    Reminds me of the time we were in line at the scales. We were refurbing a mobile home park (120 trailer be homes) . Spent a lot of time at the scrapyard. LoL. One more guy in front of us, and we get get swarmed by cops! Seems a drunk guy balanced a highway overhead sign pole (3 lanes long) on a grocery kart and pushed it to to scale. He told the cops he found it on the side of the road. Love your videos, some things you just can't make up. As always, all the best to everyone. Chef Scott 👨‍🍳

    6 volt batteries have 3 caps on top.
    12 volt batteries have 6 caps on the top.
    8 volt batteries have 4 caps on the top.
    8 volt batteries were commonly used to replace 6 volt in automotive applications. You could use the 8 volt batts to get faster cranking speeds and brighter lights without having to replace the generator and starter. If you put a 12 volt battery in you had to replace the generator and starter to keep from burning them up. The 8 volt battery would run for years on a 6 volt system.

    Thanks for another great video.
    It was interesting and enjoyable.
    I found this most interesting. I worked with these mobile towers in a lot of overseas locations while in the Air Force.
    To bad we could not get the tower up.
    Lots of history there and memories for me.
    You both worked real hard getting this one to run. Real interesting work by both of you.
    Quite the old military type set up but you and Wiley got it to run. Ya!!!!!!!
    I
    Thanks for your great work.
    Interesting unit.
    You all take care and be safe.
    Looking forward to the next video.
    Thanks for everything Hank and Wiley.

    I was in Army Tactical Satellite Communications (MOS 26Q) in the early 80's. We had nothing like this. I was in UHF. We went to the field with 3 trucks, 2 shelter trucks and one for gear. Our satellite dish was 8-10 feet in diameter and was on a tripod where we could move it on X and Y axes. The entire antenna when disassembled fit in the aisle of one of the shelters. I'm guessing that this was more of a strategic or semi-permanent set up. I agree that it was probably Gulf war era. Not to mention that the satellite phones were probably in use by then.

    I do radio and tower work with a person who owns one of these portable towers. They are quite amazing. Only need one generator, the second is a standy, and if both fail, there is a hand hydraulic pump to upright the tower, with cranks to crank up the sections. I wonder if he wants another...

    As an Ex-communicator maybe I can throw some light on it. Looks like it's part of a tropospheric scatter or radio relay (microwave) system. Also most Army equip runs 24v systems. Somewhere there should plate (will probably be black with silver characters) that will have an NSN (NATO Stock Number) on it, punch that into google and it should tell you exactly what the equip is.
    Additionally Hank, breaking that knob off looked like non fare wear to me so I think you need to raise a Lose and Damage report!🤣🤣

    • @gravelydon7072
      @gravelydon7072 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      NSN = National Stock Number. Example NSN 1005010083251 will lead you to a Rifle, Cal .30, M1 otherwise known as a Garand Rifle. Or it can lead you to Rifle, Cal .30, Inert, M1903. Basically any .30Cal rifle even ones that can be fired were under that number at some point. My gun bag that came from the military has that number and the serial number of the rifle that belongs in it. It was a rifle used by a burial detail at a National Cemetery and is a functioning Garand. Although it is too special to be used except for that service. The base it was assigned to at one point was the home of the 509th Bomb Wing. If that number sound familiar, 509th was the only ones to ever drop a nuke in a war. Grandson of Gen. Paul Tibbets also was in charge of that base at the time it was there. And yes, I had met Gen. Tibbets and the rest of the surviving crew of the Enola Gay.
      Plate may also be silver with a black set of numbers and a scan strip.
      As for the paperwork, as it is the military, it should be in triplicate and all with wet signatures. 😉 Or with what I dealt with, it was 7 duplicating copies that had to have wet signatures.

    A light tap on the enclosure will coax a wasp or two out without upsetting the whole gang off before opening it, if they are there. We did this on our enclosures doing phone line work. I forgot to do this once while tied off 20 feet up a pole. Never forgot again.

    I was stationed at Ft Bragg and assigned to a team to deploy one of these beast back in the middle 80's. We put 3 4ft microwave dishes on the top and connected to a AN/TRC-138 to provide LOS communications. The thing was so fragile, if you tried to erect it without knowing what your doing it could be turned into a pile of twisted aluminum pretty quick. The 10kw generators were the best part of these units.

    Like you, I called those insects "Dirt Dobbers" most of my life. Back in the 60's I was in the boy scouts. We went to a Jamboree. There were 100's of scouts there, from all over. I met Hank, a scout from up North. We saw that insect, Hank called it a Mud Mason. I laughed at Hank's silly name and Hank laughed at my silly name. We both insisted our favored name was the correct one. When we got back, we looked up the name. The correct name is "Mud Dobber" So we were both half right and half wrong. Ah, good times! In the 80's I was a very active amateur (ham) radio operator. A fellow ham operator had a military crank up tower, much like the one in this video. He was in the process of moving away. The realtor told him, that he had to get rid of the crank up tower in order to sell his house. When I heard he was giving it away to anyone who would remove it, I rushed over there. Much to my disappointment, some one had claimed it just before I arrived. Ah, not so good times! 💛 73

    Those generators have to be run at 60 cycles you also dont release the starter switch it has a starter lock out but the starter switch also runs the safety circut override and flashes the field on the generator. once you see frequency on the hz meter you can let go of the starter switch

  • @johnhicks735
    @johnhicks735 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'd check that emergency shut off switch for sure. Cause like hank was saying if it's stuck on the off position it will start up & stay running. It sounds like the injector pump isn't working right like it should. Like it needs to be rebuilt.,or replaced on that engine to me.

    E-Stop button must be in the OUT position to run. Those two vertical cylinder things are fuel pumps. (There should be a couple more nearby. The thing at the top of the right hand fuel pump is a "Skinner" valve, not a pump. Probably needs to have 24 volts to open.
