- Multiple explosions have been reported in the Russian-occupied city of Melitopol, Ukraine, as well as in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic and annexed Crimea. CNN Senior International Correspondent Sam Kiley reports. #CNN #News
It should be noted that the target of the strike was a newly built Russian headquarters! This wasn't just a random missile attack on civilian infrastructure as some might say. The Ukrainians had intel that the headquarters was going to be full of VIPs at that time so it was a highly valuable target. From some accounts over 200 Russian military personnel were killed during the strike.
Yup, the accommodations definitely weren't for regulars, officer's barracks at the least, possibly some weighty brass in there. Russia will lie, of course, but we'll see who's seen and who's missing in the following weeks, how it affects the lines.

I think so too. When the soil is frozen Ukraine will start the attack. And the russians see that coming. That's why they ask for negotiations now. They know the ukrainians are coming for them as soon as the frost sets in, and they are not prepared.

I don't believe the Russians (nor the Ukrainians) really want any negotiations at this point. They both believe they will win. So I think a lot more is needed to be resolved on the battlefield before either part feels too much about to lose, and thus want negotiations.
I think Western leaders as well) only talk about negotiations to appease Western (and Ukrainian) voters who want peace now before realising why it's not yet time for negotiations (not that I don't want peace and soon, we all do - I just think it's impossible at this point).
I think PUTIN talks about negotiations to try to divide Western and Ukrainian voters. That is what Russian propaganda and mingling in Western politics had been about for years.
By dividing people with different opinions, getting them upset against eachother and/ or their government Putin hopes to slow Western support for Ukraine thus giving him a better chance for winning.
Putin does not want negotiations. Neither does Ukraine's side. But as long as Putin don't succeed in dividing Ukraine's supporters, as long as they stay united and strong in their support, Russia will be losing in the long run.

Sadly, this is a map of the pre-2022 borders. The actual amount of territory retaken is almost all of Kharkiv Oblast, and the north half of Kherson Oblast, which is still pretty impressive. If you're looking for accurate maps, I recommend the ISW's.

@@eh1702 The word going around is that top brass was gathered there for a meeting and HUNDREDS of them were KIA. So yeah, very worth it. Russians have a habit of this, they take over a hotel to put their leaders there (the guys who do the fighting don't get to live in hotels, they are made to camp in the woods) and then some Ukrainian guy walks by like he's on a cell phone, and the cell phone camera is streaming video of the location and the officers in front of the hotel so that Ukraine knows _exactly_ where to strike, and then OOPS! Later that night the hotel just magically turns into rubble. Ah-MAZING!!!

Mariupol, Volnovakha, Schastya, and many other Ukrainian cities have been literally wiped off the face of the earth. The people who fled from there and now live in refugee shelters have nowhere to come back.

Its hard not to have some sympathy for the mothers of the Russian cannon fodder. They are lied too, their sons are ill equipped (I have seen videos of paint gun helmets being given to Russian soldiers), they are not fed, they are very poorly trained, and they die. Right now the numbers per day have fallen to around 350 per day. It was 500 to 750 a week ago.

The reason Russians are showing a great effort towards Bakhmut is that their trying to take Ukrainians attention away from thoughts of advancing towards Crimea.

I recall an American at the time saying something like "if we could lose positions like this more often we'll have the war won in no time" referring to the sheer number of troops the attacking side loses in the capture of the piece of land.
