Visa or passport, so it can be very pricey. Keep following your dreams, and good luck!❤

Great super creative life long project. CONGRATULATIONS! With this place, you will never get old. Too much to play with! Regarding the tree columns, and beam. Suggest that you learn about the Yosemite Ahwahnee Hotel. That place appears to be made of logs. However, it is made with steel beams. And then logs were cut to surround/enclose/hide the steel structure. Perhaps you would like to do similar. Although replacement of the log ceiling beam with proper steel, maybe the columns can be eliminated. You may need a vapor barrier on the interior walls, then plaster coating with fiber fabric, to reduce moisture intrusion.
This deserves a drumroll. We've been waiting forever to see the inside. And, all that tile! Perhaps on the steps leading up to bedrooms? Anyways, so nice of the previous owner to leave all those supplies for you to complete the dream, And, those chairs - what craftsmanship! I like the Roman chair. Look forward to your renovation,
Even if the trees wound help structurally I think that you should still keep them after the new beams because there so pretty and add a really natural connection with your surrounding nature!
Rockwool is melted volcanic rock that’s heated and spun into what resembles wool. Rats won’t eat it cuz it’s rock. It repels water and had a super high R value. We used it in our van and it’s amazing. It’s inorganic material that won’t mold. Don’t get the interior wall kind because it doesn’t have an R value as it’s only made to deaden sound. I have no idea if you can get it in Portugal tho.

Hello there, first time watching your videos. Had exactly the same thing at my old house in France- owners had a new roof and dumped all the old tiles at the top of the garden. Luckly, they contributed to the hardcore i needed to fill and level the area to make a top drive. Good luck with all your endevours- it took over 3 hours to sign the paperwork, met the Notaire, the owners, signed, had wine and a small social - it's very different to here in the UK.

Those broken tiles could make a great painted mosaic path! Or used in some kind of project mosaic style.

Hello, search for "capoto" it's the new thing that we use now for insulating walls, a protective coat outside walls. All the new buildings have it.
