He’s assertive and I like that in a man.” From an early age, she had the Stepford wife attitudes instilled in her: “My mum told me, ‘be pretty and in good shape because nobody wants a fat and ugly wife'.” Her subservient nature goes beyond the kitchen and into the bedroom, where John is allowed to sleep with other women. This setup works for John’s values too, “I’m the man and I make the rules around the house”, he explained. “Sleeping with other women is a luxury that most guys wish they had. People in open relationships just don't see sex as a deal breaker. And why should it be? It's just sex. Just because one partner (or both) has sex with other people, doesn't mean there isn't as much long term love there, or that they're going to run off with the other sexual partner. It also means that cheating is out of the equation if you don't care so much about it. Cheating is a main cause of divorce/breakups. In open relationships there is no cheating, just honesty and consensual freedom.

First time it took me three years to leave cuz I thought that was the relationship dynamic i deserved. Otherworldly punishment and emotional distress, you name it. But there was no peace. Ever. The second time it took me three months. And it only took me that long because that is how long it took them to show their true colors in blatant red flags and i said no. No to all of it. And ran. I knew the signs by then and still had a great support system for rebuilding afterwards (financially mostly due to me having to take said ex to court to get my stolen dog back 🙃)
I was raised in an environment where if you said no, there would be consequences. Never saying no and never standing up for yourself becomes subconscious and an automatic response because you have been deeply indoctrinated and programmed to be that way. You think it's your natural personality and temperament to be highly agreeable, fearful, and submissive and your real self (the one that feels angry and wants to stand up for themselves) is deeply buried and repressed. You have no sense of self or identity.
