I'm so glad I came across this video, I thought my guava cuttings were dying. I removed the plastic covering too fast and unfortunately I can't see roots because I planted them in a black plastic container, and several of them at the same time. Next time I will remember to use a clear cup so I can see the roots
I did the same. Removed covering too soon. I have had success with cuttings without a covering. What are you trying to grow?
Oh something that's better than bags is plastic bottles with the bottom cut off. Can use the lid as a vent too.
@@medicinemom3620 I'm currently trying to grow guava, mandarin, mango and fig cuttings. Trying both soil and water propagation. I should have results with something in 2 weeks I believe. I was told figs are the easiest to propagate, we'll see

I found this helpful. Trying to root cuttings now and I'm not sure they are taking. I had leaves show and some roots but then the leaves all died. Roots don't look very healthy. I did have them on heat mat and like you mentioned I think it dried them out quickly. Some other cuttings just haven't done anything yet and I've been patiently waiting. I think my biggest problem is I'm doing this at not the ideal time of year. Figs are supposed to be dormant now and I'm trying to grow them.
Are they in an enclosed system? Heat mat set to 73F?
Many plants are typically rooted during their dormancy period in order to put off leaf growth until after root development. If they’re drying out then you’re going to have to mist them more often. It should be an extremely high humidity environment. A lack of root development means not enough time has passed for those individual cuttings to undergo cellular differentiation. Whatever you think patience is during the rooting process, enhance it and adapt. If roots aren’t there, enough time hasn’t passed. Though we can estimate approximate root development time, cuttings don’t always work on our schedule. You’re doing great, just don’t quit and always continue to learn from experience.
@@PlantFanatics I wrapped the cutting tops with parafilm and they are in clear cups. The cups were then wrapped with cling wrap to keep moisture inside so only the cutting was sticking out. They were on a heat mat inside my house but I don’t have a thermostat on the mat. I’ve ordered one though. They have been planted since Sept 24 with only roots showing on two of six cuttings. They had leaf growth but they died back. Roots aren’t large and bright white.
Fading leaves after removing the bag/humidity dome can also be partially cut. That reduces the evaporation of the plant and makes the recovering process easier. Preferably, before they fall of by themselves.

Once my small figs started showing mold effects in a cover, off the cap top. They keep that up, off the bottle cover. 3 of 4 with this problem made it.
If you are using a bag, just cut holes in it. You can cut bigger holes or more holes after a few days have passed.

@@PlantFanatics I have definitely killed few by too much water. I would say that if you think it is too dry, it is perfect. They seem be be extremely delicate to environmental changes like temp and especially humidity. I struggle with white mold and fungus gnats. If I could only be successful at those two things I could double my cutting success. I tried the hydrogen peroxide spray with no luck. Maybe I had watered it down too much? For the gnats, I am trying out Thuricide and yellow sticky traps.
@@TheNCGardener yup. If I have any cuttings that die it’s basically 100% due to overwatering. It’s also tough because some varieties require more or less moisture than others while rooting.
For the mold we use a mixture of 4 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide to 10 tablespoons of water. I’ve found the key is to really let the solution evaporate before putting the bag back over it or the mold will come back pretty quickly.
We just put out a video about fungus gnats you should check out. I believe we have the 3 methods we use to get rid of fungus gnats in there and they basically eliminated the problem.
Very helpful information! I was gifted 9 fig cuttings, and they all had developed leaves and were looking great. I'm growing them in clear cups (with holes), so I can see that some have roots showing and some do not. The only thing I did before the leaves started to dry up and fall off was move them from one part of the living room to another and put them under a different grow light? 3 of the 9 still have leaves. Could the move and the change in a different light cause the leaves to fall off? Thank you in advance for your reply.
I took cuttings 1st week of Feb, put them into the same cup setup as yours. 3 days ago, I noticed two cuttings had alot of beautiful white roots showing, no buds on these ones, so because there were so many roots that also began twisting around the bottom of the cup, I carefully up potted them to a one size bigger nursery pot..basically a 4x4 square pot". My question is...should i have done that so soon? And, should they be put under the grow lights now? and when should they be put outside..ie. Temperature range. Thankyou

Yeah folks do like respectable people, it sounds generic but I always went out of my way to help folks who where polite to me. It was genuinely rare for folks to just be polite, you could say I worked in customer service to a degree, and I would always do everything in my power to help folks who made my life easier.
I've always lived by the philosophy of treat others who you wish to be treated, if you make my job difficult I will make yours difficult, however on the rare occasion someone was genuinely polite I would go out of my way to do my best to get them the outcome they wanted. Reward behavior you want to see in others.

Hi I live in Sri Lanka. Its a tropical island. I brought a steam from Oman n planted it after keeping it in the water and there was new small leaves. I planted it 3 weeks back. Not the plant is just as I kept in the pot. Does it need more sunlight and water? I'm worried coz it might die

Watering is simply a matter of how dry the soil is, and not necessarily just a product of a timed schedule. Its imperative to learn how to tell when your soil is dry. With cuttings this becomes even more important than with a rooted plant. If the soil is dry 2 inches down, it’s probably dry at the bottom and needs to be watered.

Never cover hardwood cuttings. It's totally unnecessary and introduces a lot of problems. Problems 2 and 3 from this video would be completely eliminated by not covering the cutting. It's softwood cuttings that need to be covered.

Rooting powder is absolutely terrible. I suggest using a liquid rooting hormone. I use DipNGrow.
