Before my fiance was taken from my by a drunk driver we planed on this being our song at our wedding. Now every time I hear it I think of her and always cry thinking of what should have been. My heart is always with her and I know she is still with me in my heart.
@JK_Jirachi don't let it be darker, I cry everytime but I also smile. I got to share a song and part of my life with a beautiful woman and we danced and smiled so even in my tears this song is a blessing on my life.
That has honestly got to be one of the saddest things I’ve ever heard, this song already makes me tear up every time I hear it and now I’m crying a little. So sorry to hear that man, my heart breaks for you.
All of the Kingdom Hearts themes hold such passion and emotion in them. Brings the whole series together when the music is incorporated into the Franchise big time :) ! Couldn't agree with you more :)!
She can actually speak fluent English and Japanese. Her Japanese accent here is thick so that her Japanese fanbase can understand her more better instead of switching between accents.
***** I think he meant that when Utada sings in Japanese, for example, there is no hint of her American accent, be it anything that would affect the way she speaks or sings fluent Japanese. Ditto in English.
She grew up in America, and I believe her first language was English but she was taught Japanese by her parents growing up? or something as a secondary language. Technically she is a native speaker of both? But that's the amazing thing about Utada Hikaru she can sing her songs in both English AND Japanese fluently and make it sound just as beautiful in both languages without the studios needing to hire someone else to sing em in English! Praise the Hikaru!
So I've heard this song over & over many times, I think it was even on my first iPod as a kid. Listening to the acoustic version and the raw emotion Ms Utada brings finally made me sit down and actually listen to what the song is about. It always sounds like a sweet poppy love song before I heard this version but I think I finally understand that is a song about two lovers realizing that they aren't right for each other. This song is their last few moments together before a "clean break". But the irony of a "clean break" is that there is never anything simple or clean about it--emotions are messy and when your heart is broken the pieces are shattered everywhere and sometimes loving someone just isn't enough for a relationship to work--no matter how much you love each other and how much mutual respect you have for each other things can't always work out. I'm very moved by this performance and glad to understand it.
I hope you realize that Utada herself has stated that the song has no meaning. She wrote it in under a day as well, so very little thought went into it's production.
+Nep Nep "Death of the Author" - If the song can be interpreted like +AndreaInspired did, then that is just as valuable, if not more, than how the author intended. I loved the interpretation he gave, and it made me enjoy the song even more.
Also, a fun fact, this was recorded on her 20th birthday. So even though she was so young, her voice was incredibly powerful. That's not something that's easy to achieve at such a young age :)
Obviously How's that interesting ? In a country where then 0,4% are foreigners and of those 0,4% 0,3% of them are Chinese who'd care about Madonna ? and even more understand what she's singing about ? People didn't really go to TH-cam for lyrics videos 30 years ago.
I’m married to someone else now, but in my early teens I just knew she’d be my wife one day. I’m sorry Utada, I betrayed our future that never was but was meant to be.
It's so weird knowing that this was a song. Like, it wasn't a song FOR a game. She made it as a single. Like, every time I listen to it all I can think of is Kingdom Hearts. I wonder how it would've been if I just stumbled upon this and didn't know it was used in a game.
That was me. xD I don't know how I came across this video when it was first posted a long time ago, but I liked the song. Didn't realize it was part of a video game, namely *the* Kingdom Hearts game. Not the most die-hard of KH fans though. A while after watching this live performance, I got ahold of and finished the 2nd game way back in middle school, never got to finish the 1st game because navigating to the next world became a damn hassle, so Sora and crew are currently in limbo...
It's crazy how a song has so much significance just because it represented a significant part of your childhood. Her voice inevitably gives me goosebumps. Wish I could tell her in person many thanks for the inspiration she has been and the great phenomenological essence she brings through her voice.
- P0IZENEDIVY - Hopefully she contributes to Kingdom Hearts III, it'd be amazing and monumental as well, considering it'll be the end of the Xehanort Saga.

OKAY. So I'm seeing a lot of comments about people being shocked of Utada's accent completely disappearing when she began to sing in English. First off, Utada's parents are Japanese but she was born in New York and lived there for half her life, and learned BOTH English and Japanese as her first language, and being around people who have different accents, you can master both of them at a young age BECAUSE you are young. Because your brain is more susceptible to learning things because your synapses aren't closed off or disappearing. She knows English and Japanese and has both accents because she grew up with both of them.
It's the same for most kids with migrant/foreign parents. They became fluent in both the language of their parents and the language of their school/friends.
joshua gorski well the problem is, why they take simple and clean and sanctuary so often and don't take a new one or asking her to make a new one ? Because the others probably don't fit with the meaning of the game or she don't want to. I mean.. do you read or hear that she does anything ? The last album I know is from 2010 or something. It's like she quits singing though ... :(
joshua gorski They will definitely make a new song since this is the 3rd, and its a main game, but Not sure if they will get her back, but she is making a new album now, so I actually think she will be back for KH3
In the 1990s, the heyday of Japanese music, she accomplished immortality at the age of 15 with album sales of 8 million, which later became a Japanese record. And now, at 40 years of age, she continues to be active at the forefront of the music industry. From Some Japanese.
Im an emotional wreck. I had so many emotions at once listening to this that I just kept crying. Ive heard this song all my life, but never live. Now I can put a name to a face. Fantastic job. Its beyond beautiful
Wow this is amazing-this makes it sound like a sad folk song. Her timbre is so intriguing in this raw, unprocessed vocal-I'm used to a little pitch correction on the higher parts, but the fragility and emotion is so pure here. I love her.
I honestly prefer this version of Simple and Clean to the Studio Version. There is such a raw emotion that I hear in her voice in this version and that's one of my favorite things about certain singers. Hikki is so vulnerable in this song and in this video in specific. She's putting all of her self in this video.
Disney provided the settings, characters and movie music licenses. That's all that Disney had to approve. Squaresoft made the game, story, and chose the singer and what music to have in the game, so no, they didn't need anyone's approval but their own. Tell me, where in the credits do you see anything Disney besides "characters created by" or anything like that?
+Xkavar Smith wrong. the reason Disney put their name on the product is because of money. Disney was paid for permission to use their properties. Disney would have approval over things like, how the characters were portrayed, how the worlds were designed, possibly even the voice actors for their characters. what they wouldn't have approval over is, how squares characters were portrayed, anything non Disney related, names of items, except for some keyblades, etc. when the Lego movie was being made, do you think they had to get permission from Lego on who they could cast or what songs they could use? no, because Lego provided the licenses to use the Lego name and all related Lego properties. the writers and director had final say over how the story was portrayed. you can keep reaching, it's cute but obvious you know nothing about how games are developed when using licenses. squares director and writer are who made the game what it is, they got hardly any help from Disney except for details on characters and worlds and keeping the story true to the source material of each world. the director and writer had choice over what music to pick and how it conveyed the story further through music.

Instant classic in the heart of many gamers. Over a decade old and hearing this song still raises so many memories and a strong sense of nostalgia. This series and the artists and composers and designers etc. Will live on throughout the years to come. Let the hype for the third installment begin.
I feel like anyone that grew up loving this will be part of a movement and friendship that no one else will know. Finding out someone else loves KH is life changing and gives you a special connection.
Ah, memories I haven't heard this song in awhile still great, watching during quarantine anyone else? *Sigh* who am I kidding probably not, if someone else does see this *YOU'RE A LEGEND AND I WISH YOU BE SUCCESSFUL AND FORTUNATE IN YOUR FUTURE*
i fell in love with this song when i first started the Kingdom Hearts series a long time ago... To this day I am still in love with her voice, that song will always be my favorite.
She has amazing lingual skills. Her transition from Japanese to (American) English is absolutely flawless. Even when she said "simple and clean" in a sentence, the actual words were in perfect English (the second time - the first time she slipped up and said the words with a Japanese accent, but she fixed that real quick).
Dude, based on the way she was speaking before she started singing, I would have had _zero_ idea that she spoke fluent English and was from New York. I have been to Japan, and she acts _super_ Japanese in this. It's quite remarkable. It's also my first time realizing what the lyrics of this song were about. It makes me sad now.
Not sure why this was on my suggestions but I remember playing Kingdom hearts on Playstation 2 when I was a little whipper snapper and this song was the theme. She has the voice of an angel.
i miss this songs.thanks for reuploading it again.its very lovable when im listening to this music.ill always cry when ill hear some of utada songs.keep up the good work utada.ill always support you in your songs.HIKKI FOREVER.
Haha I like how when she says simple and clean the first time while shes talking about it being the first version she uses a japanese accent to say it. Then, when she says "Please listen to this simple and clean" she uses an american accent.
To be honest. First time I watched this.. was when I was 7 years old. Hikari/Simple&Clean is a special song for me. I remember how I was amazed by How cute Utada Hikaru was at the beggining but sounded and looked like a goddess next. 2019 anyone?
Pure talent. Absolutely pure talent. Side note, this sounds really good with some geetar thrown in. Makes me hopeful that we get to hear some in the KH3 score.
“Regardless of warnings
The future doesn’t scare me at all”
I needed to hear this
Your not alone :)

Best part
I always have to go back and watch this video. Such a beautiful song. Here in 2024. ❤
23-11-2024 ( still watching :) )
Before my fiance was taken from my by a drunk driver we planed on this being our song at our wedding. Now every time I hear it I think of her and always cry thinking of what should have been. My heart is always with her and I know she is still with me in my heart.
😔😔😔 I'm sooo sorry man...
I'm sorry for your loss
@JK_Jirachi don't let it be darker, I cry everytime but I also smile. I got to share a song and part of my life with a beautiful woman and we danced and smiled so even in my tears this song is a blessing on my life.
Wow.... Im sorry
That has honestly got to be one of the saddest things I’ve ever heard, this song already makes me tear up every time I hear it and now I’m crying a little. So sorry to hear that man, my heart breaks for you.
How did her accent just disappear like that?😱
I'm absolutely amazed! I love her songs so much!
Utada was born and raised in New YorkxD She can speak English & Japanese. She even released 2 English Albums in the U.S:)
+Cold : Singing in English is just a matter of making sounds. Have a listen to Celine Dion's first album. She couldn't speak English.
***** the state or nyc?
+sonicx assasin Yeah she was born in the state NY and was raised in NYC too:)
Is there like a major lag, because the sound doesn't match with her lips? 🤔
The first time I watched this video was when I was like 13 or 14, and now I'm 24. The song has not become less magical throughout these years...
All of the Kingdom Hearts themes hold such passion and emotion in them. Brings the whole series together when the music is incorporated into the Franchise big time :) ! Couldn't agree with you more :)!
Mili Latū This vid is only 2 years old
+Silverknight 105 lol
Silverknight 105 I didn't mean this exact video, but just the video of Utada live-recording Simple And Clean. Don't try to sound smart.
Dude It's the exact same for me. Same age when I saw it first, and I keep coming back because this version is awesome.
She is really good at singing without an accent. That's awesome.
She was born in New York. Haha
She can actually speak fluent English and Japanese. Her Japanese accent here is thick so that her Japanese fanbase can understand her more better instead of switching between accents.
She is japanese-American born in New York; japanese decent that's why she can speak English fluently. 😊
***** I think he meant that when Utada sings in Japanese, for example, there is no hint of her American accent, be it anything that would affect the way she speaks or sings fluent Japanese. Ditto in English.
Ok all I said was she sings good but of course some people have to randomly come in and talk about accent xD
This song reminds me of my childhood like crazy, amazing tune
So much… miss it so much 😢
Perlo 'search' is very good too ..give it a listen.
I always thought that it was a native english speaking person behind the chorus, it feels nice to get a surprise like this once in a while.
Actually she's from New York, she is a native English speaker
Her parents are japanese and i know she released her first songs in japan.
i can sing in Japanese fluently but I have no idea what I'm saying so is that cheating I dunno
+Cory8120 That's not singing in Japanese fluently if you don't understand what you're saying.
Literally my favorite song ever

You're so right. This song is amazingly difficult to sing lol
God I remember this video from like 7 years ago, and it just disappeared, thank god someone reuploaded it!

Felix Iris hi
Felix Iris hi
Yeah I was pretty devastated too when they took it down
utada hikaru is so amazingly talented. this is breathtaking.
Miss you bro, you left this old bastard who keep studdering and gets laughed at.
Interesting fact. in japan utada is more famous than madonna
+Jake Gibbs I'm not surprised. I am ignorant of Madonna's popularity in Japan, but nonetheless I find it unsurprising.
um, who's Madonna?
+Jake Gibbs awesome!
Obviously How's that interesting ? In a country where then 0,4% are foreigners and of those 0,4% 0,3% of them are Chinese who'd care about Madonna ? and even more understand what she's singing about ?

it was used in kingdom hearts but different melody...
I mean most anime openings are also singles first then they use them on the shows. Japan just loves to do that.
It was used for the game but the English version of the song had completely different lyrics compared to the original song's.
Most Op's are wingles *written* for the shows though.

All these years later and this song still hits different, thank you Utada you will always be the Queen of Kingdom Hearts. x
If she’s the queen, then what position does Yoko hold?
i can't stand it how somebody can have such a beautiful voice?! i want to cry....
I wonder how it feels to be part of one of the games that changed the world of games forever.

OMG! 16 years later, this song is still one of the best song I have ever listened to. I guess it HAS to be really THAT good after all!!

Zaiho Same,I’m an Indonesian-born here in the states here in Oklahoma and I’d occasionally listen in on my parents’ conversations and adapting to it.
Still amazing she can switch between them pretty easily
Well she does have a bit of an accent while speaking Japanese but it goes away while she sings.
Please, for the love of God bring Hikki back for KH3.
Shng275 if they don't many people will be very pissed
joshua gorski well the problem is, why they take simple and clean and sanctuary so often and don't take a new one or asking her to make a new one ?
Because the others probably don't fit with the meaning of the game or she don't want to.

Lisa Sch I love this song (few weeks later ) I'M SICK AND TIRED OF THIS SONG I PLAY IT TOO MUCH !!!!!
slasher9001 ikr you know how long me and my bro been waiting for this game
she has such an amazing voice. hands down one of my favorite all time singers!
I'm back here again. I don't think this song will ever leave my life
Hope you live a long one. Longer than mine.
im back here for this comments
and for a moment.. it was like joy was a tangible thing.. like you could touch it. how beautiful this world can be.
In the 1990s, the heyday of Japanese music, she accomplished immortality at the age of 15 with album sales of 8 million, which later became a Japanese record. And now, at 40 years of age, she continues to be active at the forefront of the music industry. From Some Japanese.
I got chills omg
Same
+Nienne the Archer same !
Every single time
Same. I started crying. This song is way too beautiful.
Same!!
This is why Hikki is my no.1 favorite singer ❤
she grew up in NY. I can’t believe her Japanese, it’s so perfect.
When I replay this song over and over again, I See Sora Falling... Again... And Again... And Again... *OH, And Again*

Game came out a while ago but still gets my this gets me in the feels every time
lol it gets you in the feels because it was a while ago. that's called nostalgia.
...Yeah...I know....
9 years later and I still love this version of Simple and Clean
Wow, fantastic!! I love how [slightly] nervous/energetic/happy she is in the beginning
Im an emotional wreck. I had so many emotions at once listening to this that I just kept crying. Ive heard this song all my life, but never live. Now I can put a name to a face. Fantastic job. Its beyond beautiful
The accent switch is incredibly impressive.
この歌い始め。加工されてない声だと思えない。
切ないんじゃなくて満足させてくれるから何回も聞きたくなる。
Just wow.
She has the best voice I’ve ever heard sing this song. Wow can’t believe it was her first live
Wow this is amazing-this makes it sound like a sad folk song. Her timbre is so intriguing in this raw, unprocessed vocal-I'm used to a little pitch correction on the higher parts, but the fragility and emotion is so pure here. I love her.
She was only 20 years old.
What!!!
Key word "WAS"
She give us power in every KH opening
Wow
Holy shit!
I've been listening to this song quite often for the past 15 years and it's great every single time.
I honestly prefer this version of Simple and Clean to the Studio Version. There is such a raw emotion that I hear in her voice in this version and that's one of my favorite things about certain singers. Hikki is so vulnerable in this song and in this video in specific. She's putting all of her self in this video.
Also brings me to tears whenever I hear this song. So many childhood memories flow back when I hear this song
this is the best version of Simple and Clean. tops.
Facts i wish this version was in hq on spotify so I wouldn't have to come here to watch it
Little did she know she'd make a song that would be encapsulation of 100 years of Disney
😮Why? Disney is dead now with workism😅
Wow. No wonder Disney hired her. She sounds best live and unplugged.
Disney didn't make the game. Squaresoft did.
+mgsgamer They wouldn't do so without Disney approval.

you can keep reaching, it's cute but obvious you know nothing about how games are developed when using licenses.

It's amazing how much passion she puts on her songs, it inspires people to become someone amazing.
I'll never be able to listen to this without crying. So beautiful.
Utada: sings simple and clean
Me: sheds a tear while eating my star fruit
I saw her long time ago. I still love her voice and fan of her music. Her passion and love for performing is awesome
I can’t believe I cried watching this, but man hearing this live wow
Thus a song transcended cultures that we possibly would have never gotten without kingdom hearts.
Such a sweet voice
Forever will be one of my top 3 favorite songs.
I can't believe this is the only version of this song I can find live
she has a beautiful voice one of the best in my opinion
Watching this kinda made my eyes well up...i've always loved the song and seeing her doing it live with so much passion. Memories of such a beautiful game all came rushing back. Back when you saw the trailers on T.V and hearing this song for KH1. People don't appreciate enough how much this game has influenced similar generes.
This is a masterpiece..
Imo best song ever made.
yep!
One of the most talented singers of our generation. Without a doubt
When THAT smash direct ended I came directly here. Thank you Sakurai. Thank you Nomura.
This song might be the most beautiful song I've ever heard in my life.
I used to listen to this on repeat. ❤ Such a good song.
I just came back 10 years in time with this version. Thank you so much for making my night so much better.
One of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. I need to learn this song on guitar so I can play for my loved one..
I've been searching for it forever. Thanks for sharing!
Bart McAllister must download this one before its gone again .. lol
I love how she quickly transitions accents the moment she says, "Simple and Clean".
I can't believe time went by so fast and I still love this song so much .. it always gets me .. I love Utada Hikaru 😇
I bought an album back in 2005 of hers. This is the first time seeing this. This was amazing. Voice of an angel.
Instant classic in the heart of many gamers. Over a decade old and hearing this song still raises so many memories and a strong sense of nostalgia. This series and the artists and composers and designers etc. Will live on throughout the years to come. Let the hype for the third installment begin.

Beautiful voice
Dude, based on the way she was speaking before she started singing, I would have had _zero_ idea that she spoke fluent English and was from New York. I have been to Japan, and she acts _super_ Japanese in this. It's quite remarkable.
It's also my first time realizing what the lyrics of this song were about. It makes me sad now.
i tell you right now if i ever find me a girl that can sing this song this beautifully and with this much emotion im putting a ring on it
This voice brings back so many memories, also her voice is phenomenal and flawless, love her.
I honestly teared up and felt that lump in my throat. this song and the games of kingdom hearts holds a place in my heart like no other
Not sure why this was on my suggestions but I remember playing Kingdom hearts on Playstation 2 when I was a little whipper snapper and this song was the theme. She has the voice of an angel.
When I was younger " 6-7 years old I would cry every time I heard this song bc my older brother loved to play kingdom hearts and he loved this song
Pretty sure this is what angels sound like. Her voice is so good. Its crazy
This is the best version
it is...I always come back to this version over the years.
i miss this songs.thanks for reuploading it again.its very lovable when im listening to this music.ill always cry when ill hear some of utada songs.keep up the good work utada.ill always support you in your songs.HIKKI FOREVER.
That was beautiful, it's really impressive that she switched accents just like that. It's not easy to master singing in two different languages
Really, thanks to KH . I'm so glad knowing this song since i was a kid, what a blessing
Just as amazing live. She’s phenomenal 😍
I wasn’t even born during the time when kingdom hearts was popular, yet why does this fill a hole in my heart?
This song is the embodiment of the whole KH series. And goddamn I love it so much.
Pure talent. Absolutely pure talent.
Side note, this sounds really good with some geetar thrown in. Makes me hopeful that we get to hear some in the KH3 score.
