    Lucid doesn't get nearly enough credit. So glad you broke this down the way you did. For 3-yr old technology to still beat Porsches latest and greatest is simply unbelievable!! Love what Lucid is doing and where they're focus is 👍 Too bad they didn't make the air a hatchback.

    I love travelling in my Air GT. Not only is it wonderful to drive and just be in, but the range and efficiency are enough that I don't have to be particularly efficient. With AC blasting in the Texas heat I'm usually going 80-85 on grippy but inefficient 21" tires. Whatever I'm driving I will stop every 2 to 2.5 hours just to stand up and stretch to keep my mind fresh and in the game. Stopping at an EA station in a Walmart parking lot the car has usually added more charge than I need in the time it takes to visit the restroom and buy a soda. If I'm getting a bite to eat I use the 150kW charger to free up a 350 for someone in a hurry. The GT can charge faster than What-a-Burger can make a spicy chicken sandwich, but that's not saying much. It is rare that I will charge beyond 60% when travelling by freeway. For comparison 60% in the Air GT is equivalent to an 86% charge in the big battery Model 3. I save deep charges for drives out into the boonies where the roads get twisty and the GT's great handling really shines.

      unfortunately we won't see the best charging cars in north america for a while. The Li Mega or zeeker001 can charge at peak>500 kW and still hit 250kW+ at 80% in real world tests which they hit in 10-12 minutes from 10%.

    Love it! Seems like it charges as fast as the Ioniq 5 but doesn’t dip as much after 80%. Lucid deserves all the credit

    another important aspect that was not mentioned is the cost, because of Lucid efficiency it is the cheapest to drive that distance, so I would like to see a cost per mile mentioned and I'm sure Silverado EV would be at least twice as high. Granted those are very different vehicles but the price is similar.

    Just drove an LFP Model Y 1200 klms over 3 days . Left fully charged and charged over night each night. Supercharging during each day was so fast we barely had time to get take away coffees and we could have spent half the time eating our take away lunches. A good supercharging network at good rest stops is all that is needed. This Model Y only had a range of around 380 klms at highway speeds and the temperature was between 1 and 17 degrees Celsius. Longer ranges and better charging speeds are important advances but cheaper reliable EVs are the answer to market dominance.

      Exactly. I just drove from Connecticut to Florida in my Model Y. That's about 1,300 miles that I drove in about 31 hours including stops to sleep. Charging speed is NOT an issue, and if we want to speed up the transition to EVs, we need to stop talking about it as if it's a problem yet to be fixed. Sure, it's going to get even better: there will be many more chargers, and cars will charge faster, but that's no reason to delay things. Driving an EV is already a far superior (and cheaper!) experience.

      On our road trips the issue has always been do we have enough time to run in store xyz and grab something before its done charging. Most of the time we are racing back to the charger.

      My MYLR never gets the advertised range once I get on the highway. Having a car like the lucid or Rivian that are able to get extremely close to their range even on the highway is great. And now that pretty much every EV is going to be able to use superchargers ppl have actual choices and that’s never a bad thing.

      @@Sw33tBabyRays No car gets the advertised mpg or mpge. That's especially true on the highway, where the advertised rates are based on speeds much closer to or lower than the speed limit.

    I am a big advocate of the thermal management system to have more robust compressors and being able to reach temperatures around 250C in heat rejection condensing side. This massively improves heat rejection from battery packs and even in hot dry days of Nevada or Arizona deserts, when heat rejection is the hardest.
    Porsche has significantly higher pressure compressors in the thermal management system of the car and this is also why it can sustain a very high charging speed till it reaches 90%.

    My guess is that the time to reach 75 or 80% SOC would be almost the same when charging with a 150kw DCFC, since there'd be less heat build up and probably a flatter charge curve.

    Just top notch to see these tests, mind you I am a EV nurd but these are great for any EV interested person who can select the best vehicle for their needs, my Sunshine Coast GM dealer did get a Silverado WT4 EV in which she confused with the RST, unfortunately they were told by GM that the battery on that VIN needs to be replaced (possibly module/s (recall issued by GM), which is no problem as that dealer is the highest EV sales dealer in all of Canada maybe in North America so they have done many Bolt Battery replacements etc. With the great Ultium battery modules that can be interchanged with any GM Ultium vehicle no issues (their BMS communicates with all the modules via WiFi) . I just might order a A2Z NACS adapter as the RST may come in just when GM/Tesla enables NACS charging on their version 3 and 3+ Tesla superchargers. Thanks Tom!

    Every EV owner that thinks staying until 100% is a necessary, needs to watch Tom's video. So many people saying "I am here and I am getting 100%". Its simple math that so many EV owners just can't comprehend.

      Prices I've seen in my area have the Ioniq 6 costing more than a Model Y, and the Y has access to more superchargers.

    For the US. The Lucid is the most efficient charging EV on the market. That is rate of charging for mileage able to drive. The Lucid is full of amazing technology. Those motors are timely and very efficient.

    Nice presentation. I am considering moving from a Tesla Model S to a Lucid. Question…What was the out of pocket cost for this specific charging session?

      The cost to charge will vary greatly depending on where you charge. For instance, if I charged the (0 to 100%) at home, it would have cost me $20. When I use public DC fast chargers, like in this instance, it can cost $40 to $80, depending on what network you charge on and whether or not you have a subscription to that network. I don't pay attention much to how much it costs when I use public chargers because I use them so infrequently, it doesn't matter if I pay a little more when I do need to use them on a long road trip. 90+% of my charging is at home where it's always less expensive.

    Rather than just verbally describing the Silverado and the Taycan statistics, it would be more helpful to provide a table or chart to compare their numbers (in miles per minute), starting at realistic points like 10% or 20% state of charge. You make good charts.

    Nice to see Lucid has lowered the price of air GT. I briefly owned a ‘23 for several weeks after paying $155K, but couldn’t deal with multiple software bugs, Alexa, difficult charging door, and phone charging clamshell, so returned it. Hopefully it’s a better EV now.

      @johnpoldo8817 That's what most people, especially non ev owner don't understand. It's the over package of the ev. Efficiency doesn't even matter. That's the reason that the Tesla Model Y is the best selling car on earth.

    Great review, but I just can’t figure out why the car company whose product has the best efficiency, best range, fastest charging, and most luxury, can’t even make $0.01 of profit off the sale of one of their vehicles?

      That's very easy to answer. No car company makes money on its first model, it's impossible with the amount of investment needed. It took Tesla 10 years to be profitable and they were on their third vehicle when that happened.

      It's called CapEx. You have to build a factory and fill it equipment before you build just one car. Until you get to a certain volume, it's not profitable.

    We need the 70mph Chevy Silverado RST EV range and charging test, I am thinking this will beat the Lucid although at 2X the amount of KWH's. Also the Audi Q-6 large pack would be an interesting charge test.

      I'll do that in September, and yes, it will take in kWh faster than the Air, but as you said, that's not surprising since the battery is almost 2X.

    Great analysis. I would assume we get the "same" curve on gravity. That would be the ultimate family long distance hauler. Personally I would like the curve to be more flat. Rather have fewer stops. But I guess with this efficency it still would be my blather that made the limits, not the range.

    For these big range numbers of 400+ miles, it’s clear we need big batteries but in smaller physical sizes. When we get a 120kWh pack in the same size/weight as what a Tesla Model 3 LR has now, we’ll be blowing past ICE cars on road trips.

      The 2024 grand touring should already have the heat pump. In 2025 the rest of the trim levels get it.

    Excellent analysis! I really like how you breakdown the data in real world terms like miles/minute.
    One thought about charging past your peak curve. If another reliable charging station can be reached with another 10 minutes or so of charging it might be worth getting 10mi/min to be able to skip a charging session, arrive lower ready for a higher rate of charge etc…
    I think using mi/min helps users make this calculation more easily.
    Lastly these tests should come with a disclaimer that one of one is an anecdote not statistics as the sample size is way to small to draw conclusions. That said it is an excellently executed anecdote!

      Have you seen Bjorn Nyland's "1,000km Challenge" videos? He does as you describe, trying to only charge at peak rate and move quickly to next charging stop, trying to get the best possible elapsed time over a 1,000km circuit in a variety of cars.

    I’ve got the traditional charge curve out of my IONIQ 5 (241kW peak, 65kWh in 22 minutes, 70% in 17 minutes) but in the summertime it seems to carry a much higher plateau but then dips to a 35kW plateau at the end. Regardless of when it drops or how low it drops or what time of the year it is, I am never charging after it drops. There is always a charger that is in my future that I will charge at rather than wait for the kilowatt hour to increase like the Air or trickle (35kW) in. DROP-STOP-ROLL 💯 18:45

    I would suggest "miles added after 15 minutes from 20% state of charge" That's a good amount of road trip stopping time.

    What is charge power when plugged in at 30%, 50%, 70%? If they are different (higher) from 0-100% charging at same point, this session was thermally limited.

    So if you plug in when the car is at 50% SOC will it jump back up to the top of the charging speed until it gets hot again? Just curious how it behaves if you are not at the bottom of the pack when you start the charge sort of like the Lightning does with that boost mode.

After watching Kyle try to use the Lucid to do the Canonball run and the challenges he had with charging and thermal management I am hoping that Lucid has sorted out those issues. It really is a car worthy of acknowledgement and praise. If they have sorted those things out I would love to see Lucid break the EV Canonball record.

      Miles is all that matters. High kwh into a vehicle with bad efficiency is useless - unless you are towing or hauling.

    A Hummer EV or Silverado EV may be able to charge at 360kW, but they're giant inefficient vehicles; the massively better efficiency of the Lucid makes it much better. Also why the Hyundai Ioniq 6 does so well in spite of its max charging rate in kW being so much lower.

      I don't, but that's very easy because the charging curve is perfectly flat until about 98/99%

      The base model Air Pure starts at $69,900, less than a Model S but with a longer 420 mile EPA range. BTW, no chance those numbers are completely random 😎

    0-100% charge times is not what anyone does or need in real life, you just charge while sleeping. However, 10-80% much more realistic for a rushed trip.

    Love the charge curve from 0%. Great coverage of great engineering. However. I feel like the 10/15% to 80/85% session is a more important metric as most who would be road tripping would not risk getting to 0%.
    Will it still hit over 300kW when starting at 15%? When in in warmer conditions like you observed, would starting at that higher percentage possibly avoid the "dip" that you observed? At the very least, the curve could have shifted-right to the point in the pack where thermal de-rating would align with state of charge de-rating.

      In the real world, it doesn't matter. The fact is that if you're on a long trip, charging is very often faster than you are. By the time you use the bathroom and get a drink/snack, the car is often ready and waiting.

      I usually try to arrive with about 10% in my Air GT, but an indicated 10% is still well over 50 miles of range in that car. There is really no reason to fast charge the car to 85% since even driving inefficiently that is over 300 miles of range. But in answer to your first question, Yes, the GT will charge at 300+kW if plugged in at 10 or even 15% and the charger is having a good day. The main thing about travelling in the GT is that you don't have to stress so much about charging. I did at first, but this car makes it easy to just relax and go.

      @@aex90832 Maybe, but I think the it's more important to know that there are reliable charging stations available along, or near your route. Now that Tesla has opened up their network to other makes, I think it's more productive to have videos about how the other networks are improving (or not) and growing. I own a Tesla and I have a fair amount of TSLA shares, but I don't want their charging network to be the only option.

    Every kWh goes into the battery cost money, most milage gain over least time/kWh is the winner of time/money saver.

    This is unrelated to this video, but maybe you can answer this for me. I bitched I complain about getting my Tesla adapter for my Mach. Mustang got finally talk to someone in charge at Ford and she told me I was the 1935 order. I still haven’t received my adapter what’s up

      Tesla wasn't able to produce them as fast as Ford expected. Ford is getting them from Tesla, they don't control the supply.

    As Kyle always says is range and charging speed (amount of time spent at charger for how far you can drive) which makes EVs great!

    Good to see faster charging speeds, but really how do people really use EV’s?. Only 5% of use is road tripping so who cares if it took 20 minutes to charge instead of 30 minutes. This video makes good points that management of how you charge saves the most time. Lucid looks like a cool car but sadly 590 were sold in June.

      I know people that use their EV for work and they can drive 200-300 miles in a day if they have to visit customers far away. It's very important to some people indeed.

    No EV in 2024, even more over 100k sticker price, should thermal throttle while charging.
    They should upgrade the battery cooling, or, my preferred solution: adopting "tabless" technology (like Tesla's 4680 cells), but in Lucid's 21700 cells. Yes, they exist, they're already being used in power tool.
