The Bogeyman checks under his bed for Tom Waits.
AHAHAHAHA!!! 😂
I'm quoting you in this on facebook. This is awesome
Thinks so much for that thought.
hahaha!
And we wouldn't want it any other way!
My best friend asked me what Tom's music is like, and I told her, "Cookie Monster singing Nightmare Before Christmas"
@Dangerz Own that is true. Good ol Tom Troubadour
I usually say 'Spooky Bob Dylan'
Un Kurwa dans America That sums it up well.
th-cam.com/video/U5X4N2exOsU/w-d-xo.html
me and my friends agree Tom Waits makes sad/mad clown music
Session musicians at recording: “tom, what sound are we going for here”
Tom: “bourbon street nightmare polka”
Hahaha.
ooohhh
ooh
i like that
bourbon street nightmare polka
will use this to sell all my friends on listening to tom waits
😂😂
that's how I like my coffee now
Omg nailed it.
It's like watching Ron Pearlman get hammered, figured he should start a singing career, and begins invading your dreams to bring you Elm Street level nightmares.
Like ron pearlman😂😂😂great !!!
More like Ray Winstone
I read that as Sesame Street level nightmares. It made sense to me cause there were bubbles, balloons and animals on screen when I read it.
AAMEN \,,/
You know a man has power when he is allied with a mob of emus.
Watchout, Australia
Somehow, this is one of the most profoundly true statements ever made.
Tom Waits is in his own category of music. There is no one like him
A wonderful rarity
Tom would share that category with Primus, and they'd all be happy and probably take it as a huge compliment :)
Charles Bukowski set to music
The genre is psychadelic polka, and Waits shares it with Primus/Les Claypool.
Bert Brecht and Kurt Weill didn't have Tom Waits to inspire them! Waits is impressive enough as a synthesizing artistic force to have been plenty influenced by the giants on whose shoulders he precariously perches...See Woody Guthrie's definition of the "folk process..."

I read this comment just as he sang it. Perfect timing...

“There ain't no devil, only God when he's drunk''
Love that album
Somebody been buying white china with their underwear on the wire like a liar!! :)
How silly
@John Roberts WHAT?!
@John Roberts oh christ, here we go again, there's always one--in this case, two that disrupt the comment section, and they are apparently trying to say something that takes some strange training of some sort on another planet.
Jesus. This feels like the love child of a tragic sea shanty and the bleakest black & white cartoon ever found. And I can't stop listening to this.
Dive deeper man. The hole is deep.
Peaky Blinders the only one who can kill tom waits is tom waits 🕺🕺🕺👍
Don't use Jesus'name in vain.
@@eddieboggs8306lmao
@@eddieboggs8306don't act like a child. Also, what they did isn't what taking a deity's name in vain means. What'd be taking his name in vain is if they claimed Jesus thinks you should never listen to this music, or something equally as stupid, and was essentially speaking for a God. If anything, you're far closer to being in hot water than the person you're scolding.
"I'd sell your heart to the junkman baby for a buck." What a great opening line!
Evoking this classic th-cam.com/video/UAUmY4FfApA/w-d-xo.html
@deanjustdean7818 truisms for when your needing a reality check when you are in a relationship with a narcasist or psychopath!
It's not just the voice. It's the music he creates, It's the act. Having seen him live several times, it's also the performances he gives, it's the eccentricities he has. He's the last true Vaudevillian actor.
Well said.
That's it isn't it. The carnivalesque, the circus, Americana.
I first heard of this song during the credits of the Enron documentary. Couldn't have found a song more fitting.
Me Same .
Omg. I forgot about that. Brilliant. Lol
Me too!
Was it Enron or the 2008 economic collapse Inside Job? Anyhow, this song kicks and sticks
Same here. An indescribable song to end an unforgettable documentary!
"Well Tom, I think we're about ready to start shooting the music video. Anything else you think you might want to--"
"Emus."
"I'm... Sorry?"
"You heard me."
Any Australian will tell you their the scariest thing in this video
if only Tom Waits had lived during the early 1700s, he would have been an awesome pirate!
If you ever saw the episode of Fishing With John that he appeared on, you'd know how wrong you are.
seems he's not dead yet. but we do need high quality pirates right now. perhaps you might step up? (may I offer services as your shoulder parrot?)
pfdsmyth I accept! imma go steal a ship right now!
So would Les Claypool, check out coattails of a dead man.
But he's such a better musician!
All of Tom's music has the very interesting effect of sounding like it is from the perspective of someone with a broken, distorted mind. The overall sound, his voice, even the music videos makes it feel like a sample of madness.
one must have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star.
Yes I agree. I start feeling slightly mad when I listen to him.
I can relate
this tom waits fellow. i like him. he's very much a scenery sort of guy. he sets the scenery. he describes the scenery. he lurks in the scenery. he beats up the scenery to see what kind of noises it makes.
Doesn't like to chew it tho
*viciously Strangles emu*
I imagine Tom explaining this video: "Well, you see I have these emus in my back yard. I tried letting the cats hunt them but they just didn't have the juice, so since I couldn't get rid of 'em I built 'em a ramshackle chicken shed, and you see, one of the emus had a birthday and then the cameras showed up. I needed the stilts to show that I was the head emu because, you see, they're submissive to taller creatures. So I shot my video with all the balloons because I figured it was a happy song, right?"
swistedfilms Yeah, that seems about right. :3
swistedfilms Did you interview him or something because that sounds pretty legit?
No, just an extrapolation of what I figure he might say.
This, and something about American car horns honking in the key of F flat.
check ur blood line. u might just be a Wait
You're very kind to suggest so.
I love how somehow everything about this video makes perfect sense. I love Mr Waits.
Yes. Its sensationell. I know Tom Waits since exactly 2010 thank of a good Girlfriend. Today i try even to understand this great Artist. 🍀
Just looks like he visited an emu farm took some balloons and bubbles probably cost fifty bucks they let him film for half an hour he's cheap that makes sense the video for bad as me is just him in an alley hands painted blue with a boom box and some fruit another fifty bucks likely.
One of my favorite pieces.
Who are the ones we kept in charge:
-Killers
-Thieves
-And Lawyers
True art and in times like these - needed.
Mr Waits is a genius and yes Im still listening in 2024 !!!
"There's always free cheddar in the mouse trap baby, it's a deal.. it's a deal."
Enron: The Smartest Guys In The Room was such a good movie. This song topped it off beautifully.
This is why I’m here
I just watched it again out of the blue for the 2nd time.
Me as well. I HAD to find out who did this song. I had no idea...
The upbeat darkness of it all
Oh hey I didn't know Tom Waits did an episode of MTV Cribs

Hello MTV welcome to my craaaab
I accidentally posted there's actually same comment... Great minds I guess
There's not enough strange goo for it to be his house
It actually IS his house. Watch the interview "We're All Mad Here"
Listening to Tom Waits albums in chronological order is a trip and a half because once upon a time he sounded like an ordinary mortal and now. Well.
A modern day Billy Holiday without the heroin.
Its amazing how Tom Waits manages to reach down to humanity's darker sides and bring it up onto the table. Does it without explanation while placing it before us through music and showmanship on a very visceral level. Truly impressive.
Yeah he's got the Bukowski slum poetry and the surreal David Lynch thing going on.
@@AnnaLVajdathe darkest art shows the truth of every age.

I have never heard anything like this before in my life ......
+Jules Dash You have missed a great deal...
Jules, in a way, I"m envious. I've been a fan, well, ever since Tom and I had a smoke together in this little club in San Diego many years ago. Anyway, you have the amazing opportunity to start at the beginning (and I suggest you do) and listen to everything this master of music has to offer. We all have our favorites, and Tom is one of mine. If he's not one of yours... well... um... you're just wrong.
+whaddabunchashit That slow trumpete is simply killing me, its so beautiful.
me too but its really cool
+Jules Dash Mr. Waits would take that as a huge complement. ;)
Tom Waits' music is Beatnik poetry drunkenly sung over jazz played by demons.
Tom is mad. I love it
God is mad, Tom is normal, mad equals normal, Tom is God.
Inna fades .ca Vida
The world is mad. Tom observes.
Crazy absurdism, the kurt weil years were glorious
Is it just me or does he kind of have a Ed Gein look to him
This is heavier than most actual metal bands.
YES! It embodies the bleakness and mis
anthropy many metal bands try to achieve and fail.
Agreed
@@HansBethe C'est pas faux
Because Tom Waits is a musical genius
There's no metal bands playing a polka either.

I wish I'd known that line years ago.
Just played this around my 7 month old son and he was absolutely intrigued. His eyes got so wide! Maybe Tom Waits' smallest fan? Haha!

He's not an artist, he's a force of nature that shows us how art is made.
There is an existential terror behind this man's work. This epitomizes it in a way that is somehow beautiful.
There's always free cheddar in the mouse trap, baby! It's a deal!
Damn now this is line is good. You come up with it?
The man who is his own genre.
Perfect song for 2020. And may Tom Waits live forever!

I didn't know that was something I needed til now 😂
Fk yes 😂
This is the best song of all time
He's been good for a long time , provoking thought
--------------
Every time I listened to his songs, I always thought that Tom Waits it is a big black guy. What was my surprise when 20 years ago, I saw him in the movie "Coffee and Cigarettes".
Tom's voice is gorgeous. And his acting talent is worthy of special admiration!!!
@@agripper4078 Вы имеди в виду трапецивидные, наверное? 🙂
It is certainly feeling that way these days.
I think you are the only one on here that gets it
one of the most brilliant writers in contemporary music. It's just that the gravelly voice perhaps is best taken in small doses.
Ostriches and bubbles. Why? Because it's Tom friggin Waits, that's why.
Best thing I've read all day!
Aramis419 it looks like an emu
They're emus.
Those are god damn emus
It is a miracle! Tom Waits has turned Emu's into Ostriches!
I'd sell your heart to the junkman baby

To pull you out of that ditch
You're out of luck, you're out of luck

In the boiler room
The poor, the lame, the blind

Killers, thieves, and lawyers
God's away, God's away,
God's away on Business. Business.
God's away, God's away,
God's away on Business. Business.
Digging up the dead with
A shovel and a pick
It's a job, it's a job
Bloody moon rising with
A plague and a flood
Join the mob, join the mob
It's all over, it's all over, it's all over
There's a leak, there's a leak,
In the boiler room
The poor, the lame, the blind
Who are the ones that we kept in charge?

God's away, God's away, God's away
On Business. Business.
God's away, God's away,
On Business. Business.
[Instrumental Break]
Goddamn there's always such
A big temptation
To be good, To be good
There's always free cheddar in
A mousetrap, baby
It's a deal, it's a deal
God's away, God's away, God's away
On Business. Business.
God's away, God's away, God's away
On Business. Business.

Let her ring, let her ring
God's away, God's away,
God's away on Business.
God's away, God's away,
God's away on Business.

Thanks for the text. I was able to translate it into Russian. I live in Russia and have been listening to Tom for a long time.
On the Google Search Page's "People also ask": "Is Tom Waits a character"?". Lol. No, he's a legend.
This is the song that runs thru the end credits of the movie, "The Smartest Guys in the Room" about the Enron fraud. This is a marvelous song, and Tom Waits adds that mysterious, evil aura to it.
Tom Waits is one of those unique artists who you just can't compare to anything.
When your world seems to be more crazy every day and you can barely get up in the morning and go to work...Play this song and you will understand.
It definitely is an acquired taste. I grew up with my mom listening to him, and I've come to like it, in all it's hilarity and uniqueness
"At noon Elijah mocked them, 'Yell louder! After all, he is a god; he may be deep in thought, or perhaps he stepped out for a moment or has taken a trip. Perhaps he is sleeping and needs to be awakened.'" 1 Kings 18:27
This song is pure prophecy about the apocalyptic rot of America. In a class with The Doors' "The End," amother eschatological classic!
This was the first song I ever heard by tom waits and it blew my mind what a strange dark cool sound that this man had/has. I didn't know what the song was called I've been looking for it for years! Every so often I would type in tom waits and listen to every song I came across. Finally, I love it
this is the most metal non metal song i’ve heard yet. Waits is an all time great.
Every word so true. 😢
one interviewer asked tom about caring about what peole think, he said he was more worried about whether there were nightclubs in heaven
Tom Waits has a great voice.
for a cookie monster
God's away on business,,who thinks of that line,,fkn brilliant
Mr. Waits of course! Man has a brilliant mind. And his lovely wife contributes as well. 🇨🇦🖖🏻🇨🇦
If i HAD to try and put a name to his style, the best i could do is "bowery noir": its the kind of music you'd expect to hear from an old hobo, the kind who has seen everything, done everything and now all he has to do is sit on a street corner or an allyway, singing his wisdom to anyone sharp enough who will pay attention
In the end, there really is no other way to describe tom waits other than his own style. And i love every minute of it
Best “Let her ring” ever spoken or sung. Ever! #loveTomWaits
You could tell me that Tom and Ron pearlman are brothers and I wouldn't even blink, same face

Damn, his voice is incredible!
I've never heard music like this before. I listen to steampunk sounding music, but I've never heard music like this. Such a strange rhythm. My new favorite music artist!
Ever since I heard his voice, I was hooked. A guy who never made me feel bad for going against what's called "normal".....
Just incredible

My favorite song of all time
I never get sick of this song. I first heard it many years ago when I watched "Smartest Guys In The Room" probably 05
Just watched that movie today and was immediately drawn to this song
One of the few true originals in music today. He never makes uninteresting music.
to understand the video it's helpful to know what was "the emu war"
I particularly love this kind of Tom Waits' music. The kind that could, in some alternate universe, be the soundtrack to a twisted classic Walt Disney film. I swear it seems to me that in during the last 20 years, Tom Waits has found a muse in sea shanties of old and vintage Disney tunes. Every one of his albums in that span of time has at least one song seemingly derived from those two styles.
Hell Broke Luce was used in the Punisher series, so we're a step closer to this being a reality.
Have you heard his cover of the Hi Ho song from Snow White? It was on a late 80s Disney tribute lp but his was so dark Disney threatened to sue if they didn't remove it from the album. The album got recalled and they took it out of print but it was already too late. It's up on TH-cam...
Such a great song. I always enjoyed the live version more though
