The best way is to use a chisel.
However, jigs using a router can be finely adjusted, so the dimensional accuracy is stable.

I've tried #4 a few different times and it sometimes ends up the way his did with leaving traces of some flat areas as his did in close inspection shown in the video. The others are great. Thanks

the angle grinder slide cut-off saw, the wooden vice for drill press, the way you used a wrench socket and with a drill bit driver as a 'lathe' chuck, and my favorite, the chuck for square stock. these are just a few of the excellent hacks/jigs/ideas here. the chuck for square stock is particularly inventive and useful. i have two comments about it. 1) the design would be improved with near-end adjustment bolts that move the drill side of the jaws outward so as to clamp down on the stock with leverage, and small pieces of coarse sandpaper glued to the wood pads would assist grip. 2) a similar hack built on steel round with jaws 120 degrees apart would work for round stock and bamboo
a note on dowels. it's pretty easy to fashion dowels from clear square stock. the problem is making them precisely (consistent diameter) and accurately (exact to a predetermined dimension). of these two problems, precision is probably more important than accuracy because if you have consistent diameter, you can probably find a fractional sized bit for it. it also helps if they have a somewhat textured finish to create more bonding surface for glue. it looked to me like the most promising method to get all these right might have been the jig saw blade method, but i'd love to hear your take on that
a minor correction to your terminology @7:24. a chamfer is traditionally a small 45 degree edge cut, can be done with a 45 degree bearing-guided router bit, a hand or power planer, or even with sandpaper. the 'chamfer' bit you referred to is usually called a quarter-round (4 x 1/4 = full round)

Short studs for positioning and clamps or cams to tighten in place might be ok for the template. For a no hassle structural dovel I think number two quite adequate, if accuracy or presentable surface is needed then numbers three or four.

Great hacks! #5 was maybe a bit overcomplicated (and a bit pricey if you don't have those parts lying around).
If I were to replicate one of these, I'd probably do #6, but shell out for some carbide utility knife blades and make the jig more or less permanent, with multiple sizes in mm increments. Those blades would last a long long time only cutting softwoods, even hardwoods I bet.

@@jisakukoboJust take it as a compliment. Most ppl would think a "hack" is something like a "quick & dirty" solution for a problem, something made of duct tape, chewing gum and 2 cable ties. Like replacing the busted belt of your alternator with the pantyhose of your girlfriend because you're in the middle of nowhere. It won't last for long, but it will get you to the next workshop. Your builds are ALWAYS far more then just "hacks"! My greatest respect from Germany *deepbow*

I've got a great hack for making a dowel too. Go to your key rack; then grab a fob and put it in your pocket. After that, go down to your car & get in. Turn on the ignition & drive down to your local hardware store or HD/Lowes & buy one. Much easier & quicker than fabricating a tool to fabricate a common dowel.
