I used to live in Woodbridge and Edison,NJ but I was born in Perth Amboy, NJ. My mom used to grow fig trees, before the winter her Portuguese friend would dig a trench, cover the soft tree with burlap, and bend it into the trench and bury it with leaves and soil. In the spring dig it out, and support the tree with tie stakes. Now I live in Puerto Rico. I have 3.5 acre property. I grow passion fruit, bananas, papaya, orange trees, vegetables.
Definitely different from my region on propagation. We take a large bucket, throw some soil and water and just stick in the sticks. I’m in the south though so plenty of humidity and doesn’t get too cold.
Maybe your recommendations are the best fro NJ. But in TX, I usually cut only 3-4 inch branch tips, and they propagate like gangbusters! Often longer tips are unduly stressed by the quick Spring heating up of the temperatures here.

My Croatian grandfather had a fig tree in his yard in Jersey City, NJ. He’s long gone but I have a Croatian friend who has trees from there and I can get some cuttings from him. Thank you so much for showing me how to do it!
2 cup method. Red cup on the outside...clear cup with a few holes in them to sit inside the red cups so I can see any root growth. Awesome. Did cuttings 1st week in Feb, and just a few days ago, i noticed two of them had a lot of white roots, so I up potted them into 4x4 pots and now under the lights. Yehh, first timer here and i am so happy for the two. Theres more, so I shall wait and see. These are Desert King variety, great for lower mainland Vancouver BC climate. Cheers
my father carried a branch on the plane from greece now we have 5 giant fig trees in NY and NJ i been wanting to cultivate some of it and make more so this video was really helpful!
A few years ago, I decided to try using pallets to create a grow bed. I do not have most of those tools and trying to get the nails out 🤦🏽♀️!!! I used my dad's handsaw and decided it would take too long. You were able to build the bed I want. Niiiiice!

You should try growing Chicago Hardy figs in NJ. It may be the most productive variety with the biggest crop, and it does well in cold weather. Delicious, too.
Hello, I took some cuttings when I was moving last month. I put them in the plastic bag on the refrigerator like you said and they have started getting little white roots. so pumped.
Hi James and Tuck, I did your seed saving for tomatoes, I purchased an heirloom tomato and followed your video last fall, stored the seeds in the refrigerator until 8 days ago when I put 5 seeds in worm castings “ home made “ and 5 seeds in a moist paper towel to see if they will sprout, well both ways were successful Thanks I’m going to have some great tomatoes this summer. I always wanted to plant a fig - my father (total Italian) could not grow them in this weather - so never gave it a thought - now, definitely going to give it a try. Also wanted to let you know I put up hoop house following your instructions & I'll be damned, it's 11/15/22 & I have celery & actually just planted kale I just noticed I've got starts. YES! I've got a started "Golden Riverside" fig that is potted and rooting out. I'm grateful for how easy figs are to work with, compared to more temperamental types of fruit.

Dude I have two fig trees, but I don't know what they're called. They're both ancient! One grows over a spring and throws out honey flavoured light coloured figs the size of pears. The lorikeets love them, so I let them be so I can have the other tree to myself. This tree is MASSIVE!! Again, greenish coloured figs, but man such a dark sticky inside with strawberry-raspberry jam flavoured goodness. These are my favourites, but I have three types of pest, brown rats, possums, and my mates!! This is the tree I'm going to take cuttings from this coming winter, so thanks for a great video! Wish I could share photos with you of these trees, their fruit, and the lorikeets lol

James dont worry about the rooting hormone coming off... as you force the stick in, the hormone will come off, but it will works its way up the stick that may not have any on it. Even with powder, this is all good stuff. The dipped portion is never going to be lose all the hormone by doing this. I am not sure where this notion came from, but it is very common misconception in the hobby.
I started propagating my figs by cuttings last year. This year I bought cuttings for at least 12 different varieties and will start them this weekend. I think I went a little overboard, but, you can always give extra plants away to friends. There's only a few that'll survive zone 6b (i.e. hardy chicago), so most of mine will stay in pots (they go dormant and then hang out in the garage). It's pretty easy to become a fig-fanatic ;)
I grafted my fig tree from my mother's 40-year-old fig tree. Mine is beautiful and now that it's shoulder hi, I think it's 3 years old now, I think I could graft it, but it's June now, and there's fruit on the tree so I'm guessing it's a bad time of year to try to do anything like that. SO easy! I used to do this as a newbie to trade and sell fig trees when I was building my collection. I didn't know all of this stuff, but I did know about the rooting hormone. I didn't need it for my figs though. I just did mine outside but near the house. Very very easy!

Iv got a Turkey fig tree growing in my pollytunnel in the uk, I did a airlayer on one of the branch last year on the fig tree and it was a success, I did it with coco coir, great video for a beginner 👍
Love figs when I was young I was small and thin and every time I went to my grandmothers house she would make me eat a fig persevere sandwich to help me grow.

I've lost so many clippings due to the fact that I tried to use compost and soil instead of peat moss and sand. I think I finally figured it out my attempt last night.
So I don't do all that.... I bend down a beach, cover it with soil (leave the tip sticking out) and place a rock over it to hold it down. Tara, it will root while still attached to the tree. Then just cut off from behind the new roots the next spring. Works everytime. Hope that helps someone.

Wow! This is a great topic! A friend just gave me a fig sapling, not that big, may be just below my knee. If cutting is OK, I may want to do the cutting. I am from Malaysia. Fig is now trendy in Malaysia, like grape once was. Everybody wants to grow fig in Malaysia, many are already doing so.Malaysians kind of think fig as an exotic temperate crop but able to grow in Malaysian tropical climate.

These are my favourites, but I have three types of pest, brown rats, possums, and my mates!! This is the tree I'm going to take cuttings from this coming winter, so thanks for a great video! Hello, jersey girl here I’m going to try your method. I have a beautiful fig tree I planted about 4 years ago and I’ve been trying to root from clippings but no success. James dont worry about the rooting hormone coming off... as you force the stick in, the hormone will come off, but it will works its way up the stick that may not have any on it. Even with powder, this is all good stuff. The dipped portion is never going to be lose all the hormone by doing this. I am not sure where this notion came from, but it is very common misconception in the hobby.
I started propagating my figs by cuttings last year. This year I bought cuttings for at least 12 different varieties and will start them this weekend. I think I went a little overboard, but, you can always give extra plants away to friends. There's only a few that'll survive zone 6b (i.e. hardy chicago), so most of mine will stay in pots (they go dormant and then hang out in the garage). It's pretty easy to become a fig-fanatic ;)
I grafted my fig tree from my mother's 40-year-old fig tree. Mine is beautiful and now that it's shoulder hi, I think it's 3 years old now, I think I could graft it, but it's June now, and there's fruit on the tree so I'm guessing it's a bad time of year to try to do anything like that.

SO easy! I used to do this as a newbie to trade and sell fig trees when I was building my collection. I didn't know all of this stuff, but I did know about the rooting hormone. I didn't need it for my figs though. I just did mine outside but near the house. Very very easy!

Iv got a Turkey fig tree growing in my pollytunnel in the uk, I did a airlayer on one of the branch last year on the fig tree and it was a success, I did it with coco coir, great video for a beginner 👍

Love figs when I was young I was small and thin and every time I went to my grandmothers house she would make me eat a fig persevere sandwich to help me grow.

I've lost so many clippings due to the fact that I tried to use compost and soil instead of peat moss and sand. I think I finally figured it out my attempt last night.
So I don't do all that.... I bend down a beach, cover it with soil (leave the tip sticking out) and place a rock over it to hold it down. Tara, it will root while still attached to the tree. Then just cut off from behind the new roots the next spring. Works everytime. Hope that helps someone.

Wow! This is a great topic! A friend just gave me a fig sapling, not that big, may be just below my knee. If cutting is OK, I may want to do the cutting. I am from Malaysia. Fig is now trendy in Malaysia, like grape once was. Everybody wants to grow fig in Malaysia, many are already doing so.Malaysians kind of think fig as an exotic temperate crop but able to grow in Malaysian tropical climate.
