I love his voice variation in this song. He goes from "Bad as meeEEEEE" with that high pitched nervous crack, to the "They tol' me you were no good," deep, mafia type. He's not traditional, but he's good!
Sometimes, listenting to Tom Waits is like taking a bite out of an impossibly sweet piece of fruit, only to discover that it is because it is rotten... and then wanting another bite. When I listen to the radio, or even my music collection, I start to feel like I've been listening to the same 10 songs for months. Except for Tom Waits. It's like getting a blood transusfusion. His music is wild, elemental. It's never been domesticated. It's the essence of music - without artificial flavoring.

Waits' music as of late seems closer to performance art than what one might think of as music. I suspect, that any negative commentators I see here have come to expect Tom Waits to deliver a certain package of goods to them (Waits will never DO that sweetlings)… Mr. Waits delivers what his Brain-pan sizzles up from heart's experience, which is poetry with musical notes attached. More often than not, delivered by Tom using the voice of the Character (or the character's thought process which is even creepier) singing the song.
